I had spotted this manga several times already but never got to reading it, well until yesterday that is!

And boy, I am glad I finally read it as I love it so much. It is a silly, slice-of-life with some hints to romance. We have our MC Nishikata who gets teased constantly by Takagi-san who is sitting next to him in school, and also often walks/cycles the same route back home as him.

Now I hear you say, teasing? But that is not that nice. Don't worry, it is all good play, and it is all friendly. I might even say she probably likes him (though she won't say it out loud). Nishikata is just easily flustered and easily tricked (he isn't really the smartest).

I laughed so hard when he would try to trick Takagi, only to be counter-attacked with a trick of her own. So far, the first volume, he hasn't yet managed to trick her without getting a counter trick back. For instance she would pretend not to know what it is called when two people (boy/girl) share an umbrella, which brought on a very flustered Nishikata. :P

The teasing, the jokes, they are all quite funny, and I am amazed that Nishikata is falling for them all. You would think he would get a bit smarter, or think better jokes, but so far it is failing. I hope that in the end he will be able to trick Takagi, even if it is just for one time.

I will definitely read this manga further as I want to know if they get together in the end. They should. They make a cute couple. :)

The art is also pretty great, but then again I did love it as well in another manga of this mangaka.

I would recommend this manga if you are looking for a funny, cute, silly manga.

look I'm sure some people might think this is cute, but the whole time I was reading it, I just couldn't shake the idea that someone could be as stupid and gullible as Nishikata

i just didn't find this concept very endearing. but, hey, the art's cute as heck

Meine Meinung:

Man muss echt lachen beim Lesen.

This is pretty cute, but haven't fully got attached.

The series is basically Nishikata teasing Takagi in class or at a different location like the pool. It's cute, and even a few moments have Nishikata showing her true colors, that she has a major crush on Takagi. If only Takagi would just see within her soul!

Got the first 13 volumes so in for the long haul!

Well, the art's great. The artist can pull off some really great reaction shots, which I guess is the whole point of the book. Otherwise, it's one of those mangas that's essentially a single gag played over and over. In this one, the gag is that Takagi is an expert at teasing Nishikata, who's so gullible he falls for every one of her tricks no matter how much he overthinks it. And, of course, she actually has a crush on him. This kind of book always loses my interest eventually, but this one I couldn't even get into the first chapter. Nishikata is annoyingly pathetic, not endearingly so, and Takagi is gleefully mean. Maybe if they were each getting as good as they got, I could get into it, but that's not the case.

A cute manga about students crushing on each other and oblivious to this fact. Honestly, I'm surprised by its high-rating...it just doesn't feel memorable at all.

My introduction to this series was the ★★★★★ anime (On Crunchyroll (S01) and Netflix (S02)). I was curious to discover how different the manga was.

The animators mostly copied the manga plots exactly, so there aren't any big changes there, though they jumbled the order of events a bit. What stands out is that difference in art style. The story came out seven years ago, so the character designs evolved. The kids were originally drawn a bit older, and they matched their supposed age—middle school (6-9th grade)—but I'm also holding volume 10 in my hands and can see that the characters are depicted as you see them in the anime. I have to admit that I find their depiction in the anime and later volumes to look too young for their age and predicaments. I far prefer the 2014 styles.

That being said, how does the manga hold up as a book? If you aren't familiar with the anime, you may be in for a treat. Nishikata is a middle school boy who sits next to Takagi in class. They also live near each other, so she walks home with him daily. Nishikata is clueless to love and has no idea why the sadistically cute Takagi latches onto him like a remora, flustering him and teasing him at every opportunity. Every teaser will know instantly that it is Nishikata's exaggerated faces that make teasing him so rewarding. However, this would be a mean book if not for one character flaw of Takagi's—her teasing gets in the way of her expressing her affection for Nishikata. Every tease pushes him further away, confusing him, and angering him. This interaction between the two romantically attracted kids makes for a delightful story.

Each chapter is short and is generally centered around Takagi teasing Nishikata, or Nishikata trying to get even, with other classmates thrown in to break the tension or provide a setup for the next conflict. It's a wonderful series. I highly recommend it for those interested in manga without the excesses of shoujo or Shonen stories.

★★★★★ for character development and pacing. Masterfully done.

Coming to the manga after getting caught up to the most recent season(s) of the anime adaptation and capper movie. I have to say that Takagi-san's tone is more innocent & sweet in the anime. This Takagi-san (manga version) goes much harder at Nishikata. It has themes that were not carried over into the anime, like girls being on their periods, being self conscious about breast size, etc., which dials the cringe factor to 11 in the manga. Takagi-san is much more active as a prankster in the manga, while in the anime it is nearly always a case of Nishikata hoisting himself on his own petard over and over while Takagi-san just smiles & laughs at him. The anime retelling is softer and kinder, though the teasing element is there it doesn't feel mean-spirited the way the manga sometimes does. Takagi-san obviously has romantic feelings for Nishikata but girls mature emotionally faster than boys do and he's still catching up and coming to terms why she makes his heart beat faster, etc. Takagi-san is clearly prepared to play the long game while Nishikata slowly figures things out. It's a sweet story of young love; If the anime had kept the same tone as the manga source material the cringe comedy might have hampered my ability to enjoy the show. But even this hard-core version of Takagi-san is very mild compared to, say, Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro, which is on a whole other level.

Nishikata is determined to stop letting himself get teased by Takagi. But Takagi is a master, and Nishikata is just too easy for her to tease. Does Takagi hate him or like like him?

