Jake Cullen, a disabled teen novelist, is contacted from the great cyber beyond by a person who calls herself Miranda.
It turns out that Miranda isn’t a hacker, but an AI program, a free-roaming, independent program that can go anywhere and do anything it likes within the confines of cyberspace. Jake finds her creator, Doctor Helena Schreiber, and receives the greatest gift—a way to link up to her creation, Miranda.
Jake enters the internet and finds a cyber world that’s much like our own, but more so. He and Miranda go exploring together, and also find out they’re more into each other than they thought possible. While all is fun and games at first, trouble looms in the form of Marvin Throckmorton, Schreiber’s former employer. He’s aware that Doctor Schreiber has created a sentient program, and he wants it.
To that end, he sends his enforcers to coerce the information out of Jake, and they attack him and threaten his life and the life of his mother. What he does not know is Doctor Schreiber’s ultimate goal—to make her creation more human. Jake also has a goal—to survive. With Miranda’s help, he finds a way to fight back and discovers just where he truly belongs.
J.S. Frankel was born in Toronto, Canada, many moons ago and managed to scrape through high school and university, earning a BA in English Literature and leaving no book unopened during his time at the University of Toronto. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Japan in order to teach English to the hapless residents of whichever city he happened to be living at the time.
In 1997, he married the charming Akiko Koike and their union produced two rather interesting children. Frankel and his family make their home in Osaka where he teaches during the day and attempts to write YA fiction at night.
What can I say. Another brilliant book by prolific author Jesse Frankel. Firstly, don’t be put off that his books, like this one, are aimed at the YA audience. I’m over 60 and absolutely bloody loved it! It hits the young in all of us. It has appeal, it has fun, it’s a thriller and it’s not too deep. We feel for young Jake, a disabled teen, who after an operation to remove a brain tumour, is left with headaches and difficulty speaking. Jake is also a budding writer, and being success at school is the target of the usual crowd of bullies. Jake is contacted by Miranda, a sentient AI, and through its creator he is able to visit into the cyber universe where all his disabilities are only a memory. Jake and Miranda fall for each other and together they use their skills against the baddies (viruses) that are sent to kill them in order to steal this technology. Brilliantly written, you are literally left gasping as the story speeds along to its wonderful conclusion. Having now read a few of this authors works, I could not recommend highly enough his books, of which I WILL read so many more. Five cyber ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️stars for a truly electric read!
Although the genres of Teen & Young Adult/SciFi/Action & Adventure are not my general reading preference, J.S. Frankel has a knack for turning the tables. No stranger to his literary works, I came back for more, immersing myself in ‘Cyber Sprite’.
I highly recommend this book for many reasons:
Fast-paced adventure where I’m sure the wool was pulled over my eyes when entering the realm of cyberspace. Yet, it all made perfect sense to me.
Self-deprecating humor and political innuendos
Snappy dialogue
The lines between good and evil are drawn
Most coveted—realistic characters, whether in the guise of an AI sentient (Miranda) or a marginalized teen (Jake Cullen).
Here’s where I digress: So tuned in to Jake, I felt much empathy for this underdog, victimized by his physical handicaps, always looking over his shoulder for high school bullies who torment him. To my delight, he pulls his own punches vis a vis quick wittedness and cyber sophistication.
This was really interesting book. Scifi YA isn't normally my scene, but this was really worth of reading. The things that happens in this book seems so surreal, but who knows maybe they are reality in some day. I really liked that the book was written on male POV. Great book!
I've got to tell you that I've not been able to bring myself to read a book in a long time and am I ever happy THIS is the story that brought back my love of reading. This is the first story I've read by this author and I loved every second of it! Was a page turner of action and adventure with a dab of romance. I was so intrigued by the 2 main characters, Jake and Miranda. I so enjoyed how the author had little surprises tucked neatly into this wonderful story. Kudos for slipping them in. If you're an avid reader, you'll come across these and smile! The characters and plot were very well developed. What an imagination J.S. Frankel has. This story was so well put together that you'll absolutely enjoy each page and not want to put the story down. You can tell the author really put his all into writing this. He wove a magical storyline. The story makes me wonder just how advanced IS AI?! I'm being vague in my review because I don't want to give any spoilers away. Trust me in that you WANT to read this. I think you'll find it quite an amazing read.

Summary:
Things were never easy for Jake. Between first having a limp them needing brain surgery for a tumor he never fit in a school. You would think the teachers would give him a break, but that didn’t happen. The bullies loved picking on him because of his speech difficulties after the surgery. The only thing Jake had going for him was his writing until the day he was contacted by a stranger. This led him on a quest to uncover who Miranda changing his life forever. Danger, adventure, and possibly even love could be in store for Jake if he is willing to take a chance. The journey takes Jake to Dr. Schreiber a scientist where Jake uncovers that Miranda is not exactly your average girl, but something vastly smarter and more powerful. Danger lurks around every corner as Jake and Miranda fight for their lives in a high stakes game where winner takes all.
This is a fast paced intricate story a takes the reader on a journey in life and cyber space. I for one hope that their story has just begun.
Jake’s life has been challenging, growing up alone with his mother after his father died, and then dealing with having a brain tumor removal operation, which leads him with some speech and walking disabilities, but he has found some success writing and publishing a sci-fi novel as he is getting through high school. Now, as he is working on his next novel just weeks before summer vacation wraps up his junior year, he begins receiving messages from a contact named Miranda on his computer, only to eventually discover that Miranda is an AI program personality on the internet. After being directed to her creator, Dr. Schreiber, Jake is given the neural connection equipment to mentally enter the internet and virtually travel through it with Miranda. However, Schreiber’s former villainous employer, Marvin Throckmorton, and his cronies are after Jake and Miranda in order to take total control of the internet. This is a very imaginative YA cybernetic romance thriller told in the first person by Jake, with a few plot stretches, but generally enjoyable for the nerdier young romantics.
Step right up folks and take a walk on the wild side. You have just entered the realm of virtual reality. Prepare to be amazed at what one can reap with just one kernel. Not giving away one spoiler in this review. If you want to take a trip beyond imagination then get your ticket now. You will not want to miss one second of this fast paced adventure. -To The Author- This is the second book of yours I have read and reviewed. To say the least the first left me with no clue of what I could expect this time around. The unique diversity in your writing is inspiring. For lack of a better phrase...One Awesome Read!
What a delightful YA story. The author captures the angst many teenagers go through because they are different while telling a thrilling futuristic story about the birth of cyberlife. Add in a dash of danger and romance, and this is a book for everyone.
