About the author

Barbara Wood was born on 30 January 1947 in Warrington, Lancashire, England, UK. Together with her parents and older brother, she immigrated to the United States. She grew up in Southern California and attended Los Angeles Schools. After High School, Barbara attended the University of California at Santa Barbara but left to train as a surgical technician. During this time, Barbara held numerous jobs, before she sold her first novel in 1976. A few years prior, Barbara met her husband George. To date, Barbara has written 22 books, including two under the pen name Kathryn Harvey, these books are quite different from the Barbara Wood's novels and she, her agent and editor agreed that a pen name would serve to indicate the difference. She is an international best selling author with books translated into over 30 languages. The reader is transported to exotic countries that Barbara has meticulously researched to provide her fans with a true sense of the culture and history relevant to each story. At the heart of every book, is a strong, independent woman. Currently, Barbara is busy working on her next story that will, no doubt, showcase an extraordinary heroine in an exciting and intriguing adventure.

Nachdem ich das Buch beendet hatte, wusste ich, dass es genau das richtige zur richtigen Zeit war und, dass ich noch ein weiteres Buch von ihr lesen möchte.

Obwohl Barbara Wood sicherlich nicht zu den literarischen Autoren gehört, und dies vielleicht auch gar nicht möchte, ist dieses Buch durchaus lesenswert. Mir hat es sehr gefallen, weil es mir eine angenehme, spannende und nicht allzu leicht zu durchschauende Lesezeit bescherte.
In "Haus der Harmonie" erzählt Barbara Wood zum einen die Geschichte einer Chinesin, Mei-ling, die es, trotz aller widrigen Umstände, an die Spitze ihres eigenen Unternehmens schafft. Zum anderen wird die Geschichte von Charlotte, der Erbin dieses Unternehmens erzählt, die aktuell "Harmonie" vor großen Verlusten bzw. dem Ruin, ausgelöst durch einen Erpresser, retten muss.

Den Plott verpackt die Autorin in der Weise, dass sich durch die Entwicklung der Ereignisse in der Gegenwart, die Ereignisse der Geschichte und deren Folgen auf die Gegenwart, langsam zu entfalten beginnen. Dadurch gewinnt die Gesichte an Spannung und der nötigen Entwicklung, die den Leser einerseits auf eine Reise mitnimmt und anderseits zum Spekulieren anregt. Ich mag es sehr, wenn ich innerhalb solcher Geschichten spekulieren kann. Da ich aber meist richtig liege mit meinen Annahmen, mag ich es überhaupt nicht, wenn ich bis zum Ende recht behalten soll. Auch wenn ich hier ebenfalls direkt zu Beginn mit meiner Annahme hinsichtlich des Täters richtig lag, entschädigte mich die Autorin gegen Ende doch so, dass ich dem Buch diese vier Sterne sehr gerne gebe. Sowohl die Hintergründe als auch die Wendung am Ende hätte ich so nicht erwartet. Und so müssen Bücher für mich sein: Sie müssen mich fesseln können und vor allem, müssen sie mich überraschen können.
Ich bin mir allerdings durchaus bewusst, dass mancher, das Ende als sehr konstruiert ansehen kann und wird, aber mir gefiel es. Für mich war dieses Buch zur richtigen Zeit die richtige Lektüre.

La scrittura è semplice e efficace, equilibrata tra narrazione e dialoghi, in stile propriamente americano. La trama è intrigante e ben sviluppata ma per i miei gusti ci sono troppi colpi di scena stile "Beautiful", troppi segreti, troppe finte morti e rivelazioni del tipo "non posso amarti, sono tua sorella - GASP". Però devo ammettere che è comunque una trama interessante e ti fa venire voglia di finire il libro. Ultima cosa che vorrei aggiungere è che le storie d'amore scritte dalle donne sono molto meglio di quelle scritte dagli uomini.

Genial! siempre me captura Barbara Wood con la forma en que mezcla armoniosamente la ficción con los datos y hechos reales en los que se desarrolla una doble historia en la que no faltan los conocimientos médicos, el amor, la traición, muerte, la familia y el honor. Armonía y Charlotte dos personajes que cruzan sus historias de vida desde Singapur a San Francisco, y que a lo largo de casi sesenta años narran dos vidas llenas de esfuerzo, de ideales a cumplir y sobre todo el enigma de una traición que las unirá para defender todo por lo que han trabajado. Al final me deja pensando .... cuantos secretos hay en cada familia que al salir finalmente causaran trágedias o alegrías.

