For 23 years, Ron Read witnessed the toughest shot in golf, the opening drive from the #1 tee of the United States Open Championship. A vantage point few have enjoyed. The US Open ranks with the World Series, the Super Bowl, and Wimbledon for its prestige and meaning to its respective sport. Each year, the world's top players come to America and compete to be the best golfer, among the toughest field, on the most unyielding golf course possible. Throughout his celebrated career, Ron formed enduring relationships with golfers, caddies, sportscasters and writers, course superintendents, and many others.
In Starting the US Open, Ron takes us inside the ropes, through clubhouse, and into the inner sanctum to bring us the stories that will reveal what has made this tournament and this sport truly special in the eyes of fans and players alike. More than a great read, Starting the US Open is a great experience. "Play Away Please!"
nice book of memories, but not a writer, per say... a line was a paragraph-very annoying... also-at one point, can't find the page #, it read like he said Bethpage Black was in Pittsburgh(not NY).. had to fit in some non-fiction before the end of the year.. error-p.118-'Denis had a en-foot putt'... would that be a TEN foot putt, maybe??? ya think? And p.209 had this - 'decision,:I didn't'... too much punctuation, not enough spaces, maybe?? am i getting too picky?-where are the freakin' editors? and why are they not doing their jobs? don't the authors read their galleys before going to print? their name is on this work, the one they spent(possibly years) writing & this gets through? geesh.
Interesting Inside Baseball look at many USGA championships over many years.
Some really good stories, anecdotes & insights on golf all over the world including back stories on several championships, with lots of US Open stories, some good rulings, a few “oh no’s”, with a cast of Who’s Who. Couldn’t put it down and sorry it’s over.
