Pepper Brooks #5

Literally Stalked

Rate this book
“I love you to death”

Winter quarter of grad school has Pepper living and breathing Brontë sisters. When a body is found near the mysterious mansion on the hill, Pepper is too close to the victim for comfort… and perhaps the killer.

Pepper’s interest in the case becomes an obsession when Alex is threatened. Between mysterious notes, long-buried secrets, and that feeling someone is watching, Pine Crest starts to feel a whole lot like the gothic moors of Wuthering Heights. The line between love and obsession is as thin as a knife’s blade—literally—and it’s up to Pepper to find the killer before they strike again.

Readers, this is the fifth book in a literary-themed cozy series. If you get a shiver of excitement after reading an eerie scene and prefer books with a few brooding men hanging around the moors—ahem—town, you’re going to love this creepy winter mystery. And if the Brontës aren’t your jam, no worries, each book features a different classic author. ;) Happy reading!

About the author

Eryn Scott

Eryn Scott is the author of heartwarming cozy mysteries. Her novels feature close friendships and strong families because those are the most important things in her life -- a little humor doesn't hurt either.

She calls the Pacific Northwest home and doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Eryn loves to hike, horseback ride, knit, ski, and read. She believes musicals are the greatest thing since lattes, even though she's not particularly good at singing or dancing -- hey, a girl can dream, right?

Her first cozy mystery series, Pepper Brooks, is based on some of the greats in classic literature. Each book features a different author from Shakespeare to Austen. Eryn's newest series is set in a little town called Stoneybrook. The Stoneybrook Mysteries follow local jam-maker Hadley James as she solves mysteries in her town's year-round farmers market. From deceased knitters to sabotaged florists, these crafty citizens keep Hadley and her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, on their toes. Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries are great for readers who love a hint of paranormal with their mysteries. These books feature a tiny town tucked between craggy coastline and rocky shores with quirky characters of both the living and non-living variety. Look for new releases from all three of these series in 2022 as well as Eryn Scott's new cozy series.

This series is bookish perfection.

Pepper makes my book addicted inner self so jealous. From book discussions at the school, to her bookshop and new housing arrangement—swoon! The author does a fantastic job at weaving bookish nods throughout the story. Literally Love It.

This has to be the best installment yet. I probably say that with each book in this series, but this book is peek character growth for so many people. I can't fathom how it's going to be topped with the last book looming ahead. The ending, omg. I'm not even going to talk about it, but I cried, laughed and squealed.

As with the other mysteries Pepper has investigated, this one has it's own literary flair. It's more complex than we are first to believe, and ends up solving two cases in one. I love the traits that the author gave Pepper. As a sleuth she is nagged by solving the puzzle, and is often wrong about case in some way. She is humble yet curious, and I love it.

You're going to love this series if you are obsessed with books, and enjoy fairy tale endings with a splash of murder.

Past hurts erupt into violence

A good read. Okay not my favourite, possibly because the books quoted aren't either. Really disliked Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights after being forced to do them in Eng Lit - liked them before. A plot of murder, threats, love, assault and revenge. But is it all done by the same culprit. This had me really fooled as guessed the gender but really missed out on who did it.
She and her BFF are both moving. She's moving into the apartment above her book store and her BFF is moving into the house she and her have just purchased. This together with running the bookstore and finishing her course means she's run ragged. Plus her nemesis is also in her small group and finds a way to niggle her at every turn. When one of the other students is murdered - not only the group but the whole town is in shock. Who and why? A stalker, threats, Alex getting attacked and more all culminating into a race to stop the killer getting away. Who is it?

A wonderful romantic cozy mystery story!

I am binge reading through this series. These stories are so much more than just your run-of-the-mill cozy mysteries. A little romance and quotes from some of the literary greats are an added bonus. I have said it before, and it is worth saying again… I love the characters in this series and the development of their family, friend, and romantic relationships as the series progresses. Each book released is just a little better than its predecessor. I am anxiously awaiting book six to be released.

The books are well-written, entertaining, fun and easy reads. If you enjoy a good mystery with a young adult as the heroine, then this is a series you will not want to miss reading.

Excellent

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.

I have had more fun with this series! Most of the books mentioned within the series are books I love or have read. I cannot wait until the next book is written.

One of my other favorite things about the series is how comfortable I am with the characters! They are friends in the series, but are friends to me. When an author is able to develop and write characters as this author is, she is writing pure gold.

The conversation in Pepper's classes remind me of my English classes. For me, the discussions between the classmates are logical and passionate. Makes me want to take some classes now!

Eryn Scott has mastered the genre of cozy mystery! Her books keep me guessing & that is a sign of a sharp mind. I had no inkling who the bad guy was till the end. That means that I have guessed wrong with all 5 books! That is incredibly difficult to do with me, congratulations Ms. Scott!

