Heart of the Curiosity

Rate this book
The secret lies with the Heart.

Born with a magical knack for manipulating emotions, Leodora’s only dream is to ensure her talented little sister dances on the biggest, brightest stage in the Republic: The Curiosity, a grand old theater of tradition and innovation. After escaping a cruel carnival, Leo secures her sister a place in the Curiosity’s chorus line, and herself a job as a professional audience member, swaying the crowd’s mood with her magic. The girls have a home for the first time in their lives.

Then a tragic accident darkens the theater. A greedy businessman begins blackmailing Leo, and financial woes threaten to close the show forever. The Curiosity’s sole hope lies in a mythical power source hidden beneath the maze-like passages and trapdoors of the theater—the Heart. And Leo’s only friend Paxton, nephew of the theater’s stagemistress, is the key to finding it.

While Leo and Paxton hunt for the Heart, the blackmailer’s threats loom larger. Mysterious figures, cryptic clues, and deadly traps hinder the search at every turn. If the friends cannot recover the Heart in time, Leo and her sister will be cast out of the only home they’ve ever known, and the final curtain will fall on The Curiosity.

Enter a world reminiscent of The Greatest Showman, with a puzzle worthy of Sherlock Holmes and National Treasure, in this new Steampunk Fantasy from H. L. Burke.

Heart of the Curiosity is a delightful new steampunk novel from H.L. Burke, full of mystery and . . . well . . . heart (no pun intended).

Reading this book, I stepped right into a gorgeous setting with a steampunk flair. I absolutely loved the “feel”—it was almost black and white and red and bronze, on the edge of winter, a slightly Victorian but different setting, with a pinch of a reminder of Paris or London, but unique. Steampunk gadgetry and inventions pepper the story in a fun way, and the entire setting—theater, hidden passages, cobblestone streets, pastry shop, etc.—was so vivid.

The dash of fantasy was absolutely fascinating! I loved how everyone in this world has a “knack,” some slight magical skill that is specific to them. Leo, our heroine, has a knack for manipulating people’s emotions, and it was very interesting how that came into play in the story and how she struggles with it. Others have inventing knacks, or levitation, or a knack for baking, etc. I loved discovering those, and some of them were really intriguing talents! :D

The characters are the heart of the story, though, and I got really invested in their stories. ^_^ Leo is sturdy and loyal and surprisingly relatable, and her story felt unique. I loved her devotion to her little sister, Muse—who was a fun character in her own right. And then there’s Paxton, who is the NICEST CHARACTER OF EVER, more or less, the mechanic with a metal arm and a heart of gold. Paxton was basically the best, and he and Leo are so great together. I love the banter and the going-out-for-pastries (those pastries!), but also the deep friendships and being there for each other despite their secrets, and the spark of romance in a totally different way. Basically, I love them! And all of the side characters were vivid too; I especially liked Reid and he was in it far too little—he was fabulous. XD

The story had so many twists, and just when I thought I knew where it was going, there would be a new and delightful reveal. I loved it! Everything came together by the end. It’s a tale of secrets and a treasure hunt of sorts, with blackmail and hidden passages and puzzles and clues—all of which were so neat and fit together so well—and all on a quest to save the old theater, The Curiosity. It really is sort of like Sherlock Holmes meets National Treasure meets The Greatest Showman, like the blurb says.

I liked how although there are fascinating bits about the actual plays and dances (I particularly love how their fairy tales are close to ours but just a little tweaked—and aaahh, the lamppost story! I understood that reference. XD), the show business isn’t actually the main plot—it’s more about the mystery and about family and values and saving their home and way of life, and how art is important. I just loved that. And there’s the snail circus, of course. ;) Peril and mystery and shady characters, and friendship and love and humor, all blend together—and quite a few feels by the end.

At first it took me a little while to get into it but as it went on it drew me more and more in, especially the later parts—wow! I don’t know, it just makes me happy. ^_^

Also, pastries. SO many pastries! I need them in my life. This book made me so hungry. XD And I loved the library and wished we could have seen more of it, but it was also unique, in a sense, that it actually wasn’t about the library and that Muse was the bookish one instead of Leo.

A couple of grittier parts/tougher subjects (though well handled) might make it a better read for more mature readers, and I had one or two not-sure moments with the plot, but overall I loved it and it’s a great YA novel!

