This isn't my typical read, I prefer first person over third when reading. I like to be in the story not told a story, BUT the story concept was good. I liked the characters and the way the author portrays them. I feel like the story was a bit rushed, I would have love to see more build up of when Patch was training, or maybe have a different POV from the children or Bekka, who were stolen. Overall it kept my interest and had me turning the pages.

This is a self-published work on Amazon that I think is intended to be a series. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. All the elements of excellent storytelling are in this book; it's engaging, the plot is innovative, and the language is beautiful. If the author is able to find a good editor, future works will likely get 5 stars from me.

I have rated this book honestly just like every other book I read, but because I was requested to review this book I will try to give a bit more of an insight on why I have gave this rating. The main reason is I feel like this book is missing so much and it can be developed into a greater book if only the author had a better editor/proof reader/beta reader. Please don’t kill me if your one of those people it’s just what I feel.

I will start with the main characters, Patch and Ctain. I feel like we are missing so much about their background who they really ended up been stepbrothers, their true feelings towards each other growing up and their activities together. We were just thrown into their relationship and then all of a sudden they are great enemies. I just feel like we are missing something maybe that’s just me. It’s like Patch and Becka’s relationship as far as I was aware they were just friends, they get reunited and then they’re having sex. Like I’m so confused. I understand where the author wants to go with these relationships but I feel like there’s a huge chunk of the bunk missing and this could easily be filled by developing these relationships. Even if it’s stupid mundane tasks like dealing with the farms together or playing in fields or chasing animals. It would also be nice to see more of the relationship between the grandad and patch.

Now on to the actual story, at the beginning I really didn’t feel like it was flowing that well and it was like a stop start journey, with no smoothness to it. Scenes kept changing and so did the feelings between the characters. There seems to also be a few problems with the story or at least areas where it can be developed, for instance when patch is recovering and the sorrow man is in the room that he shares with Ctain but with patch screaming it doesn’t wake Ctain up so he can see the sorrow man but it fetches his grandad. Another thing is that Patch trains with the sorrow man for 2/3 years. It only seemed like it was weeks at most. I felt we could have went into more detail about the training. We could have also followed Ctains point of view or even Becka since both of them were with the king. We could have seem what life was like for them after this whole disaster with Dwerry.

I did actually really enjoy the concept of this story and I understand what the author was trying to get across but the parts that I have mentioned are the parts that let it down in my eyes.

I do like the characters within the book but I would just like the friendships to merge together so I can get a better feel for the book. I feel like the reason I’ve truly gave this rating is because I can see the potential and I have hopes that the author gets far.

