Shiny Blades. Scorching Fire. Falling Feathers. A demon army is rising... An anomaly must bring it down. But can she handle a drunk, knife-wielding goat and four hunters? That’s me, Everly Banks, the original supernatural. After being betrayed by The Council and given to a madman, I burned it all to the ground. Now all I want is to stay hidden, protecting those who need it from the shadows. When four hunters show up on my doorstep asking for my help and trying to drag me back into the light, I send them and their secrets packing. Did I mention they work for The Council? I may not have a choice. An army of demons is amassing and innocents are getting caught up in its net. My only friend may be next. Trusting them may burn me, but I’ve always played with fire. ********* Twisted Flames is an Urban Fantasy with a Reverse Harem romance. One ancient woman, four hot men, and one drunk sidekick battle demons and themselves. This series includes sexual content, mature language, and violence. It is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18. Alludes to rape, but no details are given. It may not be suitable for everyone.
God, I hate immature immortals. Why authors want to write about characters that have been alive forever but present them like they are 13 year olds is beyond me. This is a second book I read this month with an FMC who just doesn’t act or sound her age. The other one was Immortal Beloved which also took all my will power to finish. Now comes Everly, who is literally as old as creation but talks and behaves like a spoilt petulant child.
“I was far older than her and she tried to mother me every chance she got... The only thing that I knew was I have always been. I don't remember coming into existence, just suddenly being, suddenly waking on Earth long before man began. A person, or whatever the hell I was, could get very lonely with nothing but giant plants and animals to talk to when they even existed.”
This is one of her internal outbursts after her best friend tried to show some concern. The book is full of her throwing similar tantrums or disappearing into thin air if anyone said something she doesn’t like or even looked at her the wrong way. It was just too much! Maybe the loneliness of talking to plants and animals stunted her brain development. Aeons going on 13, that’s our FMC.
There’s also the fact that the whole story itself is presented in the same irritating juvenile tone that I found unbearable. The whole reading experience was totally cringe worthy and just rubbed me the wrong way. The difference between the two books is that where in the Immortal Beloved, only the FMC acted and talked childishly, with this book it’s the FMC and the writing style that sounds like a pre-pubescent girl trying to be sassy.
Additional star for a cool concept, if only it was delivered differently. But I guess if one doesn’t mind a book that reads like a twelve year old trying but failing to be or sound sassy and badass, this is might be a good story. There’s no way I am reading the next book.
I’m not sure I’ve ever wanted to know what type of supernatural a FMC was more than I wanted to know which one this one would be. It was driving me crazy not knowing... and I was I see that, in the end, I might have been shooting way to low with my guesses.
I really liked the intrigue here as well as the fact that the FMC was way bad A and I’m actually kind of excited to see how things play out for this series. That all being said, I did feel like it was super hard to connect with the FMC, her personality in general was really standoffish adding to the intrigue but making it hard for the reader to connect. I feel like the author kind of did this on purpose and for the most part it made sense to me, but doesn’t change the fact that I wish we had clicked a little more. I feel like with the guys, even being in their viewpoints sometimes we still don’t know them either... I can’t tell yet if they are flat or if we just aren’t far enough along in the story to really have gotten to know them yet.
I wish I knew more about where the heck this plot is headed. We have had some major bombs dropped on us in the very last chapter here and I just have no clue what endgame might hold! I guess I’ll just have to wait and see!
The writing is a little ... repetitive/amateur. The characters are often just overblown with the yelling and the snark, in a way that's way over the top. Plus, we're told early on that Everly has been around since, like, the beginning of the world. And yet she acts like a bitchy 14 year old.
And after the lead-up, when it comes to the fight at the end this supposed badass was just TSTL. Easily captured, decided to play along with it and lets herself get tied to the chair ... it was some serious damseling and I was surprised by it.
