El Club de los Gourmets nos adentra en el perverso universo de la búsqueda del placer. Sus integrantes, cinco sibaritas guiados por el conde G., emprenden un viaje sensual a través de insospechados manjares de alta cocina, encarnación de lo sublime y de lo trágico.

About the author

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki (谷崎 潤一郎) was a Japanese author, and one of the major writers of modern Japanese literature, perhaps the most popular Japanese novelist after Natsume Sōseki.

Some of his works present a rather shocking world of sexuality and destructive erotic obsessions; others, less sensational, subtly portray the dynamics of family life in the context of the rapid changes in 20th-century Japanese society.

Frequently his stories are narrated in the context of a search for cultural identity in which constructions of "the West" and "Japanese tradition" are juxtaposed. The results are complex, ironic, demure, and provocative.

Como gran aficionada a la gastronomía (no solo me gusta comer y probar distintos tipos de comida o recetas sino también me apasiona cocinar, lo considero un arte) este libro me llamó la atención por su título. Después de ver varias reseñas positivas y teniendo tan pendiente a este autor japonés me animé a probar suerte con esta obra de 1919 editada por Gallo Ediciones.

«El club de los gourmets» nos cuenta la historia de cinco hombres amantes de la alta gastronomía, ilustres sibaritas que se reúnen para degustar platos y recorrer restaurantes. Pronto empiezan a aburrirse, comienza la imperiosa necesidad de querer más: mejorar la experiencia y probar cosas diferentes. Esto lleva un día a el conde G., atraído por los exquisitos aromas que desprende, a un lugar donde se ofrece una experiencia única a sus comensales.

Tanizaki brinda una historia corta extremadamente visual que sorprende por su reflexión basada en encontrar el límite entre el placer y la obsesión: si esta es saciable o termina volviéndose incontrolable cuando cada vez cuesta más disfrutar de ella, buscas algo diferente y superior para satisfacerte volviéndose una necesidad.

Es un misterio todo lo que pueden llegar a contener los platos de los que se hablan en el libro, pero pasas de tener un hambre atroz al leer las descripciones (mejor dejar la lectura para cuando estés saciada de comida) a sentir asco absoluto. La narración juega a que agucemos los sentidos para sentir las texturas, los olores y las sensaciones descritas, una maravilla sensorial vaya.

En conclusión, tras esta primera toma de contacto con el autor me quedo con un buen sabor de boca (lo siento, lo tenía que decir) y solo puedo recomendar este corto pero especialmente original relato. Una historia singular, que sorprende por lo ácida y divertida que es y que sin duda en la época debió de sorprender y herir sensibilidades.

The Children: Weird. Delicate sadistic aristocratic boy invents weird games for older boys. There's a scene where one boy starts nibbling at the others. A sister gets involved in other games. There's a horrible scene with mochi and snot. Gag.

The Secret: Jaded man gets new kicks dressing as a woman.

The Two Acolytes: Living in a mountain monastery, they've never seen a woman and are kind of interested.

The Gourmet Club: Jaded men have an eating club. They're after new tastes and experiences. Could 'pig foetus in a milky soup' be the answer to their prayers? Or how about bird shit? Gag.

Mr Bluemound: Film director has a very sexy film star wife. Then he meets a freakazoid...

Manganese Dioxide Dreams: Ever wanted to know what Junichiro Tanizaki's excrement reminds him of?

My hero on page 187:
"she went to Tokyo and bravely entered the Music Hall, where she saw 'There Are Seven Keys to Love,' which included in its credits such names as Togo Seiji, Muramatsu Shofu, and Mishima Yukio. When she came back she said that it may be called a strip show, but there was nothing so improper about it, the dancers were adorable, the audience included a number of women,"

No sé que me esperaba cuando cogí este libro de la biblioteca, pero desde luego no era esto. Y me encanta.

