No sabía que estos libros de cultura pop y filosofía existieran, pero por lo visto ya hay 78. Me he estrenado con este de Futurama, serie de la que soy fan incondicional, y la experiencia me ha encantado.
Realmente el libro no habla tanto de filósofos y tratados clásicos (lo hace solo ocasionalmente) sino que más bien nos quiere hacer reflexionar, en general, sobre aspectos relacionados con la existencia, la ética, Dios, el tiempo, la muerte… y para ello toma como punto de partida escenas muy concretas de Futurama.
No es un ensayo escrito por una sola persona, sino que cada capítulo está firmado por autores diferentes. Esto hace que los temas que trata el libro estén un poco dispersos, sin un orden concreto, e incluso a veces se repitan. Me hubiera gustado ver bloques temáticos un poco más definidos, pero esta es la única pega que le pondría.
Al que le imponga la palabra filosofía del título le diría que no es un libro denso ni difícil, sino todo lo contrario. Si eres fan de la serie y de vez en cuando te gusta hacerte preguntas existenciales te resultará muy entretenido.

Definitely an interesting read. I'm not really into philosophy, but I'll read anything that revolves around Futurama (AKA one of my favourite tv-shows ever). I did like some of the articles better than others. I found "Sexlexia and Other Sexy Learning Disabilities" by Jerry Piven and "On Becoming Your Own Grandfather" by Dan Burkett to be especially thought-provoking and appropriately crude (true Futurama-style). One of my favourite parts in this book is the poem in "We're Gathered to Remember" by Courtland Lewis, written as an ode to the remembrance of Futurama:
Good news everyone, we're now at the end;
Go forth, Drink Slurm, and hang with your friends.
Let no headache with pictures or slug in your head;
No alien, mutant, or toad make you dread.
In thousands of years, no matter how far;
We shall meet again, with our heads all in jars.
Whenever you're down, and life gives you sass,
Futurama's the cure, "Bite My Shiny, Metal, Ass!!!"

Futurama pone encima de la mesa tramas muy divertidas, complejas y rápidas. Este libro se para a pensar un poco y te aporta mucho entendimiento y ganas de saber más. Como es un compendio de artículos breves sobre diferentes temáticas se hace muy ameno y si hay temas que no te interesan especialmente (como en mi caso pudiera ser la ética y los robots) se pasan súper rápido. Aparte de que son divulgativos y se explican muy bien.
Mi parte favorita ha sido la antepenúltima ("buenas noticias, toca hablar del tiempo") donde a través de diferentes autores hablan de las paradojas temporales (he entendido porqué Fry sí que puede ser su propio abuelo!) o las distintas teorías sobre el origen del universo que aparecen en la serie. Enfin, muy interesante.

Not a bad book to introduce people to philosophy. The various contributors bring different philosophical conundrums to the table using different Futurama episodes to illustrate different points. Nothing mind blowing here for someone who's studied or read any philosophy but still enjoyable if you're a fan if the show and would like a different perspective on it.

I'm a huge fan of Futurama, so I loved every minute reading this book. I had several favorite moments but chapter 21 "Fry, Windmills Don't Work That Way!!" was the best. This chapter explored Fry's character as similar to the character of Don Quixote in their ability to blur the lines of reality and fantasy. I cried at the end of reading this chapter. Yeah, I just admitted to that.

Okay introduction to various philosophical ideas and concepts; Chapters are somewhat hit-or-miss in terms of how interesting they are; Authors tend to rely on the same episodes; Too bad it's not "official" as pictures would be such a great fit

An interesting and engaging introduction into some basic philosophical concepts. It might be a good book to get young people interested in philosophy.

Futurama and Philosophy is the 78th entry into the “…and Philosophy” series. It started many years ago with “Seinfeld in Philosophy” and has ballooned from there covering a wide range of topics from Baseball, Jeopardy, Lady Gaga, to Futurama, Batman, Marvel Movies / Marvel Universe, to Curb Your Enthusiasm and much much more.
I do enjoy the series for what it is. Each book is a collection of essays looking at their particular topic (in this case Futurama) through the lens of philosophy. The articles are hit or miss, just as the writers themselves are. But overall its pretty entertaining / interesting stuff.

As I said about this type of book – the essays can be hit or miss. Luckily this edition is more hit than miss. They do a good job of doing a deep dive into the characters, some of the settings and the make up of the Futurama universe, as well as things like robot ethics, freedom, “sexlexia”, and much more.
The Zapp Brannigan “sexlexia” article while being somewhat interesting discussing the inadequacies of each of the characters when it comes to sex, doesn’t really offer a whole lot of philosophical insight. And this kind of brings to light how these “… and Philosophy” books kind of work. They tend to either be more heavily bent on discussing the particular matter (in this case Futurama) and typically attempting to be humorous, or they come across too heavily focused on the philosophy and lose sight of the source material to a degree. I feel like its an unfortunate ‘nature of the beast’ as far as these collections go. As much as I love philosophy and love Futurama or Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm or whatever the particular book is about, its too hard to truly weave source material with philosophy and keep it engaging for both crowds.

