Rediscover these heart-pounding classics in an anthology with two thrilling tales from New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen.
IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS
The quiet scandal surrounding her parents’ death has always haunted Beryl Tavistock. Now she’s asking dangerous questions and the answers are proving that the past does not die easily. Pulled into a world of espionage, Beryl quickly discovers that she needs help, and ex-CIA agent Richard Wolf is her only hope. But in a world where trust is a double-edged sword, friends become enemies and enemies are killers.
THIEF OF HEARTS
Reformed cat burglar Clea Rice has witnessed enough crimes to put her on the straight and narrow. But little does she suspect that her search for justice will land her in the arms of wealthy English gentleman Jordan Tavistock. As their attraction grows, so does the danger. Now their biggest concern isn’t whether a proper gentleman and a cat burglar can find happiness...it’s whether they’ll survive long enough to find out.
Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.
While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction. In 1987, her first novel was published. Call After Midnight, a romantic thriller, was followed by eight more romantic suspense novels. She also wrote a screenplay, "Adrift", which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.
Tess's first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her suspense novels since then have been: Life Support (1997), Bloodstream (1998), Gravity (1999), The Surgeon (2001), The Apprentice (2002), The Sinner (2003), Body Double (2004), Vanish (2005), The Mephisto Club (2006), and The Bone Garden (2007). Her books have been translated into 31 languages, and more than 15 million copies have been sold around the world.
As well as being a New York Times bestselling author, she has also been a #1 bestseller in both Germany and the UK. She has won both the Nero Wolfe Award (for Vanish) and the Rita Award (for The Surgeon.) Critics around the world have praised her novels as "Pulse-pounding fun" (Philadelphia Inquirer), "Scary and brilliant" (Toronto Globe and Mail), and "Polished, riveting prose" (Chicago Tribune). Publisher Weekly has dubbed her the "medical suspense queen".
Now retired from medicine, she writes full time. She lives in Maine.
Both of these novels leaned more towards romance than horror/thriller, which was definitely misleading considering the cover. I was ready for people to be bleeding from the freaking eye sockets but alas nothing of the sort happened. In Their Footsteps wasn't a bad short story - it had an engaging backstory, the plot moved quickly, and the two main characters were capable and intelligent. The ending was actually surprising! but logical based on all of the clues given to us. Thief of Hearts was a whole other ballgame.... Clea was self-depreciating to the point I almost quit the book twice. The improbability of most of the story was quite high lol and I rolled my eyes at EVERYTHING. I was annoyed that nothing about the story made any sense but mustered through. Disappointing for my Spook-tober but now it can go to someone else's home who will enjoy it more than I did.
I've been reading Ms. Gerritsen's books from her first one in 1986 to the present. Her romances and romantic suspenses are always page turners. Given the choice though, on a re-read I'd pick one of her medical thrillers which had me laying awake at night thinking about them. Her's are the kind of books you pick up on a Friday night when you get home and sit there reading it till early Sunday morning on a non-stop marathon because you just can't stop.
One thing I've noticed about her romantic suspenses is that she writes them with a British flavor. That kind of stiff upper lip thought processes. Very interesting.
I’ve read many Tess Gerritsen books – both her older romantic suspense books and her newer mystery books – and I can safely say she is one of my favourite authors. However, the Tavistock books failed to entertain me in the way I had hoped. Truthfully, they are my least favourite of all the Gerritsen books I have read.
Both had the promise of being wonderful reads. Both suggest at all Gerritsen has to offer in her romantic suspense books, yet neither story really pulled me in. There was the odd bit of action, but nothing much ever really happened. In fact, both books seemed to make promises without giving any real delivery.
If you’ve yet to read a Gerritsen book, I certainly recommend starting somewhere else. She really can do – and has repeatedly done – better than this. Were it not for the fact I brought the omnibus, I would not have read both stories. I will admit to the second book being better than the first, yet neither were up to the usual high Gerritsen standard.
Overall, a disappointing read from one of my favourite authors. You’re always going to find them – the books where your favourite authors didn’t quite reach their usual high – I’m just disappointed two books with so much promised turned out to be the Gerritsen books I didn’t enjoy.
I think the term "suspend your disbelief" applies to this one. What a ridiculous climax and finish. The characters were likeable enough, albeit not well developed, to keep me reading. I won't be going back for more.
No me ha gustado naaaaada!. Un intento de mezclar thriller con romance que le quedó escalfado. He de decir en su defensa que lo he leído un poco a la trágala, pero creo que su falta de interés influyó mucho en que lo leyera así. Una historia anodina. Destripadoras
Okay..okay. This wasn't the spine tingling story that gave you the creeps at night but, it was a well written, mystery-love story that captured your attention. The second book is a continuation of the first and further develops the characters into complete the story. Both books are based on a brother and sister who become involved in a spy web and international crime. They solve the crime with the help of members of MI6, INTERPOL, Scotland Yard and other experts in the crime field. There are many sub characters such that I decided to keep notes. This helped to avoid confusion and help me to recall each new character's role in the story. However, the introduction of each new character and their history, helped to build the storyline to a very interesting end.