I was sent a copy for review of Sorrow Patch by Zion Blue.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
Sorrow Patch is about a young boy called Patch who sees a mythical creature called the Sorrow Man one day while out playing with his adoptive brother, Ctain. He falls from a tree in fear and ends up hurting himself. When he explains what happened no one in his village believes what he saw, especially Ctain. Tensions rise when his chores are given to Ctain while he heals from his injuries and hidden resentments rise to the surface.
Meanwhile the evil King sends his soldiers to round up local children as he has suffered the loss his own. Ctain, after fighting with both Patch and their grandfather, helps the soldiers and the entire adult population of the village is slaughtered while protecting their children. Patch manages to escape and is taken in by none other than the Sorrow Man himself who trains him to use his newly developed magical powers and teaches him to fight. Patch swears to take revenge on Ctain and the King for what they have done.
I give this Novella 🌟🌟.5 overall. It is very short and seems to be setting up the beginning of a series. I felt that story was rushed, that not enough attention was given to character development and story arc. There is an interesting and unique premise surrounding the mythology of the Sorrow Man and how he came to be and I would have liked more time spent on that aspect. I think this story would greatly benefit from a stronger editing process and a more in-depth backstory as it seemed to jump too quickly from one scene to the next without much explanation or context. The characters were interesting on the surface (especially Patch and his magical abilities) but I think further development of Patch and the other main characters would add more substance to the series and create a more compelling read.
We find ourselves in the small village of Dwerry where Patch and Ctain have grown up together. One day Patch (who is a notoriously good climber) falls out of the tree he's in. The reason? He saw the Sorrow Man. Ctain believes he's lying and is seeking attention. Somehow there is hate from Ctain towards Patch. Later the king's soldiers appear and demand the children of the village and since the order is refused, the village is destroyed. Now the journey begins for Patch as he is trained by the Sorrow Man to retrieve the children enslaved and kill the king.
I wanted to like this story a lot more but there is so much packed into it with very little character development. For instance, Ctain was found and taken in by Patch's family and they grew up together. You would think they would be the best of friends, brothers. For some reason we go from them hanging out together to Ctain hating Patch with no explanation as to why or how that even came about. It was literally from one page to the next, they were friends then enemies.
Then there is the relationship with Bekka. We see the beginnings of true love in the making. Then the village attack happens and he is gone for years, training with the Sorrow Man. He shows back up and finds Bekka trying to escape from soldiers, and they just jump into having sex. Hmmm...ok.
Overall I really enjoyed the premise of this story but would have liked to see more exploration into the characters. This ends on a cliff hanger which means this is headed towards a series so maybe in the next story we will see more.
I was contacted by Zion Blue and asked if I would read and review this short story. My opinions are my own and I was not given this book in exchange for my review. I read this through Kindle Unlimited.
I'll start this review by saying that I always struggle with fantasy books. I give them a try every so often but they just don't seem to be my thing. I often find that the time it takes for me to learn a whole new world is more than my brain allows before getting disinterested. I prefer to focus on the action and relationships rather than world building.
That being said, this is a short book and knows it's limits. It doesn't try to pack in massively elaborate world building.
I did get invested in the characters and there were some twists and traitory that shocked me and I was left thinking "You nasty little *beep*". And I found I was interested to learn how our protagonist Patch was going to try to end the suffering of the village.
At times the writing is a little clunky and unsophisticated but bear in mind that this is a new author and I know for a fact that the author did a million times better than I would have done writing this story, especially as the fantasy genre is so incredibly difficult having to not only imagine a whole new world but describe it in an entertaining way to the reader.
The book shows that the author has great potential and whilst I didn't love this book I would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy the fantasy genre.
Review: For the most part this was a good book. I understood the overarching themes and concepts the author was going for and I liked the world building.
However, I felt like there was a lot missing for character development. I didn’t connect well with the main characters and I feel like I don’t know them at all. I also feel like a lot of the book is rushed and didn’t flow well.
Verdict: It was good, just needs work.
I was asked to read this book from the author a few months ago and I decided that I wanted to read it before the end of the year.
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
The story revolves around Patch. The village he lives in is demolished and he sets out to avenge the deaths of those who were murdered.
