Yet, vows were exchanged and as far as Kitty is concerned, a promise is a promise. Luke Baxter promised to love her till death do him part and he’s not getting out of it.
The problems don’t stop there, however, as Luke disappeared from her life just weeks after their secret wedding, and Kitty never saw him again.
Until now.
Hopes reignited … When Luke appears out of the blue at the Earl of St Clair’s summer house party and announces his betrothal to lovely heiress, Lady Francis Grantham, Kitty is stunned …
… and honour bound to point out the problem.
One determined heart … All hell breaks loose when Kitty threatens to sue for breach of promise and she has a matter to days to convince Luke that his childhood sweetheart is worth more than Miss Grantham’s fortune.

A short, intensely romantic tale for anyone who has ever fallen in love with books… and perhaps with something not entirely of this world.
Although I have read other books by this author, I have not read the preceding books in this series. There are a lot of characters. Why do we need to be in be inside the heads of each of these characters? The constantly changing point of views is very confusing, especially when it took me half the book to remember who's who.
The main couple, Luke and Kitty, fell in love as children while in Ireland but were then parted, when Luke was abruptly taken to England by his titled uncle to groom him to be the heir of said uncle's earldom. They continue to pine for one another so that upon their meeting at a house party 10 years later, the affection and attraction quickly flare up between them as if not a day has passed. Except, Luke is as good as promised to a duke's daughter and he dares not provoke the ire of the current earl aka his uncle, who has been keeping Luke under his thumb for years by threatening to ruin Kitty and her family if Luke so much as tries to contact her. Problem is that Kitty is not your typically meek, English aristocratic girl. She's Irish for one and the daughter of a merchant. She's not going to let Luke disappear again now that she has finally found him after years of searching.
This book didn't work on so many levels. The multiple POVs is very confusing and takes away the focus from the main couple, leaving their story holey and lacking. Maybe the author felt the need to utilise this style of storytelling because the two protagonists are so weak and insipid that they alone can't hold the reader's attention. The premise is flimsy. How can 12-13 year olds declare undying love for one another? Why does Kitty think that the vows they made at that age were legally binding? Why was Kitty so annoying with her immature antics? Why was Luke such a wimpy, unimaginative character? What was the point of the letters at the start of each chapter as they often had absolutely nothing to do with the events of the chapter?
I don't think this book is intended to be read as a standalone book, not just because of the multitude of characters invading the book and stealing half of the attention if not more from the main couple. The ending is incomplete and although the protagonists obtained their happily ever, it is still a cliff-hanger ending because other conflicts have not been resolved.
Will threatening vilains endanger a long lasting love?
I’m reading this series since its beginning and I might say it is getting better and better. Mrs Emma V Leech crafts lively, full of humor and fleshy characters tales, once you’re in, you can do nothing than turn page after page.
« She had no intention of catching herself an English husband. She already had one. She’d just… temporarily misplaced him. »
Kitty is such a delight to see evolve, sure she is impulsive and reckless but she stands for those she cares for. For years, she has waited to see again her childhood sweetheart and now she has found him again, she won’t let blackmailers have their way, she steels her bones and stands head held high. Luke is a kind and caring man on the quiet side, he is not dauntless like Kitty, as she has boldness for two. And he would do anything for her even sacrifice his happiness to ensure she is left safe. What I love about this series, it is a love story but also a tribute to friendship, how persons come to care for others and make their mission to ensure they are well and protected. Sure, the romance is the main plot but in mingles the other girls stories, with insight from some of them or the other party. Maybe I will be wrong, but I do think Mathilda’s tale will be the last in this series, as she is the one to mother this bunch of unruly women. And despite all her struggles, the shadowy presence of the Marquess of Montagu is still looming over her in spite of his absence from this book.
« Dear Lucia, How I miss you, my dear friend. I feel like the mother hen you once compared me to… and all my chicks are determined to get eaten by foxes! ―Excerpt of a letter from Miss Matilda Hunt to Lady Aashini Cavendish. »
I do loved too Jasper, out of Luke, he was the hero of the day, my heart arched for him. He made a mistake he is unaware about, it destroyed his building romance with Harriet and since he is paying a high prize. Why I am not sure about Harriet, as for the moment she is very much a grudge-holder, as Mrs Leech didn’t let her be voiced, I do wonder about what. But if she handles the matter as much as the revenge plot of Lucia in book 3, I am game. And I only have a few more weeks before having my answers.
