My rating 3.7

The book "UNDEAD" by D.M. Wolfenden has a simple and good story that will keep you reading until the end. This vampire story is a little different than what I've read so far and it's a solid piece. Through the story, love flows in a completely different direction because of the misperceptions of reality. The main character in the story Doyle Cerberus is a vampire who does not know what love means and by accident, he meets Lana Whitlock and she becomes obsessed with her. He starts chasing Lana and soon discovers that she is in love with her girlfriend Francine. Doyle, in her blindness, does not realize that Lana is not the woman he should fall in love with, but love is blind and in the end, everything that goes wrong and has a bitter price. In the end, love can be as cruel as this story because often you can't have everything you want, especially if you choose the wrong path to find love. If you want to relax with a love story about vampires then this is the book for you.

While vampire novels with blood and gore etc. are not a genre I care for, I do have to say that Undead is well-written. The characters are full, fleshed out, and three dimensional. Lana’s pain and desire for revenge are palpable; her character is one that readers will feel sympathy for, and Doyle, while flawed, has redeeming qualities that make him a character that readers will find themselves caring about. Both Lana and Doyle are characters that readers will be able to connect to, and their story is one that will draw readers in. Lana’s story starts in the present day, and Doyle’s started fifty years prior.

I did have a bit of a hang-up on Doyle’s name. It was hard for me to picture the name being connected to a young (looking) handsome vampire. In my opinion, it seemed not as much like an attractive vampire’s name, and more like the name of an old, and not very nice man with a golf shirt that doesn’t match his plaid pants belted around his chest who says things like “Get off my lawn, you whippersnappers,” whilst shaking his cane at children who are doing nothing more than walking along the sidewalk in front of his house. That is just my opinion, of course, and other readers will likely not have the same issues with the name that I did.

Adult readers who enjoy vampire stories with homosexual relationships, violence, blood, and gore will likely enjoy this well-written story.

This is definitely not a book for kids, or anyone who doesn't like the previously mentioned things.

If you love dark, gritty paranormal stories, this one is definitely for you. What I really enjoyed was a refreshing take on a traditional vampire story, in which there’s no instant romance between the vulnerable female protagonist and a pale, mysterious male character. Instead, we get to know Doyle, who is no saint by any means yet who can certainly be sympathetic due to the circumstances of his past, and Lana, who after a vicious attack, becomes the one who will stop at nothing to seek revenge for the death of her beloved.
I enjoyed immensely reading about the dynamics of the relationship (not sure if it’s the right term here but it’s the closest one I could use) between the two and I applaud the author for keeping me guessing the outcome till the very end. The plot was original and fast-moving, the atmosphere - dark and eerie, but for me personally it was the characters that “made” the story. A five-star read!

A newly engaged couple is attacked, leaving one dead and the other near death. When the survivor is offered the means for revenge, she takes it despite the consequences. This is a dark paranormal tale, with believable characters and a fast-paced plot. I was riveted, reading the story from start to finish, not wanting to put it down.

There is violence, rough-edged dialogue, and several steamy sex scenes, all of which fit seamlessly into the eerie atmosphere and intriguing plot.

There is energy in the writing and the telling. Perhaps this accounts for the errors, breathless narration could lead to that. But the author feels her subject strongly.

Doyle, the main male character, drifted into becoming a vampire. An older man made him an offer he didn't, then couldn't, refuse. (He carefully plots the wooden stake thing.) He offers Lana a similar option when she is desperate - her spinal cord is damaged, her lover is dead, does she want revenge?

A glass shatters in someone's hand, vampire senses are enhanced and picks up coconuts, lilies and determination. What about the "brawn of sweat and stale breath"? Or the choice of "Nessun dorma" as ringtone? Perhaps that goes with the black Bentley and the Tudor house and mahogany sleigh bed. Anyway, these are nice details even if they don't build up to a whole picture.

Then there is the sweet toddler who giggles and seems hard of hearing, whose mother is in a drug-zone. Can you imagine these situations as motivating the inflections of the plot? I'm sorry to say I couldn't.

Handsome Doyle Cerberus labors to get food on the table for his poverty-stricken family. His father beats his mother, his eleven siblings, and him when he gets in his way. Loyalty drives him to stay until he defends himself and is fired. While in a vulnerable state, he accepts a ride to an eerie mansion. The wealthy hunchback, Victor, offers him work. Doyle doesn’t have an opportunity to turn it down after he is turned. His job is to bring women to Victor, a homely old vampire, for feedings. Doyle thirsts “for the sweet metallic taste of euphoria,” gets the leftovers, and disposes of the bodies. After many decades of service, Doyle drives a stake into Victor’s chest. Although he has the luxurious mansion and immortal life to himself, he suffers waves of guilt. On one occasion he brings five-thousand pounds to his mother to care for his increasingly growing family. He longs for a companion whom he can love and respect. When Doyle catches Lana’s scent, “a mixture of coconut, lilies, and determination,” he began to track her as if she were prey but is not attracted to Francine’s scent of vanilla.
She becomes engaged to Francine. Their happy intimacy ends with an attack by three men that leaves Lana paralyzed and heartbroken. Doyle appears and offers her a way for her to gain revenge and bring these thugs to justice. Will she become a vampire? Is she fluid enough to fall in love with a man?
Both Lana and Doyle are likeable. I enjoyed the originality of the story and its rapid pace. Author D.M. Wolfenden is a gifted British author of dark, paranormal romantic suspense.

