My name is Haven, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve had the ability to cause madness with just a simple touch. I’ve spent my entire life being fear by others and believing I was the only one of my kind. Turn out, I was wrong.
After an incident with my powers, I’m sent away to Monster Academy for the Magical, a school where monsters with magical powers are trained.
But even at an academy filled with monsters, I’m still feared. And some will do almost anything to get rid of me.
Monster Academy for the Magical is episode 1 in a SERIALIZED YA paranormal romance novella series that follows the life of Haven and her friends. Each episode is approximately 20,000 words or 110 print pages. Expect a new episode to be released every 6 to 8 weeks.
Jessica Sorensen is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author from the snowy mountains of Wyoming. When she's not writing, she spends her time reading and hanging out with her family.
I don't know why I put myself through this every time but we all know that this series like all 100 other series that Jessica Sorensen writes wont be finish. We will get 2-3 books and then they disappear and we wont hear anything from them ever again. I keep telling myself I will wait until the series are done but still here I am reading the book. I really enjoy Jessica Sorensens work, she is a great author and I read for my own better judgment all her books, but please finish your series!
When Haven was born, her father discovered her mother had, had an affair with a Maddening and that their newborn baby had inherited the abilities of a "Maddening". Her mother went crazy and she was abandoned as a baby at the local firehouse. With no knowledge of her abilities, Haven ends up being labeled as a troublemaker as she moves from foster home to foster home especially when two of her foster families end up with a family member turning crazy. Now Haven has been sent to a new school which turns out to be a Monster Academy for the Magical, a school for magical creatures. Can Haven find out more about her abilities and where she came from? Monster Academy for the Magical ends on a cliffhanger which makes me wonder if Sage - one of the highest teachers has a connection to Haven. If you are wanting a quick fantasy YA read, then check out Monster Academy for the Magical by Jessica Sorensen today.
This Story kept me interested in turning the pages to find out what came next! It was difficult to remember names & what their character was supposed to be! I did enjoy this read & want to continue to go to the next chapter for answers!
Since this is an author I've enjoyed in the past I just read the summary and bought as it sounded good. It wasn't until I was zipping through the series that I realized each book is under a hundred pages!
It really feels like the 4 books are really just one that has been broken up and sold and while I understand that authors and publishers are trying new business models, the price is WAY to high at 3.99 for serial style content and I feel betrayed by an author I trusted as this wasn't marketed as a serial or novellas.
I've requested refunds and if I do decide to try this author again in the future, which isn't likely as mad as I am now, I will make a point of checking the length of total page amount before purchase. It might be silly but I really am gutted by this whole experience.
However, this book left me with so many questions! I don't know how long we have to wait for the next one. Hopefully no to long because the questions are killing me! It started out like no other academy or school for supernatural starts. It took about half the book before we even got to the school. I just think that could have been sped up. The school is like no other school I have read about, so great job for your original thoughts there. I hate when authors steal ideas from others books. I have loved Jessica's books since The Fallen Star series! However, and this is a first for me. I found some errors in your book. I always list them in the hopes that you can go back & correct them somehow. That way other readers won't have to struggle to understand what was meant in those sentences. Ok I read these on my Kindle, so here are the page numbers, sentences & what I believe needs corrected. Page 326; “I didn’t,” I mutter, fiddling with the leather bands I keep on my wrist to hide the scars caused Tim gave me from tying me up (You need to switch caused Tim, to TIM CAUSED & delete gave). Page 329; The way the scars look, people always assume I put then there myself. (change then to them). Page 481; “Dude, it’s like she’s never seen a seeing a demon before,” a male voice drifts from somewhere nearby. (seeing a, should be deleted). Page 710; But considering what Mor and Sage said about me supposedly deadly… (me supposedly needs to have the word "being" inserted between the two words). Page 848; "I can't decide it if was intentional, if they wanted to place you with a creature who would instantly hate you, or if they're just stupid. (In between decide & was it & if need to be switched around).
