Story: ☆☆
Art: ☆☆☆☆

I can't in good conscience recommend this series. Go read The Promised Neverland instead.

What's funny is, I could've sworn I wrote a review for this like last year, and yet . . . it seems to have disappeared? and here I am again, now my memory of the details of this manga have faded, but the scars. . . oh, the scars remain.

Was it the hanging-children-naked-from-the-ceiling-as-a-form-of-punishment?

Was it the excessive depiction of child gore?

Was it the blatant disregard of Reg's privacy under the excuse that "he's just a robot after all"?

Like, is no one going to talk about how Riko lit-er-ally sexually assaults Reg while he's sleeping by "investigating" his lit-er-al anus???? No one????!!! NO ONE??!! DID I IMAGINE THAT SCENE OR ARE Y'ALL TRIPPIN'???

I suffered through all of that, would've even been able to look past it all if this series had a deeper message to tell, an important theme to address, some kind of meaning, even . . . but nine volumes in and they don't even have a good story to tell. All it does is pander to some bizarre fandom.

At first I hated Made in Abyss because it turned out to be just one of those booooring adventure stories that goes on forever without any actual purpose or progression. But just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it turned into an infodump on characters who I didn't give two shits about, whose desperation created a dark, twisted village I couldn't give two shits about, then it became a battle whose outcome I most certainly gave no flying fucks about. Everything was just so meandering and irrelevant and frustrating to flip through, and at the end of it all, I forgot why we were even there in the first place. What was our goal, again? Wait, where am I?

The arcs are lazy and nonsensical, introducing plot points and characters who we neither care about nor who actually matter to the overarching story. Even the art gradually reduces to blobs of unformed mass. I'll be dropping this one, for sure.

As I saw Faputa shove her entire arm down Reg's throat, and hold him above her as he vomits onto her, I asked myself "do I enjoy reading this manga at all anymore?" The answer is no.

I'm giving up on the series, I can't endure this borefest of an arc for one more volume.

Just when you think this cannot be creepier and more bizarre than it already is... Yet I just wanted to keep reading

I definitely wouldn't say it's boring...but it can be a challenge to read sometimes..
A story momentum that once was going down the Abyss is kind of stuck and some graphic stuff that once you realise what's going on...is !?!?!?

Well, I’m officially putting this series on hold. With the exception of Vol. 8, this series appears to be losing its novelty.

I don’t care. I just don’t care.

At least with Vol. 8 we got some backstory and it was tragic and emotional and I do love a good tragic and emotional backstory.

It was a well-needed break from the main storyline, which has stalled.

What IS happening anymore? What happened to following Riko and her dream of becoming a White Whistle and finding her mother? What even happened to the character-arcs surrounding the White Whistles? They were awesome! They’re heroes to the people above but down below they’re tormentors and have been stripped of their humanity. That’s good shit! Where’d it all go?

Also: THAT scene with Reg made me want to throw up.

That's a wrap...this is the last volume I'll shelve and wish I would've thrown in the towel sooner. What started out as a potentially interesting adventure story of an orphan girl & robot boy descending into a pit of doom has morphed into a mundane battle of blob metropolis that appears is going to last for-ev-er. This series really went into the abyss.

Reg returns to Iruburu with Faputa's ear. Secrets are revealed and the battle between Faputa and Iruburu begins in earnest. While that may sound climactic as all get-out, this volume doesn't quite manage to reach the same gooey heights as Tsukushi's previous Iruburu/Juroimo melee.

I think the biggest issue I had with this volume is that this it's the first book of MiA to feel...well...same-y, to me. Once again the culmination to the various histories and mysteries of the cast is a throw-down between Reg and another character. This time interspersed with flashbacks shedding light on Faputa and Reg's past together. It's still riveting stuff, more than ever Tsukushi is on-point with his art. But, it's also frustrating? By the time I got to this volume's cliffhanger I was feeling a little hard-done by the pacing.

Another strike against MiA volume 9 is an issue that's oft-complained about for the series overall, but bears particular mentioning here: Not enough Riko! For a character who's meant to be the protagonist, Tsukushi really gives her the short shrift. I think she utters a single sentence this volume? Two maybe? She's a big topic of conversation between the characters to be certain, but usually in the context of needing protection from all the otherworldly chaos erupting around her. It feels at times as though Tsukushi has betrayed her and allowed Reg to usurp her status as protag. I can only hope that he returns her to a more focal position in the narrative. I miss her energy!

Surprisingly for me, the section of the book I found most touching involved Nanachi and Belaf. I say surprising because the sequence interrupts the main narrative action, and relies on a scene similar to the one that concluded volume 3. Rather than repetitive, I actually found myself moved by this mournful moment of calm amidst the carnage.

So, all in all, entertaining. But if you've been impatient with the Iruburu arc and were hoping this volume would sail you clear out of that most fleshy of cities, keep hoping! I really do think there's some great stuff here, and look forward to volume 10. Fingers crossed that the conclusion to Iruburu makes the bumpy, tentacular ride worth it!

I initially wasn't sure if I liked Faputa much. But she's gone from this weird, feral animal with way too much power to...well, she's still all those things, but she isn't any of them by choice. It's just her nature. And the development she's had over the years--her attachment to Reg and Gaburoon, the hints of civility and hope for the future that arose from those connections, the pain of being alone for so long and the internal conflict that arose because of it--in the end, all of that has ended up in conflict with what she was born to do. She's complex and sympathetic, but also utterly alien and horrifying in her mindset and abilities.

There is no way this ends well for anyone involved. Even discounting the damage Faputa and Reg have already caused, they aren't the same people they were when they first met. Even if their confrontation doesn't end in death, it's going to irrevocably change whoever is left standing.

And what a confrontation it's been: a fight on both physical and psychological fronts. Sadly, the former of those does dip back into an issue I've had with Made in Abyss in the past: the fight scenes can be so frenetic at times that it's not always clear what's going on. But that's really my only complaint about this volume.

...ok. Um. I...I don't know. I'm not going to give up on this series. I will say this: you need to prepare to read this...the gore, oh my god the CARNAGE, Tsukushi's sexualization of young female characters (a problem with manga outside of him, but the point still stands), and other such things. I wouldn't be surprised if the animators dropped the project purposefully so they didn't have to animate this arc and forward.
The lore is beyond fascinating. The art is incredible. I've fallen in love with the story, its themes of fate, and especially value (who defines it, how much of it is within us, how much is projected, how to 'balance' the value of someone how has stolen something of higher value than themselves...fascinating, truly.)
I'm stubborn. I won't give it up, yet...but I understand why many would throw in the towel after this one.

A great story and manga, or would be if not for the fact that the author is a full p*d*ph*le. The manga features some disturbing and/or gross depictions of children right in your face from time to time (which, in case anyone wonders, do not add anything to the deeper meaning of the story and come literally out of nowhere). Do not read if not ready to scroll past such imagery, and please do not buy. A censored version is available on reddit.

Faputa wants to get her revenge with Regs help but he doesn't remember their relationship before losing his memory. While she's destroying the village/Mother and it's inhabitants, Nananchi is set free by Belaf. Nananchi finally let's go of Mitty and Reg and Faputa face off with one another.

4.25 ★ — Idk why this arc has so many haters, we finally have filler and story and not just keep going layer by layer (barely rememberable moments) . I thought this was pretty cool and the characters backstory and design were peak.

Faputa begins her revenge on the village

Review:
Faputa is crazy, super crazy. Poor Reg... that one scene with her attacking him on the inside was nightmarish and hobestly wtf... I am finishing this manga, I got this far. The low rating is for that panel, sorry.