Definitely pick this one up if you need some mystery, love, steampunk, treasure hunts, delightful characters, and pastries in your life! ;)

I received a complimentary e-ARC of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This book is a delightful tale full of friendship and pastries.

This story is a Steampunk tale taking place in a theater with clockwork props. I mean you can't go wrong. The characters were darling. Paxton was by far my favorite, he was so sweet and yet wasn't afraid to sass anyone who messed with his family. Leo was extremely unique, she loves her sister and her Paxton and her pastries all equally fiercely. I was hungry all the time reading this book.

What the characters did to the bad guy though... 😮 I didn't know they had that in them.

It wasn't really much of a mystery. I mean you know who is behind everything the whole time I was surprised by how little of the book was spent in the tunnels under the Curiosity looking for the Heart. I would have thought that more of the book would have been centered around that. Still it was an enjoyable read and the puzzles were fun to think over.

Content:
There is some language. One of the main characters was raped in the past and it is brought up often.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, all opinions, however, are my own.

This novel may feature one of the most unique and detailed worlds that H.L. Burke has ever created...and considering the multiple rich universes she's crafted in her stories, that's saying something. Reading the book immerses you in a beautifully-realized alternative reality, and fully delivers on the striking cover's promise of enjoyable escapism. Though that's not to say the story is all fun and games--there's plenty of heart here as well (fitting, given the title), and various complex themes are dealt with in a sensitive and satisfying manner. I would gladly read more titles with this world and characters, but Heart of the Curiosity works perfectly as a stand-alone, wrapping up all its loose ends and giving its character arcs a strong conclusion.

TL;DR: You may judge this book by its cover.

It has been a while since a steampunk has caught my attention such as this did. The setting, the magic, the characters, all combined into a wonderful tale. My favorite of the knacks, and what really makes this a steampunk, was the invention knack and how these theater owners used it to create animatronic props that brought plays to life. I would love to see the machine's talked about in this book and how they worked with the dancers in real life.

Though she doesn't have the invention knack, the heroine Leo is the heart of this story. A manipulator of emotions but still unable to take even the most blatant of hints, she was a wonderful character to have lead us through the story. I adored her and Paxton's relationship and related to her protectiveness over her sister.

Despite the light tone of the book, there are some dark portions. Leo's backstory is heartbreaking and affects her outlook on the world and her relationships with everyone around her. There are also a couple of deaths, both of which are treated with less solemnity than might be anticipated. Particularly with the last one. Yet overall, this is a light, whimsical read with a touch of romance.

I have provided an honest review after having received an eARC of the book from the publisher.

I received an ARC from the publisher. This review is my own independent and fair evaluation.

This book saved me from a reading slump. I was just having difficulty getting into books lately but this was just such a fun read. I loved the world building and the characters were fun to hang out with.

My biggest critique (if you can call it that) is that the main characters reminded me very much of the main characters from another book by H.L. Burke, Spice Bringer. In a lot of ways, Paxton seemed like a Jayesh with a metal arm. Can't complain too much though, both Paxton and Jayesh are super sweet.

I'm also sure I'm not the only one who would like to visit Mademoiselle Kimber's bakery. Can we make that a real life place somehow please?

I'd highly recommend this book. It was fun and heartwarming and made me cry happy tears at the end.

I “beta” read this book, but wasn’t actually much help as I didn’t start the book until too late (I forgot it was in my inbox, you see).

When I remembered to read it ... well, let’s just say I still haven’t forgotten how amazing this plot is and I’ll be buying a copy soon ;) Definitely one of my favorite things I’ve ever read by Heidi!

The plot was charming and intriguing and surprising in all the best ways. Sometimes even shocking. There were some parts I wasn’t sure of at first (such as the snail circus) but even those parts captivated me pretty soon.

I plan to buy this book and make all my siblings and friends read it.

Oh, and I just love the cover/ title/ characters/ plot sooooo much!!!

Why did I wait so long to read this book???? It lives up to the hype, and I adored it! It has all the quirky humor and gadgets and steampunk awesomeness of H.L. Burke's other steampunk series Nyssa Glass (which I also adored), complete with a snail circus. Yes, a snail circus.

The plot is a fight to keep the famed, family-run theater, the Curiosity, open. But it is also about family and love and finding your own way in the world while still staying true to family expectations.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did a really nice job, and I highly recommend it!

