Contains five short stories. In the title story a loving and contented husband discovers the true nature of his marriage, as though he has walked through a mirror and found that the life held in the glass was not his own at all.
Carlos Fuentes Macías was a Mexican writer and one of the best-known novelists and essayists of the 20th century in the Spanish-speaking world. Fuentes influenced contemporary Latin American literature, and his works have been widely translated into English and other languages.
Fuentes was born in Panama City, Panama; his parents were Mexican. Due to his father being a diplomat, during his childhood he lived in Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Washington, Santiago, and Buenos Aires. In his adolescence, he returned to Mexico, where he lived until 1965. He was married to film star Rita Macedo from 1959 till 1973, although he was an habitual philanderer and allegedly, his affairs - which he claimed include film actresses such as Jeanne Moreau and Jean Seberg - brought her to despair. The couple ended their relationship amid scandal when Fuentes eloped with a very pregnant and then-unknown journalist named Silvia Lemus. They were eventually married.
Following in the footsteps of his parents, he also became a diplomat in 1965 and served in London, Paris (as ambassador), and other capitals. In 1978 he resigned as ambassador to France in protest over the appointment of Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, former president of Mexico, as ambassador to Spain. He also taught courses at Brown, Princeton, Harvard, Penn, George Mason, Columbia and Cambridge.

Εδώ έχουμε μια συλλογή από νουβέλες δύστροπες, που δοκιμάζουν την υπομονή του αναγνώστη. Μεγάλος τεχνίτης ο Φουέντες. Αλλά μπορεί να γίνει τόσο μα τόσο στρυφνός, δύσκολος, στα όρια του ακατανόητου. Είναι η κατανόηση ενός κειμένου απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για να απολαύσεις αυτό που διαβάζεις; Ίσως όχι πάντα. If you have any prior expectations about this book, associated with "Latin American boom", "magical realism", "Catholicism/sex/magic", then you will not be surprised. These five novellas - taking place in locations ranging from Savannah, Georgia to Glasgow - are steeped in mystery and romance, involving characters who turn out to be dead, blackmail, ghosts, faith, desire...if this sounds frustratingly vague, it's possibly because the stories are as well. (There's a lot of variance; in general the shorter ones are less confusing.) I wasn't always sure what was going on, even if Fuentes' lush, rich prose (in Thomas Christensen's astonishingly flexible English) kept me moving forward.
A thought provoking, well written collection of five surreal short stories, (novellas), about death, time, beauty and courage, where religion and history shape the lives of Mexicans. I enjoyed this collection, though it was a slow read. Readers new to Fuentes should begin with his excellent ‘The Death of Artemio Cruz’. Fuentes fans (like myself), should find this a satisfying read. Fuentes’s writing style is experimental and innovative, focussing on Mexican reality and myth, exploring themes such as identity, history and social justice.
In “Constancia”, a doctor who lives in Savannah with Constancia, discovers she is not the exile he thought she was. She had not disclosed her past life before meeting and marrying him. His wife had a relationship years ago with the Russian actor who is their current neighbour.
‘La Desdichada” is about two students who steal a mannequin and bring it home, falling in love with it. Treating the mannequin like it is a real being.
In ‘The Prisoner of Las Lomas”, a wealthy lawyer in possession of a valuable secret, is held hostage by the past he has tried to quash.
In ‘Viva Mi Fama”, a man leaves his wife in Madrid. The story then includes Pedro Romero, a historically famous bullfighter and the painter, Goya. Goya had painted a portrait of matador, Pedro Romero.
‘Reasonable People” is about a group of architecture students who meet for lunch once a month with their mentor, who has a beautiful daughter, Catarina. The mentor architect’s interest is in a the sacred point of orientation. The story drifts along ending with a fable on the nature of miracles and faith.
In retrospect, I didn't pick Fuentes at his best for the second of his books that I have read. From a selection of reviews that I have read after finishing the book, he is best enjoyed in the novel form, which gives him more chance to develop his characters and themes. Though, in my experience, his writing has brilliant moments, and some dull ones.
In these five novellas, there are some memorable passages, but there is a fair bit of tedium to wade through also.
The stand-out of the novellas for me is Reasonable People in which a group of alumni of a renowned school gather each month for lunch with one of their favourite old teachers, now retired. This, and also La Desdichada, are much darker, and veer towards weird or horror fiction, and where I enjoy Fuentes the best. 'La Desdichada' is a satirical tale of two students who bring home a mannequin from a department store and fall in love with it.
I feel like I haven't quite got to grips with Fuentes yet. I enjoy parts of his writing, find other parts far less interesting, but because I haven't got to the right novel yet..
