Yoko Tsuno gets pulled into an adventure when she sees a time machine appear next to an old temple in Borneo. The adventure spans across a distant future, World War II, and the present day. By present day, I mean 1981, which is when this comic was originally published. In addition to time travel, this adventure includes super weapons and cosmic horror. I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns in the story.

Leloup is in great shape and gives us a gripping Yoko Tsuno story. It features some of the signature themes in the series: "interesting" family relationships, powerful (and dangerous) inventions, a captivating intrigue spanning across several generations -- all told in an elegantly-illustrated, fast-paced narration.

Beschleunigte Teilchen
Urlaub ist was gefährliches. Immer wieder beginnen Abenteuercomics derart, dass der Protagonist sich gerade dem dolce vita hingibt, um sich vom Stress der vorangegangenen Eskapaden zu erholen, nur um sich dann am Holiday Resort in Borneo beim Elefantenreiten direkt ins nächste haarsträubende Erlebnis hineintreiben zu lassen...
Wir sind ja schon Weltraumreisen und andere diverse technische Spielereien von Yoko Tsuno und ihren außerirdischen Freunden gewohnt, und daher überrascht die "Zeitspirale" nur wenig. Dazu kommt eine etwas anders verpackte "Godzilla"-Variation, ein Kataklysmus-Szenario und eine alte Familiengeschichte - na, zumindest wird es der japanischen Elektronikerin nicht langweilig.
So sehr ich Leloups Gerät- und Landschaften mag, so nervt er mich mit seinen Personen. Alle Männer sehen gleich aus, alle alten Männer sehen aus wie junge Männer, denen man einen Bart angeklebt hat, alle Frauen sehen gleich aus, und das Mädchen aus dem 39. Jahrhundert könnte genausogut eine Vineanerin sein, bis auf die Hautfarbe. Und von der Figur her scheint es in Leloups Universum nur perfekte BMI-21-Typen zu geben, bis auf die Frauen, die immer extrem mädchenhaft sind.
Eine Frage, die sich bei Zeitreisegeschichten immer stellt, und die nie zufriedenstellend geklärt werden kann, ist die "Terminator"-Frage - ist eine Idee, die irgendwann in der Zukunft zur Auslöschung der Menschheit führt, dadurch einfach zu beseitigen, indem man den speziellen Wissenschaftler, der sie hatte, auf irgendeine Weise davon abbringt? Persönlich halte ich Ideen und Entdeckungen für nicht an eine Person gebunden; wenn nicht Oppenheimer die Bombe gebaut hätte, hätte es ein anderer gemacht, und in der Zeit zurückzureisen, um Oppenheimer "zu überzeugen", es sein zu lassen, hätte nicht viel gebracht. Ich glaube, das "Genie"-Konzept wird diesbezüglich überschätzt.
Bei diesem Band gibt es ein paar Schlüsselstellen, die in unauffälligen Textblasen versteckt sind und die man leicht überliest - was dazu führt, dass man den Rest des Comics nicht mehr versteht. Also aufgepasst!

Voilà un tome bien meilleur que le dernier. J’ai bien aimé cette histoire de voyage dans le temps, qui se passe sur Terre, ça change un peu. C’est chouette de découvrir de nouveaux personnages également.

On the better side of 3 1/2 stars.
Holds up surprisingly well for something written almost 30 years ago. Of course, my knowledge of quantum physics is crap, so I can't say one way or another whether or not the science behind the story is any good. Of course if it was convincing-sounding to me, no ten year old is going to be able to tell the difference. Am I saying I know more about physics than a ten year old? Yes, but barely. So Cinebook is re-releasing a lot of older foreign (mostly French I think) comics for the US market. It's a little risky considering titles like this that are really ancient, but I suppose that if kids still like reading the old Hardy Boys books, something like this certainly fits that category and should hold up as well.
The most impressive part is the integrity of the time travel events. It's really easy when your'e telling a time travel story to get your detials all mixed up and to screw up your continuity, but Leloup does a good job, even to the point of not sending Monya back to her time because they've created a new spiral and the world Monya knew no longer existed. Not bad for a kids' comic.

