After escaping a brutal marriage, Carrie Sullivan is left bound by her need for self preservation, which, amongst other things, means sex has become something her body performs while her mind is somewhere else. But despite feeling nothing, she moves from one sexual encounter to another in the desperate hope she will find the one who can somehow reawaken her. Just when she is starting to believe nothing will ever change, Carrie is sent on a routine trip for work, which she sees as a welcome break from her dull job, but as she boards the train for London, she has no idea just what awaits her. During her very first evening in the city, she finds herself unwittingly witnessing an explosive encounter involving American actress Vanessa Bonart, which ultimately brings these two women, from completely different worlds, together. This chance meeting, causes the emotional tide to turn , Carrie finally rediscovers her emotions, whereas Vanessa, who appears to the world as both supremely confident and sexually liberated is forced to face her long-hidden insecurities. Once home again, Carrie begins a relationship with new love ,Daniel, but is there too much unfinished in her past for her to ever really move on?
I was born in London and, from an early age, found every kind of book fascinating. I have travelled extensively, and I think this has fuelled my imagination, as I have been blessed with meeting so many interesting people and learned so much from them.
Despite appearances, I am an intensely private person and I believe, that's why I need to write, it allows me the freedom to explore emotions, without having to show too much of myself to the world.
For all that technology has to offer, I will always believe the best place to be is curled up somewhere and being lost in a really good book. I aspire to hopefully write one!
This is my first time reading this authors work and won’t be the last! Hidden Within is one of those books you don’t want to put down. I loved reading about Carrie - she’s very real, very flawed, she has baggage and issues and we are exposed to all of them in this story. Her relationship with her daughter is lovely, was a delight to read, scattered in amongst Carrie’s journey through an unsettling part of her life. She finds pain, she finds romance, she (like all of us) feels trapped at times and unsure which direction to take in life. An absorbing read, highly recommended.
