The Chameleon Effect #2
Perfect Pitch
All Dean wants is to escape…
But he can’t leave his younger brother, Ty, in the care of their alcoholic mother. And when their abusive father shows up, Dean has to get Ty out. Which means joining Shri — his best and only friend — in taking a job out of state and breaking the law by stealing his brother away.
Cadi’s life is almost back together after Dean blew it into a million pieces. She’s come to terms with her life as a shape-shifter — well, almost. She’s still trying to wrap her head around the fact that a vicious enemy is out to destroy the remnants of her people.
As if Cadi doesn’t have enough to deal with, Dean’s about to land on her front doorstep, forcing her to decide whether to let him into her secret world or slam the door in his face.
The Chameleon Effect series, starring shape-shifter teens with extraordinary superpowers, is sure to appeal to Young Adult and New Adult readers who enjoy romance with a paranormal twist.

Alex Hayes
13 books103 followersAlex Hayes lives in a castle. Not one of those dark, damp ones in England (or Scotland, even) where it rains all the time, but a white one with the view of a volcano where it’s sunny 364 days out of the year.
She hosts four cats. One white queen. Two black knights. And a ginger jester, famed for her impressive backflips and pirouettes.
Alex is considering turning her castle into a cat sanctuary. It all depends on whether she can find a way to pay the food bills. (If you think she should, buy her books. The cats will thank you.)
When she isn’t writing, she's thinking about what to write next, while working on her tan. (Vitamin D rules.)
She’s a vegetarian (almost vegan) who believes in love not war, feminine power, and enjoys singing (usually quite badly).

At first glance, if it looks like a human and talks like a human, you wouldn’t generally assume that it would be anything other than human, right? Now, if you saw someone with an ability to do things that were unnatural or completely morphing into something with scales, what would you think then? Would you think that they were still human? Hayes will continue to entertain, mystify, and captivate readers in the second installment of The Chameleon Effect series.
Cadi is gone. The Jacobsens are gone. The only one who remains is Shri, his best friend. But, with high school graduation nearing, he can’t think about a future without knowing that his brother is safe. Shri gets a call from the Jacobsens with an offer to move up to where they now live and help out with building some cabins on their vast property. Putting in her notice with the farm seems easy. Everyone who she cares about is with the Jacobsens, but Dean. Urging Dean to consider making the move with her, she understands that he is battling with himself over the situation that he would be leaving behind. A drunken mother…and now an abusive father is back in the picture. He also feels like he would be intruding on Cadi after the way they left things before her departure. After one last stunt by his father, he takes his brother and Shri and heads to the cabins, happy to never look back. Upon their arrival, things seem very tense, which makes Dean determined to figure out Cadi’s new secrets. One being the new love of her life, Idris. The second, he is not really sure if he is ready to believe…inhuman? One thing is for certain though, he has never known friendship like the kind that he has with Shri and had with Cadi. He would do anything to make that happen again. There are many battles to be had before they can come together and put their feelings and past aside, but are they all willing to do that? Especially when new forces are trying to destroy Cadi’s race here on Earth?
Hayes has a gripping story, filled with creativity, originality and fascinating characters. This story is one that will grab the reader from the beginning and lure them further into a depth of adventure and magic. Hayes has well-developed characters that are captivating and likable. Also, the story is very well-written with little to no spelling or grammatical errors. One of the best aspects of this story is the learning curve that these characters have to face in order to survive. The strength that Hayes conveys regarding the desire to forge the Livran community on Earth is impeccable and perfect for a young adult audience. If you are a reader of young adult fantasy and paranormal fiction, you may want to pick up this second installment; however, since it is a direct continuation of the previous installment, it is recommended to read through the first book called Silken Scales prior to diving into this one.

I will say that I have read the first book and enjoyed it and really glad I was able to get the second book to see what happens. You could read as a standalone but it would be way better to read them in order as the characters carry over into this book. The story continues with Cadi and Idris and what happens after the first book. The author also brings back in two friends of Cadi’s from the first book but goes more in depth with them. I enjoyed the flow of the story and after I got reading did not want to stop. It is one of the stories that pulls you in and before you know it you are done. It kept moving at a good pace. I loved the world building. I don’t want to go into a lot of details as I am afraid I would give spoilers away. I did receive an ARC from Hidden Gems for an honest review. I do have to say when I requested it I had already read the first book so had an idea I would like this one too. I would recommend this author and will be looking for the next book that continues on with some character from this book and a couple new ones that were introduced.

