A celebration of the virtuoso of well-turned phrases and the master of the studied insult with this collection of his most acerbic quips. No playwright apart from Shakespeare is as widely quoted and Oscar Wilde's needlesharp rejoinders are often repeated with delight. However, his jibes were rarely cruel, and displayed a profound understanding of the human character and its vanities. Includes such notable quotes 'Work is the curse of the drinking classes.' 'All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his.' The Importance of Being Earnest 'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.' Lady Windermere's Fan With a timeline of his life and quotations divided by themes, this book demonstrates why, more than a hundred years after his death, people are still drawn to Wilde's dazzling repartee and the wicked brilliance of his social observations.
Some pithy quotes, and a nice background on Wilde. Well-organized, and with ample spacing for a book of this type.
More than anything, I was struck with Wilde’s cynicism and negativity in regards to the world and how best to live life. On the one hand, this may have been purely satire through his characters, though many of the quotes seem to have been taken from his Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young.
Terrible. I bought in store and it doesn’t say these are quotes so I got it thinking each book had a story. IF ITS A BOOK OF QUOTES PUT THAT SOMEWHERE SO PEOPLE KNOW!!! NONE of the quotes are actually GOOD!!! They make no sense out of context. It was a WASTE of money to buy this. These 3 people who made the book set are making money off RANDOMLY picked quotes of famous writers who are deceased. Lazy and disgusting..
