Rebuild Your Bones: The 12-Week Osteoporosis Protocol

Rate this book
Your first step on the path to total bone health   An osteoporosis diagnosis can feel like a debilitating life sentence—one that leaves you feeling stuck with a future of prescription drugs that only might keep the condition from worsening. Mira Calton, CN and Jayson Calton, PhD have discovered a better way to prevent and even reverse the disease through the power of micronutrient therapy. The secret to building strong bones lies in the right combination of micronutrients— the vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids in the foods we eat and supplements we take.   In Rebuild Your Bones, the Caltons reveal how our dietary, lifestyle, and even supplementation routines may be depleting these essential micronutrients, and share the 40 healing habits scientifically proven to build stronger bones. They also provide an easy-to-follow plan to reverse these effects, including recipes and meal plans, exercise advice, and supplement recommendations. If you’re looking for a pharmaceutical-free way to restore your bone health, look no further—this is the definitive guide to safely and naturally stave off osteoporosis and reclaim your health.

If you are concerned about osteoporosis or osteopenia then I recommend reading this book. It gives good information to help you on the path to building stronger bones. Micronutrient deficiency is something I was not aware of until a family member was diagnosed with osteopenia. While I probably won’t go full on in their approach, I did find some helpful tools to help me in my quest to build better bones. Also interesting was how much of what we ingest or put on our skin affects our bones. Foods that I thought were healthy were actually leaching calcium from my bones. It seems daunting but when you know better you do better. I’ll definitely put some of what they discuss in my arsenal. The aging process can appear to loom over our heads but knowledge is key. My approach is to gather the information and use what I know to build a better me. Some parts of the book were easy to understand while other parts did get a bit technical.

The number of stars is insignificant here; what matters is whether or not you buy into their program. At age 30, Mira Calton was diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis, and set out on a quest for further information. Some years later, she and Jayson had not only stopped the disintegration of her bones, but improved their quality, using their plan of identifying the loss of micronutrients and changing her diet, supplements, and lifestyle.
They explain how a variety of factors can affect micronutrient deficiencies, which, in turn, can lead to osteoporosis and other diseases. Simply taking vitamins and other supplements isn’t the solution, as most of the nutrients in commercial brands compete with one another, so few are properly absorbed. This is discussed in great detail, as well as their recommendations for buying organic, and avoiding other sources damaging to the immune system. Furthermore, in evaluating six of the most popular diets, they discovered that none of them contains enough nutrients to meet the RDI, and their important Omega 3/omega 6 ratios are particularly skewed.
The most difficult part for many readers following the program will be giving up both sugar and wheat products, plus all their recipes include ingredients that can only be purchased from them. On the other hand, if you choose not to purchase supplements from them, they provide charts to help evaluate your own brands. Though written in conversational style, the medical details make some of the reading slow (I’m reading some parts for the 2nd and 3rd time). However, their website also includes “on the couch” videos that accompany each chapter, and the book is well documented. They also provide lists of suggested lifestyle and dietary changes ('Forty Healing Habits'). Though the book requires critical thinking (and still leaves me with some questions), I would highly recommend it for anyone seriously researching the topic.

I must admit I stopped reading at the end of page 120 when I read, “Try not to touch cash register receipts unless it is absolutely necessary. “ I truly believe this book has some valid points but it’s main mission is to sell the author’s products and services. I looked into some of their medical statements and they are completely debunked by such authorities as Harvard Medical School. Hard pass.

At first some helpful information regarding meds recommended for osteoporosis, but then moved on to products the authors sell.

Had a lot of insightful information but the diet they suggest is totally meat based and not suitable for vegetarians or Asians. They basically tell you to avoid all lentils and gluten and rice. More like a paleo/keto diet. A lot of the recipes include them marketing their supplements.

I’ll give it 2 stars because there is some good info about nutrients in here, but trying to follow their protocol would require more time, money and perseverance than most people have. This book is a commercial for their products first and foremost.

I’ve been a huge fan of the Caltons and their work in the health, wellness and lifestyle industry for many, many years.
I was excited to finally read their latest book and it definitely did not disappoint. This is a great book to read regardless of an osteoporosis diagnosis or not.
The book is loaded with lots of tips and tricks on how to hack/optimize your life.. and loads of delicious recipes to incorporate into program.

Get ready to take lots of notes because this book is full of amazing takeaways!!