Heart of the Curiosity

H.L. Burke

Heart of the Curiosity introduces Leo and Muse, sisters who have run away from the Carnival. Muse has a knack for levitation which helps her as a dancer, but Leo’s is to manipulate people’s emotions, which she hates to do.
The bulk of the action takes place four years after they join the Curiosity Theatre, life is looking up for the sisters. Muse has her first solo dance in a show, and Leo has settled in using her knack to promote the show and sway the audience. Unfortunately, there are people who want the theatre to use its power source, the Heart, and things start going wrong.
This is a rollicking story with an animatronic wolf and a snail circus. People have knacks, small limited magical abilities which may be helpful or sinister. The idea of knacks is an interesting one, and the notion isn’t completely uncovered, but there is enough information to make us comfortable with the world.
The main characters are exceptionally well drawn with their own fears and flaws and goals, the villain’s motivation is well set up. The plot is not complicated by a lot of subplots, but it works well for the length of the book.
I highly recommend it for those who like young adult fiction, especially with what I guess I would call electro-punk feel to it.

That was fun. There were a few bits that I was frustrated with, but nothing significant enough to make me dislike the book. Leo is a pretty solid example of how to make a character likeable while still having that character be an Actual Disaster. She felt quite relatable too — generally sensible and honest, but not at all logical when it comes to protecting her sister. (Which is, y'know, how older sisters are Meant To Be.) I will admit that there were a couple spots where interactions between Leo and Muse felt a tiny bit off, but it was never enough to be a serious problem.

Paxton and the Curiosity were also great. Paxton's a sweetheart, and I love the concept of the mysterious, magical theater. I did expect that the hunt-through-the-theater and the finding-of-clues would take up more of the book, but I'm not complaining there.

The one issue I do have is that, at the end, people seem to let go of/get over trauma surprisingly quickly. Not sure how I feel about that. But, again, it's not a serious enough offense that I'll mark the book down just for that.

Overall, a solid story about two sisters and a fairly remarkable boy. Will probably reread. Would certainly recommend.

Gotta be honest: I have read several books by H.L. Burke and enjoyed them, but about 90% of the reason I bought this book (and bought it in paperback rather than ebook) is because I am in love with the cover.

That said, the story totally lived up to the expectations set by that beautiful art. Steampunk set in a theater, with ballet and fairy tale performances and automatons, cool magic, mystery, and a sweet romance. I loved everything about this story, and it has absolutely topped my list as favorite by this author.

Another delightful story from H.L. Burke! I loved the idea of everyone in that world having a "knack" and being able to do something magical and unique to each of them. If only! I would definitely take Muse's knack. I have dreams like that. This book is "steampunk" instead of fantasy, like many of Burke's other novels, and she does a wonderful job of weaving fun inventiony stuff into Leo's world. You will wish you could take in just one show at The Curiosity. A wonderful summer read for the YA audience, but I enjoyed it as well (and am definitely not YA!). Great lessons on what friendship and family really mean.

Steampunk and performers seem to go hand-in-hand, especially circuses. The main focus of this book is a ballet theater, which makes good use of steampunk technology, but there's also a tiny snail circus which sounds like lots of fun!

This story is enjoyable and imaginative. The setting is rich with details about the theater, the steampunk city, and the ways that everyone's little magical Knacks interact with each other. The mystery about the Heart is interesting with a few twists, but the real draw for me was the interaction between the characters. Leo and Paxton have a great friendship, and some of the side characters like Coriander and Clarion are so charming. I wish we'd had more time for the theater "family."

I loved the little "Easter egg" mention of San Azula, which implies that the book takes place in the same world as Nyssa Glass. Paxton and Ellis should swap notes sometime.

Three trigger warnings for this book: it contains spiders (which are friendly but described as large and fuzzy), death (not explicit, but on-screen), and also mentions of sexual assault (off-screen and not explicit, but enough to make me take a break). Most of the story is light-hearted and fun but the main character is haunted by her past trauma.

More about the trauma, it's not really a spoiler because it's mentioned from the first scene. Leo is on the run from a circus manager who abused her. Because of this, she's very jumpy, doesn't trust men, and is extremely protective of her younger sister. All too often, abuse is a heavy-handed and cheap plot device for a female character. The author writes about Leo's emotions carefully and delicately, with a lot of realism. It's not used just for shock value. It's done well, but it's because of the realism that it may be hard to read. I also appreciated that she didn't just "get over" her PTSD magically, it's obviously going to be something she continues to work on.

