With the addition of Gula to the party, Loren's financial woes only increase. Luckily they get a good job offer rather quickly, most likely because the other adventurers would refuse out of fear since said employer had incinerated a couple of toughs out of anger right in the middle of the guild. The job: explore some well hidden ruins.
Much like previous volumes the volume is a self-contained story with over-the-top violence. The strong point for me are the characters, whom I find rather entertaining. The plot this time is rather straight forward and the book relatively short. The ending is also not typical for earlier volumes which is a nice change of pace. As always, my biggest complaint is in how the people deal with massacres, not the characters, but public in general. I certainly hope these massacres and shows of lawlessness are just because of Loren's presence and otherwise very rare because otherwise the existence of civilization seems a bit unlikely...
Anyway, a fun entertaining short read and curious what is going on.
The main protagonist, Loren, usually ends up bedridden and in debt to his companions, and it is nice to see a change in this book. Lapis has a great personality that is brought to life brilliantly by the author in every volume, and this one is no exception. Although introduced in the previous volume, Gula is more developed in this volume, and she shines every time.
The story revolves around Tizona, a strong mercenary with a huge debt who hires Loren's party to search for ruins in order to pay it off. Along the way, they face ridiculous challenges that are both humorous and action-packed. The author's writing style is engaging, and the dialogues are well-written.
Although the party's strength is often showcased by their ability to easily overpower their enemies, the author also manages to create moments of empathy for Loren, who is constantly trying to hide the truth about Lapis and Gula. Whether you feel sorry for Loren or the poor bandits who get massacred by the party, and here Scena shines, you'll be entertained by the book's well-crafted plot and witty characters.
Overall, I highly recommend this book for fans of action and humor, and I can't wait to see where the author takes the story next.
Loren and Lapis are at it again. Only this time they are adding a new member - Gula. The dark god of gluttony has decided to hang out with them after their last adventure, so they went to enroll her as an adventurer. While there, they witnessed a party of adventurers who were attacking a read-headed girl go up in flames. Then they got a request from the Guild, accompany the flame hazard - Ms. Tizona, aka the Infernal Edge - to explore some ruins so she could find treasure to repay a huge debt she had. Sounds, easy, but of course Loren's luck runs true to form and the party ends up facing bandits, more bandits, and then even more bandits to get to the ruin to face whatever happens to be hunkered down there. So will the party survive? Prevail? Or will Loren end up back in the hospital and owe Loren even more money? A fun addition to this series!
Only the last chapter was interesting and fun. What a change from the earlier volumes! I might just have to stop reading it at this point. Not even Lapis and Loren were as much fun as they usually are. Oh, well.
I've been getting more and more invested in the story as it progresses. They do a good job of setting up the next book with the journal entries at the end.