Mix teenage angst and hormones, bad family life and alien kids and you’ve got a bizarre story to say the least. If you enjoy romance, science fiction and paranormal stories, then this one is up your alley. Although, it is the second in a series, I didn’t feel that I need to know what happened before to know the main characters as the author developed them here. It was a little slow at first and deals with the bad family life and teenage romance and infatuation. Toward the last quarter of the story, it jumps into the paranormal and science fiction part head on. It was an enjoyable read, but I just couldn’t get really into it.

A unique and intriguing sci-fi romance, Perfect Pitch by Alex Hayes will have readers engrossed and wildly entertained until the very end.
Idris and Cadi finally know who they really are and where they come from. They’re shapeshifting aliens with extraordinary powers who are bonded for life. After closing the wormhole and confessing to their foster parents, Idris and Cadi finally begin to feel at home. But, with their enemies relentlessly hunting their kind, Idris and Cadi will never be truly safe. Will they be prepared and strong enough to protect each other and save everyone they love from whatever danger that comes their way?
I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel and if I’m being honest, I actually like it way more than the first book. It is still a little weird, but that’s one of the things I love that about this series. I think the storyline is original, imaginative, enthralling and absolutely addictive. I really like the world-building, the writing is fantastic, the plot is fast-paced, and there are some amazing feels in this book. The characters are charming and loveable. Idris and Cadi are super adorable together and I’ll ship them forever. Their chemistry definitely becomes more intense and there are a few steamy scenes. I wasn’t too fond of Dean before, but he completely won me over. Ty and Pepper are just too cute and I’ll protect them till the end. Shri is fiesty and my kind of girl. I love Cadi’s foster parents and what they’re doing for her truly warmed my heart. Overall, I think this story is well-written and fabulous! I truly enjoyed going on this fun and wonderful sci-fi adventure and I totally can’t wait to read more from this series.
Packed with plenty action, humor, family conflict, relationship drama, heartwarming moments, and a swoony romance, Perfect Pitch by Alex Hayes had me glued to the pages. I really can’t rave about this enough so if you love sci-fi, fantasy, and romance, then I think you should definitely add this series on your TBR.

I think what I liked best about this is that it really teaches you not to make assumptions about people. In the first book, Dean accidentally reveals Cadi’s secret about being telekinetic and it’s easy to think that he’s a jerk for doing so, especially when it brings complete upheaval to her life. But in this book, we see what Dean is really going through. The chapters alternate between his story and Cadi’s (although Idris isn’t too far behind), and it is a nice blend of the extraordinary (the battle between the Livrans and the Everetons) and the mundane (Dean’s fight to protect his little brother from their neglectful/abusive parents).
We also get to know Cadi’s friend Shri a lot more in this book. Shri is awesome. Full stop.
Cadi and Idris are taking their relationship and bond to the next level and it is beautiful to see. They have a mission now, and Cadi’s foster parents are helping them. Idris does have some issues with Dean, now that he is back in Cadi’s life, but they are understandable given Cadi’s mixed feelings towards him, especially with how they ended things.
I really liked this continuation of the story. This is probably a middle book of a trilogy (or at least I think it is), and sometimes middle books can get bogged down. This one didn’t. It continued to be fast paced and interesting throughout, bringing in enough new characters to keep things exciting, while still focusing on the original characters we’ve grown to love.

Book two alternates between Cadi and Dean (Dean an ex friend, almost boyfriend, who sort of betrayed her and kinda outed her abilities in the first book) and is set about six months after the end of the first.
Cadi actually got on my nerves a bit in this second book. But I loved getting to see inside Dean’s head and getting to meet his little brother TY.
In this book Cadi’s pasts collide. Her past past, cue evil alien’s out to get her and Idris. And her more recent past, cue awkward and jealous moments between Dean and Idris.
The last quarter of the book is an action whirlwind with Dean’s broken family life coming to the front of the story, then all the main characters coming together just in time to kick some bad guy alien butt.
The Chameleon Effect series is not all romance and alien slaying, there are some deeper things dealt with; mental health, alcoholism, and parental abuse come to mind.
The human characters had racial diversity (and of course there was the two different races of aliens), so a BIG YAY for that. But there was no room in the plot for sexual diversity.
All in all I've liked both books from the series so far and I am keen to read the next one to see how Idris and Cadi manage to find the other hiding Livran teens. And I want to see Ty thriving in his new home!

This was a great read.
I am enjoying this series very much.
We have great world building in this.
Wonderful written characters that I can't wait to see where the author takes us next with.
Well written plot and story line that keeps you gripped.
I can't wait for the next one!