Lana and Francine were just engaged, and life is good. Then everything turns upside down as a vicious attack leaves Lana paralyzed and lusting for revenge. Into the picture steps Doyle. He’s been obsessing about her and offers her a chance to achieve her goal. He’s also a vampire.

I thought I had this book figured out, but it quickly proved me wrong. The main characters are well-rounded. Lana is one tough woman despite her grieving heart, and Doyle has a surprisingly tender side. The story contains some erotic scenes between Lana and Francine, but the action takes precedence and zips along at a speedy past. A bunch of typos shave the tips off a star, but otherwise a 5-star read.

A long time ago I read the book Carly by this same author, so when I saw this one I decided to give it a read. The story and plot kept my interest and kept me reading. The characters are fully formed and believable. The story takes the path of revenge for Lana after being attacked and turned. The ending took me by surprise. I enjoy a story that keeps me engaged and gives me an ending that makes my time with a story worth it.

The story does contain heat. I would give it a one on the one to five scale. There is language, maybe a two on the scale. There is also violence, also a two on the scale. There is love, the root of revenge - 5/5 on the scale. This story is written in UK English which adds to the ambiance. I could imagine the scenes taking place with the language of the characters. I recommend this book for vampire lovers and revenge seekers.

Raw and edgy, this book was a complete surprise and not the short story I was expecting from this author. This is way more developed and gripped me in the same way. There was so much fire and passion in this one it took me by surprise. I loved it.

The vampire falls in love with human trope has been done a lot, and some say it is now dead. I suspect it holds a kind of enduring appeal that may wax and wane, but will probably never die - if done right. I think it was done right here.

Doyle is not the usual vampire, Lana is not the usual love interest. The plot was original enough to hold my attention till the end, and I did not roll my eyes even once!

I thought Lana being a lesbian was an interesting plot twist, and I liked how that shaped the story. Although I should have seen the ending coming, it surprised me! I hetero heroine would almost certainly have handled things differently, and that was thought-provoking in a fun kind of way.

The writing quality was good, the pace moved along well, and there was just the right amount of character development to suit the length of the story. It was an easy, fast read, and the story concludes without a cliffhanger.

The names of some of the characters, to me, were an odd choice. The hot lesbian fiancee was called Francine. Maybe there are lots of young girls in Manchester called Francine, for all I know, but to me the name evokes maiden aunt with cats. More importantly: Doyle Cerberus. Doyle I can live with, Cerberus - not. It is not a surname, it is the name of a hell-hound from Greek mythology. Doyle, though scary and having his faults, was kind of fundamentally a nice guy (which I liked about him) and I don't think really justified that kind of mythological connection. That's the only complaint I had, which is really a minor thing, so it hasn't affected the rating.

The writing is wretched. The editing is nonexistent. The tale is tawdry. The characters are stick figures. The author, on the strength of nothing more than her reckless enthusiasm to tell her story, untainted by the least smattering of professionalism, has created something so bad it’s almost good.
It’s a story about vampires, just in case there’s still some life in this genre. It’s a story that’s been told so many times it’s almost impossible to approach it without tongue in cheek. Perhaps it should have a title with some wit to it, a signal to the reader to expect something a little off the beaten track? Not a chance. Eschewing both subtlety and the lower case, the title is “UNDEAD,” of course. It’s perfect.
I would advise against any attempt to clean this up or improve it. It is so entirely true to itself, any improvement would only make it a disaster. Like the greatest works of art, it is all of a piece, the perfect embodiment of the author’s creative impulse. I would recommend it to anyone tired of reading lame, ham-handed attempts at following the dictates of the commercial press, anyone who’s had it with earnest efforts to mimic a well-made book, anyone driven crazy by prose that’s been redrafted and rewritten to the point where the author’s lost track of why he wanted to write it in the first place. You could do worse than curling up with this little gem for the afternoon.

I loved the fast pace in this book. To be honest, I had put off reading it since I’m not a big fan of this category, but man, why didn’t I read this sooner?!

The writing style hooked me in and it felt as if I was “living” in the book alongside the characters. While I feel like this genre is a bit overworked and outdated, the author proved that it will never die.

My reason for docking off a star is more because of a personal preference. When I hear the name Doyle, I think of a balding, middle-aged guy with a sweat problem. Sure, the author did a great job at describing her character a lot differently, but still.. Also, the whole fiancé thing. I understand that it was part of the story, but I still didn’t like Lana with him.

In the end, it turned out to be a great read and I would highly recommend it.

This is a bit dark, the way you'd expect a story about the undead to be. It's a story you want to keep turning the pages on, because you're never quite certain what will happen next. Will the bad turn good? Will the good turn bad? Will Doyle achieve Lana's love or at least friendship? Dark secrets lurk, waiting to turn their worlds upside down.

Some minor things are left open for the reader to imagine... but I want more. I hope there's a sequel. I want to know what happens next. Who exactly is Mo? What will happen with Gina, the toddler who makes her way into Lana's life? Is there any more to learn about Doyle's family?
