Some nightmares are too terrifying to forget...Paul Mahan just wants to put everything behind him. The shadowy halls of Rookwood apartments, the building's bloodstained past, and most of all, the chilling supernatural presence he encountered there...
But when Neve Cotter, a former Rookwood resident, reaches out to him for help, Paul finds himself unable to turn away. Neve's daughter, Ella, has been possessed by a tortured spirit that Paul freed from Rookwood's haunted grounds. Feeling responsible for the girl's pain, he agrees to accompany a paranormal TV show into the abandoned building, hoping to find a cure for Ella's curse.
As Paul leads the group into Rookwood's labyrinth of shadows and illusions, he discovers that the dark, powerful presence that haunts his nightmares has returned. And it's stronger than ever before. This malignant entity feeds off an ancient power, a darkness that has festered within the building's walls for centuries.
Even the destruction of Rookwood may not be enough to end its reign of terror...
PALMER ENTITY is the sequel to the horrifying novel ROOKWOOD ASYLUM. The late Doctor Miles Rugeley Palmer, who along with all the other staff and all the patients of the former Rookwood Asylum, perished in the fire in 1955, has for all these decades collected to him in spirit those patients and staff, together with additional spirits who have died in the building over the years. This massed entity seemingly is confined to the building's premises, but in the remaining copse of trees is awakening the ancient pagan god which once ruled that forest. American Paul Mahan unwillingly agrees to participate in a ghost hunting documentary in the building, fearful that more tragedy will ensue, which of course does occur.
PALMER ENTITY is riveting and terrifying, due to the implacability of the horrors and targeting of bystanders and the virtually innocent. I quite enjoyed this read, as I did the first in the series, and hope it continues.
This is the second book in the Asylum Series and continues the story from where it ended in Book One. Liz (I mistakenly called her "Eve" in my review of Book One - Senior Moment) has been freed from her prison in Rookwood Asylum but her task is still unfulfilled. Her imprisoner is still active and, although tied still to the asylum, can inflict plenty of damage to others. Liz needs to protect Ella, Paul and others haunted by the entities of Rookwood. The only way to permanently eliminate this horror is to destroy all that remains of Rookwood Asylum. There is plenty of action in this book. The horror here is a bit more subtle than in some of Scare Street's other offerings, but it is still plenty frightening. The last third of the book, where Paul and his allies finally confront the evil entity, is as good as anything out there. You have to wonder if entities like Dr. Palmer actually exist in some alien plane, just waiting for the unwary to wander into their realm. I certainly hope not, but I also hope that stories like this one keep on coming.
I really love this series!!!! Just when you think “this is it!!””...BAM!!!! Another twist is thrown your way. All the characters are great and I really am cheering for Paul, who despite it all, still comes through when all seems lost. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!!!!
I wish the author would have made the Paul character a little stronger. I liked how he told the Palmer story. Kinda scary that there could be that kind of crazy person out there. Looking forward to reading the 3rd book.
This is the second book in the Asylum Series, and it picks up a year after the first one ends. Paul and Mike are drawn back into goings on at the asylum. The young girl who was involved in the first book is still being tormented by the spirits, and her mother asks for help. A “true hauntings” TV shown sends their team into the asylum (note: I screwed up; in my review of the first book in this series I had this TV team in it; I had read both books some time before I wrote the reviews and got them mixed up), stirring up trouble. And a new entity besides Palmer and the inmates of the asylum has risen, one far older than the asylum itself.
Paul and Mike seek out advice from one of Mike’s old professors, a specialist in myth and folklore. They find out the history of the site the asylum was built on, and realize there may be more than Palmer to deal with; the old entity doesn’t like to be disturbed and Palmer has disrupted his land.
I really enjoyed the old professor; he seemed rather Tolkien-esque. Paul and Mike get their characters filled out more. The TV team was enjoyable- as I said in my review of Rookwood Asylum, the psychic was amusing. The rest of the crew were likable people, and reacted to the mayhem as one would expect people to do. The story is suspenseful- is anything ever going to stop this thing?!?! And is anyone safe from it?!?
I have read this book and the first one, and I am not really happy about the messages he portrays in these stories. I may be too critical about these books so far, but I feel like I need people to get my opinion on this. Firstly, I really can't stand the idea of a "human" ghost having great and individual power, (aka "ego") to imprison and control "other spirits". To also have the ability to influence others to kill and be killed. It's like the story being told, he was already in a godlike state. Secondly, a merger with a pagan deity? Then half attempted honorable mentions of life after death. I feel like if you are going to include religious anecdotes, at least have some factual beliefs intertwined in your story. The paganism is strong in these books. Thirdly, the main character of these series is...i don't know. I don't like him very much. These are just my opinions.
I haven't found a character that I can ultimately "root" for. Can't really relate to any of them. There are maybe two characters that were interesting enough for me, Mike and Percy.
Sorry to be so critical, but I have very mixed feelings about these stories so far.
The books were written well, although some parts felt a little rushed? I can't really put into words how I feel about these books so far. It was ok.
I really enjoyed Rookwood Asylum, but this one was a bit of a slow burn for me. I know it’s gotten a lot of rave reviews. It just wasn’t anywhere near as scary as the first one, in my opinion, and just...poor Paul. Let the guy catch a break. That being said, I’ll read the next one. I loved Declan in the first book and I saw him in the sample for the next one, so I’m stoked for that. I hope it’s a faster read. The first one felt almost ALMOST believable (if you believe that sort of thing) at SOME points. This one seemed a bit mixed up.
Saw reviews that claimed Rookwood Asylum was a great read & horrifying, etc. it was good but I was hoping this one would build on the first & be real good, but it was barely ok. I will continue with the final but I am not holding out much hope it will get better than 2 stars from me. Hope I'm wrong.
Not as good as the first for me but very good nonetheless. Just when you think it's wrapping up! Well...guess again? Can't wait for the next book in the series!
Disappointingly I didn't like the second book in the Rookwood series. It was too slow a burner for me & was only the last couple of chapters that I felt it got exciting. The story seemed to have run its course in book one.
I enjoy the supernatural but this was more of a zombie horror. The idea was good but the plot appeared to spin out of control. Far too much gore for me but, horror fanatics will probably love it.
Well, this writer has my number. Got nothing done today because I couldn't put my kindle down! Yep, read it in one sitting. It flows so smoothly, full of twists and turns. If you are a fan of spooky mystery, you have to read this!
Not a great sequel to Rookwood Asylum. This book felt hastily thrown together and the story really did not go anywhere. I have one more book to read in this series, but I have to decide if it’s going to be worth it or a waste of time…
Palmer Entity is the second book in the Asylum Series written by David Longhorn. The author came up with an interesting plot that was different from the first one but was a good continuation of the first book. I have to admit though this was not as good as the first book was, which will not stop me from reading on since I do need to know how this will all play out.
Paul is definitely the driving force in all of this and we learn more about him, Ella and Palmer in this second book. We also learn more about Paul's neighbors Neve and her struggles.
Yes this was not as strong as the first one was but I for one really need to know how this ends.
I have to say it is a bit slow. I do like that it follows the first book well. I am hoping the third one picks up the pace from the beginning. It does give a creepy vibe that made me want to read the third book.
