Everybody Lies had the potential of being a great thriller, but for me it was more of a soap opera. Everyone had drama going on in their lives, and I feel we were too caught up in the drama to focus on the mystery side of the story.
In some ways, I fear this is one of the cases where I wasn’t the right reader for the book. I wanted a thriller, not the drama of all the characters. Some people enjoy masses of drama, but I just wanted to see the mystery come together. There were some interesting elements in how that aspect played out, but it was not enough to win me over.
Add in the fact that the constant tense changing got on my nerves, and this one wasn’t all I had hoped it would be.
i hated pepper! loudly accusing that man of being gay with his wife in hand and catching her mother in the act without politely leaving out? She is weird, nosey and a pest and i was ready for this book to be over. Reading about her aggressively meddling in other folks business was uncomfortable. The plot was also drawn out, it took the whole book to figure out what happened and it didn’t give me the ‘wow-moment’ I was hoping for after finally getting to the end. I love Hardin’s work, have read every book and was never this disappointed, especially because ‘Secrets of the South’ was bomb! I will definitely continue to read more from this author, but not at all because of this book...
A whodunit that sometimes bordered on soap opera, lol. I wrote a really in depth review but it was lost and I don't really remember it all.
***spoilers*** sorta I thought the thing with Bill was overkill but in the end I could see that it was necessary for the tie around and reveal.
So one sister's ex man was less scandalous than the other? It's interesting how she could draw a line with one but not the other. I just don't know why she couldn't start fresh. It's not a good look.
It's true ole girl got what she deserved but Pep didn't seem to have any remorse that 4 young children were made orphans. The father being a man she claimed to love. I know it was a little blurb at the end that probably d I didn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things but it made me feel a bit different about her.
I am interested in knowing the story of the demise of Nora. I wonder what were the circumstances that would make he BF wanna take her out. Maybe that could become another book.
******
All in all, I found it to be an enjoyable read. I was surprised by most of the plot twists. I can usually figure them out pretty early on and I didn't see a lot of them coming. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Featuring: Party, Sisters, Investigation, Messy Drama, Sex - Detailed, Profanity, Bad Vibes, Violence
Rating as a movie: R for adult language and content
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
My thoughts: 📱2:59:52 Ch 5. - This is busy with reveals but lacks foundation.
These 3 stars are generous. This story was meh. There wasn't a solid foundation to build this story on. Then several of the things that hindered the investigation were just stupidity and procrastination on the sister's part. Why are you giving your sister's electronics to her SO if they had separate residents? If you know someone is lying why are you waiting to confront them? Why would the police think this was an accident? That investigation was so thin it was air. Then her radar was terrible, people would give you pause and she'd keep talking. SMH. Also, not enough men to go around, I don't like super messy. The reveals and reasons belong in a cozy mystery they were so lame. This was my first urban thriller, unless Brandon Massey does that too. I consider returning it at first but I finished it because I was told it was good and I don't like the author losing money. It was poorly written in my opinion, so I was shocked to discover the author offers ghostwriting services on her site. The narration was the other issue, there were a few times the narrator used the wrong voice during a conversation and confused me for a second on who was talking.
Recommend to others: Maybe. I wasn't a fan but I think this would be 5 stars for many who love Urban Fiction and are looking for domestic suspense.
B.M Hardin you have done it again. This book was very good. Pepper was adamant about finding out the truth, and she didn’t stop until she got it. I never would’ve guessed the answer. Everyone was suspicious with the lies and secrets.
Why? You may ask. Because she always throws a monkey wrench into the storyline and it’s so subtle that I never see it coming. She knows how to keep a story fresh and exciting. Being an author is definatly her calling.
This book was good from the beginning to the end. The story kept me guessing, with so many lies being told in one circle. The twist and turns had me on the edge of my seat. I definitely didn’t predict the way things ended. Great book!
I liked the author's writing style, but i wasnt a fan of the story. It was too much going on... When its like that, I cant really connect with the characters.
So many lies & secrets. This book had me guessing from person to the next. And did not think the killer was her. Wowww!! This was a great and my nd boggling read. Loved it
You never what know what secrets a person is hiding
I have read plenty of books by this author but this one here was really playing with my mind. The suspense will keep you wondering and make you not want to put the book down until you finish it. Soooo many times I wanted to skip to the end just so I could see who did it. One thing I can say is everybody was keeping some type of secret that would make them lie to keep it hidden. The most shocking part is when you find out who did it. I can guarantee that you won't see that coming. Get yourself a glass of wine or a nice drink because you will need it and read Everybody Lies.
