The Black Library debut for Nicholas Wolf, this explores a little of what might happen if an Astra Militarum regiment forsook its oaths to the Emperor, and where that might lead.

It’s an interesting premise, and while it perhaps takes the easy road by leaning into the obvious progression for its characters there’s a certain satisfaction in watching its protagonist change and struggle to reconcile his beliefs with what’s happening to him. As a debut it definitely nails the 40k tone, and makes for an solid (if not groundbreaking) standalone story.

Reborn feels somewhat unique to me, largely because the whole "fall to Chaos" trope we see in 40K is almost always from the perspective of the Space Marines, so seeing it from a "mortal" perspective felt really fresh and personal. The action and horror elements are well done, and the pacing is generally good, it just feels like it should have been longer to flesh out more of Petrov's descent. Overall a very enjoyable read, would definitely recommend.