Jeune, mon intérêt pour Yoko Tsuno tenait à deux choses
D’abord, le fait que le lead soit tenu par une jeune femme à la fois intelligente et courageuse (sérieux, à part Natacha, à l’époque...) -et non-blanche, la monochromie d’une grosse partie de la littérature jeunesse me saoulait déjà à l’époque, même si c’était de manière plus diffuse et sans vraiment arriver à mettre de mots dessus.
Enfin, la présence d’une machine à remonter le temps, coeur coeur coeur. Forcément, s’agissant du premier album avec Monya, j’aime déjà beaucoup plus que les albums précédents. Et puis le cadre, Bornéo et Sulawesi, pendant la 2GM et « de nos jours » (enfin, de nos jours d’il y a 30 ans ^^), est très bien rendu par Roger Leloup.
Bref, j’ai adoré relire l’album dans le cadre des lectures du soir avec Mademoiselle :)

Yoko Tsuno, a tough young adventurer, takes her elephant for a walk and rescues a girl from the future. She's here to stop a scientific discovery that will one day destroy the planet's surface, and Yoko joins her mission. Very good. Wish my kids had more of these for me to read!

I wish Cinebook would simply publish the tomes in their correct order. This is actually nine adventures beyond what it purports. It shows a distrust in the very work that they champion to be able to captivate as they were introduced. Mixed with the obvious £greed£ for further sales of course.
This is a time travel treatment that only tip->toes, instead of tramples, since there is only one two-way trip that doesn't tamper too much in temporal continuum. Aside from the girl getting there, that is.
And how about that girl who, almost impossibly, out-cutes Yoko on the cover! I like the color Wolfo chose for her as the shade people would be in the far->distant future because it makes sense and looks wonderful with those almond eyes (which would certainly be a recessive gene by then) that I love so.
Why don't I EVER hear the term "almond eyes"? Not once. I've only garnered from my reading and don't know why ->others<- don't have the sense to yield it instead of "slanted". It does away with any connotations and I even think it sexy.

Sarjakuvaharrastajana olen iloinen jokaisesta ilmestyvästä käännösalbumista. Kaikki kunnia siis uudelle BD-sarjalle, mutta olisihan tuolla maailmalla kai muutakin tarjottavaa kuin 1950-luvulta peräisin oleva Heiska ja Heta tai tämä alun perin 1980-luvulla ilmestynyt Yoko Tsuno -seikkailu "Ajan pyörre" (Story House Egmont, 2021).
Sarjakuvaan pätevät ihan samat sanat kuin kaikkiin muihinkin Yoko Tsunoihin, eli piirrosjälki on hienoa ja erityisesti teknisiä vempaimia on kiva katsella, mutta itse juoni aikamatkusteluineen jättää runsaasti toivomisen varaa.
Vika saattaa toki olla minussakin, mutta en ole lukenut elämässäni yhtään oikeasti hyvää Yoko Tsunoa.

Met 'De tijdspiraal' doen tijdreizen hun intrede in de wereld van Yoko Tsuno. Ze krijgt bezoek van een meisje uit de toekomst die naar het verleden is gekomen om een ramp te vermijden. Dit gegeven maakt 'De Tijdspiraal' een voorloper van films als 'The Terminator' (1984) en 'Twelve Monkeys' (1995). Leloup behandelt het tijdreizen geloofwaardig, al is zijn beschrijving van de apocalyps dat nauwelijks. Yoko zelf reist mee terug in de tijd, waar het verhaal steeds absurder wordt, en eigenlijk too much - Leloup haalt er veel te veel bij. De hoofdrol voor de Japanse bezetters van Indonesië maakt het verhaal extra ongemakkelijk - we hebben het hier toch over de nazis van het Oosten, maar van hun onderdrukking zien we feitelijk niets, die veegt Leloup gemakshalve onder het tapijt.