These are apparently early works of Gerritsen's; there just isn't the same plotting and depth of characterization as her current thrillers. They're more like cotton candy for the brain, very fluffy and light on plot and characterization.
Love the Rizzoli & Isles series, but this was written before I think... more like romance novels my mom used to read with that action thrown in.... she was moving toward the action/mysteries here. So these two weren't my favorites, but I did read them. LOL. Go figure.
This review is for THIEF OF HEARTS. I liked this book. I can see Tess improving with each new novel. Clea is an American forced to run in England. She had seen a fraud committed by wealthy businessman, and he was trying to have her killed. The problem was her former jail sentence. Nobody would believe a former jail inmate. But if she found the Eye of Kashmir, a valuable dagger, she could prove what she had seen. Jordan Tavistock joined her in the search. He was an English gentleman who had met her when she was trying to steal the dagger and he was trying to steal some valuable letters. They paired up for an exciting adventure throughout England.
Ridiculous story, I can't even be bothered to finish the book. The author obviously had no knowledge of Europe & the Mediterranean, our heroine was supposedly going to Brussels aboard a ship? Shortly after leaving Naples the old ship was passing the South coast of Sardinia as the engine room exploded. The crew were thrown into the water where our wonderful heroine swam the two miles to Spain? I've read several of Tess Gerritsen's thrillers which are quite good, but I will never ever read one of her romances again!
It was a nice romantic tale. It didn’t start out cozy and I wasn’t sure where it was going. I had read the previous book about the parents death and Beryl and Richard. This was a nice sequel so Jordan could find someone, too. I had read In their Footsteps some time ago and am sure I probably wrote a review so won’t do that here.
Not a Rizzoli and Isles book, the beginning of Footsteps was a slog but eventually developed 2 interesting mysteries full of stereotypes of wealthy Brits, Parisian style and subterfuge, and a dashing American hero. Good get-away reading, without such suspense that it took precedence over other tasks.
Having read 22 books by Tess Geristand, I eagerly paid $2.99. What a disappointment! These 2 titles were written in ‘94 &’95,25 years ago. There is no comparison with her recent medical related books & these that I ordered.I was suckered in the name. Shame on me !
Was für eine unsägliche Schmonzette! Billigst, klischeehaft, vorhersehbar. Unschuldige, verfolgte Schöne trifft reichen Gentleman.... Ich dachte, ich lese ein Werk der genialen Autorin, die Rizzoli & Isles erfunden hat. Nach der Hälfte hab ich aufgehört.

I listened to an audiobook that only contained the "Thief of Hearts." Clea Rice is a cat burglar who is being pursued by some bad guys with deep pockets and far reaching influence. She is surprised on one of her jobs when she meets Jordan Tavistock, a gentleman burglar who through his ineptitude nearly gets them both discovered. Jordan becomes obsessed with Clea and is certain that there is more to her story than that she is just a burglar. Clea just wants to complete her job and remain alive because she cannot fathom how someone in Jordan's position could be interested in her. She has been running for so long she has ceased trusting anyone. However, hearts are tricky things and they want what they want.
I thought that this was an interesting plot with an intriguing twist.
I enjoy Tess Gerritsen's thrillers, and made the mistake of judging the book by it's cover with Thief of Hearts. This one turns out to be a romance novel, about an American woman, beautiful and irrestistible, and an English aristocrat, each of whom catches the other while they each burgle the same man's mansion. Yes, there's some intrigue and adventure, but my tolerance for gushing about the sexiness of the protagonists is very, very low. Just let me say that this might be immensely entertaining to readers who enjoy the genre. As one who does not, I don't feel qualified to assess this particular volume with objectivity.
In Their Footsteps: My first thought after being halfway through this book was that it wasn't Tess's finest. But when I was completely done, my mind had changed slightly. I love the romance, the chemistry and passion between Beryl and Richard. And the ending? It took me by moderate surprise.
Theif of Hearts: This was five stars. I love continuation novels, I honestly do. I just liked the relationship between Clea and Jordan better than that of Beryl and Richard. But that's my opinion. I finished it and sat there, just... processing it. Because it was amazing. Only Tess could do that.
Couldn't get through this. I found it ridiculous the heroine would be offended that the hero would run a background check after she broke into a house, was nearly blown up, and then shot at but was unwilling to come clean on why crazy shit like that would happen. And all within the first couple days of meeting each other. This woman clearly develops unrealistic emotional bonds with anyone in her company for more than five minutes.