Once again, some might look on this review as a spoiler, so I will mark it so. Book 4 of the Girls Who Dare Series opens a bit differently than the first three. This time it opens with a 10-year backward look into the main characters' past to show how they met and what has led them, at least one of them, to where they are now. The author doesn't reveal in the prologue what happened to make our intrepid Hero, Luke Baxter, disappear all those years ago. Therefore, the reader can assume the mystery and intrigue of Book 5 will be where he went, why he had to leave, and what he has been doing since he last saw our Heroine, Kitty Connolly. She is an Irish lass whose father made his fortune in trade, thus causing the ton to look down upon her and making her a member of the Peculiar Ladies' Book Club. Once again (and probably this will continue to occur until we reach the last book in the series), the author has thrown in hints of other romances into the mixture of our Hero's and Heroine's struggle to be together. I fear, out of all the books so far, this book had a good deal more angst. According to the blurb provided, our Hero "appears out of the blue at the Earl of St Clair’s summer house party " and announced his engagement to another woman. I felt as if this was a forewarning of an emotional battle yet to come (thankfully, this book is a few chapters shorter than the first 3 so, hopefully, the angst doesn't last too long). Upon the first real introduction to our, to this point, absent Hero, we begin to find out the reason for his disappearance all those years ago. The true angst began at that point, with each new revelation the author pointed out. Just reading the words of what had brought about the separation made this reader want to skip to the ending and avoid the horrible drama to come. All hell broke loose once our brave Heroine realized the man she had loved since childhood was finally standing in front of her. The angst did, indeed, begin to rage, and not just with our main couple. It filtered down to many of the guests of the house party. For a while, I started to detest the Hero. I suppose that's normal after reading about the Heroine in the three previous books and only just now being introduced to him. I hated what he was doing to Kitty, but I also hated what was happening to him. There are just some people in this world you can never truly like, and that goes without saying for several people (I won't name them. You'll just have to find out for yourself) in this book that brings those feelings to the surface. Because of the circumstances our Hero and Heroine found themselves in, it brought out some of the most heinous people imaginable. The saying, "the path to true love never runs smooth," was never more put to the test than it was with our Hero and Heroine. The things they had to endure to find their happiness was beyond the pale, but I'm guessing it was so very worth it in the end. The HEA was well worth the wait, and this book definitely merits the Keeper for the Shelves award from this reader.

I love this series and have been really invested in the characters since the beginning and I am always counting the days until the next book is released. When the 10 wallflowers decided that they wanted to search for their dreams but they needed the courage to begin their quests. Each one wrote a dare and put it in a hat - now each one of them will draw a dare from the hat and complete the challenge.
Luke and Kitty are the main characters in this book #4 but the characters from previous and future books are also part of the cast, making it such fun and you really do feel like you are part of the group. Luke and Kitty had a friendship when they were young and promised they would love and marry one day - then they were separated when 2 evil men took Luke away and started grooming him for the title he would inherit one day. Luke could never escape and finally accepted he would never see Kitty again but Kitty never gave up on how much she loved him and they were meant to be together; even after ten years.
When Luke attends a house party at St. Clair's to announce the betrothal between him and a duke's daughter; he is shocked to see Kitty in attendance also. Will they find the love they had as youngsters, or has the training for his title changed him, will the rules of society force the marriage to the duke's daughter? I highly recommend this series to all historical romance readers. Emma Leech keeps you turning pages until the very end!
As I have said in earlier reviews, I am enjoying this writer's books immensely! This one falters a bit with the story. Kitty has loved Luke since she was a child and they 'betrothed' themselves to each other. However, when Kitty was 11, Luke disappeared and she never heard from him again. Her family wants to marry, but she can't since she already feels she is married to Luke. Then, at St. Clair's house party, Luke shows up with his soon-to-be-intended bride. Luke was ripped from his house and forced to be groomed to the next family heir. If he refused, his benefactors would ruin Kitty and her family. Now reunited, Luke finds his backbone and the duo fight back to get their happily ever after. Kitty seems a little one dimensional, her only thoughts through the series were about Luke. I wish there was a little more depth to her. Harry and St. Clair are still at odds in this book and Matilda tries to allow Mr. Burton a chance to court her. In the previous books, he seemed to be an affable person, but in this one, he shows a more possessive side. The whole time, I kept waiting for Montagu to show up at the house party, but alas, it was not to be....
