Dark Purpose

Rate this book
"When the time comes, I know you'll be able to do what's necessary," she said before walking away. "Maybe that's what I'm afraid of," Freya whispered.

The Kade rule the Third Country through terror and unrelenting oppression. To the outside world, healer Freyanna Kuch is a member of the subjugated Pious class whose collaboration has seen her richly rewarded by the Kade. But Freya is a member of the Resistance. Her upstanding marriage, work, and conduct is a front as she works to create a better, more equal world.
However, the world of intrigue and shadows requires everything of a person. If Freya is to succeed in helping the Resistance, she must sort out her complicated feelings for Ashtyn, the man who brought her to the Resistance, and try to navigate the bloodthirsty demands of rebellion despite her obligation as a healer to do no harm.
As tensions rise across the Third Country, Freya must decide who she must be in order to fight for the world she wants, even if that means turning away from everything she holds dear.

Alice Jane Boer-Endacott was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, amid a home filled with books and cats. From her earliest days as a bored young child she has always used her imagination to escape the drudgery of reality by creating works of fiction. Her first manuscript was a gripping saga involving a ghost horse creatively named Ghost, written at the tender age of nine.

After procrastinating assignments during her Masters degree in Executive Management and Corporate Anthropology, and discovering that she had accidentally written three novels, in a not-so-shocking-twist, she decided to become an author.

Her first book, QUEENDOM OF THE SEVEN LAKES, was written at a time when she was playing Dragon Age Inquisition (and is thus living proof that computer games are socially valuable activities). Alice’s hobbies include eating, reading, writing, woodworking, and having deeply analytical discourses about contemporary media with her three cats.

Queendom of the Seven Lakes can be found at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077GTFNG6

Its sequel, King of the Seven Lakes, is available at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BB35CD3/

And the standalone novel (set in the same world), The Ruthless Land, is available at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DK57KX2/

So my friend wrote this book.
My friend is bloody brilliant.
And this review is not biased in anyway because my friend the author, would know that if I didn’t like this book, I would tell her. Because I never like to keep my opinion to myself and I do love to rant about a crappy book, but unfortunately after reading this book, I couldn’t find a damn thing to hate.
But this book was brilliant.
What I like about this book comes down to Alice’s writing. There is no plottering around with dull dialogue while she thinks of the plot, there is no beating around the bush with lack of character development and there is no fucking up the stars with shitty annoying characters. Alice gets straight to the point, so at no point in the book you find your mind wondering, you never find yourself bored, instead you get engrouced deeply in the plot and wondering if all your favourite characters are going to survive while you try not to pull your hair out in anticipation. It’s all very full on everyone.
Freya is trying to come to terms with what is happening and what is about to happen while remaining inconspicuous. Meanwhile the relationship between Freya and Ashtyn continues to develop, and isn’t easy.
AND THE ENDING. I lovvvved it. The very last line had me evil laughing in the darkness of my library and I need the next book. Do you think I can bribe an author for the ending with chocolate? Serious question though!!!
Overall, I have to say. You need to read this book or you might wake up with pipe cleaners as fingers …

Yet another amazing book from Alice, I’m so close to finishing off her entire published works with one book left after this one! Dark Purpose is the second book in what I’m calling the “Dark Trilogy” that follows a healer Freya, who is of the Pious faith which is banned in her country. As tensions rise across the Third Country, Freya must decide who she must be in order to fight for the world she wants, even if that means turning away from everything she holds dear.

After the abrupt ending to the first book I was so excited to delve back into this world and read about which direction Freya was going to go in this battle for power. Having read about her character in Queendom of the Seven Lakes I obviously know a little about where she ends up but following this story from before that time is incredibly interesting and Alice has written this uprising beautifully.

There are so many different intricacies which would go into planning an uprising and Alice manages to hit on them so well. We aren’t shown them all, as Freya isn’t involved in every aspect, but they are alluded to as well as having Freya mention certain aspects and this detail really adds depth and realism to these events.

Freya’s active participation in the uprising in this book is so much fun to read about, she has so many reservations whilst also guiltily revelling in her power. Something that I believe we would all do if given this gift! I also really enjoyed how her work at the hospital developed and played a key part in the story.

I wasn’t so keen on how Symon’s character developed in this book. This isn’t against Alice, just more that I really don’t want poor Freya to have to deal with this! I can already envision some of the basics of what’ll happen in Dark Heart (the next and final book in the trilogy) and noooooo!!!!

Have you read this series, or anything from A.B. Endacott for that matter? She is an amazing Australian, self-published author and I adore her writing so so much. I will read everything she ever publishes!

(Spoiler free. Basically just me fangirling and rambling absolute nonsense😅 So prepare yourself...)
"It was a choice she had made knowing what that entailed. But that didn't ease the weight which pulled at her conscience"p9
I have already told Alice that I need the next book ASAP. I absolutely loved this one.The number one reason being the main character Freya. Alice has written Freya in an incredible way that makes her so real and raw and relatable. Freya isn't just some heroine that is always right, doing the right thing, always in the spotlight, and getting her hands dirty happily. Yes, i see her as a heroine, but not a stereotypical one. She constantly questions what is right, why is she doing something?, can such actions be justified enough?, and so on, with every single thing she does (and even thinks). She still thinks about her own feelings and happiness too and what possibly lies ahead.
Ooookkkaayyy so enough of Freya for now. Every character in this novel ,and the one prior, are brilliantly written. Alice has managed to write a vast number of unique individuals, who all fit into this world (or city rather), and their causes, so beautifully and creatively, without taking away what makes them so unique.
Belief. Belief, or religion, however you like to term such things, play a major role in these novels. It's the driving force of the story (much like reality). Is it fair for one group of people who believe one thing, to be more superior to another group with a different belief? How can peace be made when such major differences divide the people of a city? I'll let you ponder that for a moment.
I am going to stop right there because I could ramble on and on forever. But I hope this convinces atleast someone to go and pick up an A B Endacott book, and support a talented indie author.