If you haven't read the other books in the series, I strongly recommend that you read them in order to get to know the characters & stay in chronological order. It's so much more fun to read a book with friends in it anyway. The Pepper Brooks Cozy Mystery books are fun, clean, and extremely well done. Enjoy!

Good

In the dead of winter, all is quite in Pepper Brooks’ world, that is right up until the body of her classmate is discovered.
With the addition of threatening letters, and some weirdness at home, Pepper has a lot to worry about, fortunately her man and his father are on the case, and they’re not afraid to ask Pepper for her help…

This is the penultimate book in the series apparently, so there’s quite a lot going on, and a lot of it is excitement unrelated to the case at hand! It’s possible to read this one as a standalone, but since previous books and cases are referenced, it’s best to read in order.
Our main characters, Pepper, Alex and his Dad Mateo, Liv and her boyfriend Carson, all appear for relatively normal reasons, while Nate is his usual, sweet and spooky self (personally I think it is deliberate) and provides the reader with a laugh.
Hamburger provides the cuteness, which offsets the cold and wintry tone of this tale, with its Brontë sisters theme (appropriate).
It all rounds out to an enjoyable cosy mystery, with a set of lovable characters.
A fast and fun read for the cosy mystery enthusiast.

Eryn Scott writes my favorite cozy mystery series! I love all the literary connections in each Pepper Brooks book. It is fun to learn more about books I haven't read and to see ones I have featured.

In this book Pepper and Alex's relationship features heavily and I enjoyed getting to see more of them together. They are perfect for each other and I really like that they have both found work that they love, Alex as a cop and Pepper running the bookstore.

The mystery was also well done and kept me interested as clues and suspects were revealed. Pepper and Liv teaming up to investigate was a highlight of the story too. Their friendship has been such a big part of the series I am glad they spend so much time together now that they aren't roommates anymore.

Literally Stalked could be read as a standalone as the mystery unfolds across this book only. However, I do recommend reading the other books in the series first so you can get to know Pepper, the other characters, and the small town they live in!

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

Loved it. Loved the ending!
wow - how to review without giving anything away ...
ok so by now we all know that Pepper stumbled upon a murder and despite her boyfriend cop asking her to stay out of the investigation, she manages to be an integral part of the investigation. We can also all assume the first dozen or two - ok maybe a little exaggeration there - suspects she names are wrong, she does finally end up at the right place at the right time just not for the right reason! Suffice to say, this one surprised me! Thank you, Eryn Scott.

If you are looking for a feel good reading experience, this book has it all. Mystery, romance, murder and lots of suspects. Pepper and Alex are fun and find themselves in some interesting situations. A real murderer was a surprise and all of the other individuals who committed the other crimes were a good twist. A story worth reading.

I think this might be my favorite Pepper book so far. Eryn Scott is a master of weaving the classics (that I previously had zero interest in) with a modern cozy mystery in this series. That mastering gets better with each installment of the Pepper series. I will be sad to see this series end next year.

One of my favourite of Eryn Scott’s Literally series, this book has it all…murder, romance, chuckles, and suspense. This book was a surprise ending in more than one way!! It had me guessing and it had me in tears. I admit, it was a little slow in a couple spots, but the rest of the book made up for it. Please, if you’ve read the previous books in this series, you have to read this one.

Great Series, Great Book

I so enjoy this series. It might have to do with the best friends dynamics, or maybe the father/son relationship, or the boyfriend/girlfriend thing. Or maybe it could be the thing about also being an English major/literature lover.
I highly recommend this series.

Favorite One Yet

Favorite character has to be Nate. He's so quirky and fun! Nicholas D. Lowry, of Antiques Roadshow, always comes to mind when I read his part in the books. So much fun!

Pepper is at it again - working to solve a murder when it only puts herself in danger. When a friend is murdered, and she finds herself receiving threatening notes, Pepper cannot sit this one out.

But can she help solve the murder before the murderer comes knocking on her door?

The Pepper Brooks series is one of my favorites. As an English teacher, I love a good cozy series that is focused on books in some way, so I really love that Scott themes each of these mysteries after a particular author of focus. This time? The Bronte sisters.

So. Fun. Y'all.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest installment in the Pepper Brooks series! So much so that I finished it in just about 24 hours. I have enjoyed each book but this is definitely my favorite. I'll admit all of the literature references lose me but that doesn't lessen my enjoyment of the series.

I'm happy to say that Liv and Pepper's friendship played a more integral part in this book than in the previous which made it my favorite along with interactions with other key characters. I love this town, the people in it, the small businesses that are its heart and soul....such a fun ride. I can see myself re-reading these even though I know how they turn out, just so I can re-visit Pepper and her crew. It's going to be a long time waiting for the next release in 2020!