I purchased the ebook at the full price of $6.99 (CAD). Now, I don’t mind spending for a well-written book. And I’ll even ignore grammar mistakes and editing/formatting.... to a certain extent. I’m not picky, really. But I am when it starts ruining my enjoyment of the book. The minute I opened the Ebook, I realized it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. The formatting and editing is practically nonexistent. With those two taken care of, I would’ve raised my rating to a 3, maybe a 3.5. But that, coupled with more drama than I’ve ever seen and a plot that didn’t really make sense, left a very poor reading experience. Based on the blurb, I expected a thriller. It wasn’t... There were so many side plots with so many characters that are “friends” but somehow are more backstabbing to each other than their enemies... Maybe it’s a case of “it’s me, not the book”, but I’m definitely not in the majority with this.
I absolutely LOVED the way the story weaves together. I was honestly invested in it all (though, by the abortion, i felt a bit overloaded and by the divorce, I was giving my best "really?" meme face. But what really made me like ok, that's enough was the crowbar scene w the dress. It was as messy and confusing as Why Did I Get Married when Janet got the stripper...like for why?).
This isnt your average whodunit book and it had me trying to figure it out at every turn.
Pros: - In 👏🏾 cred 👏🏾 ible 👏🏾 opening
- Awesome use of metaphors; definitely painted a great picture without being too descriptive
- Some funny lines! Ex: "...was so bald-headed you could roll her hair with rice."
- Like some of the other reviews said, it takes a minute for the ball to really get rolling, but I kinda liked trying to figure who lied about what.
Cons: - a couple of spacing or punctuation errors, but nothing that was too annoying
- Pepper became much too engrossed in everything that she became overly nosey yet no one told her about herself?
- The "no, but I lied" (and all variations of it) got really old really fast. It just seemed repetitive to read.
- Saying "reached me"...idk where that derives from and I'm sure it's a legit phrase, but it was making me angry bc it wasnt proper grammar.
- Why too many unnecessary plot twists that didnt actually move the story...the baby in Miami had me literally go like 😒. The twists were cool before but at this point, it's like ok, alright...we get it...🙄
- The confession was a bit...unrealistic and anticlimactic, but I did like that it happened by that person
- The ending...really dude? 😒🙄
All in all, I liked it but the ending was rushed and the last part was plain dumb.
I'm never disappointed when I choose one of the many books by this Author. Her writing speaks for itself. The way she pens a story and keep you on the edge of your seat is incredible. Her talent is very unique and unmatched. When tragedy struck within this family and close friends. Everybody started to look guilty. Lie after lie was being told. Olivia had many of secrets that her family was in the dark about but a few closed friends and her fiancee knew the real her. Pepper was shocked and in disbelief after witnessing what happened to her sister and confused as well finding out thing's she had no clue about. She refuse to let it go knowing deep inside. Somebody saw and knew something. While searching for the truth. Pepper realized that their circle of friends as well as her sister Honey was looking more and more like suspicious. There was more that meets the eye. Everybody had secrets. It's amazing how one person past, one phone call, mistaking identity, a derange person. Can change the dynamics of your whole life.
Once again author BM Hardin does not disappoint me by writing a excellent storyline full of plot twists and turns. I love a book that has drama, romance, mystery and suspense as a storyline. My attention was held from the beginning until the end of the book. I was trying to figure out which character was the one who could have committed the crime and each time I thought I knew then someone else would be suspect. At one time I started thinking that one of the main characters Pepper had did it. Also there is a lesson to take away from the story is that it does not pay to lie because eventually your lies will catch up with you and the truth will be revealed. I highly recommend this book to read and also the author’s other books. Cassandra H.
BM Hardin has done it yet again... If you have ever read one of her books, then you already know she is going to have you think something is going one way and in the end she goes all the way to the left..lol This book hooked you from the very first chapter and kept you guessing until the very last word. I literally thought I knew who the killer was, yet, each chapter produced another scenario along with more lies!!! If you are looking for a great suspense, look no further.. I promise you will not be disappointed. All I can say is buckle up and enjoy the ride!!!!
BM does it again with another amazing book that will have your attention from beginning to end. Very well written, great storyline and character development. So many lies, secrets, twists and turns, you won't be able to keep the list of culprits straight. Just when you think you have it all figured out, once again your left scratching your head wondering who could it be. I loved Pepper's determination to seek justice for her sister Olivia she refused to give up until she had all the answers but that ending reveal definitely had me shocked. Overall great book, and I highly recommend reading.
This book was so good! I couldn’t believe how many secrets friends were keeping from each other. I swear to n everything Greg was going to be the killer. Then I thought way Crystal was and then Honey. This book had me all over the world place with my theories but what I wasn’t expecting was for it to be Rodney’s wife. I’m glad Honey was able to get to a good place. Brain was a great guy I could tell but was just caught up in mess. Mama Grace smh she lived for everyone and then when she begin to live for her it was snatched away. I’m happy Pepper was able to get her answers however, I don’t agree with her aborting mission. This book was 5* good!