Cuando leo a Tanizaki me gusta no saber nada de la obra a la que me voy a enfrentar, porque nunca sabes por dónde te va a salir. ¿Un delicado ensayo sobre la importancia de las tinieblas y dejar que el tiempo deje huella? ¿Una obra turbia a rabiar? ¿Un relato divertido y que roza lo absurdo? ¿Una historia que nos traslada al Japón de siglos atrás?

‘El club de los gourmets’ en sus 70 paginillas nos presenta a un grupo de hombres, liderados por el conde G, que se reúnen cada noche para disfrutar del placer de comer. Pero claro… como ocurre con cualquier cosa que cause deleite, nos acostumbramos rápido a lo bueno y… el cuerpo nos exige más y mejor. Más y mejor. Y ya tu te las apañes para conseguirlo o sino… frustración, desengaño, malestar… ¡Oh, vaya! Esto casi suena a obsesión y a adicción. ¿Habrá un doble mensaje en este relato?

La búsqueda de lo sublime lleva al conde G a explorar nuevas vías. Es genial ver cómo este club de sibaritas parece no encontrar la cima, siempre exigiendo más… lo que hará al lector tener el estómago encogido al final solo de pensar por donde van los tiros. La conclusión es, por cierto, bastante apoteósica, donde el autor juega y nunca mejor dicho, a dejarte la miel en los labios.

Hay escenas de una sensorialidad brutal, no sabría decir si me daban más hambre o asco, así os lo digo. ¿Cómo es posible? ¡Tienes que leerlo!

Un relato genial, con un toque maligno, donde sientes al autor divertirse. Si nunca has leído a Tanizaki, puedes perfectamente empezar por aquí, aunque como he comentado al principio, su producción es de lo más variopinta. Además, es un autor con gran influencia de occidente en su estilo, por lo que es muy fácil de leer.

A pesar de su sencillez, me hizo reflexionar bastante… cuándo la pasión se convierte en obsesión, ¿no se acaba el disfrute? (básicamente… aplicable a cualquier aspecto de nuestra vida).

Esta edición ilustrada por Yoko Najima de Gallo Nero es absolutamente genial. ¡Solo puedo recomendarla!

Divertida, ácida, crítica... Me gustaría haber visto la reacción de los lectores de la época cuando se publicó esta obra. Imagináis un club de varios japoneses ilustres, pero no hablan de literatura y filosofía, sino que comen. El protagonista, el Conde G, es un obsesionado por la comida (la buena) y esto le lleva a descubrir lugares y gente de lo más extravagante. La edición de Gallo Nero, además, es una delicia.

The Gourmet Club by Junichiro Tanizaki, translated from the Japanese by Paul McCarthy and Anthony H Chambers.
A wild macabre ride of a book. You do not enter with any expectations. You only leave with ridicule and a crazy look in your eyes. Tanizaki is a mad genius especially for writing this piece in such an era in Japan. Almost felt like I was reading pulp fiction or watching a tastefully made Tarantino movie.
The story is a crockpot of imagination bordering on the gruesome and dark followed by mysticism.
In the first story - The Children- kids try to invent games to play but end up bullying each other. at points, it's almost treading on the dark webs of sado-masochism.
Second, is the Secret- a maze of thoughts and undiscovered beauty, joy of playing mind games. It packs so much content..
The description of these stories without giving spoilers is hard.
The Two Acolytes- A story of faith and hope distracted by worldly desires of lust and greed. All these stories have an otherworldly element embedded.. An easter egg..
Next- the title story being the Gourmet Club- A Gastronomical club falling prey to mundane and redundant flavors. Only before discovering a palace of food. A utopia for the connoisseurs
a craft guarded by secret and exclusivity .. the methods of cooking will change flavor forever.. All six senses will now taste food..
Next is Mr.Bluemond- Tanizaki digs deep and takes you to the basest of human emotions.. the worst of them and then makes you feel the full force of it.. there's no turning back now..
Skin-deep love or the love for the soul , you ask?
I have never read anything like this..
Finally, the last story being Manganese Oxide dreams- is left to the readers interpretations combining themes of floating feces and a murder story

Lo he leído en catalán. En una edición maravillosa de la editorial El cercle de Viena y la traducción me ha resultado maravillosa.
La pluma de este escritor no deja nunca de sorprenderme, esta historia es curiosísima, toda una experiencia gastronómica.