This was a mystery by Barbara Wood. It was about a Chinese family and a pharmaceutical company. I realized why I don't like mysteries. I get an icky feeling at the very first of the book, because something very horrible always happens at the beginning of the book. And that feeling doesn't go away until the problem is resolved, at the end of the book. I do love Barbara Wood, even though this was a mystery.

Libro interesante, muy fácil de leer y muy ameno, escrito con mucha maestría, aunque en algunos puntos es un poco pesado y repetitivo.
Me encanta el estilo narrativo a dos voces que utiliza la autora, no me ha gustado demasiado el final creo que es un poco precipitado para todo el desarrollo que ha tenido el resto de la novela.
Muy recomendable para los amantes de las sagas familiares y para descubrir algunos aspectos de la cultura china.

Lo que me gustó: Disfruté mucho de los capítulos que relatan la vida de Armonía Perfecta, pues comienza narrando cómo se conocieron sus padres en Singapur y cómo ella llegó a Estados Unidos y creó su empresa desde cero. Barbara Wood siempre es muy buena para construir historias familiares y mostrar cómo las acciones de una generación repercuten en la siguiente, además de que crea fácilmente el ambiente de cada época y lugar que se presentan en la historia.

Lo que no me gustó: Hay algunos problemas con la lógica del relato. Por ejemplo, Armonía se sorprende mucho cuando conoce a Gideon, a pesar de que hace años tenía una carta en la que se explicaba la situación (¡incluso se la sabía de memoria!). También, cuando se descubre a la persona culpable al final del libro, la policía espera hasta que cada personaje cuente su parte de la historia y se hagan preguntas unos a otros antes de seguir con su trabajo (es tan conveniente que hace que se pierda la sensación de realidad de la novela). Pero, lo que más me decepcionó del libro es que toda la trama está basada en malentendidos y problemas de comunicación, así que todo pudo haber sido evitado si los personajes hubieran tenido una conversación honesta, lo que hace que el argumento pierda bastante sentido para mí.

Warning: POPULAR FICTION! 🧡 So when I say this book is brilliant, it should be clear that I'm not talking about "high literature". Nevertheless (or perhaps because of this), Perfect Harmony by Barbara Wood played a crucial role in why I write a very specific type of novel today - namely popular fiction on a dual timeline. And for that I shall be eternally grateful to Mrs Wood! :-)

The contemporary part of Perfect Harmony is set in California, where an unknown enemy has targeted the family business Harmony Biotec. Over the course of one dramatic night, protagonist Charlotte Lee fights for her company's survival while finding herself in mortal danger. Surprisingly at her side: her first love Jonathan. This part relies on suspense and is well crafted.

But what really thrills me (still!) is the second timeline. Here we meet Charlotte's grandmother Mei-ling in 1920s Shanghai and follow her to San Francisco. Both settings provide, thanks to excellent research, a fascinating insight into Chinese traditions and natural healing arts. For Mei-ling has inherited from her mother not only knowledge of Chinese medicine, but also her precious medicine chest. This is meant to secure her survival, but Mei-ling's path is more than rocky... It's precisely this second timeline that makes Perfect Harmony one of my favourites - Barbara Wood transports her readers so tangibly into the exotic world of Charlotte's strong female ancestors that you feel as though you're experiencing it first-hand. Quite apart from that, she tells a beautiful story!

The novel is from the 1990s, so a few details seem rather dated, but that doesn't matter. Both timelines are skilfully woven together, and there's plenty of love, drama and suspense. Only the ending failed to convince me, as it feels rushed and somewhat flat - as if the author urgently had to meet a deadline. Nevertheless, the rest of the story more than makes up for this criticism.

Thanks to Barbara Wood's extensive knowledge, the novel has a credibility and authenticity that I found very enjoyable reading it. At no point where it was about technical know-how, the knowledge of Chinese healing arts or the customs and customs of China did I feel taught. On the contrary. It was extremely interesting and informative at the same time. In the passages where Charlotte conducts a dialogue with the stranger via e-mail, I often get a queasy feeling. These short lines not only caught my eye as I read them, but they also seemed menacing and cold to me. When I read such a passage for the first time, I was a bit irritated and faltered for a moment. But that was the only time.