Wow, I was in a book slump and had troubles reading a couple of books. But this one was not a problem! It was a fun read with a lot of funny moments, it has a lot of action. Will read it again and cannot wait for the next book
Between the MC's propensity for calling people and things the most asinine, ridiculous, and fucking juvenile names, AND the author's propensity for including band names and song titles in the writing, I just couldn't with this one. We are given the band names and song titles to no less than like 10 different songs within the first few chapters because the MC was either dancing to it, running to it, or generally just fucking listening to it, and that, ladies and gents, is just too.fucking.much. Also, after reading the MC refer to people and things over and over again as "asshat", "jizz stain", "cum guzzling butt nuggets" and "gerbil fucking, lumpy tater titty having anus elves", well...I was just done.
So much potential, so much for me to like, and yet I just wasn't connecting to anything! This is one I might need to trying again in the future-- maybe I was just in a weird headspace??
I really like the MFC and the quips in her dialogue but I have to say, Willy the talking goat really made the book for me. The way his character is written is fantastic, you can literally picture his antics!
This book just didn’t do it for me. The juvenile tone set by the main character grated after a while. I liked that it’s a slow burn, but there was little to go off of to get me excited for book two. I felt zero investment in the story and characters. Wanted to like it but will pass on reading the next one.
Everly (the main character in this book) has been living under the radar of everyone for a long time especially from The Council a shady institution that has its sights set on her. For what purpose she doesnt know yet. Shes just started to settling down in place she starts to feel at home in with friends and people she helping out. This is beginning to feel like a home to her. That is until a chance encounter with some Demons turns her life on its head & in pop four hot men. Dixin, Rendell, Torin and Kohana. They need her help. Can trust them though? Thats to be seen. As well as them she has what can only be described as a spirit guide in William aka Little Willy. Hes a foul-mouthed, wise-cracking, drinking, smoking, farting, talking goat & he is an absolute riot. He had me laughing out loud all the way through this book. So funny! In fact the book in general has loads of funny parts and a few sexy ones too. Which you'd expect with four hot men. Blimey this is great book. Loved it from start to finish
What a fantastic debut! This book smacks you across the face and demands you pay attention, weaving a complex story that is literally billions of years in the making. Who is Everly? WHAT is Everly? No one really knows, but everyone wants to.
Pros: - incredibly complex. - Well written. - Love, Love, Love Everly! - The mystery is captivating. - Such a delightful slow burn and slow build that will probably shock ALL of them when it comes to fruition.
Cons: - A bit disjointed in the beginning. Reason 1/2 star is lost.
This is an amazing debut from a talented new author who swept me of my feet with her fantastic writing, great plot, lovable and adorable characters, properly sinister villains and an interesting world she created. And tons of action and sizzling chemistry between the main character and her accidental companions, as well as funny and occasionally sarcastic dialogues, and internal monologues. The author's writing in beautifully consistent and well paced. Her characters are wonderfully gradually developed, the reader gets to know them like they would a friend. The alternating, multiple point of view adds to that feeling of familiarity. The inter-character dynamic is quite amazing as well. Everly has a different relationship with each of the guys, and they have different relationships with each other as well. It is all beautifully realistic. Everly is an immortal of undetermined origin, exceptionally powerful, but not completely aware of her origins or the origins of her power. She is compassionate and uses her immense power to help those in need. Several hundred years ago, she has been through a very hard time that left her scared and having issues trusting people, however Dixin finds a way to break down her walls, Kohana, Rendell and Torin soon get under her skin as well. The guys are pretty amazing, not all of them immediately lovable, but definitely get under your skin. Their partnership is quite accidental initially but the circumstances continue keeping them together. There is a lot of chemistry, but the romance is not the focus, staying alive, free and fighting bad guys is. There is a cliffhanger in the end, so consider yourself warned. But wow what an epic ending that was! I loved loved this book and I can't wait to read the next one, or whatever the author writes next.