Un club de sibaritas japonés, se reúne periódicamente para degustar las exquisiteces de la gastronomía local y mundial. A pesar de haber probado toda clase de exquisiteces, acaban aburriéndose de la comida convencional. Buscando nuevas experiencias, uno de sus miembros, acaba en una casa en donde lo paranormal y la realidad se configuran...

Un relato de comida sensual. He salido con mucha hambre.

Es fácil de leer, se lee muy rápido y el final está bien. Si buscáis una lectura diferente, es vuestro libro.

Un grupo de amigos bien posicionados de Tokyo se suele reunir para compartir experiencias gastronómicas. El problema se produce cuando ya no consiguen que ningún plato, ningún sabor, les satisfaga. A partir de este momento, por una curiosa casualidad esta situación cambiará llegando a experimentar más allá de lo que se podían imaginar.

Sin duda y como esperaba, no será mi última lectura de Tanizaki (recomiendo también enormemente El elogio de la sombra) fácil lectura e historia que, aunque corta, es adictiva.

El llibre està escrit de meravella. És un lluïment de l'autor, no perquè sigui encantador, ni frenètic, ni poètic, ni per la trama, que és incisiva i provocadora (però fluixeta), sinó per l'exercici tècnic que suposa narrar i descriure amb tanta precisió en un llibre on tot són sensacions i experiències (no sempre visuals) dels sentits.
Els que alguna vegada ho heu provat, sabeu com de difícil és tractar en literatura els sabors i les olors.
El punt de partida és interessant, però no el llibre no acaba de portar-me enlloc. Això sí: necessito llegir més de Tanizaki. El seu domini descriptiu és insultant.

271114: i read somewhere that the reputation of japanese authors are usually made through their short stories- for me this is definitely the case for tanizaki. the novels read have a queasy effect, given the central character is usually a masochistic, frustratingly childish, obsessed man. this is easier to take in small doses. this is consistent throughout his career, demonstrated also in the weird stories here. my favorite, 'the two acolytes', is also here the least typical, most philosophical, most moving, most simple...

Passion and obsession. When one ends, the other begins. One needs to tread very carefully when decided to walk on this road.

Manganese peroxide.... Hillarious. I think he wrote the whole story just to be able to write the word "manganese peroxide". Just like when I was fascinated with the phrase "attoiumani", I tried to stick it to every conversation.

I have to agree with John Updike. The stories made me hold my breath throughout, and the ending didn't let me fully exhale still.

Tanizaki Junichiro is my favorite modern Japanese writer. Although I have learned to plow through his often difficult (but very beautiful) Japanese, new translations are always a feast. And of the large number of short stories he wrote, mainly in the Taisho period, only the tip of the iceberg has been revealed in English. So, this was a very welcome book, and the translations by Anthony Chambers and Paul McCarthy, two Tanizaki specialists, are very fine.

Why then am I not completely satisfied? Just out of greed (like the insatiable members of the Gourmet Club), because there are so many other interesting morsels out there which were not included, and which I would like to see in English...

Here is an overview of the six stories included, mixed with my wishes for more translations:

1. The Children***** ("Shonen", written in 1911). A very strong story. Three mischievous friends play sadomasochistic games in a mysterious Western-style mansion. It is the girl who dominates and "enslaves" the two boys, her brother and his friend. This story won Tanizaki critical recognition from Mori Ogai and others.

2. The Secret***** ("Himitsu", 1911). The best story in this anthology. The world-weary, hedonistic narrator, who lives a secluded life in the annex to a temple in an old part of Tokyo, experiments with cross-dressing. Guess what happens when in that state he meets the woman who used to be his mistress, and she leads him, blindfolded, to her house?

