This book had the potential to become one of the best novels in this series, but ended up squandering the opportunity. The basic plot—ghosts in a fire station—was fine and pretty much what we’ve come to expect from the series. The team is called in to investigate paranormal activity, have a couple of encounters with ghosts, and finally figure everything out. It was even touching at the end. But it was the subplots that offered the chance to turn this into an extraordinary novel, so let me take a moment to talk about them.
First, Midas, team founder, is not dealing well with the death of a teammate in the last book. He drops out of contact with his team and his girlfriend, Cassidy, and then disappears with an ex-girlfriend to return to the Leaf Academy where his teammate died. This move on his part was stupid on so many levels, but totally believable. And it sets the stage for a great adventure reminiscent of the beginning of the series. Midas is driven by guilt to face the Maelstrom again and goading him on is his self-absorbed ex-girlfriend who is looking for ratings for her new paranormal show. Not only does it give at least the appearance of cheating, we’ve seen in book after book that when the emotional state of the investigators is messed up, it impacts the investigation. This would have been a great story, worthy of a novel itself, but it all happens off screen and ends up being a great big dud.
Second, Sierra’s mother-in-law, who has hated her from book one and totally disrespects her interest in the supernatural is now having a supernatural problem of her own. This may be the focus of a future novel. It’s set up nicely here, but again, at least for now, nothing happens with it.
This is a good series and I hate to see moments lost that could make it great.
I really liked this story. I read it in a day! I missed Midas, but again, it was nice to see Sierra shine. I am so curious about Sierra's mother-in-law and her haunt... but the book was really good. I did practice my proofreading skills and found quite a bit of things - M. L. Bullock- if you need some assistance, I am YOUR girl! I have read ALMOST all of your books! JS Anyways, the emotions were there. I felt so sad for Cassidy...and knowing the Sara was with Midas added another layer. I want to know WHAT happened to SARA too. Great story. Can't wait until OCTOBER for the next story! I really love the Gulf Coast team!!!
I can't really put into words what I thought about this book other than it was just okay. It wasn't exciting. It was a little too Sierra -centric & she kind of annoys me when she's featured so prominently. It was missing Midas - yet still had that annoying first & last name usage that real people don't do. There wasn't anything about the book that stands out. It was just okay.
I love this series! The characters are so easy to connect with and the plot pulled me in from the beginning. It was interesting that one of the main characters didn't make an appearance until the end. I enjoy everything that M.L. Bullock writes and highly recommend her work!
I love these books but this one seemed to have a lot more grammatical and word confusion in it. I saw a lot of places where her was used when it should have been him, and just some confusion. The content is great though and I will keep reading these stories.
This was definitely one of the sadder installments to the series, both, the grief for their lost team member and the reason behind the haunting at the fire station. I am glad it had a happier ending than the last book.
I just finished book 12 of the Gulf Coast Paranormal series& it was so good but a tad bit sad,I'm going to anxiously wait for book 13 !or at least try to. I've enjoyed all of the paranormal stories by this author & highly recommend them.
Well written, good plot and setting. I felt that there was something missing though. Still, I recommend this author as an imaginative and creative writer.
I do enjoy this series very much. Lots of ghosts! I try to read each book in one sitting. I'm definitely going to be reading more of the series by this author.
You know a series is amazing when you don't want it to come to a end. That is this series. This takes place at a firehouse, can the team work together with out Midas?
