Eternal Academy #1

A Witch’s Beating Heart

Rate this book
Mirror, mirror on the wall... Lose yourself in this New Adult academy urban fantasy loosely inspired by Snow White by an author Karen Chance calls "brilliant"... My twin Misty and I may have been brought up poor witch trash in the Gloaming's only trailer park, but our magic is strong as hell and we plan to take this shadow realm by storm now that we've graduated high school. We think our dreams have come true the day an engraved invitation to Eternal Academy arrives. The truth is that we've never been in more danger... We knew we were adopted but are in for a shock when our parents reveal the handwritten note they confiscated just before we got our invitation. It's addressed to two witches who are supposed to be dead. Someone knows the deadly truth our adoptive parents thought they'd kept hidden. The Witch Queen tried to have us killed when we were toddlers, and our adoptive aunt sacrificed her life to convince the evil queen that the pig hearts the assassin delivers are ours. Nobody says no to an Eternal Academy education, and nobody's ever crossed the Witch Queen and lived to tell the tale. If the truth reaches our royal adversary, academy bullies and impossible finals will be the least of our worries. We could lose our hearts for real--and not to classmate crushes. ***Note from This is a New Adult academy urban fantasy book featuring a slow-burn romantic subplot suitable for readers 18+. It is inspired by--but not a direct retelling of--Snow White. It features witches, mages, necromancers, reapers, vampires, shifters, and of course--Zane freaking Anders. If you love books by Jaymin Eve, K.F. Breene, Linsey Hall, Kim Harrison, Yasmine Galenorn, Dannika Dark, and Hailey Edwards, chances are you will love this book!

Kasey Mackenzie lives with her husband and son in St. Louis, Missouri; home of the Gateway Arch, the baseball Cardinals, and the world’s greatest thin-crust pizza. Kasey was one of those students who always had her nose in a book—so no big surprise when she was voted “Teacher’s Pet” in her high school yearbook. Today, she is a voracious reader of fantasy, romance, suspense, and “soft” science fiction. She adores her German shepherd puppy, two cats, playing softball, and has recently taken up knitting. So far she can cast on, do the knit stitch, and cast off. Hey, it’s a start!

As I’ve said before YA is not my favorite genre, and TBH, I’m not sure I’m liking the new trend of academy books. However, when an author I like writes one, I’ll give it a try. This was a great one. I like the main character who doesn’t seem immature, I like her sister, and I’m intrigued by the other characters; I think some of the secondary characters may not be who they seem. All in all, I’m really intrigued by this first book and want to see what will happen next. I highly recommend this book! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.

*** I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.***

This is a GREAT Academy book to start this series off. You get a small back story of the twins Crystal and Misty who are Witches. What a back story it is! (However it only gives you what you need to know which keeps you reading.) So Eternal Academy is a supernatural university, and a prestigious one at that, and happens to be the the school the twins go to. Certain things are revealed to Crystal and Misty and now have to be careful of what they do. They are given warnings to be careful with who to trust while going to school. Also you meet Zane Freaking Anders, who just so happens to be Crystals' crush. New friendships are starting to form, and Crystal and Misty are trying to get a handle on campus life. Everything seems to be going well but you just can't help but feel like something is about to happen. Then all of a sudden Crystal is being summoned to complete a challenge. What a challenge it is! That was just crazy and intense. This book was easy to follow and a great set up for the next book. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Misty and Crystal Gibbs are surprised and delighted to have been awarded full-ride scholarships covering everything from tuition and books to room and board, at the prestigious Eternal Academy. Then they find they are actually Mellora and Cressida Gallanos, are the Royal Heirs, have been hidden since infancy behind magic charms from their stepmother and/or the Wrathful One who want them dead. The current Crown Princess, Penelope, is their half-sister. They live in the Gloaming, which exists in the supernatural spaces between the Eternal, Infernal, and Mortal Realms. Their real-life story is amazing, and they find it hard to believe. The Eternal Academy is more than they expected, and Crystal's high school crush is also a student. Romance seems to be kindled, judging from Crystal's raging hormones and Zane's smoldering look. The magic grows very intense as threats to Misty and Crystal climax in a cliff-hanger ending, so have Book 2 ready to read.