In the years from 1910 to 1915, when Tanizaki also wrote his canonical "Tattoo" (1910), which has been translated by Howard Hibbett in Seven Japanese Tales, Tanizaki made a flying start as a new writer. In my insatiable greed I am also waiting for translations of such stories as:
- "Devil" (Akuma). The story which earned Tanizaki the sobriquet "Akumashugi" or "Diabolist." A young man, captivated by a certain lady, steals her handkerchief to savor its odor. She has a bad cold and the handkerchief is dirty, but even so the young man "licks it like a dog." Not very appetizing, but this is an important story in the Tanizaki canon.
- "The Whirlwind" (Hyofu). A young artist is exhausted after a bout of debauchery with a Yoshiwara geisha and decides to travel to Northern Japan to recuperate. But the call of the blood remains strong... This story was banned by the censor and the issue of the magazine Mita Bungaku in which it had appeared was taken out of circulation by the authorities.
- "The Kylin." Confucius visits the State of Wei, where Duke Ling has been enslaved by his beautiful consort Nanzi, a typical Tanizaki-type cruel woman, who even threatens Confucius' state of mind. As the philosopher leaves Wei in defeat, he declares: "I have never yet met a man who loved virtue as much as he loved sex" (an authentic quote from the Master!).
- "The Jester" (Hokan). About a traditional Jester (hokan), who has to play the fool in order to be laughed at by people, his rich patron, and the geisha he is secretly in love with.
- "A Golden Death" (Konjiki no shi). Although Tanizaki himself considered this longer story a failure, it is interesting for two reasons: it foreshadows Edogawa Ranpo's Strange Tale of Panorama Island - in other words, Ranpo got his inspiration partly from Tanizaki - , and it was appreciated by Mishima Yukio for the reason that Tanizaki's protagonist aimed at a "unity of life and art" that would end in his "golden death" in a paradise he creates for himself - an idea close to Mishima's own philosophy (and death).
- "The Tumor with a Human Face" (Jinmenso). Features a haunted film that drives the viewers mad, like the videotape in The Ring. I just now discovered this has been translated by Thomas LaMarre in Shadows on the Screen: Tanizaki Junʼichirō on Cinema and "Oriental" Aesthetics, an interesting study about Tanizaki and cinema.

We continue with the contens of The Gourmet Club:
3. The Two Acolytes**** ("Futari no chigo", 1918). Set in medieval Kyoto, this is the story of two young monks who follow different paths: one leaves the sacred mountain for a life devoted to earthly passion while the other remains faithful to his vows.

4. The Gourmet Club**** ("Bishoku Kurabu", 1919). About a group of fat men whose quest for new flavors leads them in ever weirder directions. In the end we see them (blindfolded) nibbling on the seductive hands that proffer them the exotic foods.

Other great stories from this period (1916-1920) are:
-"Fumiko's Feet" (Fumiko no ashi, 1919). An old man, infatuated with the beautiful feet of his young mistress, asks a painter to paint her portrait in such a way that her feet are displayed to advantage. When the old man lies dying, he obtains bliss by having Fumiko's foot press against his forehead. Foreshadows Tanizaki's Diary of a Mad Old Man.
- "On the Road" (Tojo, 1920). The story of an almost perfect crime. A man's wife dies of apparently natural causes, but a suspicious detective succeeds in tracing step by step how the man plotted to get rid of his wife so that he could marry a more attractive woman.

Happily, other interesting stories from these years have already been translated:
- "Devils in Daylight", translated by Keith Vincent in Devils in Daylight, about a writer and his friend who stake out a secret location where through peepholes in the knotted wood they become voyeurs at the scene of a shocking crime... or so it seems.
- "The Little Kingdom", translated by Paul McCarthy in A Cat, a Man, and Two Women. A seemingly quiet new student has an appetite for power politics and discipline, and in the end realizes authoritarian control over his fellow students and even the adults. A chilling story that foreshadows Lord of the Flies.