This book helped me when I was looking for natural ways to start to reverse my osteoporosis. The nutrition competition part of the book was a bit overwhelming, but I was glad I had it there to reference when needed. I liked that the book lays out why traditional osteoporosis drugs are harmful and why it makes sense to aim for a natural approach/lifestyle makeover prior to going on medication. Many actionable takeaways. Any book that helps us find a root cause of disease vs. immediately suggesting medication is a win! Enjoyed this message of hope and how-to around improving our bone health. I recommend this book to others with osteoporosis, osteopenia, or concerned about their bone health.

The Carltons have an agenda to promote their supplements. Nutrition is important but other factors are also important. Little mention of exercise.

Very often secondary conditions are possible for osteoporosis but this is barely mentioned. The authors go on and on about micro nutrients and provide recipes.

I'm glad I read this because it has valuable information about osteoporosis and how to improve bone density in "natural" ways. I got the hardcover on Amazon in November and it took me until mid-February to get through it. It's dense reading, and at the end of each chapter they suggest joining them "on the couch" (i.e., online) for additional info. If that info was important, it should have been in the book. When I'm in reading mode, I don't want to go online for more.

The dietary guidelines are for 3 months only, but very restricted, and at odds with other nutritional advice I've received for detoxification and gut health, leaving me few viable meal choices. They say it's good for any sort of diet choice like vegan, KETO, gluten-free, etc., but many of the included recipes were not adaptable to the Pescatarian Paleo diet we normally eat because they had a lot of dairy. Many of the recipes use their supplements, and I did order many of those and found that they helped me feel better, so that's a big bonus, and I will continue to use their products. I also really appreciated learning what they had to say about micronutrients.

Bottom line: Not fun reading, not easy to follow, but I believe the advice is sound and I'm glad to have found this after a friend who followed the program and recommended the book shared that her bone density improved significantly following this protocol.

I wanted to read more about how to reverse osteoporosis/osteopenia. Over all, it is well worth reading to gain an understanding of the process of bone building & the role nutrients play in the process. The authors provided a lot of helpful background information about osteoporosis, bone building process, popular prescription drugs and how they address the problem, nutrition & diets. They compared benefits & disadvantages of most popular diets (low fat, low carb, keto/paleo, vegetarian/vegan, lectin, gluten free) as well as nutritional information. Also provide in-depth analysis of OTC vitamins/supplements, how they work together & when to take them. They offer tips on how to choose a protein supplement. They discourage the inclusion of copper in supplement due to link to Alzheimers, sweeteners, dyes, pill coatings, fillers & other additives. They offer a quiz for evaluating your daily vitamin supplement. The quiz is biased because they are promoting their product.

I ended up skimming through a lot of the last 400 pages because this was only a book selling products. I hoped to get some good information still, but it is obviously way too biased to be logical. Think about it this way, if every single option out there has flaws except the one you created then it's going to be difficult to trust you as a source.
If you were diagnosed with osteoporosis, skip this one and look for a book by a physician that has had good success treating osteoporosis and is not selling a product. Or just skip straight to reading studies yourself.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has Osteoporosis. The manufactured Osteoporosis meds might not be the answer for all of us. Especially if we don't want the side effects. The authors of this book walk us through how to heal bones by diet, vitamins, and exercise. The recommendations are thorough and they back up their ideology with research.

The information in this book is fantastic. 5 stars
The recipes are meh. They all contain a product that you'd have to buy from the Rebuild your Bones website. 3 stars

I did enjoy the information in this book, but there were a lot of sales pushes for the products in the recipes. If you have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis, I recommend this book. You will learn a lot.

A very frustrating read. Basically left me feeling like it is impossible to get the correct nutrients, in the right order, in the right amounts, etc, without dedicating every waking moment to food planning and supplement buying. Except of course, you can just buy their stuff! Hmm…
A depressing book.

This book is nothing more than a long advertisement for their supplements. They set up a long and elaborate no-win scenario for people with osteoporosis unless you take their supplements - and only their supplements. Diet, exercise, meds, supplements will all fail you. Plan to die unless you take their supplements. Really glad this was a library borrow. Don’t waste your time.

Just a fancy sales pitch to sell their own supplements. No reason to read far into this one. I recommend Great Bones by Keith McCormick and working with a functional practitioner.

Tip of the day - don't buy any supplements that are not third party tested and from a company with a reputation for quality ingredients and manufacturing.

Interesting approach. It probably would be very successful. However, it would be very difficult for a vegetarian (or vegan) to follow without taking a lot of supplements. Personally, I would find the protocol very difficult to follow, but there are takeaways I can add to my routine.

Worth reading if you have osteoporosis. Micronutrients information very interesting. Gives you a lot of information to think about. They are also selling their own product line.

All about supplements (that they sell) and not enough about foods already rich in micronutrients.
