Hi! I'm Seanan McGuire, author of the Toby Daye series (Rosemary and Rue, A Local Habitation, An Artificial Night, Late Eclipses), as well as a lot of other things. I'm also Mira Grant (www.miragrant.com), author of Feed and Deadline.

Honestly? Why do I read this series? I think it's just because love her costume that much! :)

This volume covers Spider Gwen's Spider-Geddon issues. 6 out of 12.

Pretty solid beginning for a novelist. Not everyone can make that transition to comics smoothly, just ask Ta-Nehisi Coates. Even though this is a Spider-Geddon tie-in, the story stands well enough alone. Gwen is trapped on an alternate Earth and trying to find her way home in time to help her friends. The last issue is about her going to the Earths of the Spider-People who died during Spider-Geddon to let their loved ones know what happened. It's the best of the bunch. I wasn't a fan of Latour's writing on Spider-Gwen. This gives me hope McGuire's run will be better.

Pretty geeked to discover a combination of two things I’m super into lately: the books of Seanan McGuire (author of the Wayward Children series) and Spider-Gwen. McGuire takes the helm on the story of Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman aka Spider-Gwen and soon to be Ghost Spider as her tale in right in the middle of a major event which I have learned is Spider-geddon. I don’t really know, I’m sort of just stabbing into the middle of stories and just winging it and having a grand old time because this volume--which mostly functions quite well as a stand-alone--was super fun and I picked up enough through context to not worry that I have no idea whats going on for the most part outside the central narrative here. Here, Gwen is tossed from an epic battle where all her friends are in grave danger (or already in the grave) to an unfamiliar world in the multiverse. Worse, her watch is broken and she can’t get back. Worse yet, the Gwen in this world happens to be the Green Goblin and has lost her mind so we are treated to some Gwen versus Gwen action. Which is fun and McGuire does an excellent job telling this story. I’m really digging these and I’ll probably keep jumping around until I figure stuff out, which I guess is what watching cartoons was like as a kid because reruns were never in any order so you just…rolled with it and figured it’d all piece together for you eventually. Maybe that’s why I like books with fractured timelines now that I overthink it…
Anyways, Spider-Gwen rules.

Hmmm. I’ll confess that I went into this knowing nothing more about the character than the name. The last time I read a Spider title regularly was Bendis’ run on Ultimate Spider-Man, and even there I stopped somewhere in the early 100s or so. So the whole Spiderverse and Spider-Geddon and whatever were brand new to me.

In retrospect, despite this being Volume One, it's really a side story in the whole Spider-Geddon timeline, and you should probably read the main story first. I’m assuming it's been collected somewhere. This also isn't the first appearance of Spider-Gwen. Because, in comics, “Volume 1” doesn't mean the same thing that it does in the real world. In fact, evidence suggests that it means absolutely nothing whatsoever.

Anyway, this was pleasant enough. I certainly enjoyed the characters even if references to Spider-Geddon were pretty much lost on me. I certainly got the gist of everything at least.

Apparently the continuity with regards to Spider-Gwen is so screwy that Marvel have published a guide to the proper reading order inside the front and back covers of this book. We're supposed to start with Spider-Gwen Vol. 0--because of course there's a Volume 0. After that comes Spider-Gwen Vol. 1 (which is not this book; this book is Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider. The subtitle matters.) Just when you think you’ve spotted the pattern, the guide informs you that the next book to read is something called Spider-Women. THEN comes Spider-Gwen Vol. 2 and 3 …

I note that the volume I’m reviewing doesn't actually appear in their little How To Read Spider-Gwen guide. Which means that Marvel is essentially saying, “No! Don't read the book you're holding right now. Instead, go read these other books.” I recommend you do what they say.

Story: The first 3 issues of this book are basically Spider-Geddon storyline. I wasn't the hugest fan of this event. Anyway, we get to let Seanan kind of tell their story for Gwen. Right off the bat you get a different voice for her. More self-hating in ways, but still quirky, and quippy. The last issue of this collection focuses on the fallout of the event, and how Gwen will deal with the death of some of her friends.