We continue with the contens of The Gourmet Club:
5. Mr Bluemound*** ("Aozuka-shi no hanashi", 1926). A degenerate admirer is obsessed with the correlation between an actress and her image on celluloid. In the early 1920s Tanizaki wrote several film scenarios.

6. Manganese Dioxide Dreams*** ("Kasankamangansui no yume", 1955). A story with autobiographical elements, a bit like Tanizaki's The Maids. The narrator's activities - eating in famous Chinese and Japanese restaurants in Tokyo, watching the film "Diabolique" with Simone Signoret, dabbling in Chinese history - mingle in a feverish dream only to end in his toilet bowl.

Other great stories from this period (1921 and after - from the Showa period on, Tanizaki almost stopped writing short stories, but concentrated in longer work) are:
- "Aguri" and "The Thief", translated by Howard Hibbett in Seven Japanese Tales. The first story concerns a vampirish young mistress who is a precursor of Naomi;
- The Strange Case of Tomoda and Matsunaga, translated by Paul McCarthy in Red Roofs and Other Stories. A farcical story in which Tanizaki creates a man who (like The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) alternates between his thin, quiet and retreating Japanese personality (Matsunaga) and his robust Western and cosmopolitan self (Tomoda), who gregariously travels the world under various aliases. Also "Red Roofs," in the same volume, again about a Naomi-type femme fatale.
- "Professor Rado," translated by Paul McCarthy in A Cat, a Man, and Two Women. A reporter attempts to penetrate the life of a secretive professor.

The writing of this review has somewhat satisfied my appetite, for I notice that the later period (second half of Taisho) has been reasobaly well served. It is mostly the early Taisho period in which many delicious dishes are still waiting for translators... (And as everything is rather scattered, it would be great to have Tanizaki's "collected short stories" in a few nicely bound volumes, but that is probably an impossible wish.)

Una pequeña historia sobre la adicción (aquí en forma de comida) y la terrible sensación de ansiedad cuando sólo buscas algo que renueve y mejore todo lo que ya se ha probado, cuando todo pasa a ser circunstancial y la adicción gobierna todas las decisiones de la vida.

Recomendable para cualquier adicto en potencia (cualquiera de nosotros)

No suelo tener ediciones ilustradas, y las pocas que hay en mi biblioteca corresponden a alguna obra predilecta. Me falta costumbre, por tanto, de leer algo de primeras con material gráfico de apoyo; tal ha sido el caso con este cuento de Tanizaki, cuyas elegantes ilustraciones —salidas de la mano de Yoko Nakajima— me han ayudado a sumergirme en la historia y han mejorado la experiencia de lectura de este, por lo demás, relato bastante normalito. Si bien es cierto que el planteamiento inicial engancha y resulta prometedor, apenas llega a desarrollarse, dejándolo a uno con la miel en los labios por lo que pudo haber sido. No he encontrado en las escasas setenta y pico páginas nada digno de mención, ni tan siquiera la prolija descripción de algún plato, siendo lo mejor (con mucho) las imágenes que acompañan al texto. Sociedades secretas, depravación, búsqueda del placer a toda costa... temas muy potentes para explotar pero sobre los que se pasa de puntillas. Una lástima.

Lectura para degustar (nunca mejor dicho) en 45 minutos. Cuenta la historia de un grupo de hombres japoneses obsesionados con la comida y los placeres epicúreos que les proporciona el paladar. Un día uno de ellos descubre un lugar en Tokio de lo que parece ser "auténtica y real" comida china y se obsesiona con los alimentos y la presentación de los platos. Hay momentos en los que no sabes si estás leyendo exageraciones o si el autor se habrá basado en el comportamiento verídico de algún conocido. Con una cultura como la japonesa, no me sorprendería tanto que se diesen cosas así en los sótanos de algunas de las mejores casas de la ciudad. Lo mejor, las ilustraciones que acompañan al libro, lo peor, algunos episodios son francamente desagradables por lo gráfico de su narración. No apto para estómagos delicados.