I didn't find this one to be particularly well-written or compelling. The main character is inconsistent - she has trouble being touched (i.e., she will cut a bitch for touching her without permission) stemming from past abuse that appears and disappears as is convenient for the author. One example,
We also have a best friend (that spends almost no time in the book) who is supposed to be fiercely loyal, but apparently has no problem giving away Everly's secrets to a bunch of men she has never met before. I also guessed what Everly was fairly early in the book - - so I didn't find the mystery aspect of the book all that compelling. It was also fairly obvious who the big bad was going to be and that it would be a plot to draw her out of hiding - although why that was necessary since they apparently knew exactly where she was made absolutely no sense to me.
Another thing about this book that drove me absolutely up the wall was the constant references to musical tracks in the first portion of the book. Thankfully the author apparently got bored with that as the book went on, but it was so jarring and added nothing to the plot. This plot device does not actually humanize characters; it just feels like padding to make a book longer. When I want to be immersed with details in a story, I want to be able to picture a scene - and that does include sound - but that doesn't mean giving me the soundtrack like I'm watching a movie. That means painting the scene of feet slapping against pavement as she's running, staccato breaths puffing out as she pushes extra hard during a sprint, hearing a dog whining to be let in as she speeds by a home, etc. Those types of details paint a picture - not what she has playing on her iPod.
I don't feel like I know the guys at all, and I certainly don't feel like I've grown to like any of the characters. I'm just not invested. The only character I like is the goat. I don't feel compelled to figure out what's going to happen in the next books, even though it's clear the goat is lying about something.
Twisted flames grabbed me and didn’t let go first book from Aster North and definitely not the last one I will be reading. Very happy the next one is out as it ends on a cliffhanger haha
The story has some interesting elements but there is quite a lot of inner dialog that was slowing this book down for me. I'm interested enough that I will check out book two and I'll hope that the pace picks up and the dialog is more limited.
Congratulations on your debut novel Aster - you have seriously blown the water out of the park.
I just wanted to quickly say how I came across this book... Okay so, I saw the cover for book 2 in a cover contest and loved it. I searched for the book and saw that my friends had reviewed them 5 stars. Then went onto our beta chat and asked them what they thought and it was all raving reviews from them. I am so happy that we have social media because otherwise I would have missed out on this awesome series!
Okay now the actual review lol.
The writing style in this book is really engaging. I love how little bits of info are dropped here and there and the reader has to connect the dots. And I was thrilled when I did connect said dots and the secrets were unfolded, holy moly it was good.
The FMC is a complete badass and I haven't been able to say that for a lot of them recently, so this was just awesome to read about a super powerful women be so caring about the underdogs, helping everytime she could without wanting anything back (this is a true badass), all the while be hot af decked out in leather and a minimum of 35 knifes/swords on her person.
The actual storyline is really in-depth and creative and not giving too many spoilers away, the FMC is basically the most powerful person on the planet, who has lived eons and has been subjected to some really terrible things in her past. I can't get over how Aster has woven this story, it's just completely compelling.
Love, love, love it and you all need to read this book.
This book had much potential, it just sort of fizzled out here and there. Everly was a bit of an enigma. She was a bag on contradictions really- badass and aloof but caring and vulnerable. The action came in waves but then you'd have bouts of nothing happening and just them eating. One of the big negatives for this book was the characters development for the male leads. They acted more like supporting characters and were basically boring. The chemistry was just not there for me minus the shower scene. Even that was completely left field though. Everything was just physical and shallow. You barely understood their personalities. The other negative was the predictability of the plot. Nothing truly surprised me. Overall a nice fluff read, but could be something epic if given more depth to the characters and world building.
Welcome Aster North with her debut book! I love when there is a kick ass MC with a potty mouth that I can relate to and her stabby goat sidekick! You will love Everly but you will flove Willy! The storyline will pull you in and the hot men will turn up the heat! There is humor, suspense, action and a lot of sexual tension in this book. I can’t wait to get a hold of book two.
I’d seen this book promoted in a couple of the Facebook groups I’m a member of and after reading the blurb decided to give it a whirl. I’m so glad I did, it is a fantastic book.