Three and a half ‘Lifesong’ stars 🐼🐼🐼🐼

‘Dark Purpose’ is the sequel to ‘Dark Intent’, a story about a conflicted healer and her fate in a hostile environment which is not only scary but also surprisingly appreciative of her gifts. It explores the struggles one can face when there are no white and black choices, just shades of grey.

The world setting is the same city as in the previous novel but explored further, providing a suitable backdrop to the difficult movements of the Resistance cast who sneak about, navigating the streets full of non-friendly Guardians.

I liked the plot of this book better than the first one, it is well organised and has all the good points of a thought-out novel. Plotting an uprising is really hard in my opinion and this is where this book shines.

The pacing is great – Ms Endacott nailed the stakes and the beats. I read this book a lot faster than the first one, curious to find out how things were going to go wrong next and how the characters were going to react.

On this topic, main character Freya in this book has finally turned into an active protagonist. She thinks, feels and makes decisions. The start was a bit jarring as I hadn’t realised she had already made the big decision to join the Resistance but after that was cleared out it was way easier to follow her intentions. She also has one awesome power!!

Other than that, I didn’t like how Makkyd and Symon were developed – I had hoped for different characters. But life is not always how we want it! Both were really consistent and well-place though. I get it with my mind why they are what they are but my heart was fighting it!

The writing style is similar to the first book. There is a lot of show as opposed to tell but I didn’t mind that much because the pacing was good, pulling the rather lengthy sentences at times into a good, coherent story.

I look forward to the next book.

The character growth in this book was fantastic. Freya becomes almost an entirely different person to who we first met, and I can see exactly why she does.

The relationship between Freya and her romantic interest is really well done, and the emotions the characters feel towards each other are so complex and yet easy to understand, as I really feel like I am in each characters shoes.

Looking forward to seeing how these characters continue to grow in book 3!

Alice has a way with words that is so captivating, it had me wanting to read more, it was hard to put down Dark Purpose when reading it, even at the end of the chapter. Alice describes things well without being unnecessarily descriptive. Alice continues to build the world and the characters in it. There is a few twists in the story and there is even an epic prison heist. I love the exploration of the two groups within the society and how one is rising up to make the world a better place. I feel Alice explores this well.

Freya is still struggling to come to terms with all that has happened and is happening. The relationship between Freya and Ashtyn continues to develop throughout the book. I like that their relationship hasn't been easy and that they have had to work for it. I liked Ashtyns character development in this book too, he is adorable at times and knows what to say and when to say it. They are probably one of my favourite character relationships, Chapter 19 is one of my favourite chapters.
Symon is a bit of an enigma in this one I felt, and I feel that there is something going on with him that he is not revealing. I loved all of the secondary characters that we get to see a bit more of in this book and what there role is within it all. We even see the arrival of some unexpected characters towards the end of the book, I am interested to see where that goes in the next book.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, I found the pace of it good not too fast but not to slow and it was consistent throughout. It is written from the one POV but it was written in such a way that didn't have me confused or feel like I was missing parts of the story, it flowed really well. It had my heart racing, it had me tearing up a bit and it even had me grinning like the Cheshire cat a few times. I am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

I swear the more of A.B. Endacott's books I read, the less I sleep! I had fifty pages to go and I was soooo tired but stopping at that point would have been criminal.

So here we are. Healer Freyanna Kuch is fighting mad. At the end of the first book, the fire of Resistance against the tyrannical Kade who rule the Third Country has been lit. She's training, she's smuggling supplies and she's keeping it all from everyone. Freya has also been honing her ability to heal wounds by tapping into a person's lifeforce. It feels like fun and games in training, but soon Freya has to make some pretty hard choices. Her whole life has been about saving people's lives, but now she's learning how to end them - and how to live with it.

Things are really heating up stakes-wise and I am here for it! You will feel the tension coursing along your veins as you travel with the Resistance through the city in the dead of night, you will be anxious as they enter their final stand, you won't be sure how this is going to go. And you will be so proud of Freya as you watch her character continue to grow.

It's been such a wonderful experience reading my way through The Godskissed Continent. There's one book to read after this and then the wait for the last book will feel super long!! But it will be so worth it in the end.

Another thoroughly enjoyable read from A.B. Endacott.

This story directly follows the cliff-hanger ending from Dark Intent and allows the reader to follow Freya as she entangles herself more deeply with the resistance movement and comes to terms with her position within it and what that may require from her.

There is a real sense of urgency to this narrative (which may explain why I wasn’t able to put it down until I’d finished it!), with the pacing of the story giving a sensation of particularly Freya’s inability to control the inexorable progress of events. While this does give the book a less introspective feel than Dark Intent, the story continues to explore the internal conflicts and nuanced moral judgements that I enjoyed in the first novel, with the nature of these quandaries continuing to evolve along with Freya’s character.

Looking forward to the conclusion!
