Morderstwo w środku zimy

Rate this book

Born in Chobham, by an airfield, and raised in Winchester on the banks of the River Itchen, Fleur Hitchcock grew up as the youngest child of three. When she was eight, she wrote a story about an alien and a jelly. It was called THE ALIEN AND THE JELLY and filled four exercise books. She grew up a little, went away to school near Farnham, studied English in Wales, and, for the next twenty years, sold Applied Art in the city of Bath. When her younger child was seven, she embarked on the Writing for Young People MA at Bath Spa and graduated with a distinction. Now living outside Bath, between parenting and writing, Fleur Hitchcock works with her husband (a toy maker), looks after other people's gardens and grows vegetables.

Wowza! This is the 1st of my Fleur Hitchcock books I’ve read, & I. Am. Impressed. I read this in almost 1 sitting. Sitting on the top deck of a bus days before Christmas, Maya sees a couple arguing violently in the middle of a crowded Regent Street. They see her watching, she looks away, and the woman disappears. Maya goes to the police, who shrug and send her away. Then a body turns up... Now convinced she is a vital witness to a crime, the police send Maya into hiding in rural Wales. She resolves to get to the bottom of the mystery. Then the snow comes and no one can get out. But what if someone can still get in? I stayed on the edge of my seat. The danger & the suspense in this were next level-right from the very the start. Then you have that snowed in/trapped vibe that amps up that danger & suspense so much. So atmospheric as well, of course with it being Christmastime & all the snow. Christmas is at the end of the story, so mainly just a winter vibe. Then where our MC Maya goes to stay is so great in this old house, the horses, dogs, sheep, etc…her amazing aunt & grumpy cousin. So good. There's unexpected friendships, danger, suspense, family, murder, & even the cutest most heroic horse who has my heart. This gripped me, & I stayed engrossed. Highly recommend. BEAUTIFUL cover by Robert Ball too.💜

Loved the Wintry vibe in this book (I mean very obvious from the cover and the title).

Quite fast paced, kept me on the edge all the time as I was guessing and re-guessing again the twists. It also has, in my opinion, a very strong female lead character. Loved her with every single cell of my body! I was anxious and so happy for her!

Also huge plus for all the animals included in the story, but this is completely personal.

Maya goes into hiding at her aunt's farm in Wales after witnessing a man threaten a woman with a gun in London. The plot is very far-fetched, even for a childrens book as the 'gang' seeking her seem to be able to tap phones, commandeer all purpose vehicles during a severe snow storm and generally run rings round the police force. The book started off as a good story with some interesting characters but didn't hold my interest as it just became more unbelievable.

A fast-paced exciting adventure with a strong female lead. Murder in Midwinter is a great crime novel in which the plot is smart enough to keep the reader guessing all the way through. Although, as an adult reader, I had some ideas I was pleasantly surprised as I wrong and that there were enough twists and tense moments to keep me gripped until the end.
Written in first person, the anxiety and fear that Maya feels comes through well and since we're in her head throughout, the idea of what might be happening beyond her makes for an exciting read. I found that I wanted to know more about Maya's family as well as other characters who are revealed later in the book.
Murder in Midwinter would be an excellent class read for UKS2 in my opinion with short chapters, believable characters and an engaging and clever plot which readers will thoroughly enjoy unraveling throughout.

Kind of felt like a modern Famous Five or Nancy Drew, but more gunshots and less mystery solving. The plot is fast paced and interesting, and you really do wonder why the baddies are after Maya. The mystery is nicely solved in the end, but not before some excitement and bravery on the children's behalf.

I loved the family theme; the sisters are more like best friends. I loved the black hair with the skunk stripe being the identifiable feature; something I hadn't seen before. At first I was prepared to hate Ollie, but even his annoying character grew on me. All the animals are, of course, great.

A fun read for children, but there are mentions of gun battles and a few people get shot (not dead though, although there is murder early on in the story) Such a pretty cover too! Four stars!

Quick mystery - girl on a bus sees a man with a gun in the city, her family becomes a target and the police move her out to the safe country side to live with her aunt and annoying cousin. I liked the country, snowy life and the hiding and fleeing, I did wonder the whole way through why on earth and how she would have been so easily tracked down by the perpetrators. Pretty good for year 5/6, this is along the lines of Famous Five or Nancy Drew and solving mysteries but without the teamwork, she’s a bit of a sole worker because until well over halfway her cousin is a waste of space.

Being a murder mystery fan, I very much enjoyed this book. Despite being for children, it kept me on the edge of my seat and needing to read to the end. Great twists in the story and the author expertly created tension and suspense.

Skusiły mnie klimatyczne okładki i całkiem ciekawe opisy.

Wywróciłam mocno oczami bo naprawdę no?