The story is a little different from your normal Urban Fantasy. The MFC, Everly, is ageless and has watched epochs pass with no idea who she is and where she came from. Most of her life has been spent alone and when she finally let herself trust 400 years ago, that trust was betrayed and she was captured and tortured. After finally winning her freedom she resolved never to allow anyone close to her again. It is only in the last few years that she has started to make a few friends again, putting down roots in her community.
Everly’s best friend is a witch and we don’t see much of her in the book, which is a shame in my opinion, just the affect she has had on Everly’s life. Cassie has helped Everly soften the walls around her heart and helped bring her into the world a little. Despite her mistrust of others Everly spends a lot of time helping others and she has a soft heart beneath her armour.
When Everly is trying to find out why lots of demons are disappearing in her town she comes into contact with four supernatural guys who work for the Council; Dixin, Torin, Randell and Kohanna. She loathes the Council as they were part of her betrayal and as supernaturals are long lived some of those that betrayed her may still be in power. She reluctantly lets the men join in her quest to find out what is happening with the demons but she is torn in two as she mistrusts them but longs for their company and friendship.
There are sexually charged instances in the book with multiple men but whilst there is potential for a reverse harem, it’s not quite there yet, given the lack of trust Everly has.
There is lots of twisty turny plot strands that I always enjoy. There is much to uncover about the people controlling the disappearing demons, then there is back stories of the four men and Everly’s powers and history are a big unravelling ball of yarn.
There is so much to love about this book, Everly the damaged, lonely and powerful being with so much heart, the four men who are drawn to her and the dangers they all face.
I really can’t wait for the second book in the series, because whilst there is a nice pause at the end of the book, there is soooooo much more left to discover!
***I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.***
So Twisted Flames is the perfect name for this book. Everly Banks is the main character who is strong, determined to not repeat her mistakes, and hilariously foul mouthed. She is different from other paranormal and has lived a long time. She does have a dark last one that she is determined not to let it rule her life. Due to her past she does not invest emotionally with anyone. She still has a heart and will help anyone. Then, Kohana, Torin, Dixin, Rendell show up cause they need her help. Every doesn't play well with others. These four men are pretty hot and she can tell that they are powerful as well. Well the guys don't know that Everly has been dealing with the baddies lately. Can Everly work past her inner demons? Will she help the guys?
Overall, I loved this book. There are some parts that discuss her past but it's not in detail. I love the fact this Everly is foul mouthed, can hold her own and willing to help someone in need. The story just flowed and the characters were amazing. You cannot help but get emotionally invested in this book. I cannot wait for book 2.
Everly was awesome and badass although the amount and usage of cuss words made the first half of the book hard to understand. And man did she have mood swings and that made it harder for me to read because I thought I kept missing something and had to go back and reread it.
The boys were...well boys. They were okay but what really didn't work for me was that they say they are brothers but they sure didn't act like it. They were always blaming each other or yelling. I also didn't feel as though they were more than two dimensional. Yes we got insights from the sections from each guys POV but they never went really in depth. I still have no idea why Everly even likes them besides their looks or why they like her too.
But the plot...now this is where the book excelled. It kept me entertained even though I had no idea what the hell was going on.
Overall as a first book by this author i thought it was good. I just hope the writer grows more as I continue and read the next one.
This debut novel is full of mystery. From the very beginning when we are introduced to Everly even she doesn't know quite what she is or how she came to be. She has been many things over her life times ( animals included). But when 4 guys come crashing into her life and they work for the council who she doesn't trust can she work with them to save the lives of others. They say you should keep your enemeies close 😈
I love the way that the characters in this book are written. The FMC has her trust issues and is very independent, the guys all have very distinct personalities that sets them apart from each other. And Willy....what can I say about him...he's a goat with a knife who is not afraid to use it.
Bad a** character with her issues, a talking goat (who your going to love and is going to have you cracking up), and 4 hot guys...you should be reading this book!