Each character that is important for the course of the story is multi-layered and shows a certain character trait. While reading, I was able to understand very well why some of the characters acted, spoke, or felt the way they did and not differently. Barbara Wood skillfully plays with the multifaceted contrasts within the individual characters and has brilliantly created characters full of life and depth, some of which are full of surprises.

Exciting reading pleasure, not only for Barbara Wood fans. With her unmistakably clear style, the author has once again succeeded in conjuring up a varied, captivating, and exciting story on paper. Fascinatingly written, the novel not only gripped me emotionally, but the novel also gave me wonderful and at times even tingling reading pleasure.

vous l'aurez peut être compris je suis une grande fan des romans de Barbara Wood, et ce roman était un vrai coup de cœur, l'histoire prend place à l'extrême Orient où cette fois ci l'auteur nous fait découvrir la culture chinoise, leur éducation et surtout leur générosité. Outre la romance, et le suspense il y a une affreuse réalité qu'est la ségrégation.. Comme tous les romans de cet auteur, les évènements s'étalent sur plusieurs générations, et plus on avance plus les secrets se dévoilent, sachant tenir ses lecteurs sur leur soif, elle a un savoir faire unique, je n'arrivais pas à arrêter, j'enchainais chapitre sur chapitre et je n'étais jamais au bout de mes surprises, par moment je m'arrêtais pour admirer avec quel génie elle a su tisser ces événements...mais ce qui fait que ce roman a une place spéciale est qu'en le lisant j'ai découvert qu'il s'agissait d'un film que j'avais vu étant plus jeune sur M6, et n'ayant garder que des bribes je n'arrivais pas à retrouver le titre pour pouvoir le revoir, vous pouvez donc imaginer ma joie en découvrant avec le dénouement des évènements que c'était le film que je recherchais tant...

I was first gifted this book over 17 years ago. I loved it and could not put it down. When I joined the military, my sweet sister offered up her garage as storage. I had stored Perfect Harmony there. Unfortunately, during my stay in the military, my book was lost. I made the discovery during some leave time nearly a year later. I don't know how, but I had forgotten the name of the book! I asked everyone in my family if they remembered the name of the book. They did not. Throughout the years I would go to different libraries to see if anyone there could help me. I would ask at book clubs. Everyone was helpful, but I never did figure it out. This past Christmas, my husband, who has been helpful in my efforts throughout the years finally found it! Perfect Harmony (in hardback) was the perfect Christmas gift! Not only do I love this story, but I was so touched that my husband scoured the internet to find it for me! I am so excited to have this story back in my book collection. And again, I could not put the book down until I was exhausted, and finally would relent and go to bed.

Es un buen libro, habla sobre Chaelotte Lee dueña de una empresa que vende medicinas naturales chinas que sus antepasadas fundaron y trabajaron con mucho esfuerzo. Pero una noche le hacen saber que personas están muriendo y el único factor presente en las víctimas era que consumían productos de su marca. La policía hace acto de presencia y a lo largo de la historia se enfrascan en buscar si hay algún culpable o si la empresa lo es. Charlotte se reencuentra con su amor del pasado que la ayuda en este problema permitiendonos ver un poco de su relación, además, durante los procesos de investigación también se nos muestra las vidas que llevaron dos antepasadas, que si no me equivoco serían la de su abuela y visabuela.

El libro me gustó, se tiene que prestar mucha atención sobretodo cuando se cambia de personaje, yo tuve que hacer un árbol genealogico para no equivocarme con la información jajaja. Las historias de sus antepasadas me hacían doler el corazón pues no la tuvieron fácil, hay muchos giros en la historia que me volaron la peluca¿? Muy bueno.

Dies ist nur ein Aufhänger dieses spannenden und unterhaltsamen Buches. Die Großmutter, die in China als unehelich geborene Halbchinesin aufwuchs und in jungen Jahren nach Amerika ging um ihren Vater zu finden und alle Verwicklungen rund um die Familie in China und Amerika gehören genauso dazu, wie die Vorurteile und rechtlichen Einschränkungen in Amerika.
Barbara Wood schafft es mittreißende und unterhaltsame Pageturner über die unterschiedlichsten Themen zu schreiben. Für mich immer eine Garantie der guten Unterhaltung.

