I would love to personally know these people

I had given up on writing reviews a long time ago until reading this series. I went on a rollercoaster ride with the characters and could not get off till the end. Both authors are to be commended, together or apart. Now I am searching for more of their work.

Ten books

I read this 10 book series and enjoyed it. The characters faced many trials, some made it some didn't. It ties things together at the end in surprising ways. Worth the read.

I purchased this set as an omnibus edition when I saw it offered as a daily deal through Kindle. Having grown up on Irwin Allen movies (way to date myself), post-apocalyptic stories are a guilty pleasure so I couldn’t pass this one up. Plus, the price was right.

I’m not sure if the Long Fall series is in the YA genre or not; I may not actually be in the authors’ target demographic. However, I found the story (mostly) very entertaining and engaging. I was fortunate to have the omnibus edition as the authors were quite adept at ending installments on a cliff hanger. On a few occasions I could see the cliffhanger coming, but several of them caught me by surprise. I can’t imagine reading this in serial form as it was originally released and having to wait a month or so for the next installment. Unfortunately, I felt that the ending was rushed and seemed to fall flat.

I’m going to add a spoiler warning here – continue at your own risk.

The premise of the series is that in response to strident cries to “do something” about climate change, a megacorporation (I can’t remember the name, maybe Cyberdyne?) comes forward with a plan to build a solar shield between the Earth and the Sun that would allow sunlight to be modulated and control global temperatures. I had a hard time envisioning the technological feasibility of this, but the “how” really isn’t relevant to the story so I was able to easily set it aside. Since there was such a need to “do something,” the megacorp was given the green light and a blank check to build the solar shield.

In order to ride the wave of public panic, the megacorp launches the project as fast as possible, taking short cuts on things like failsafe protocols and the means to shut off the shield if necessary. See, the megacorp secretly had plans to monetize sunshine – if you wanted the right amount of sunshine to allow agriculture in your country, be prepared to pay. Never mind the geo-political instability that would be caused in a nuclear and bio-weapon armed world.

Once in place, the solar shield kicks off a new ice age that advances with amazing speed. If you’ve seen the movie The Day After Tomorrow, you’ll be able to visualize how rapidly the “Killer Cold” (as it’s called in this series) advances. I have read about mammoths being discovered in permafrost with temperate plant material in their stomachs, so this part rang true.

At this point, the book bounces around several groups and individuals as they attempt to survive the crisis. The primary characters are Brittany, a college age girl in the Midwest acting as nanny to the two children of the woman who runs the megacorp; Luckman, a climate scientist in Antarctica who is the first to recognize the coming catastrophe; and Michelle, an investigative journalist who is working on an expose of the megacorp and finds herself the target of corporate assassins.

Overall, the characters are interesting and likable. Luckman’s story arc is the most engaging as he tries to make his way from Antarctica to New York City ahead of the advancing “Killer Cold” as he calls it. Over the course of his journey, he survives two plane crashes, the Titanic-like sinking of a ship and numerous other perils while also dealing with a cowardly and treacherous fellow scientist named Holtz. Although I found some characters to be very similar to each other (Chuck, Bob and the man who traveled with Colton, for example, almost seem interchangeable), the characters were interesting and not overly annoying. One discordant note: the “future” glimpses featuring Brittany that began each installment once the freeze was in full swing didn’t seem to match the character in the main body of the novel. I kept waiting to see the character change in the main body, but she never really did. I guess this was a plot trick to provide some foreshadowing without giving too much away.

The corporate goons that were tasked with assassinating Michelle quickly went from sinister to really annoying. Their plan to use force to take control of the megacorp while the world was ending around them was pretty laughable but not entirely out of character. I wanted more from the CEO of the megacorp – some realization that her personal greed turned her into the greatest mass murderer in history. What we got was an admittedly prolonged death from a gunshot wound although Michelle and Bob did their best to make her comfortable, some remorse over her lost children and sadness about her long-lost love – the man who created the solar shield and then faked his death when he realized her plan – miraculously returned from the dead but was then shot by her thugs.

Here's where the series seemed to fall flat. In the authors’ notes, they repeatedly stated that the series would run 10-12 parts; it ended with Part 10. However, I found the final installment to be very rushed and everything ended just too conveniently – therefore I wonder if this was meant for YA readers. Now, I did some internet digging on Logan Keys, mainly looking for any other works she has published. She seems to have gone dark online prior to the pandemic. I believe that I saw mention that her husband was active-duty military; maybe a deployment or PCS orders put her writing on hold. I’m thinking that something in the real world forced the series to be cut off early.
My main complaint with the ending of the novel is that it appeared to me that there were two waves of “Killer Cold”: one from the north and one from the south that forced the various characters to the same general area along the Arizona/Mexico border. However, the series ends with all the characters finding safety at Fort Huachuca where the Army has set up a fully functional vestige of civilization with thousands of survivors. Most of the characters in the series survive by finding shelter underground. How did thousands of people survive at Fort Huachuca along with electricity, fuel and ample food?