Art: It's pretty solid overall. As always, Spider-Gwen has one of the best costumes around. I also think the action flows reasonably well, feels quick, and that's important for Spider-man type comics.

Enjoyment: I really think the last issue is powerful. It shows gwen vulnerable yet strong for her friends. She goes to each person's house who had fallen in the fight from the event, and lets their love ones know what happened. Of course each reaction is different, but Gwen holds herself up like a true hero. The last issue is very powerful and I'm interested to see where it leads to next.

What Didn't Work: The story of first 3 issues is another "What if" and they kind of getting as tired as the time traveling x-men stories. I'm kind of bored for that stuff on Spider-man. Also, being the opening chapters be so connected to an event isn't the best way to start.

Overall, it was decent for first 3 issues but the last was strong enough that I want more. A 3 out of 5.

A new writer a strong voice.

World: The art is great, the first three issues are Spider-Geddon and there is a style to the book that I really enjoyed, I love the stylish art because I think a book like Gwen's deserves a unique style and this book has it, the fourth issue I don't know if it's the same artist, sorry I didn't check but it's also very good, it looks a bit more scratchy but it's still pretty great. The world building for this book is okay, it's Spider-Geddon but not really because Gwen pretty much gets sidelined very early in the event and she spends most of her time on one world getting to know the differences in this world and her navigating it. The pieces here are nice, they are a twist of the original 616 staples, which Gwen already is so it was fun. Solid. The aftermath issue has little bits and pieces of new status quo for Gwen which I enjoyed.

Story: Well Gwen thankfully was sidelined for most of Spider-Geddon so these first three issues, although they are a tie in really is not really that tied in, only the fact that she wants to get home fast is the tie in. The three issues are paced rather well and the there are a lot of quite moments and character development here that really sets this book steady for her own series. McGuire is new to the series and Latour was amazing so I don't know what I would think with a new writer. However I am very surprised, we get Gwen, she's still moody and emo and her world is the same but there is a slight change in the voice of Gwen but it's still great. I like the tone that McGuire has set and I look forward to seeing what she does with this book (she's filling some big shoes). The Aftermath issue is emotionally charged and has more heart than the entire Spider-Geddon event which is more of a comment on the event and not this book. These 4 issues were solid, I wish her new book didn't start with an event as it had to also have that monkey on it's back but overall it was fun.

Characters: Gwen is great, new writer has changed her voice slightly but I like that each writers brings their own voice to Gwen. It's still very Gwen but the slight tweaking is interesting and hope to see where she goes in this book. There is not a lot of depth in the character this arc because of the tie in but that's fine. We also don't get a lot of the other cast of characters also because we do meet characters but they are from a different world but I wonder if we'll see them again.

Solid start that is somewhat hampered by a tie in.

Onward to the next book!

It's really rough having to start your run on a character at the same time as big event they take part in. I can't believe how good this is, despite Seanan McGuire having to tie it into Spider-Geddon. (Which was great, by the way.) But somehow, instead of just 'working around' that, she freaking uses it as a springboard to launch this series and also make me cry. Read this, and also read Spider-Geddon. Long Live Gwen Stacy.

Comic collections can be hit or miss as far as feeling like they tell a complete story, and this one is especially disjointed. It sets up the major conflict for Gwen, dumps her in an alternate dimension with a new problem to solve, and then resolves the initial conflict off-page. If you haven’t read Spider-Geddon (which I haven’t, but I got the gist), it’s like talking around a thing without ever actually naming it. All we see is build-up and fallout, with no actual turning point. The alternate universe problem gets more attention and development, and I enjoyed the quick-paced mystery there.

However, I think you can and probably should read it for the characters, Gwen in particular. I enjoy her sassy dialogue and her commitment to her friends, as well as to facing trauma and offering what closure she can when they lose teammates. I really love the Gwen/Peter/MJ/Harry friend group of the AU (and a female Green Goblin–such a McGuire move), and I wish we got more of that with our Gwen. She’s such a sad character here. The artwork is probably my favorite thing about the collection. It’s absolutely beautiful, and I love the purple/pink/teal color palette. I’m hoping the next volume feels a little more complete.