Bastante bien, la trama de investigación y misterio engancha, sumado a los episodios donde viaja ál pasado de la abuela.
Hacia la mitad del libro ya me olía quién era el malo, pensé que tendría un final predecible pero para nada. Un giro final bastante bueno.
No tiene demasiado momento erótico-festivo ni ñoño, pero si se toma demasiado tiempo en describir como es el pelo de uno, como el la habitación, como es el pasillo o la carretera por donde van etc (para mí es lo que le hace perder una estrella. Demasiadas descripciones).Se hace un poco largo, parece que nunca llega el final.
Me quedé un poco con sensación de que falta una página sobre la protagonista al final. Qué pasa con su prometido que deja de existir a medidados del libro???

Por qué leí este libro? Bueno en realidad era el libro de mi mamá, cuándo era una adolescente, y quería que yo lo leyera y compartiera lo que me gusta y lo que no me gusto y bueno creo que queda más que claro mi puntuación.

Este libro está lleno de amor, alegrías, tristeza, como autovalorarte y enredos que habrán capítulos en donde no puedes ni creer lo que estás leyendo, y eso hace que sea un libro excelente, como nos cuentan la historia adaptada en los años 1908 y a partir de ahí cómo transcurre todo como en Estados Unidos maltratan a los chinos prejuicios como estaba mal visto, y demás no tengo palabras para expresar todo lo único que sé es que fue una de mis lecturas favoritas.

Ich habe das Buch in einem Tauschregal entdeckt und nicht so viel beim Lesen erwartet... "Das Haus der Harmonie" hat mich aber teilweise positiv überrascht. Die Szenen, die auch Harmonies Sicht geschrieben sind, fand ich greifbar und auch spannend geschrieben. Die Szenen in der Gegenwart fand ich zu aufgesetzt, zu gekünstelt dramatisch und irgendwie flach. Die ständigen Rückschauen auf Charlottes und Johnnys Vergangenheit waren durch die vielen Jahresangaben oder Zahlen für mich nicht so leicht nachzuvollziehen und eher verwirrend. Aber die Einblicke in die Ideen der TCM waren gut und das Ende hätte ich nicht erwartet.

Disfruté mucho leyendo este libro. Fue el primero que leí de esta autora. Se nota que investiga y se informa antes de escribir. Es interesante como va intercalando entre lo que está sucediendo en el presente, con hechos del pasado y cómo están relacionados entre sí, la relevancia que tienen actualmente y el porqué de muchas cosas que se van revelando a medida que avanza la trama. Está lleno de emociones, desventura, amores, desamores, aciertos, fracasos y su cuota de suspenso. Me pasé todo el libro intrigada y deseando llegar al siguiente capítulo.

Amo questa autrice ed ho adorato tutti i suoi romanzi che finora ho letto, ma con questo ha fatto decisamente un passo indietro. Mentre la storia ambientata nel passato è almeno un minimo convincente ed appassionante, e non vedi l'ora di sapere come si sono svolti realmente i fatti, quella nel presente, nonostante fosse interessante lo spunto iniziale e ci fossero le giuste premesse, non solo emoziona poco, forse a causa anche di una protagonista femminile con poco "appeal", ma risulta difficile da digerire e da seguire per l'eccessivo utilizzo di termini tecnici ed informatici, rendendo così la narrazione per larghi tratti noiosa e faticosa. Vi consiglio assolutamente altri romanzi della Wood ben più riusciti, come "Verde città nel sole" e "Momenti d'amore".

Interesting book. Not what I expected. There were too many flashbacks and I don't exactly condone extramarital affairs, but this book seems to have no qualms with it. It says, "If my wife is having an affair, I'm free to do the same." Ugh!

I didn't guess the ending. That's a nice surprise! I thought it was her friend, Nancy, the whole time. Wrong! I also didn't guess the twist in relationships at the end of the book, either. That's what made me give this book a better review than I otherwise would have.

The past holds strength in Barbara Woods books. This was a very interesting read because of the series of flashbacks a grand daughter has about her family history (no herbs used)after her grandmothers death. Of course a series of crises that occur in the Chinese herbal remedies company she inherrits gets the ball rolling. Again...told in the way that captured my attention.... loved the book however...craved eggrolls the entie read.

What can be more important than your family and REAL friends, love and trust? If you find out, that all your world is nothing but a lie - only to save all the moral things that you should be taught?
Though this novel was one full of IT, which isn't my favourite, I have learned to read these details as if they didn't matter that much - the story itself is a fantastic one, but shows realistically, which misunderstandings cause the biggest and worst consequences.

This is the second book i have read from this author. Years ago I read her book 'The Dreaming'. I really enjoy this author,her writing, style & her ability to create a 'storytelling' effect within her writing.