Non sono un' amante della filosofia, ma l' ho studiata per anni e devo dire che questo libro è davvero ben fatto!
Il parallelismo tra Futurama e alcune delle teorie di filosofi importanti è davvero ben strutturato.
Non Viene svolta un' analisi solo dei personaggi ma anche di alcune teorie importanti come l'esistenza di Dio (o di un Robot-Dio), la sessualità, l' emarginazione, il senso della vita ...
Super interessante, lo consiglio!

Really good book on philosophy which uses the tales of Futurama as a useful reference point. Most of the essays are very good, some could do with a little better explanation, but all in all, it was a good experience. A great book for any Futurama fan looking to get a deeper inside into the themes of the programme.

The book is divided into 23 chapters that analyze concrete parts and episodes of the series and connect it with philosophical concepts and questions. It was an interesting read given that I love the show and I knew what they were talking about. Concepts discussed go from racial and sexual discrimination, multiverses, time travel, religion and some more. Entertaining!

Es un compendio interesante que trata de explicar algunas teorías y corrientes filosóficas.
En ocasiones es pesado y se queda "poco entendible" la explicación, dependiendo mucho de la persona que haga ese texto.
Para un buen fan de Futurama, es genial porque te hace recordar la serie y querer volver a verla

Una verdadera obra maestra que te lleva a los confines intelectuales del ser humano en todos los episodios de la serie. El revisionado de Futurama mientras dura la lectura, es un plus para entenderlo a otro nivel.

Me ha encantado. Analiza prácticamente todos los temas desde el punto de vista filosófico: adicciones, sexualidad, autoestima, creencias religiosas, racismo y homofobia, veganismo... Y todo de manera amena, sin perder el rigor.

Quizás lo peor que se pueda decir de este divertido libro es que hay momentos donde se repiten ciertos temas y no hay un guión excesivamente claro, pero si eres fan de Futurama y sabes algo de filosofía (no vale como manual filosófico), vas a sentirte entretenido en tu lectura de sobra.

El llibre té gràcia i alguns capítols són interessants, però altres tenen un nivell baix i, a més, la traducció és molt millorable, entorpint la lectura de forma sistemàtica. Tot i així paga la pena llegir-lo si et cau a les mans.

Si un buen libro de filosofía te hace pensar, este lo cumple (además es divertido). No sé como serán los demás, pero este me ha dado ganas de leerme la colección completa de esta serie Popular Culture and Philosophy, que ya pasó los 130 números.
De los textos que más me motivaron a reflexionar están por ejemplo "Futurama y la economía de la basura": uno descubre, no sin cierto terror, que finalmente todo se convertirá en basura en algún momento. También "Sexlexia y otras dificultades sexis del aprendizaje" me hizo notar que no había leído con tanta atención la Fundamentación de la metafísica de las costumbres de Kant, en la que este sostiene que, desde su teoría, masturbarse es más inmoral que el suicidio. Y otras referidas a la autonomía y a la identidad, como que es lo que caracteriza a Bender o cuando Fry se contagió de parásitos, en resumen, un clásico de la ontología como es la paradoja de Proteo y la idea, aunque parezca obvio, de que hay algo más importante que nuestro aspecto exterior para definir lo que somos. Y, con la excusa del capítulo en que Fry va a una manicomio de robots, ese excelente artículo que diferencia la verdad objetiva y la subjetiva y muestra que en realidad ambas son importantes.
Como curiosidad, uno de los autores, Jason Buchanan, según dice en sus créditos, actualmente es profesor en la Universidad de San Ignacio de Loyola en Lima, Perú.

A sincere and warmhearted homage to one of the greatest (animated) TV-shows ever produced. As expected from a collaborative effort, the chapters are a bit irregular, sometimes overly redundant and even a tad too simplistic, though others do undertake more serious discussions on political and philosophical issues.
One has to be a massive fan of the series to be able to fully appreciate the constant (and very appropriate) references to a wide array of scenes and episodes.
All in all, the book serves to remind us (even the biggest of fans) of the depth of a TV show which we may have sometimes taken for granted, or even normalized, while providing us with interesting subjects to think about on the way.

Another one of those philosophy/collections of essays I read about science fiction series I am a fan of. Not as memorable as others in the genre I've read but there were interesting essays in this one.