I did not expect this to be this good. And really, launching mid-event, with a mountain of continuity behind it, it really shouldn't be.

And yet.

Seanan McGuire slips into Spider-Gwen's world as easily as if she'd be writing it for the past 4 years, wrangling her complicated backstory, extensive supporting cast, and even the Spider-Geddon event into shape as well without alienating new readers. Spider-Geddon itself would be hard enough, but doing all the rest of that as well? Legendary.

The first three issues are pretty good, with Gwen coming to terms with some things by examining herself through the eyes of an alternate universe Gwen, but the fourth issue is where things really shine as Gwen visits the worlds of the Spider-People that perished during the event. It's something that none of the other Spiders, even Peter and Miles, didn't think to do, and it clearly affects Gwen in a way that no one else has seemed to even consider it might affect them.

Artwise, we have Rosi Kampe for the most part, who I believe is new to Marvel but a solid entrant into their stable, while Takeshi Miyazawa steps in for issue 4 and instantly makes Gwen's world his own. The distinctive visual style of Robbi Rodriguez was a huge selling point for the previous run, but Kampe and Miyazawa's contribution here instantly help this book establish a new identity for its new direction.

Despite everything stacked against it, somehow Spider-Gwen still remains a hit (probably even moreso than before).

I thought this would be a good entry point after watching the animated film. I was wrong. There is a whole backstory alluded to, including prison time. Then in the middle of the book, the whole "Spider-Geddon" story is skipped. The title of the collection and it's not in the book. Hmmmm.

Another of the stars of Into the Spider-Verse gets handed on to a new writer, this time Seanan McGuire - someone a lot of my friends love, but with whom I've never altogether clicked. And unlike Miles' relaunch, it's hampered by tying in to godawful sequel event Spider-Geddon, albeit fairly lightly at first. So alternate universe Gwen Stacy who's Spider-Woman gets trapped in another alternate universe where Gwen Stacy is the Goblin and it's fine, I guess? Fluently told, which isn't always the case when a prose writer first moves to comics, but nothing which conveys any strong sense of character or novelty. The fourth issue, a funereal coda, ties in more closely to aforementioned dreadful event, but at least feels distinctive, catches an emotional note beyond and beneath the standard run-through. The collection concludes, annoyingly, with a page version of a video comic that replays the opening scene slightly differently, thus causing entirely unnecessary contradictions to no good end. But really, I feel I'll have to wait for the second volume to know if this is going to work for me, because barely any of this takes place on Gwen's home Earth, and it was the manic, toxic, E-number energy the last creative team always gave that place which for me was the heart of the book.

I've always liked the Spider-Gwens comics but always felt annoyed when they never quite reached their full potential. With the change in writers, it's clear what the problem was. McGuire understands Gwen and gives her the development she deserves. Latour never managed that. I think I'll enjoy this new series quite a bit.

A fantastic read. I haven't followed much of Gwen's story (some, but not a lot) but love Seanan as an author so I picked this up and I'm really glad I did.

I didn't expect to cry but I should have known I was making a mistake there, considering the author.

Just absolutely fantastic.

I saw Seanan McGuire. I saw Spider-Gwen. I slapped that to-read button.

But now that I’ve read it, I’m more than a little disappointed. My biggest issue is that Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider is NOT an entryway to Spider-Gwen. I’m going to have to read the other Spider-Gwen comics (including Spider-geddon and the other Spiderverse comics) first to really follow along in this one. Which is especially frustrating because all along I just wanted to read Spider-Gwen written by Seanan McGuire. Darn.

I might come back to this one. I’m sure I’d enjoy it more if I had background context to understand the story.