Ich erinnere mich, dass ich die Zeitreisebände als Kind immer sehr mochte und so bin ich froh, dass der dritte Sammelband endlich Monya und die Zeitmaschie enthält.
"Die Zeitspirale" war zwar - wie meist - etwas konstruiert, aber es hat trotzdem einfach Spaß gemacht, den Comic zu lesen.
Interessant und etwas zu weit hergeholt finde ich einfach immer, dass sämtliche Verwandte von Yoko irgendwelche Schlüsselpositionen besetzen (sowohl in der Vergangenheit als auch in der Gegenwart), aber gut, das ist nun mal eine Comicreihe und kein Fantasyepos.
Besonders gefallen hat mir, dass Monya tatsächlich ein bisschen teenagerhaft gewirkt hat, früher habe ich sie auch immer als Erwachsene "gelesen".

Great as usual. This time we visit Indonesia, where Yoko has an uncle with a plantation.
Apart from the time travel story, Yoko meets a Cthulhu-ish creature. Unusually for this series, even though they suspect the creature is intelligent, there is no real effort made to communicate with it. Yoko et al. treat it in an adversarial manner throughout.
My problem with this story though, is the resolution.

Hienoa, että välistä jätettyjä Yoko Tsunoja suomennetaan. Vähemmän hienoa on se, että tälle ei ole annettu mitään järjestysnumeroa, eli meillä on nyt numeroitu sarja, jossa numerot ei vastaa aina alkuperäisiä, yksi Non Stop-sarjassa julkaistu numeroimaton plus uuden BD-nimikkeen alla lisää numeroimattomia, mitkä ovat kuitenkin oikeasti osa numeroitua sarjaa. Argh.
Anywayyy, kiva vihdoin lukea miten Yoko tapasi Monyan ja miten aikakone tuli kuviohin. Muutenkin oikein toimiva seikkailu, ei ole montaa rinnakkaista juonta, vaan keskitytään yhteen tarinaan. Yokon perhekin kytkeytyy juttuun. Vauhdikasta menoa, kuten yleensäkin.

This one’s somewhat better than the last, mainly as it mixes Yoko’s family history and a Second World War mystery to a tale of time travel and an unexplained alien presence. Once again the story is ambitious, if struggling to make sense of time travel paradoxes, and the graphics are nicely detailed. However, the characters themselves remain somewhat stilted despite a number of action scenes.

Hienosti kuvitettu ja huomaa, että tekijä on ollut piirtämässä Tinttejä. Aikamatkustus teemana hieman tökkii, mutta toteutus ok. BD-sarja tuo nimenä ikävästi mieleen BoD-omakustanteet.

Kauniita, niin kauniita kuvia ja tarkkoja ja toiminnaltaan pohdittuja teknisiä härpäkkeitä sekä hölmöhkö juoni. Eli ihan normi Yoko Tsuno. Viihdytystä.

Ici, nous plongeons à nouveau en plein dans la science-fiction avec pour thème: le voyage dans le temps et les extra-terrestres.
Lors d'un séjour "vacancier" chez son cousin à Bornéo, Yoko fait la connaissance d'une étrange adolescente "Monya". [Cette dernière deviendra un personnage récurrent dans les histoires à venir].
Je n'ai pas envie de m'étaler sur l'histoire :)
Cependant grâce à un coup de fil émouvant entre Yoko et sa maman, nous découvrons comment cette dernière a décidé de baptiser sa fille Yoko. Il est évident qu'elle est et restera sa poupée préférée.

Du voyage dans le temps! Je pense que les aventures avec Monya étaient mes préférées à cause de ça. Le monstre extra-terrestre est un peu ridicule, mais le téléphone final entre Yoko et sa maman est vraiment touchant ♥ Et y'a un moment avec Vic!
