Tom Roberts has been aware from childhood that mysterious events once occurred at his grandfather's remote country house, but has no idea of exactly what happened there. Years later, when he spends a short break at the property, the horrifying past comes vividly to life, as ghosts rise from their graves to reveal deeply buried family secrets.
I worked 30 years in journalism and later pursued a career in acting. I've always loved writing, and have scripted audio dramas as well as short film screenplays. My favourite genres in reading are a mix of supernatural, historical fiction/nonfiction, thrillers and mysteries. My main book writing genre is supernatural.
3.5 stars. This was a fine ghost story. Pretty standard fare, with no gigantic twists or surprises. Lots of visions and creepy ghost sightings, all foreshadowing some hidden family secrets. The thing that threw me off a bit here was the pacing. I just felt like the scene transitions were on a rapid fire tempo. And that took some of the necessary attention off the stronger parts of the story, ie Marcia/Roberts and the family confessions that oozed out towards the latter parts of the book. And the story was already on the shorter side, but turned out to be about fifteen pages less than what I originally took note of. For majority of haunting/ghost-based stories, a hundred pages is very tough to have a really good, complete story. This came close, but left a bit to be desired. I did enjoy this, but it just needed to be a little longer with some additional development on the characters and plot.
And what an evil ghost it is indeed. All murderous and things. I mean, yes, the title is silly, but the story itself is actually quite decent. Very much on par with the author’s other writing, but from the upper echelons of it. Sleight’s scares generally tend to be on the quieter milder side of things, there’s a certain sedate quality to his thrills, which doesn’t always work for me, but in this instance it was ok. The plot is fairly straight forward. After WWII, a man comes to visit an ancestral abode and uncovers family secrets through ghostly visitations. That’s all familiar. The difference is the setting. This story is set in the 1940s, which is perfectly congruous with the author’s style. It ends up reading like one of the golden age gothic stories or something of that nature, evil ghosts and all. Overall, fun enough and a very one sitting quick read.
If you are looking for a good, suspenseful ghost story this is one for you! I loved it. And this narrator's voice just amped it up. He told the story perfectly and I was hooked from the beginning. This author knows what a good haunting story is. Tom's grandfather's country home always had secrets. The family seemed to keep them. Tom ends up staying on the property. He starts to see a ghost of girl. Slowly he starts to unravel the truth and it shocks him. I know I was shocked as each piece as it was all revealed. I was on the edge of my seat as I tried to solve the mystery along side Tom. This story proves secrets don't always stay buried. A must read for ghost story and haunting story fans!
This is a short (just under 2 1/2 hours) but interesting ghost story. Tom goes to visit his grandfather and begins to see the ghost of a not very nice young girl. During these apparitions he learns about the dark history of his family.
Although this is a short story it packs in plenty of action. It is set just after WW2 and is very evocative of the time. It is a well written, classic ghost story and although it's not particularly scary, I did have goosebumps at times whilst listening.
The narration by Howard J Davey brought the book to life.
If there’s such a thing as brilliantly creepy, then this book qualifies! The World War has just ended and British citizens are recovering. Tom has left London to visit his elderly grandfather in the country. Returning to the his father’s childhood home brings back a memory of an apparition in his room on one visit. As Tom settles in for his visit, he begins seeing visions from the past…and one very evil girl. Think The Bad Seed!! Another fast paced story that will keep you reading/listening!
Audible:Wow!What a story! A ghost appears to a boy, then again when he is a man. This is at his grandfathers home. When his Grandfather is taken ill and is comatose, ghosts inhabit the house to tell the familys evil secrets Maybe he should not have asked to know what happened in the past. Howard J. Davey was a very good narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
A well written, creepy and tense ghost story. Family secrets and a creepy decaying old house make for an atmospheric tale. Geoffrey Slight has an understated horror style relying on tension and emotion rather than gore. I liked the first person narrative and the characters. Howard Davey is an excellent narrator, easy to listen to and does the story justice. Highly recommended. I received a complimentary copy from the d am leaving a voluntary honest review
This is a very well written ghost story about a young man who returns from the war against the Nazis. He decides that with his grandfather getting quite old, to go spend time with him before starting his career. While there he meets the spector of a young girl, who wants to show him something. Narrator does a Great job with the characters and the Entire Storyline.
I thoroughly enjoyed the short eery tale of Emily's ghost. Its not the shock factor and doesn't have any jump scares but it encapsulated me from the beginning. I recommend this short tale for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Quite a good read. Rather short though, but since free on my Amazon Kindle plan that’s fine. Not too scary for those of you that are nervous 👻! Thank you Author.
I always start a horror book with some trepidation. Will it be too much for me? Will it be too scary or will the antagonists be too horrifying? Can I handle it? But by some quirk of nature I do enjoy a good ghost story! So I'm always willing to try I want to feel shivers run up my neck, without any jump scares! I found half of what I wanted. Emily's Evil Ghost is a pretty straight forward haunting, but unfortunately it didn't really give me any of the tingles that I had hoped for.