I actually really enjoyed this. This was my first time ever reading a Spider-Gwen comic. During the Spider-geddon story, Gwens multiverse device is broken and she was kicked into a different universe. She is now tasked with finding out who in this world can help her get back to the fight. She runs into this worlds Peter and tells him her situation and asks for help. We learn there is a Gwen here and that there used to be a Spider-man. That story Peter tells Spider-Gwen was sad but a good story. The last issue was the fallout from the whole Spider-Geddon event. Gwen goes to the different universes of the people who fell in battle to tell their families what happened. Really great issue. I guess my only gripe would be the plot with the Green Goblin was fixed too fast or too easily. But yeah, overall a good first volume. Looking forward to volume 2.

In brief: Gwen Stacy (now with bonus spider powers) finds herself marooned in one of the many alternate New Yorks in the Spider-verse. First in a series.

Thoughts: Surprisingly fun! Or maybe not, considering that Marvel’s generally pretty fun, their Spiders are always my jam, and I’m a huge fan of McGuire. This is an amazing solid comic story, from the plot to the characters to the tone. I’m not sure how much of that’s McGuire’s doing vs. Marvel’s oversight, but it’s great.

It helps that this is really my first introduction to Gwen Stacy apart from the movies. She’s fun and I like her with Spider powers! She’s got some great snark and fight scenes which feel all her own, and her particular brand of Spider angst is similarly unique. McGuire is good at emotional whump.

As for the story, I can’t say much because comics are so short, but I had so much fun (and whump) visiting the parallel dimension Gwen ends up in, and seeing familiar characters in new roles. FYI: parallel dimensions and alternate realities? Also my jam. And of course, watching Gwen try to get herself home is, well, it’s a journey.

There’s really only one place where this comic falls down for me, and that’s only because as much as I love Spider-Man and the Spider-verse, I … haven’t been following the comics, like, at all. This trade collects comics on either side of a big interdimensional event, as far as I can tell, so there’s a time skip and a “what, what?!” at one point. Nobody’s fault but mine, but it did lessen my enjoyment a little.

This is an excellent comic, though. I was left entertained and satisfied and wanting more Spider-Gwen! More Spiders! More! (Not that I’ve picked up the second trade, but hey. I’m going to.) A definite rec.
7.5/10

This was surprisingly coherent for a volume full of issues that are part of tie in which I have absolutely no knowledge of. From what i can figure out apparently Marvel was doing an event called 'Spider-geddon' which seems to have a similar plotline to the Into the Spider-verse movie [which I have seen!]. The first three volumes seemed pretty self-contained and I found them enjoyable overall. The last issues focuses on some fallout and character deaths from the crossover event and includes a lot of Spider-people I have never heard of so it was kind of hard to make myself care that they died and Gwen was sad about it. Basically I just read this because I read everything that Seanan writes. I think it was interesting enough and I obviously like her writing style, but I am excited to see what she can write with this title in the future when she isn't constrained with tying it into other titles so directly.

I thought this was a pretty interesting comic! Though, there's so much spider-lore in here that I don't know about, which made it at times really hard to understand. But that's really on me, rather than the comic. I'd say the only thing I didn't really like that much was Gwen's personalities when dealing with bad guys. It sounded to Peter Parker-esque and I'd love to have seen Gwen have more of her own identity. The artistry that went into this comic though, is on a whole other level - absolutely loved the colour pallets!

I *loved* Robbie Rodriguez and Jason Latour’s Spider-Gwen run from start to finish. It was unabashedly pure to the heart of its characters and had enough spunk, style, and character to fuel an army. With their run over, however, and Spider-Gwen becoming more popular than ever courtesy of the (flawless) movie Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Gwen has a new comic with a new creative team and it’s...just okay.

I want to love this, and I *almost* do. Seanan McGuire’s writing is solid, the art is quite good and has a lot of dynamic layouts, but this first volume has the unfortunate privilege of being intrinsically tied into yet another Spider-Verse comic event.

The original Spider-Gwen run had this problem too, and it was my biggest problem with that series. This version of Gwen Stacy and the world she lives in is so exciting and unique that dragging her out of it and throwing her (and the readers of her solo series) into the umpteenth crossover feels like a disservice. And having her new series start off with just that not only makes it difficult to gauge what the new creative team’s direction for the series will be, but also makes it harder than it should be to care.