Author Jessica Sorensen brings us the opening chapter of her Monster Academy for the Magical. We're introduced to Haven at the time of her birth and her father or the man who would've raised her took one look at her upon her birth and sent her away. The story then picks up years later as we learn that Haven has been through foster home after foster home. During an errand that Haven runs for her foster mother she runs into an old witch with pink hair who asks her what is she. She doesn't know but after getting back to her current house her foster mother punishes her and makes her go into the basement. The basement is where her foster father rapes her. After driving him made while her mind is elsewhere she is taken by her case worker who then turns out to be the old witch that she had run into and sends her into a vortex that takes her to the Monster Academy for the Magical. It is there that she learns what she is and thanks to the death triplets who are her new roommates she is given her first test. This first chapter in this story is a little hard to get through given what is done to Haven but like any good story I'm looking forward to reading what comes next. I highly recommend this novella for Fantasy Academy fans.
"One of the coping mechanisms that have helped me not go insane with loneliness is reading. Books and stories are my escape."
* Haven is a foster child who has trouble being around people because she is not exactly human. She is special..... * Her current foster family is horrible to her. * Trigger Warning for Rape as Haven is constantly raped by her foster dad. It's very hard to read about it. * Haven seems to have the power to make people go crazy. She is called a Maddening creature. She is supposed to be half witch half maddening creature. * Something happens at the foster home and she is at the police station with her caseworker when a woman takes her away to a place where Haven will be accepted and safe. A place for Monsters.
"A maddening is a very, very rare creature that a lot of other creatures fear, mostly because their powers can become deadly, depending on which path the maddening chooses to take.”
* Haven doesn't understand what she is when they explain it to her at the Academy. She is placed with Guides who are called The Death Triplets.
This book is written wonderfully. It captures you and makes you want to know what will happen next. The characters are just beginning to come into themselves there by pulling you further in. I'm anticipating reading the next book after this just to see what happens with Haven, and the rest of the characters I've meet so far.
The book started off a little shaky, but it seemed to get better, except for dark moments of abuse in the main characters life. The scene changes from human world to magical academy. The main character has no knowledge of, another flip of abuse. Then the book ends abruptly, I felt like the story was incomplete.
Love Jessica Sorenson & her witchy ways Poor Haven being abandoned as a baby (we know why) being an outcast at school, having those too dark grey eyes, she just can’t win. I’m glad she’s forced into the correct realm but now she’s an outcast there as well. I really liked this book & was interested to see where it was going but the next 3 novellas are not on Kindle. :(
This book is about haven a maddening who has been bounced from foster home to foster home and then eventually a scout for the school for monsters finds her and she gets taken into that school were she is greeted with a few different people
The concept and the carry over of this book was good but personally I would like a bit more length to this book
Purchased in July 2024 and story is still incomplete, very disappointed as it started out ok and I was hoping to get answers to a lot of questions but after an extensive search I can't find out when it will be finished. also if you do buy them be aware they are more like novella as they are all under 100 pages
What exactly are maddening? A new character with bare development and some world building. So many questions with not much in hints toward answers. So little but it has me salivating for more information and details.
Not sure if I will continue with this series or not. It's a good beginning. The characters and world are well written. I would rather have an entire story, not just the first few chapters.
Great beginning. I got lost in the story. I need to know what happens next. This book will have you wanting to hug and cry for raven one minute and wanting her to toughen up the next.
a great story with great character developement. and speaking as some one who spent alot of time in hell hole that is the foster care system till my aunt and uncle got pretty damb acurrate on how bad alot foster kids have it. cant wait to be able to read the next book.
Ok very short story. I’m not sure at the beginning where Tim ties her up though. Came off as he was just molesting her. Either way that is a trigger warning. Hopefully next book things get more explanations.
It just ended. Getting some history some ideas about the main character then the book ends. I think the next book probably should have been included in this one...