Kitty is an absolute delight. She has fallen in love with Luke a long time ago and will do anything to see him again. Luke on the other hand, the last surviving heir of the nasty and spiteful earl of Trevick and his brother (who couldn't produce a male heir) terrorise Luke to behave in the exactly the same manner as them. They do so by threatening Kitty's family and Kitty herself, believing the Irish-born heroine to be a lowly creature that must be avoided by Luke at all costs. Instead, they insist that he marries a titled horrid lady in an arranged match to add to Earl of Trevick's coffers.
I liked that Luke, despite his experiences remains a kind person, despite being terrified into following the rules of two horrid old men. I also love how Kitty cuts across a lot of Luke's objections, despite her yearnings for Luke, she is a practical person and convinces Luke to do what he feels is right rather than carry on doing things that make him miserable.
You cannot help but be swept up by Kitty and her enthusiasm and love and practicality. Whilst the blurb implies a flighty heroine pining for a childhood idol, the book shows a young woman in love with someone who is worth fighting for. One of the best in the series.
The series just gets better and better. When I first read the premise of the book I did not like it but once again Emma V Leech surpassed my expectations. I loved Kitty and Luke, he was a reserved man and it perfect for Kitty. I didn't give this book 5 stars because it bothered me a bit that he was not a virgin. I know some may say oh but he had lost hope of never seeing Kitty again and that he is a man and has needs but women have needs too and if he was that depressed why could it have been written that he was a virgin, it's not a far stretch. Anyways like I said it bothered me but overall it was a good book and well the series just keeps building more anticipation. I'm super excited for the next book I wish it would come out next month and hopefully Jasper won't be such a whoremonger as his reputation seems to paint him. I won't rant again and instead will wait for the next book before I judge more.
To Follow Her Heart is the 4th book in the Girls who Dare series, you can read them out of order (I started it that way) but I'm slowly finding out, it's better to read in order so you get the back stories. I read the 5th book already so all the scenes with Jasper and Harriet were lack luster (because I know their story).
Anyhow, the 4th book is about Kitty and Luke. I thought Luke would be a passive character, but he isn't. The thing I do like about this series is that it's less angsty and I'm happy that Luke and Kitty were honest with each other throughout the read.
Even though the book is focused mostly on Kitty and Luke, you get a lot of back story of Jasper and Harriet, if you haven't read book 5, you should.
I thought the relationship between Kitty and Luke was very sweet, were they outshined by the other couples? At times, but overall I enjoyed reading about their dynamics.
This series continues to impress, I love all the characters. Feels almost like a regency tv soap opera.
There are lots of characters and this must be read in order. I personally don’t love that because I can’t skip to the stories I’m most excited about but each book so far has been great fun. I gave four stars because this one’s main characters story felt rushed and more like the conclusion to their story versus their actual love story. It also has a lot more side characters stories playing out, why I strongly warn it must be read in order.
Light steam, all books seem to have one romantic scene following marriage and is more romantic than erotic.
HEA: Yes Steam: Yes, 1/5* heat Cliffhanger: No… but there’s so many side storylines that’s it’s also a yes.
This did not begin well. Blah blah blah Kitty has dark hair always coming out of its pins and is always getting into mildly scandalous pranks. Luke is the straight-laced heir of an earl. They were childhood besties but haven't seen each other in years, then accidentally meet at a house party where Luke is supposed to propose to a stuck up duke's daughter. That whole plot is so trite I almost feel asleep recapping it, let alone reading it. But the side characters have a bit more flavor to them, and I liked seeing their romances develop (and to my surprise, none actually came to fruition in just this one book--many authors pack in more couples to pad a book out). And once Kitty and Luke get together, I actually grew to like their dynamic.
Kitty is such a vivacious and colorful character. I love her spark and her sheer joy in living. Luke is utterly besotted with her. On a morbid note though, his character seems prone to despair and hopelessness. If heaven forbid something ever happened to Kitty I don't think the man would be able to go on at all...if ever there was a man to die of heartbreak it's him. But it's so terribly romantic for a man to be so utterly devoted to a single woman. We should all be so lucky to find such a rare gem of a man. #goals!! This story is filled with adventure, drama and lots of steam.
Childhood Sweethearts Reunite In This Charming Story
Few stories about childhood sweethearts impress me as this one did. Luke and Kitty's young love was extraordinary. It spanned years and remained unchanged, even in each other's absence as they grew into adulthood. The fact that Kitty was the character dashing headlong into an adventure while Luke was the voice of reason was cute. Luke was noble, tenderhearted, and unfortunately naive. It's a good thing he had a champion like Kitty to rescue him. The multiple POVs and side stories were distracting, but overall it was a good read.
