Not simply due to the scarcity and resultant price tag, this is one for die hard Denton Welch fans only. Adeney’s barely fictionalised account of her friendship with Denton in the final years of his life is fascinating, and not always flattering, either to Denton, or herself, or Eric Oliver, who appears here as ‘Gina.’ No surprise to fans, I think. Denton’s supreme gift was to illuminate his small, brief pocket of experience with exquisite piquancy, yet Adeney is still able to add to his material with her own account and there are some well rendered descriptions which really bring that specific time and place to life.