I don't know. I have no idea if I liked this book or not😭 it definitely was interesting and kept the drama flowing. Pepper irked my nerves through the whole book. I hate the way it ended. Pepper is TRIFLING af! But thats just my personal opinion of how things turned out. This is the first book I read by this author and I just don't know how I feel. At times if felt like they was just throwing in random drama for shock factor. I may have to read another to see if I like this author. Right now I just know I need a drink.😭 This book stressed me out and i dont like investing my time in a book to find out the killer is somebody webdidnt know about until the last 10 pages!😒
Woooow!! This was an awesome read!!!! From beginning to end the suspense was a dang gone headache!!! I wanted to know just like Pepper who killed her sister Olivia, had a headache with all the lies everyone was telling I couldn't trust NO ONE!!! It's like I was a detective put all the pieces together and get to dang near the end and find out it's someone I didn't meet in the story at all!! @#$&@ I can keep going on and on but I'm not.... This is a must read B. M. Hardin Yessssss 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read! It was perfectly executed and flowed well. I could not put it down. I thought I knew who the killer was and then I even thought that perhaps Olivia faked her death! I was all over the place and completely wrong 😂. Pepper was a true ride or die; she was determined and never let go of her gut feeling that Olivia’s death was an accident. Everyone had secrets and their lies. It was not hard to keep up with the characters and the different twists. Definitely would recommend this book to anyone.
Wow!!!! Everything expected and more. BM Hardin... Chile this was Ahhhhhmazing. So...like Pepper... I was thinking all sorts of things. I sideeyed ALL the characters. I mean every last one. I swear for the longest I thought it was Crystal. Then as Pepper continued her journey to find the killer, I thought it was Kelli,Deb,Greg and the list goes on and on. Never in a million years did I ever see that coming. The actual killer surprised the heck out of me. BM Hardin you have out done yourself
This story had all kinds of twist & turns. That Ms Hardin had to be crazy at one point in time or something. She is just that good. I normally can figure clues out but I couldn’t this time. Now that pepper was persistent. I still don’t agree with her being with Greg In the end. I just couldn’t be with my sister man regardless of how much love there was between us. Once my sister was with him, Whether she was alive or dead I just couldn’t do it. To each it’s own though. Good book
I devoured this book. Every little moment I could steal away, I was completely captivated by this book and these characters!!! BM Hardin is a master storyteller and suspense weaver!!! I enjoyed every moment of suspicion, every moment of doubt, every lie, and every inevitable truth!!! I can’t wait to read what Hardin gives her fans next!!! I am definitely one of them!!!
I recommend this book for fans of her last book, Secrets of the South, or fans of Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn!!!
Everybody does lie at sometime or another. Loved this story, the turns and twists kept the mystery going waiting for the next lie to be told. But Pepper was not going to rest until the truth was told . Excellent!
Done, 5 stars
Everyone has their own secrets. Sometime they should remain secrets and maybe not . This family of long time sisters / family lived each other so much and so long they didn't think no one had secrets until tragedy hit. But love conquers all.
Almost instantly this book pulls you in and does not let go! So many twists and turns that if you didn’t keep up, you would get lost easily. The title of the book was fitting because EVERYBODY, except maybe Mama Grace, lied through their teeth!
The building of suspense is what kept me reading, even those days I could only spare 10-15 minutes for reading. The ending felt rushed and anticlimactic, but it was a complete ending nonetheless. I wasn’t left wondering what happened with who.
I think this is the first book I’ve read by BM Hardin, but I know it won’t be the last!
I originally thought at the beginning, that everybody killed Olivia because of Pepper😒... come too find out that it wasn't true🤣 but i didn't expect it too be Rodney wife..however i did put it together that Bill was Rodney's dad... why did she abort Greg baby😣 but i was happy for them to experience what they should've been experiencing since they've first met.. B.M. you are the bomb lady!!!! We need more!
No surprise here... this book is as captivating, riveting, jaw-dropping and suspenseful as anything you would expect from Ms Hardin. Honestly, I don't know how she continually and successfully conceives these tales. Everybody is a suspect in this book and needless to say, it ain't who you think. I couldn't swipe fast enough to get to the end and now I'm sorry I read it so fast. Great work, and the cover was on point. A must read!
Of course Author B.M. Hardin wroter another thriller that had me guessing "who done it"all the way until the end. Not to give anything away, but I guessed wrong themajority of the book. The more lies and revelations Pepper uncovered while investigating her sister's death, the more twists the author threw in. This suspense story did exactly what it was supposed to do, keep you guessing till the very end! Loved it and definitely recommend reading it!