If it hadn’t been for the last issue, which is a touching retrospective on the crossover that this first volume acts as a kind of “epilogue” for, I probably would’ve let this series slip off my radar. But there’s enough emotion and characterization for Gwen in that last issue to keep me interested in what could come next.

I’m giving this 2.5 stars, with the final issue rounding it up to a 3. I’ve got issue 5 in hand right now, and hope that the series gets to find its own groove moving forward.

The title of this trade is "Spider-Geddon" and holy hell is that true. You get 12 pages of Gwen being Gwen before Spider-Ham shows up and tells her that she needs to fight some alien vampires from another dimension, then turn the page and she's already fought them and is marooned in another universe. She has to help track down that dimension's Gwen Stacy so she can get home, and when she finally does in issue 3... issue 4 jumps to the end of the event and is an "Aftermath" issue. So much of this isn't really going to make sense without having a passing familiarity with who Spider-Gwen is, what Spider-Verse was, and what Spider-Geddon is.

But damn if it isn't one of the best things to come out of that event. Issue 4 in particular is the best issue in all of Spider-Geddon and it's tie-ins. There aren't many Gwen Stacys in the multiverse, most of them end up dead. And here's our Gwen Stacy of Earth-65, alone among a multitude of Spider-people who think they're alone. All these AU Spider-Mans she meets remind her of her greatest failure, and as Spider-Geddon rages on she's going to lose more and more Peter Parkers. And in this new universe she's been stranded on, she has to save another Gwen and stop their family from falling apart. Can Gwen Stacy save Gwen Stacy? Can Gwen Stacy save Peter Parker? Can Gwen Stacy save the multiverse? Or is she too late for any of that?

This was good, but I can't recommend it unless you want to read the entire Spider-Geddon event. It just won't work as well. I did enjoy the time I spent with Gwen Stacy, though, and thought that the final issue of this bind-up was very emotionally well done, dealing with the fallout of the events in Spider-Geddon. Although my only previous exposure to Gwen was in Into the Spiderverse, I came away from this feeling I had a strong grasp of her character, and very much looking forward to reading more about her. I do wonder about this as a Hugo nomination, given that it doesn't stand alone very well, but I guess that's for the voters to decide.

I'm excited that Seanan McGuire is writing for Marvel! I'm less excited about another big crossover event that I guess this tied into?? I haven't read any of the other, uh, Spider-Geddon (sure) books and at first this was a lil confusing. I guess I got the gist of it but, ugh, quit it.

That said, I love Seanan's writing and the way Gwen's personality shines out here despite the confusing setting! I'm excited to read continuing volumes where hopefully we can just get Gwen being Gwen without so much multi-verse shenanigans.

A fun storyline about Gwen as she wanders through the multiverse trying to find a way back to her friends, who are in imminent danger. This book does reference previous stories, but I found it pretty easy to understand even without having read the earlier Spider-Gwen series. There is a complete story in this volume, and also several good character moments for Gwen. I'll certainly be following this book as it continues, and it also prompted me to go pick up some of the other Spiderverse books.

Even though I wasn't fully caught up on Gwen's storyline before reading this volume, I still think it's a stronger story than the first two volumes I read of Gwen's story. Although I do think the Green Goblin storyline resolved pretty quickly and without much fuss, the story was enjoyable and the art was solid. Got a little confused at the end of the volume what the second story was from, if it wasn't a continuation of the first. But again, I didn't read the two before this one, so I'm not holding my confusion against the volume itself.

Gwen Stacy wants to help her friends in the Spider-verse, but gets trapped in a new dimension where Gwen is Green Goblin. Can she help Peter and MJ get their Gwen back to normal, so that their Gwen can send Spider-Gwen back home?

It was OK. It’s mostly about Gwen trying to deal with the loss of friends, and trying to see the importance of her own place in her own world. But it feels very dependent on outside storylines and backstory, that it’s not a very good stand-alone. I will try the next volume and hope it gets better.