The back of the book says the characters are in middle school but they felt like upper middle schoolers/lower high schoolers to me. Nishikata is an awkward but likable guy. It seems pretty obvious Takagi "torments" him because she likes him. This story feels entirely believable as someone who works with teens. Nishikata says out loud things that so many teens think (he agonizes over the response to Takagi's statements/questions that will get him the least teasing all the time). I can see teens finding him relatable and the situations he gets himself into as funny.

Notes on content:
Language: I don't remember any, but there might have been a couple minor swears.
Sexual content: Nishikata is challenged by Takagi to guess why she isn't swimming during PE class. He guesses it is either her period or she feels self-conscious about having a small chest but he really doesn't want to say either of those things out loud.
Violence: None
Ethnic diversity: The characters are all Japanese
LGBTQ+ content: None mentioned
Other: Lots of socially awkward conversations and settings. Takagi is a pretty relentless and cunning tease so Nishikata feels stressed all the time.

Teasing Maser Takagi-San is a slice-of-life manga about two middle schoolers Nishikata and Takagi. Takagi is a master teaser who is constantly teasing classmate Nishikata. Each short chapter focuses on Nishikata trying to trick Takagi only to have it backfire. Nishikata’s facial expressions when he realizes that Takagi has outsmarted him once again are humorous. Nishikata gets easily frustrated when teased which coupled with his facial expressions makes Takagi want to tease him more. The reader finds themselves looking forward to seeing if in the next chapter Nishikata is finally going to gain the upper hand in teasing Takagi. The teasing, though friendly, can get a bit repetitive to the point where it’s hard to imagine a character falling for such tricks. All in all this manga would be appealing to both middle school and high school students as the humor and teasing are mild and entertaining. Besides the humor there are also hints of romance throughout the manga.

We would know from only the cover page that it's a story about those two(Takagi and Nishikata), and it's around their everyday life.

It's a lovely series from my point of view, it's contain romance but can't be categorise as a romance(yet), I always hope it's get there but, it's the author's privillage right?

And yeah, It's also seems that it can't be categorise as comedy either, but it's really a wonderful manga.

I wonder if the author's ideas will end someday and stopped like Doraemon Series(I hope not). Well, it''s a typical slice-of-life circle so it's mean no end(I hope it's forever).

Also, I have waited for a long time for it to be translated into my native language, and... it happens♡

was recommended this by a friend after reading and loving nagatoro, akutsu-san, and anjou-san

it fits well within my newly found favorite "dominant, pretty girl/gyaru trope bullies antisocial loser/nerd trope until they realize they can't live without one another" relationship trope BUT what sets this manga apart is that it's set in middle school !!! our characters Takagi-san and Nishikata look like 12 year olds,,,,

sure the funnie and the hints at a nice n cute romcom are all there and should brew up to form another entry in this GLORIOUS subgenre, but seeing that the two have barely gone through puberty yet,,,,, i cant stop thinking "hey you should listen to class and do your homework"

oh well, im sure it'll grow on me eventually
overall, itsa nice

Lucu. Tapi kalau kepanjangan kayaknya bikin gregetan deh. Soalnya satu volume ini isinya cuma si Takagi ngegodain Nishikata doang. Orang Jepang mungkin demen yang beginian kali ya. Tarik-ulur-tarik-ulur... 😓😅

Kalo si Takagi jadi ama Nishikata jadi gak seru, gak jadi jg gak seru. Aneh bat.

Tapi ini covernya cakep deh. Yang volume-volume lainnya juga cakep covernya... 😻

Beautiful artwork and an interesting premise--this appears to be a series with a lot of potential. However, I will say that Takagi's trickery does wear thin pretty quickly. You just feel so bad for poor Nishikata! Judging by the premise, Nishikata probably won't get his revenge until the end of the series (if ever!) but even so, every time Takagi pranks him, I just keep hoping that this will be the time he gets her back!

Three stars because it was good but not amazing. Curious to read book 2!

This mild but cute slice-of-life middle school battle of wits will probably appeal to fans of My Neighbor Seki, Vol. 1. Each short chapter focuses on a new way for Takagi to tease her classmate Nishikata. There is gentle humor and hints of innocent romance as Nishikata is angered and embarrassed by by his failure to ever come out on top and confused by the other feelings he has stirring inside.

Welp. Not bad for my first manga. Boyfriend read and watched it, highly recommended it. And what kind of (bookworm) girlfriend would I be if I didn't comply?!

Anyways. Cute couple. Love how the girl is seemingly always 9 steps ahead. The guy's relative immaturity is starting to irritate me though. There's a contrast, and then there's a contrast that's just SO contrasting that it goes off the scale, and at that point....it starts to be ehhhhhh.

Overall: decent. Will be continuing the series.

I was looking for something easy to read in Japanese, and in that regard, I think this is indeed a good manga for beginners. It was enjoyable to be able to follow the story without struggling too much and I do think I have learned some useful vocabulary thanks to the slice-of-life setting.
However I found the dynamic between the main characters pretty boring and Nishikata is absolutely insufferable (mostly because he is incredibly dumb).

3.5 stars. It’s pretty charming and it got a lot better by the end of the book (the last chapter has a particularly sweet and unexpected conclusion). Unlike the other relentless harassment of a male protagonist by a female lead manga I read recently, this one definitely has a softer touch (although this one could stand to deviate from its pattern a bit more).
