I was asked to read and review this book by my lead pastor who gave each of our staff members a book in this “first steps” series to evaluate and determine how we could best use it in our ministry contest! Overall I really like this book! I appreciated the emphasis on Scripture memory and the helpful definitions. Most of all, the prize of this book, which uses the Fruit of the Spirit as an outline, does not fall into the ditch that many others on this topic do of producing a “just do better” or “be good for goodness sake” message but instead beautifully saturated each chapter with the Gospel and argues that because we have so abundantly experienced the love, joy, peace, etc of God, we should be desiring and enthusiastically seeking to emulate the traits of our Heavenly Father in order to better represent Him to the world around us.
I didn’t give this book a full 5 stars because I felt that the case study character of Jackie was not as helpful to the author’s message as she could have been and also because the “key point” listed at the end of each section ended up being more like a paragraph of a few key points. I think Dickens’ readers would be better served with something shorter and memorable like she uses with her definitions. However, both of these are minor complaints that should not keep you from picking up this great resource.