The series also saw pretty much all the characters that survived being reunited with loved ones at Fort Huachuca. Even the annoying guy that caused so much trouble in Brittney’s group turned out to be the father of the moody but capable teenage girl that Colton teamed up with. The wedding of Brittney and Colton at the end of Part 10 was cheesy and cringe-worthy, which leads me to believe that this was intended for YA audiences. Also, what ever happened to Michelle’s cat? While I believe that Rex the dog ultimately survived, I really felt bad for Michelle’s cat.

The series ends with Luckman discovering wreckage from the solar shield – the returned from the dead lover of the megacorp’s CEO was able to alter the orbits of parts of the solar shield enough for the entire shield to collapse, presumably setting the Earth back on a path to warmth. With only a small percentage of the global population left alive, I guess the climate crisis was solved too although I would imagine there were quite a few nuclear meltdowns already underway. I think this was a case where “show don’t tell” didn’t apply. What are the odds of recognizable wreckage from the solar shield surviving reentry to land within a short horseback ride of Fort Huachuca? I know this ended the series with the characters having hope for the future, I think it would have been better to just mention that as years passed, the survivors noted warming temperatures as the Earth reset.

All in all, this series was five stars through the first 8-9 parts. I say this because I found the series enormously entertaining through these parts and I often found myself reading longer than planned because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. The final part, however, seemed to me to be very rushed, flat and was just too pat for my taste. This may have been because of some event in Logan Keys’ personal life – I hope all is well with her and she’s able to return to writing. The series may be intended for a YA audience which would explain the ending. Had I read this at age 13, I would think this to be one of the most exciting things ever written. I’m only dropping this to four stars (three and a half, rounded up) since I was so entertained through 80-90% of the book and because I realize that I may be too let’s say “seasoned” to appreciate the ending.

If I hadn't bought the entire series for $1, I'd be upset.

The "books" (each is shorter than a novella) start off decently, introducing characters across the US (for the most part) that are ultimately linked together over time during the environmental disaster that is caused by an attempt to curb global climate change. The attempt, of course backfires and results in extreme weather phenomena that kills most of the world's population, etc., etc.

The story is pretty standard post-apocalyptic YA fare, with nothing really making it stand out or cause me to recommend this to anyone very strongly. However, the writing and editing took a sharp turn around the sixth installment. The authors/editors (assuming anyone was actually editing this) began making a plethora of mistakes, most noticeably changing characters names and seemingly forgetting what their characters are doing. Examples are introducing Joshua, then immediately referring to him as Joseph for the rest of the story; referring to Benton as "Bentley" for several pages; misspelling Lily's names as "Lilly"; and placing two characters on a snowmobile (instead of the ATV they were using previously) in Louisiana after explicitly stating that there were none to be found (for obvious reasons).

Best guess is that the episodic nature of the series caught up to the authors around that point and they were just trying to pump out 80 pages at a time to make their deadlines.

Read all ten and enjoyed them unlike many series that I’m itching to have end. Liked most of the main characters fighting their way from different locations to a main area without realizing it where they will all come together. Let’s be honest, it’s a bit of a stretch post apocalyptic wise. While the present government is a bit crazy I highly doubt anyone will be putting up a canopy at least in my lifetime to stop global warming and ultraviolet rays only to then experience eternal winter and deadly freezing. While we haven’t proven through this pandemic that we are smart enough to control it I would hope the scientific community would have issue with the canopy idea. Anyway fiction is for enjoyment and this was enjoyable for me to read. I won’t give you a blow by blow description of characters and events as some will because frankly the author wants you to read his books not just the reviews so get to it, it’s worthy of your time.

what greed can do …..change the world

People have always been society’s biggest problem-there are good people even great ones in the world people that don’t even know how great they are( Brittany,Michelle, bob,German etc.)But as you read and most know there are people (Animals) out there just waiting for the chance to take advantage of others in so many ways, might doesn’t necessarily make right especially if used to abuse. But Sometimes sometimes there’s a plan your not aware of -bad things may happen people you love may die all for “the greater good” the life you live good, bad or ugly shape the person you become. This author weaves this story like a tapestry artfully since I laughed, cried held my breath and grieved for theses characters To me that means it’s a GREAT story ups downs goods bads love hate fantastic! Extraordinary ride

I Hope the author(s) will forgive me as I didn't review each of the ten volumes of this series The drive from one to TBE next was too compelling. Even reading the author's comment seemed a restraint from continuing the adventure.

This has truly been an extraordinary thrill ride. The characters come alive and, as situations and circumstances evolve, it's difficult to predict where the tale will lead. This kept me enthralled and hastening to find where the characters were going, next. This is the experience I always hope a book or series will provide. This series brings the reader all these things. Highs, lows, joy, sorrow, hope and disappointment abound.

If you enjoy the post-apocalyptic genre, this series is not to be missed.

I have reviewed each episode separately, so will just say that overall, this was an enjoyable story about the dangers of science and corporate greed causing apocalyptic disaster for Earth.

The cast of characters suited the tale, each developed reasonably well, if a little one-dimensional sometimes - either good or bad.

Descriptions of the cruel weather were atmospheric and scary as if a monster rather than elemental - well done.

I'm not convinced about the science, although, maybe something similar could happen? But then it is fiction based on possibilities.