This was a short read and I finished it in one sitting. I liked the story and the idea behind it. It was direct and to the point. I appreciated where the author was going with the story and it was honestly pretty good. I did have some qualms with the writing style though.
Throughout, there are the same descriptions used for the same things. For instance, we hear that Patch has Mahogany coloured hair about 6 times. And we know that the Sorrow Man has charred, purple skin with frosty tipped fingernails because it is mentioned repeatedly. I feel like it was unnecessary and it distracted me. I am an odd person, and I admit that, but it caused me to not enjoy the story like I wanted to.
As well, there is a level of fat shaming in this book that is not appreciated. Describing a soldier as “Chunky Soldier,” instead of a name, and then stating that his horse was a bit more irritated, quote: “due to the load it carried compared to the other horses.” I don’t know what the purpose of this was..... But it made me drop half a star.
Overall, the story was uplifting and it has a good message behind it. It’s a bit repetitive in its writing style but it’s a quick read that was enjoyable.
Patch lives a quiet life in a basic and rural village surrounded by his family and fellow villagers, until one day he doesn’t. Patch’s world is turned upside down when a terrifying urban legend begins to come true triggering a series of fast paced, fantasy themed events including battles, tyrannical rulers, family feuds, redemption, loss and of course, as in any good coming of age story, love.
I really enjoyed the fast pace of the book and was hooked from the get go, as soon as the Sorrow Man was mentioned, who was he? What did he want with Patch?
While a short novel, the exciting and original plot exudes promise and lends itself to a hopefully successful series of young adult fantasy fiction.
At times I noticed that the writing style was a little wordy and some descriptive phrases were repeated a few times and I wonder if the book could be even further proofed and edited to tidy up these last little niggles.
As the novel was short and action focused (which I loved), I felt, at times, opportunities to explore character backgrounds/emotions and village history were slightly limited, However, I wonder if the depth will be developed throughout the series and the writer has planned this to keep us reading... I must admit it’s worked for me, I’m ready for a sequel to answer all my questions!
Overall I found this a promising first novel with a cliffhanger ending alluding to the extension into a series and I would be very interested to see how the story develops and deepens.
“Some villagers in Dwerry beleived the Sorrow Man was once a prince who committed terrible atrocities and was banished to the Creeper Forest forever.”
Patch lives in the peaceful and quiet little village of Dwerry. He’s been having strange dreams lately about supernatural things that warn him of dire things to come. Meanwhile King Lucent sets his sights on the village, he wants something from it and expects to have whatever the costs.
Sorrow Patch is a short fantasy story with an engaging plot that took me on a magical journey along with a young hero, evil kings and mythical creatures.
It ends with a cliffhanger wich is not my favorite thing, but overall it was a good and original story.
“I’ve convinced myself that I’m seeing legends that don’t exist.”
“The village that was once his home now tasted of death and sorrow.”
Thank you Zion Blue for giving me the opportunity to read and review your book.
Sorrow Patch is a fantasy story of a young villager and his struggle to fight back against the tyrannical king and his ruthless soldiers who threaten his peaceful life. It was difficult for me to get into this book, but only because I don't normally read much fantasy. Once I got past the struggles with the fantasy elements, I was hooked. Because it's very short, it's the perfect read for when you want to escape into a book but don't want to invest tons of time just to enjoy a good story. I started this book right before bed, and I finished it over breakfast.
If you like evil kings, magic, mythical beings, and brave heroes, then you should pick up Sorrow Patch. I understand that this has a sequel coming, and that's a good thing. There's a great cliffhanger ending, which I always enjoy.
Welcome to Dwerry a small village that they lay just beyond the Creeper Forest. That is until supernatural dreams try to warn one of the villagers, a 14 year old named Patch, that something menacing is coming. All at once Patch’s entire world changes and he is thrusted into becoming a warrior.
“His innocence was gone and what lingered was an insatiable thirst for vengeance”.
This book took me about 2 hours to read so it’s a great story to get into when you need a quick read! My only complaint was that the end came too soon. I was ready to continue on the adventure with Patch, but I will wait patiently until the sequel is released.
Great Premise but needs more
Overall, I liked the premise and the idea behind Ctain and Patch's character. However, the POV for Patch in the beginning needed to be younger. It didn't feel like it ever really matched his age.
The ending seemed like the end of a chapter rather than the end of the story, so I'm hoping this is a prequel to a much longer story to give a good conflict resolution
Likes-
Unique Premise
Patch's character
The backstory for the sorrow man
Dislikes-
Cliffhanger ending
Weird POV for young characters
Needs more character development for Ctain and Bekka
