Gigi Ainsworth bills her ketogenic primer/cookbook as She Does Keto: The Complete Ketogenic Diet for Women; however, the cookbook doesn’t especially cater to women. Which is a good thing! Because she crams her cookbook with lots of excellent ketogenic recipes that women and men would love! Whether it’s ice cream-laden chocolate chip waffles for breakfast (amazingly, just 19 net carbs!), exquisite chicken fajitas, slow-cooked shredded beef, a Lobster BLT Salad and much more, Ainsworth’s cookbook is definitely worth the price. Dieting has rarely been so delicious!
And unlike some ketogenic recipe books, which feature lots of xanthan gum and other weird ingredients (although erythritol does make an appearance), the vast majority of ingredients consists on stuff you can get at your local Kroger, Publix or Safeway. A must-read if you’re trying to lose weight.
I wanted to see if the Keto meal plan would work for me. Loaded with ideas. If you’re really serious about this eating plan, this may be the book for you. It’s very detailed. I received this book from the publisher at no charge for my honest opinion. It didn’t affect my review.
The Ketogenic Diet is one that many readers may be familiar with. I had not heard of it until about 6 months ago when I saw different talk shows referring to the new trend. My son called 4 months ago and told us he and his wife had begun the diet. I read about it, then my husband and I talked about it and started March 15. Since, I have read a couple of books and articles. I discussed it with my physician and he maintains that some of his patients too are living the Keto plan. Yes, it is a plan one must prepare for and live with. Ms. Ashworth gives us a great basis in her book. She discusses what it is and why it works. Her referral in the title, She Does Keto is because women and men have different metabolisms due to their hormones. She discusses her problems with digestion of foods and how she won the battles against stomach indigestion. I have learned after years of questioning myself why eating carbohydrates, sugars, processed foods played havoc with my entire digestive system. A year ago I stopped eating anything with processed flour. I turned to rice, potatoes, etc. to make my life grand. (Not so) Since I started avoiding carbs and sugar on the diet I feel much better. I can eat many vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, onions, asparagus and others that perpetually bloated me up. Being on the Ketogenic Diet is a way of life. I continue to read about it so I can continue to keep on the balance of sugar, carbs, and intermittent fasting. She includes recipes that are easy and give the reader ideas on how to change their daily food habits into healthy ones that help control weight, blood pressure and energy. Gigi Ashworth takes her talents in journalism and combines them with her degree in nutrition to provide us with the knowledge to begin a healthy eating platform and a way to stick with it. Yes there are times when vacations and special occasions make it impossible to stay within the Keto guidelines. Eating the best choices at the time and then returning to the program tells me that I am not ‘off the wagon’, I can return to the plan and will soon be back into ketosis. She Does Keto by Gigi Ashworth will be published on June 18, 2019 by Rockridge Press. I am certain I will refer back to this excellent guide as needed. It will be a handy guide to follow and seek answers as I need it.
This book is extremely well-done with tons of details on how to utilize the keto diet into your life and many delightful recipes. It has an extensive array of low carb recipes and identifies the macronutrient breakdown and nutritional facts of each. It is primarily a cookbook, but the extra details on how the diet works and what to expect when utilizing it in your life is very helpful.
The thing I didn't love about the book is that I only saw a couple pictures of the recipes. I would have loved to see more pictures through the book. In an age when many cookbooks have beautiful pictures for each recipe, it is hard to get excited about a recipe when I can't see what it looks like.
Overall, I thought it was great though. The author seemed relatable and I enjoyed her voice throughout. I know some people don't love the little blurbs before a recipe, but I don't mind them in a cookbook as they are easy enough to ignore, but I actually enjoy reading them as it can really bring the recipe to life for me. Hers are very entertaining throughout the book and I enjoyed the addition.
If there were more beautiful pictures added, preferably for each recipe, it would for sure be a 5 star! As is, I don't think words are persuasive enough for me to make the recipes. I'm a tired mom who needs some visualization to motivate me to make it! But it is still a lovely cookbook if you don't mind not seeing the pictures. Perhaps there are others without children who have more creative energy left by the afternoon. The added info on utilizing the diet into your life is also a feature that scores it some points too!
An introduction to keto for women, and a good cookbook for anyone doing keto.
She Does Keto offers a good introduction to the Ketogenic diet in Part 1. Basic information that a woman would need to know to start and maintain keto successfully is given. It also includes a list of ingredients that are keto-compliant, one that has ingredients to avoid and a three-week meal plan.
Part 2 (about 80% of the whole book) is actually a collection of recipes. (The subtitle needs to be tweaked.)
You wouldn't believe some of the ingredients used in some so-called keto cookbooks, but She Does Keto features recipes with ingredients that are not likely to kick you out of ketosis (though a few would if you overindulge.) This makes it very useful for the beginner who might not be so discerning at first.
The author is sensitive to dairy, soy and nuts so there are fewer recipes that include these foods.
The recipes are divided into these categories:
Breakfast, Sides and Snacks Soups and Salads Vegetarian Main Meals Seafood and Poultry Beef and Pork Desserts Beverages Sauces and Dressings
I'm always happy to see some easy everyday type of dishes in a cookbook, and some for maybe a bit more special occasions. In this aspect, this book does not disappoint.
Thank you to Netgalley and Fairwinds Press for the review copy. This is my honest review.
Finally a Keto diet book just for the female bodily needs. My husband and I were recommended the keto diet, we are both over weight. We began and he lost a lot of weight. I got sick, dizzy, nauseous and in a lot of pain. After two months on the diet I had to have my gall bladder removed. I was eating all the wrong foods for me.
The veggie focus of She Doe Keto would have saved me months of pain and a surgery. I wish this book would have been out two years ago. Thank you Gigi for writing this book.
The recipes are delicious and nutritious and tailor made for women. Gigi was very thoughtful and inclusive in her advice and explanations. I highly recommend this book.
Good book for women who want to do the Keto diet. Yummy recipes, shopping lists and a good intro on what to eat and what not eat.
I’ve personally been doing lazy Keto for years (without knowing about Keto) but recently had to change it all do to IVF and to help with the health of my eggs.
I’m greatful this book is out and talks about Keto for Women! Because our bodies are different and even though I love bacon, eating it three times a week in the “one-for-all” meal plan was not what I wanted to do.
This is a great start for a healthy you!
I received this ebook copy from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.
Meh? I was hoping for some deeper science on how Keto should be done differently for men and women. There was some stuff on that, but it wasn't deep enough or well cited. I think I'll try maybe five of the recipes, although I'm a pretty picky eater, so other people might enjoy many more of them. A fine book, just not one I'd remember the name of or go out of my way to recommend to a friend.
I was brand new to the keto world before I downloaded this book and I honestly thought it would have been harder to change my lifestyle to adopt new changes. But this cookbook made it so much easier and tastier along the way!
This is definitely a great read for those. Just starting out on the keto way of eating. Very good recipes in this book some that I didn’t even have. Great job.
Easy to follow recipes that actually turn out as good as they look. I found myself utilizing this book more than once when planning menus for the week.