Although there are virgins aplenty in this collection - from mannequins to Madonnas - the author's principal theme is the collision of different worlds. In The Prisoner of Las Lomas, a rich entrepreneur is held captive in his mansion by a dispossessed family; in Constancia, the narrator finds himself in bed with a ghost. Fuentes's genius lies not only in the sleights of hand by which he achieves his strange connections, but also in the intricate way that he explores their potential as metaphors (a wooden doll comes to represent a real woman, Mexico and the poet's art). Viva Mi Fama in particular - a dense, haunting exposition of one of Goya's paintings - shows him at his imaginative and lyrical best.
I have to admit this is the only book by Fuentes I've been able to get through. Tried eariler books that were the darlings of deconstructionists, but couldn't find anything to latch onto. Images from some of these stories have stuck with me, particularly one about two young men who fall in love with a manequin. Read it when I was vacationing in Mexico and found that many of the stories were set somewhere else, such as Savannah, Georgia.
Almost impossible to rate - a book of five novellas: first two were quite good, third was awesome, last two were UNREADIBLE. I've been trying to get through them for months now, but I admit defeat, I'm giving up. Could've rated four stars if the last two weren't so... weird.
Colección de novelas cortas donde el tema central, creo yo, es el de los roles de las mujeres en la vida de los hombres, una combinación interesante de varios de sus temas recurrentes, como la relación de México con España, la historia profunda y la guerra de clases, con un toque de erotismo poético y un poco de magia, sin embargo se vuelve terriblemente confuso por las enormes reflexiones filotsoficas que empantanan historias. De los libros del autor este es de los que menos me ha agradado.
Son 5 novelas cortas que van desde la historia de un médico norteamericano que se casa con un mujer española que escapa del Franquismo, dos estudiantes de preparatoria que "conocen a una mujer" en desgracia, un hombre que tras cometer u. Supuesto crimen permanece prisión ero de su hogar, la historia de Goya y sus fantasmas y dos arquitectos en la ciudad de México. Las historias sin variadas y en si interesantes pero pierdes el hilo rápidamente por la torrencial lluvia de palabras y reflexiones filotsoficas que para mí no llevaron a nada. Debo decir que soy particularmente adverso a las narraciones que anteponen las ideas del autor al desarrollo de los personajes pero sin duda habrá personas que disfruten enormemente de este libro, pero para mí gusto a varias de las historias les sobra bastante tela.
Si tienes paciencia y te gusta desarmar las historias hasta sus argumentos filosóficos más profundos creo que este libro te podrá gustar, lo mejor creo yo es que no lo leas de corrido, lee una o dos historias y dale un descanso por qué si es engañosamente denso, sobretodo en el manejo temporal delas historias (características muy propia del autor). De nuevo no fue para mí este libro, pero no es malo, como muchos de los libros del autor, tiene mucho estilo pero poca sustancia.
I read the first half of this book and then took a long break before tackling the much longer last 2 stories and I’m glad I did. I learned how to take my time and read slowly and savor every word because this translation is beautiful. It brings out the color in Fuentes language which is what I love the most. His language is so transcendent his imagery folds in on itself and exposes the dreamlike sequences.
Intenso. Muy intenso. Quizás demasiado, como siempre es Fuentes. Del Sur de EUA a Escocia, pasando por México y España, otra vez Fuentes mezcla la novela con sus obsesiones casi ensayísticas. ¿Ensayo novelado o novela ensayosa? Lo que sea, a veces se vuelve difícil, denso, pesado... Me sacaba completamente de la historia para perderme en disgresiones filosóficas de sus personajes. Había que regresar, releer... ¿Cuál es un sueño, cuál un recuerdo, cuál un fantasma? Eso sí: el lenguaje en Fuentes siempre es un lujo. ¡Qué manera de manejar el Español! Encontré imágenes de una belleza increíble. La sorprendente conclusión de "Constancia", el manejo de tiempos de "Viva mi fama", la carga poética de "La desdichada" o la experiencia del convento secreto y sus fantasmales habitantes de "Gente de razón" siguen rondándome en la cabeza. Todavía no llega a gustarme el toreo, a pesar de la poesía que le imprime Fuentes, pero sin duda nunca volveré a ver un edificio antiguo con los mismos ojos después de leer este libro. Un gran escritor.

Lectura compleja, casi poetica. Historias entreveradas, entre el sueño y la realidad, lo mitico y lo banal. Hay que tenerle paciencia a este libro y al maestro, CArlos Fuentes
I sincerely hope that the meaning of these 5 stories was lost in translation because, if not, then this book is just a senseless mess that reads like the ravings of a madman.
I really enjoyed the first 2 or 3 stories....from there it got a little difficult to figure out what was going on. I really liked the story of the guy that is trapped in his house by the servants.