I misjudged this book at first. The description of the Sorrow Man really scared me. As I got further into the book, I realized that he was just trying to help out Patch all along. Patch didn't realize it at first. I couldn't believe how much violence happened. I was happy to see that Patch ended up getting a second chance at life. The Sorrow Man just really helped Patch to grow into a man. I thought it was really cute when Patch and Bekka got to reunite and be a couple years later. Patch had a lot of character development which I loved! I will say though, there are triggering things in this book, so just be aware of that. I would rate this book a 10 out of 10. I would recommend!
Too short
This book had potential. It’s was way too short which resulted in underdeveloped characters. I just felt it was too rushed. Everything happened so fast but the way it was written in the book it took weeks/years. I would have liked those moments to have had more depth to them. The characters dialogue was boring. I didn’t become invested in any of the characters. The author did write pretty good fight scenes. They were the most detailed scenes out of the book. I just wish the book was longer and that the author spent more time developing the characters and story plot.
If I could give it no stars, I would.
The plot behind this book has some promise however it is let down by really poor writing which gets worse as the book goes on.
The author has not properly proofed the book as it feels as though they have used the thesaurus function of Microsoft Word a bit too liberally as some of the word choices are a literal strange / barely make sense in the context of the story.
Just to make things worse, there isn't a real ending to the book, it just ends in the most painful cliffhanger, sequel-bait way.
I want to start off my review by saying I don't typically read fantasy, but this book was pretty good. This was a very quick read, a short story (45 pages I believe). This book is very fast paced and action filled as the village of Dwerry is attacked. The story goes into detail of the legend of Sorrow Man, is he real or just a figment of their imagination? The main character. Patch, must fight for vengeance after the King and his men destory his home village. The book leaves the opportunity at the end to be continued. It seems like it will be the start of a fantasy series.
This was a quick read (at just 45 pages) and a fun little tale. I enjoyed the fantasy elements of the Sorrow Man, the town of Dwerry and the character of Patch. I was wanting more of their backstory and more depth to the whys and hows of Sorrow Man's existence. The ending is a bit abrupt and I am hoping it leads into more books in the story because the door is certainly left open for more to tell - and I would look forward to reading it!
Interesting story and characters
A very interesting story. Very fast paced with lots of action. I do feel that some editing is needed. Also, there tends to be more telling vs showing. And im not quite sure where Ctain's feelings came from. He starts off the book caring for Patch and worried for him then immediately turns into a jerk without a very strong reason why besides that the author felt he needed to be the bad guy. Still an interesting way to tell a story.
Sorrow Patch-A tale of Triumph against adversity, is a self-published book of 43 Pages, by Zion Blue.
I think this Short short book is meant to be a series well atleast i hope it will be?
The story overall was well written.I would have wished for more fleshed out charater development but that's to be attributed to the short format.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable story from debut author Zion Blue. In Patch, Zion has created a terrific main character, who we can root for from the off. One can imagine that events like the one that befalls Patch used to happen in medieval and early modern times a lot, and this serves to make the story realistic and believable. Suffice to say, Sorrow Patch is a page-turner and I look forward to reading more stories from this author in the future.
I really enjoyed this snippet of what I hope will be a more lengthy series! I would have liked to read more about the world the characters were living in at the start, but there is potential here for many more Patch adventures & exploration into his powers. Would like to see more female characters as well.
I really enjoyed this very short fantasy book. The plot was really great and the writing was also very good.
The only thing that made this book a 4 stars and not a 5 stars is the fact that it is so short and I would have liked a few more descriptions of Ctain and Patch's training. But all in all a really good book. And I'm excited for the next book to come out some time next year.
I believe this book has amazing potential with some editing. This author has a really good concept and ideas, and talks about this genre in a way I’ve not read before. It’s also a good, short read.
The character development is also impressive, watching Patch grow as a person & the twist to show who the “bad guy” ends up being is WILD and something I wasn’t expecting.
Good story but due to it being a short story the writing is very rushed.
Also very predictable.
I’m not disappointed I read it and did find myself interested but the writing style was lacking a little for me to give it more stars.
Interesting, fast-paced story with a twist.
Although this is not my usual go to genre, I really enjoyed reading this book. It didn’t take me long to read and I found the characters interesting. I am looking forward to the sequel.