This is one of those series that defies genres. I agree with the marketing that this could be a great story for both YA and New Adult readers. But not only that, we jump between Contemporary, Paranormal, and Scifi worlds.
This does create a bit of confusion at first trying to create the right world for the characters, but I don't think it deterred too much from what was going on.
I really liked the character-building and the heritage the two main characters found themselves to have. If you are a fan of unique aliens, this book would be a great scifi twist to uncover while also having modern, contemporary elements.
Since this is the second book in the series, I don't want to go too in-depth of what happens. This one does follow a different set of characters, but I feel like you need to read Book 1 before diving into this one for all the background information.
I gave each of the books 3 out of 5 stars. A great genre-defying series full of aliens, shapeshifting, discovery, and a hint of romance.

I wish I’d read book one before jumping into Pitch Perfect, because this was such a fun book and I think I missed out on book one fun!
I really enjoyed the mix of NA and YA. I think for a PNR novel, this mix of classifications made for a really unique story. I loved the characters in this novel. They were really unique and relatable.
I said yes to this blog tour on a whim, and I am so glad I did. I intend to read book one asap, and I’m looking forward to reading more from Alex Hayes. Definitely check this one out, it’s a fun ride!

I got the opportunity to have an advanced copy of this book and I'm so glad I did. I devoured it in a day and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved Silken Scales because, as a musician, the idea of sound waves and perfect pitch as a "super power" is just too awesome to me. I love the characters of Idris and Cadi. Having this book focus more on the humans that support them was a really great shift of perspective. Alex Hayes approached manipulative relationships perfectly, I think. Dean's reactions to his mom were spot on and I love how she resolved it. I don't want to give too much away, but I am thrilled with potential of this universe that Alex has dreamed up for us.

I absolutely adored this book and didn't want it to be over when I got to the end. When I did get to the end, there was a definite and satisfying conclusion to the book, while still leaving things open to continue the series (I love series, but I dislike when a book ends without wrapping up the main plot point, and this book avoids that). I donate blood every two weeks and normally play a couple of games on my phone. Not today--I spent the time reading this book instead. I had no desire to quit reading in order to play games.

PERFECT PITCH BY ALEX HAYES
You know when you like a book so much, that is hard to find words to describe it ... that Pitch Perfect for me.
Pitch Perfect is such a moving story. I was all in from the start to the finish and I loved every page of it. It's one of those stories that touch your soul and stay with you, change you in play with your emotions.
And as the story progresses there is that paranormal aspect - my favorite. :)
Loved it!

This is the second book in this series. I was expecting to meet another Livran couple and hear their story, but this book goes into more depth about Cadi and Idris, and how they come to terms with all that’s going on. And believe me, there is a lot going on. I read this book in one day. You do get to meet Rowan, but not her mate. I’m looking forward to their story.

This was a fun sci fi read, there are some real life struggles the kids are going through brought up. There is also a lot of sexual tension, thankfully the author skips that scene but you do read lead up and after.

Chameleon Effect.
It's a series that I inexplicably enjoy, for why should I like Secular YA Romance.
If I had to make a complaint against this novel, it would be that Idris seems more two dimensional in this book.

This series seriously pulls you in and doesn't let go! Action-packed fight scenes, out-of-this-world characters (deliberate winky face) and a steady story line kept me reading until the last page. This has also been one of my favorite integrations of using a side character from book 1 into a main character for book 2 while keeping pace with the original main characters as well. The end might have been tied up a little *too* neatly for my taste but it didn't distract from the overall satisfaction of the book. I am almost scared to move onto a thrid book because I am not ready to possibly leave Cady and Idris behind.

In Perfect Pitch (The Chameleon Effect book2) by Alex Hayes, all Dean wants is to escape but he can't leave his younger brother in the care of their alcoholic mother. When the abusive father shows up Dean has to get him and his brother out. As if Cadi doesn't have enough to worry about without Dean showing up and her having to decide if to let him into her secret alien world or slam the door in his face. Love this book. I received this boxset of books 1-3 through bookfunnel but have decided to review all individually too. This book and the boxset are available on Amazon

Petty cute book. Good for a teen girl into fantasy with a little just leaving high school romance.

Opinions: In all honesty, I found this book to stretch the limits a little too far. Hayes attempted to find a new supernatural creature to twist up a teen romance, but I thought it was a little weird. The obsession with sexual tension and hormones due to being from another planet pushed the limits, and I didn't see the point of it. The supernatural element was a little cheesy and took away from a perfectly decent family and friend struggle. Perfect Pitch and the series had a lot of potential, it was just not a book for me. Examples:
“To paraphrase Jake’s notorious Facebook post, ‘A freaking alien bi*ch with superpowers.’” -Quote from Perfect Pitch and a general summary: "Perfect Pitch" describes the main character's ability to communicate with bears.