***I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*** This is an amazing debut from a talented new author who swept me of my feet with her fantastic writing, great plot, and amazing characters. There is a ton of action and hot chemistry between the main character and her men. The author's characters are wonderfully developed. There is a lot of chemistry between the characters. Warning: This is a cliffhanger! I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I instantly fell in love with Everly. Such a fucking badass!!!!She’s a protector through and through. She does what she needs to do and doesn’t mind killing a few baddies along the way. Her arc is going to be epic, I just know it! The guys have wiggled their way into my heart as well. Don’t ask me to choose one, I just can’t!! The perfect little soldiers until they meet Everly and she throat punches them and sweeps them off their feet (almost literally). And their animals are totally freaking awesome!! I want more of them, right now!!! And Willy!!! Oh my gosh, that little, baby goat had me cracking up the whole time! Not one to be left out of a good fight, that stabby little, floppy eared fucker is one I hold a soft spot for. We all need a little more Willy in our lives!!
First book? Really? You couldn't tell, for sure! Great plot, with unexpected twists, and well written character growth. Everly is really relatable, however she must be older than the average woman, still she faces with really similar issues like we do... And suddenly what looks like an innocent flirt, turns out to be a lot of trouble :) well literally and figuratively as well. The guys are sometimes loveable, sometimes "beatable", sometimes both in the same time :D Even one of the 'evil' figures are really well worked out, so yes, I almost pitied him for his situation, and the other guys - still hasn't shown his full glory, but already has details based on he has to be met. This is a slow burn story, but when it burns, it burns really hot :) practically melting. Soooo if I were you, I would read this. And yup, cannot wait to figure out what happens next!
This is a great start to a debut series from Aster North.
Everly is a kick arse heroine with a unique and hilarious potty mouth. Add to that her little Willy, the talking, whiskey loving, baby goat sidekick and you have a recipe for success. This is all before you begin to talk about the guys!
Everly, is something more, but nobody seems to know exactly what. She is ancient and spent most of her long life alone. Everly, trusts no one following a betrayal from The Council, the very people meant to protect her. Enter the vastly different guys of the story; Dixin, Torin, Ren and Ko, but all super hot!! The arrival of the guys has Everly questioning, well, everything!
I absolutely love Aster’s writing style and the editing is very good. I am excited to read book 2 and discover more of Everly’s secrets and watch the developing relationship between her and the guys. I’m also keen to discover Willy, the talking goat’s, secrets 😉
This is a difficult one to rate. I absolutely hated Everly for the first half of the book. She's mean, completely closed off, and intentionally abrasive. At a bit past the halfway mark she we get a little od her past and she starts to be more sympathetic. By the end, I liked her for the most part. Though certain things about her personality still bothered me. I liked the guys a lot and I wish there were more chapter from their POVs.
This whole idea of the original supernatural is interesting. But we don't get much of that until the very end. Most of the book is Everly being mean to the guys and not giving them a chance to explain themselves. There are a few action scenes but it mostly planning and bits about the goat's antics. I do think I'll read the next one since it's already out, but if Everly doesn't become a bit nicer I may stop there.
Strong, unapologetic FMC - we need more of these! Everly is easily one of the best new on the scene FMCs I've read in a very, very long time. She is strong and resilient, coursing with magic. She is ancient and therefore has a lot of wisdom about life, love and killing things that need to be killed. She and her magic are unique, but girl still packs swords and Glocks - what better combo is there?! And she calls things out as she sees them. I am being sincere when I say that I am impressed with is probably some of the most inventive curse word and name calling I've ever had the pleasure to read. New words and phrases definitely going into use just as soon as it's called for. And let's face it, those of us not magically or weaponry gifted only have our wits and our mouths to live by. Cannot wait to delve into book two of the series. How is this not more highly rated?!
I liked this for the most part. The characters were okay. Everly has a lot of issues and such a massive history to pull from, but hardly any of it is touched on. The guys might be paranormal, but they are pretty one dimensional. And even though Cassie was fun, she’s hardly in the story (although I love her introduction to little Willy🤣). Speaking of Little Willy, he was a scream. Such a unique character that I loved to see. Hope there’s more of him in future books.
The mystery itself was pretty generic, and the Council seems more bark than bite. World building was pretty good, considering, and I enjoyed Everly’s crow interactions.