Deep-Fried Woman, Korean Style

Dreams of pig fetuses, swallow’s nests, jade orchids, braised lips, bamboo shoots, bok choi, butterfly broth, phlegm, what not, children engaging in sadomasochism, monastic crossdresser, manganese dioxide—things get pretty shitty when taken to the extreme, quite literally.

A very proto-Lynchian dive into the depths of desire, except Tanizaki’s ero-guro-nansensu takes a more casual approach to the dark fantasies. Indulgence is merely a hedonistic endeavour under the guise of secrecy. When the veil is torn, no pleasure remains. The reader is returned back to normalcy. The prose is undoubtedly beautiful and freely associating (part of me regrets not being able to read this in Japanese, which, as Ezra Pound rightly points out, is truly a poetic-logographic language).

Essentially a collection of short stories spanning Tanizaki’s writing career. Tanizaki had a Buddhist influence on his childhood (religious symbolism is present throughout the collection), only for it to be eclipsed later on by his choice in opting for sensory pleasures rather than leading an ascetic life. But the reverence remains, as is paid homage to in The Two Acolytes.

This is my first review, and quite an unfortunate one.
Trigger warning for anyone who's picking this up.

But the devil, it seems, is as powerful as God, for when any of the sensual pleasures are taken to their furthest point, there is a danger of losing oneself entirely in them.

Este relato bien podría haber estado incluido en Eroguro. Horror y erotismo en la cultura popular japonesa, aunque en mi humilde opinión no llega a la maravillosa asquerosidad de "El caso criminal de los baños Yanagi", del mismo autor, y que sí aparece en dicho libro (que recomiendo, por cierto). Eso sí, Tanizaki sigue siendo un artista en esto de transmitir mediante la palabra escrita sensaciones, gustos y olores. Algunos comentan que es un relato desagradable, algo con lo que no coincido. Si le pongo solo tres estrellas es porque tiene elementos digamos que oníricos de los que no soy muy fan en general, es decir, no es que no me gusten en esta obra, es que no me gustan en general en la literatura. En cualquier caso, recomiendo este libro a cualquier persona que sienta cierto interés en el lado un poquito más oscuro de este autor.

La sinopsis es interesante aunque tenía mis dudas al respecto de la longitud del libro porque estaba acostumbrada a las historias en las qué hay un desarrollo más amplio de ese tipo de clubes. Sin embargo no necesito más, la historia es sencilla y más bien la riqueza de este libro reside en las descripciones sensoriales que utiliza Tanizaki para su historia porque no sólo es hábil para describir, sino que le da margen al lector de construir sus propias interpretaciones de los sabores de cada platillo.

Es una lectura cortita e incluye ilustraciones, por lo que se lee de una sentada. A mí se me pasó volando.

No os quiero decir gran cosa del libro para no desvelaros mucho y que podáis sorprenderos, pero os dejo algunas impresiones:

- Es una historia muy visual.
- Experimenta con los límites de la obsesión y el aburrimiento.
- Puede empezar abriéndote el apetito y acabar dándote asquete.
- Te deja con algunas preguntas al final, pero creo que forma parte de la magia de la historia.
- Puede que acabes diciendo en voz alta: “¿Qué?”.

¡Ha sido una experiencia divertida en conjunto!

El text que podeu llegir en la segona fotografia podria repetir-lo en Jordi Cruz a MasterChef i ningú es sorprendria.
Ara, que la novel·la a la qual pertany hagi estat escrita el 1919, sí que resulta una sorpresa d'actual que és.
Una història que explora amb subtilesa els límits de les sensacions i el plaer que comporta.
Com sempre, Tanizaki, brillant. I un plaer llegir-lo en català traduït per l'Albert Nolla.

I have said it before. Tanizaki is one of my favourites. This book should be kinda disgusting, and yet it only made me feel hungry and craving for more pages. Amazing.

Ya lo he dicho antes. Tanizaki es uno de mis favoritos. Este libro debería ser horrible y asqueroso y aún así, me dio mucha hambre y me dejó con ganas de más páginas. Increíble.