Loved the book! Kitty never gave up that the love of her life Luke Baxter will return yo her. He’s been gone got over a decade with no word! When she is invited to St. Clares house party she never would have guessed Luke would be there. Having been taken from his ho e when he was 13, Luke was kept away from everyone and everything he knew especially Kitty. When they come face to face they will do what is necessary to be together. A wonderful read and a great ending.
Once again, the storyline had great potential but chose to be repetitive in dialog and then completely veer away from the practically inevitable conflict. I love a H.E. just like anyone else, but come on! The characters keep us interested, we just need a little more complexity to the stories: and the setups are all there, they just need to be allowed to happen. Aaaand yes, despite my whining I am hooked so i'm moving on to the next book in the series. I'm too invested in some of these girls now to walk away.
Separated when they were only eleven and thirteen years old, Kitty and Luke haven't seen each other for years, after Luke just disappeared. They loved each other as children and neither understood what had happened. Like just knew he'd been taken somewhere far from home and had been allowed no connection to his past.
Just imagine being pulled away from your best friend and confidant, even your young love. Its a fantastic way to begin a novel that will draw you in and not let you go until the tale is fully told!
out of the entire series thus far, this one had me in a chokehold. i could NOT put down the book whatsoever- hence why i finished so quickly. i do understand how many people aren’t a fan of Luke. he’s not the typical male lead we’ve seen so far, but i feel as if it’s such a beautiful trope and example of when a man adores and loves you more than you could ever love him. sounds silly, i know, but it makes for a wonderful story. they fill each other’s gaps and balance each others’ personalities quite well. excited to see what the future books in the series hold if this one was this AHHHH!
I like the previous stories of Prue, Alice, And Lucia better. The hero in this book Luke is a bit too spineless for my taste even when he defending Kitty’s honor. I just felt like this childhood love was quickly put together I didn’t feel it as strongly. And still we are teased as to what will become of Matilda. On to the next book since clearly I’m begrudgingly invested.
To be honest I wasn't really excited to read Kitty's story. However I've enjoyed the series so much I felt I really couldn't skip it. I've never been a big fan of second chance romances. The story wasn't that at all.I was in the Luke and Kitty cheering section in a heartbeat. I love the roles that the secondary characters play.Everybody was a part of this story and it was fantastic. Great job!
What an absolute best ever story!! I laughed and cried and talked to the characters all through the book. It’s the best story about two young loves that get separated by his evil family members, thwarting their attempts to find each other at every turn and actually resorting to blackmail to keep them apart!! But love wins in the end and what a rollicking story we are taken on the way! A DEFINITE MUST READ!!
Emma Leech has done it again. Another wonderful book in this series. Kitty and Luke's story had me from the first page, and kept me hooked until the last page. What a beautiful story showing us we never give up on love. Keep up the great work and can't wait for the next installment.
I dare you not to enjoy the series this one is full of fun because ,,in fact , kitty is. One of the most fascinating things about these books is the way the reader becomes one with both the gang and the Jerome of the story. How can one not enjoy such a magical tale?
The heart can't hide what it feels, you can see it in there eyes This is a heart wrenching love story that will grip you at every page You will fall in love with these characters, and feel there pain Young Kitty will fight for the one man she,s always loved . Thank you ❤
I absolutely loved this story from beginning to end I simply enjoyed reading it since the beginning, that I couldn't put it down until I was done. Full of adventure, funny, sad, exciting, romantic and unexpected turns. I definitly recommend reading it, excellent read!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's well written and entertaining, the story-line is well-paced with off the charts chemistry between Kitty and Luke. I read through the book without a break up to the end.
So, go ahead, grab this book, grab a cup of coffee and let the story give You a relaxed reading time.
I truly enjoyed this book, it’s a great and romantic read. I have read every book in this series so far & I have enjoyed how much the characters challenge what was truly considered “acceptable” for their time period. Marrying for love was almost unheard of, but each character has managed to work around the unwritten rules of their society & find her perfect match
This is another great example of how to tell a beautiful story
This book is yet another example of how to tell a beautifully written story. The plot is full of emotional passages and intrigue. The characters are strong and portrayed wonderfully. This is a book that would suit all those who love spicy historical romances with plenty of suspense.
Kitty was annoying as hell. This book didn't live up to the others in the series. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good. I really like all the more rounded out characters in this series. It seems that most HR these days have about 4 characters and only two of them actually have a personality unless there some quirky old grandmother.