Certainly worth reading.

I breezed through the whole series with relative ease and it was all very easy to follow and understand. The stories themselves were suspenseful, thrilling, and always kept you on the edge of your seat with some major event going on. The characters were pretty standard as in any adventure novel with the typical traits; hero, jerks, savior of the day, the never giver upper, children, etc. but they all still had some form of uniqueness to them that made it enjoyable. I do indeed recommend for light reading, I read primarily before bed (often a mistake because of how much suspense each chapter leaves you in). It has a little bit of something for everyone!

Roller coaster

What a ride. What thoroughly exciting read. Fantastically detailed I feel like I the characters. I count myself lucky to have enough imagination that I can visualise the story - who needs a film? The end was brilliant tinged with sadness for the characters we lost along the way, but the losses kept it real. I found myself holding my breath and having to step away - the trepidation and heartbreak was very real. Thank you both for expertise and craft. Logan, your interjections at the beginning of each book built the excitement, you delivered on all promises of each book. Keep writing…. Keep collaborating?

Extinction Event

Mankind is pushed to the brink by an ice age caused by an ill conceived plan to eliminate global warming. An amazing cast of characters battle to survive and stay ahead of a seemingly sentient killing cold. There's only a glimmer of hope that the Earth itself will survive. But a glimmer of hope is all we have sometimes when we must slay the dragon.

Excellent series and unbelievable price for the complete set on Amazon

Wow, just wow

I started the series with interest but after the first book i was hooked. I read during my breaks and lunch at work, I would read while making meals and after dinner. I couldn't put it down. I came to know each character and found myself rooting for them through each new obstacle. I cried and laughed with them. Well done, Logan and Mike. I will definitely look for more of your work.

Incredible

What an incredible read! In the beginning I wasn’t sure, it kind of drug a little and I wasn’t able to really dig into the story(line). It had me at about the 6th chapter and from there I struggled to put it down (through all ten books!!)

The story was so well written that I was able to follow the transition between different character groups with absolutely no struggle. Very, VERY well written!! Keys and Kraus should definitely collaborate again!

Epic story

This was a great read and a nice new angle on the end of the world. The characters were so engaging that I really felt for them. The reason for the “shades” was never truly explained and it was a little difficult to be sure it was for global warming but it works anyway. It was nice that there was less emphasis on how awful people could be and more on how coming and working together could overcome obstacles.

It kept me coming back for more

It's been a long time since I really hated that the book was coming to an end. It was excellent writing. The characters were great. You hated the bad guys, loved the good guys, and eventually hated loving some of the bad guys. You had it all. And the fool I am I cried at the end when Brittany found Colton. You got me hooked and that's not an easy task.

A nice story

I liked it. It was different and sad and happy. The individual books were so short that I would not have bothered to read it if it had not come out in this omnibus edition. I think it could have been much better if the authors' would have chose to have a higher word count and expanded on a lot of things in the story but it was okay and worth the time spent reading it.

Warning:may cause sleep deprvation

The Long Fall has been an engrossing read this past week. As we self isolate during the Coronavirus outbreak reading aBout what Michelle and Bob, Brittany and Chu ck, and Colton and the kids had to go through kept me reading way too late for several l nightse. The series was engrossing and the authors blended their styles well. Imagine my surprise when I realized where it would all end, about twenty kilowatts from where I live.

Fantastic Story...

I loved reading The Long Fall...not only the story of the earth in crisis, also all the characters that I loved and hated! My emotions were all over the place and I loved it! I fell in love with German and Lucky. Oh I loved them all..except for a handful I just wanted to slap! Seriously this is a beautiful tale, tragic and heartfelt! I couldn't put it down...thank you!!!

The characters are wonderful and make you want to follow the story. However, at times, the writing is a little unclear and at other times it appears to be filler. There are plenty of "cliff-hangers", but I found I wanted to focus on one-part of the storyline only for the story to jump to another one. Overall, I gave the series a 4-star rating because it is worth the read. Final thought, the books are really short and could have been combined into fewer volumes.

I love this type of fiction, however the characters were poorly drawn, the storyline too convoluted and it simply didn’t stand out enough to make it anything other than a very average post apocalyptic novel.

I thought it had real potential, so I was disappointed by my assessment.
I had just completed another standout book with a similar premise, so maybe that had set the bar high.

However, I just couldn’t recommend this series in good faith.

Really great series

I really enjoyed this apocalyptic series that Logan & Kraus put together. Had a hard time putting it down for work & sleep because I became so immersed in the storyline & couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. I fell in love with the main characters but was sad that Lucky had to lose Jean & Colton his brother. And German must be part cat cause how many lives does that man have?

Fantastic!

Great characters, whether they were heroes or villains, you wanted to know what was going to happen to them. I loved the unique plot line, very different from what I have read before. Now I have to go to bed to try to catch up on sleep, because I couldn't put this book down!

A Nice Guilty Pleasure

This is a rather long read, but is well paced and makes you want to continue until the end. A few of the plotlines are a bit obvious and the end is perhaps a little too clean, but overall was a fun read, as dystopian literature goes. Try it and you may like it.