Maya and her sister Zahra have an unusual white streak in their dark hair. It makes her memorable. When she's on the bus going home, Maya sees two people in the street arguing. Everyone around them is moving but these two are stopped. She gets out her phone and takes a series of photos.

At home, the shop is in pre-Christmas rush. Maya is a bit spooked and shows her Grandad the pictures. She rings the police to report what she saw. The twins are annoying. Her mum is dealing with customers. Zahra tries to calm her down. What are they going to wear to the end-of-year school party?

The next day they see a body being pulled out from the river. The same red-coloured hair as the man she'd seen arguing with the woman, the day before. She calls the police again. They come to talk to her. She explains what happened but the phone card is missing. She can't show them the photos.

Scared and worried she tells them that they saw her. Her distinctive hair and clothing make her frightened. Especially when Zahra is kidnapped from the school. Now the police find her sister and take the situation seriously. Maya is being sent to her cousins in Wales.

Surely, in the middle of Wales, a muddy farm and outbuildings, she'll be safe? When further reports come that the Villians have been seen in a nearby town, Maya worries more. She hates the cold and her cousin Ollie is being rude and snide until someone comes into the house. He shows her a place to hide. They are left alone when things get worse.

Will they find out why the red-haired man and the strange woman want to get to her? What are they after? Will Maya survive riding a horse that bites her?

This is a well-written crime thriller for young adults.

This is a very good book to read if you are into mysteries!
When Maya was on her way back to home from school, she saw a beautiful shop and she just clicked some random pictures( to send them to her sister, Zahra) but she had no idea that what trouble it will bring.......
She by-mistakenly clicks a picture of a couple....a man and a woman and they both are arguing but the man is holding a gun. The window of her bus was blurry so she had to turn on the torch of her mobile , it looks like that the couple wants to kill each other but when they notice the glash coming from her mobile , it looks like the couple wants to kill her too...
In my opinion , I loved the opening scene of this book , I was so gripped from start to finish. But from some part the book got messed up! It got confusing but then slowly- things got back to notmal .There were a ton of twists and turns in the ending- which I liked so much!😇💖
I still have so many questions in my mind! They ending was kinda loose.
But I still liked it , if your will start reading it once , you will not be able to put it down😇
Go for it!💝

Ksiazka miała niesamowicie ciepła i przyjemna atmosferę.

Literatura dziecięca, a styl pisania niekiedy trochę infantylny.

A superb thriller, aimed at younger readers, but I was gripped. Schoolgirl Maya witnesses something and for her own safety is sent to stay with relatives on a remote farm. Her hideout is soon discovered and a cat-and-mouse situation develops. Wonderfully tense, this suspenseful tale kept me hooked until the end. Marvellous!

I found this book very easy to read and probably could have challenged myself more. I got through it fairly quick and found I could easily read big sections at a time. It was a very interesting plot and I loved watching the characters relationships change and evolve throughout the story. My only complaint would be that I found it hard to follow the plot towards the end when they started to introduce all these characters. I found it confusing to know who had the stolen painting and what the issue was. However, I would recommend to young readers looking for a book full of excitement and mystery!

I'm this weird kind of Scorpio both intrigued and terrified when it comes to crime, darkness, thrillers and mysteries. I always have this longing to read those stories and then I always risk not being able to sleep for about a week because said book scared the crap out of me. Reading middle grade or YA thrillers and mysteries is therefore the only working solution. I can satiate the urge for darkness and I still manage to sleep at night.

What I love about this middle grade mystery thriller is that Hitchcock does a great job setting the atmosphere and creating tension. Even though the book only gets truly spectacular towards the end, we feel the fear of the heroine throughout the entire story. Mostly because Hitchcock constantly has our heroine being very aware of her surroundings. Creaking floorboards, cars passing by, hearing voices, feeling eyes staring at her.

I also really enjoyed the plot of this mystery. I had an inkling where the story was going at some point, but I liked how all the pieces of the puzzle clicked in the end. I do think that some adults in this story did some really stupid things, but I understand that adults simply have to be stupid for kids to end up in severe danger. And the kids in this story truly do end up in some severe danger and they are confronted with some really scary stuff.

If I'd been a little kid who sees pictures or even entire movies while reading I might have been traumatized after reading this book. And in that way it's not like this book isn't exciting or scary. I do think that the characters in this book need to see a therapist after everything they've been through. I can't imagine they'll ever feel safe again. Therefore, if your kid craves something scary and exciting: this is an amazing book to gift them.

I enjoyed the pacing and excitement of Murder in Midwinter. The story kicks of right from the beginning and that Maya’s thrill-ride never lets up until the conclusion. It is written as a page-turner and I was reluctant to put the book down. (I could have very easily read it in one sitting if over commitments had permitted this.)

Maya also makes a good main character is also good, she’s intelligent and determined. I liked how I got to know her whole family in this book and how Fleur Hitchcock let relationships develop over the course of the story – because families are complicated.
