The leadership and goal achievement methods set forth in this book are great. The book is built on football references, but it is not a football book. There is a lot of name dropping, which will be most interesting to Kansas State fans, but the multiple quotes and interviews of players and coaches are there to reinforce the credibility of the book's statements. This is a book about how to lead, how to manage, and how to achieve goals.

Coach Bill Snyder took charge of arguably the worst college football team in the history of college football and through the use of his leadership skills and management, he turned the program around and made it into one of the best football programs in college football and he did so in a relatively short period of time. He did this not through recruiting a team full of superstar players, but through changing the way the program operated top to bottom. He changed the culture of the organization and turned if from a culture of losing, to a culture based on values with constant emphasis on achieving goals that are inline with those values.

The first lesson: "Goal attainment is a three-step process: a) significant goals are set based on priorities/values; b) a well-constructed plan is put into place; and c) a "just do it" attitude is adopted." sets the tone of the book. His attitude and philosophy toward leadership and goal achievement is quite simple and reasonable, but it also seems like it is rarely found in today's management systems or even society as a whole. His basic leadership principle is to set goals that are based on your values, develop a plan to achieve those goals, and then spend every moment trying to work toward those goals. Your goals are what matter. Every decision you make is either taking you toward your goals or away from them. If your decisions are taking you away from your goals, then you are wasting time and energy. You may not always make great strides toward your goals, but as long as you are moving toward them and getting closer, you are doing the right thing.

This is a very good book on leadership, integrity, and how to manage with respect and to manage a system where everyone from the custodian to the top performer on the team or company understands that they are part of a team and have an important role to play in helping the group reach its goal. Everyone is important. Everyone needs to be giving their best. Everyone needs to treat every other person in the organization with respect and equality.

5 stars for quality of the philosophy. 3 stars for the readability (especially for those not from KSU). It needed less name dropping and more on his leadership.

I did mark this book as willing to swap, but the book is autographed and says "Thanks Jay for being a great Wildcat fan" so I'm not going to send this to just anybody.