ONE FREAKING FANTASTIC THRILL!!!
Ah crap! One impressive storyline and gripping plot rocks this baby from the git-go. A multitude of hapless surprises and a slew of daunting events that shake you to the core. Kasey's take no prisoners attitude propels this little threat bursting to life beautifully. A spiraling emotions burst forward that shakes you to the core. All the trials and tribulations along with it's throng of mishaps fuse this baby together spectacularly. Throw in the confusing drama, perilous events and you have one electrifying treat. The characters are authentic and realistic with such depth and originality its easy to relate. The scenes are written with such realism theres no trouble interpreting each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Remarkable job Kasey, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

A Witch's Beating Heart, Book One in the Eternal Academy, is simply put, Magical !
I received a copy of this in e-book return for a fair and honest review .
Fraternal twins Misty and Crystal ~ both witches graduating from Gloaming High, receive a full boat scholarship , much to their amazement , to the Eternal Academy ~ the most prestigious Witch college around.
It's not that easy , though... their parents tell them that they are adopted, and must hide their identity from the Witch Queen and her minions, who believe the twins are dead.
Who can they trust? Who are their friends, and their enemies?
If you like Witches, goddesses, and all kinds of magical mayhem, you'll love this book ! Plus, Zane Freaking Anders !

Delightful introduction to the series. Many wonderful characters are introduced along with several of questionable status. The story was easy to read and yet still contains elements of intrigue. There were points along the way which brought forth heartfelt tears. I look forward to what follows.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Informative. Romantic. Tear-jerker. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

I received a copy of this book as a gift.  This is my honest review.

Crystal and Misty are the stars of this newest academy themed fantasy! These fraternal twins harbor a h-u-g-e secret that will mean their death if the Witch Queen ever finds out. Eternal Academy is where they will learn to protect themselves and wield the powers that they will soon inherit. A really enticing start for this exciting young adult series with a sweet romance brewing between Crystal and her high school crush, now fellow college student Zane freaking Anders! Nice, nice, nice!!!

I started reading this book because of a video game.

Overwatch, to be exact. Kasey and I have friends in common, and while she was healing me as Mercy, she told me she was a writer.

So I picked up one of her books!

Now I'm going to read the next one.

This book is a lot of fun to read. While the situation is not particularly unique, the characters are well-written, and the dialogue captures their personality. The plot skips briskly along, and drew me along with it. And the book sets the stage for the next one perfectly.

I'm going to pick up the next one right now!

Misty and Crystal come of age and their powers are off the charts. They are accepted into Eternal Academy. Then they find out that the queen has wanted them dead since they were born. They don’t know who they can trust as they trudge through the dangerous day to day life of new exciting adventures they now lead.

A story of two girls that were once nobodies, but are now finding out that magical fairy tale thing, yep it’s them. But it’s really not all that much fun when they want you dead.....

The girls are enduring, their view on the High school hierarchy dead on, & their tribe...they’re the bomb. Now if they can just stay alive long enough to become super witches and kill the evil old hag.....while attending college, first time away from home, a lot of firsts. A fun ride

Crystal and Misty

Yes girl yes! All the intrigue, suspense, and mystery you could want in this witchy para. Crystal and Misty have a lot to learn and not much time to figure it out. It's a twisted tale that is a little reminiscent of Snow White and I enjoyed it very much. Definitely be back for book two.

I love these Twins. When these adopted twins Misty and Crystal get an invitation to attend Eternal Academy and find out they are witches, they take this opportunity to find out about their real parents and where they come from. What follows their entrance is magic and mayhem.

I found this predictable, and the inner dialogue of the mc was too mature for her age. Other than that, I'm sure it is an entertaining read. It was just not the right book for me.

What an amazingly fun new series. This first book, A Witch’s Beating Heart, is full of excitement, laughs, secrets, danger, revelations, new love, magic, school bullies…you know, everything you need to start a new school.

Dreams come true for fraternal twins, Misty and Crystal, when they receive invitations to attend the Eternal Academy. Coming from a poor background they are both elated and nervous to be accepted into such a prestigious school. When the announcement is made to their adoptive parents, emotions spin out of control when shocking secrets are revealed about their youth involving betrayal, death, and stunning revelations about their birth parents and their true heritage. Attending this school is a must, for no one says no to an invitation, but when they arrive they have much more pressing concerns than classes. Someone knows their true identity and the fact they are supposed to be dead and time is running out before all will be revealed and the Witch Queen will try again.

New friends, new crushes, entertaining familiars, secret notes, a mysterious benefactor, disturbing dreams, and magic and mayhem await them both at their new school. Knowing they cannot truly trust anyone but each other things are about to get interesting as they try to fit in to their new environment. And just when things are starting to feel normal and the twins are falling into the rhythm of the school, a shocking twist is revealed that can change everything they have been told.

This story is well-written, engaging from the first page, the characters are captivating and the plot is intense, mysterious, gripping and full of twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. This first book is an awesome start to a fun new world and I am looking forward to more in this series and to see what happens next for Misty and Crystal.