Favorite meal: all the pastries sounded so delicious. The baker has the magical ability to add any flavor into her creations, and she's always experimenting with new things. I really want to try the lemon and sunshine scones with whipped butter. My mouth was watering in every scene where the characters were eating, which was frequently.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys steampunk, circuses/theaters, and girls who overcome trauma. Also fans of Neil Gaiman, Tamora Pierce, and Gail Carriger.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having read several of Ms. Burke's novels and having especially liked her Nyssa Glass steampunk series, I was excited to read her latest, which is set in the world of theatre using an interesting concept of magical "knacks." The MC is Leodora, or Leo, who has had a rough upbringing in a traveling circus where unspeakable things happened to her. This causes her to run away with her younger sister Muse, not only to protect her but to help her reach her dream of being a dancer. At The Curiosity, an old family theatre with dark secrets of its own, they meet a fellow teen named Paxton who has a mechanical arm and a kind heart. Leo and Muse find a home and a family, and all is well for four years. But conflict is the heart of fiction, so of course, things don't stay safe. Someone else wants to uncover the secrets at the Heart of the Curiosity, and destruction and death ensue.

This wonderful story is part magic, part mystery, and part coming-of-age while dealing with serious subjects in a very effective way. The details are so much fun to read, from the smells and tastes of the local "coffee shop" to the adorable snail circus and the chilling, sometimes dangerous secret passages in the old theatre. Recommended for older teens and up, since there is a murder, two self-defense killings, mild swearing, and the effects of rape, but all are dealt with in a sensitive way.

Heart of the Curiosity by H. L. Burke

Leodora and Musette, orphan sisters, have run away from a traveling circus to escape exploitation and abuse. Leo (the plain elder sister) is convinced that Muse (her cute and talented younger sister) has what it takes to dance on stage at the legendary Curiosity. Meeting Paxton, heir to the Curiosity, gives the girls an opportunity to prove themselves, and the future looks bright until tragedy strikes at the Curiosity. Leo, Muse and Paxton must solve a mystery and expose saboteurs in order to save their home and their livelihood.

Oh, but it’s not anywhere near that simple. This is Steampunk. Just in case I’m not the last person to become aware of Steampunk, this story takes place in a less technologically advanced era, but involves some strange and amazing technology of its own.

Each person in this particular world is gifted with a “Knack,” a talent that allows them to do something unusual … and typically helpful. Muse’s knack is levitation, a boon to her dancing skills. Paxton is a genius at repair jobs, which is perfect for someone who works at a theater with animatronic characters. Leo’s knack is the ability to manipulate people’s emotions. Knacks can also cause problems, and this is the situation for Leo on more than one occasion. She begins to see her knack as a bit of a curse. All she wants is for her sister to get a fair chance to be successful, but things don’t always work out the way she hopes they will.

Blackmail. Threats. Danger. Sneakiness. Accusations. Ultimatums. And snails? Yes, don’t forget the snail circus. This is a fun book with unexpected situations and interesting characters. It touches on some dark topics, but not in a graphic way; springboards for discussion abound. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

There is so much I liked about Heart of the Curiosity. First off, it’s a steampunk fantasy, so the world she created was wonderfully familiar, but with that twist that makes it so much more interesting.
And I love the idea of everyone having a “knack” – a magical ability of some sort that is fairly unique to each person. Leo’s knack was amazing! That she could see emotions in color was super cool, but even better that she could then manipulate those emotions. It was captivating to follow her journey to understanding how valuable her knack could really be.
And who knew I’d ever find myself cheering for a snail circus? But darned if I didn’t. Apparently snails are cool now. It’s a thing.
Filled with interesting world-building, beautiful moments, and classic H.L. Burke snark, Heart of the Curiosity made my first days of recuperation much more enjoyable than they should have been! I loved getting swept up in Leo’s story, and I’m sure you will, too. Don’t miss Heart of the Curiosity!

H.L. Burke has once again delivered a book filled with snarky humor, "Awww"-worthy romance, and all the feels, and I love it! The Curiosity was such a cool old theater with its family traditions and secret passages, and the magic system of knacks was fun to explore. (Did anyone else sit and ponder what their knack would be??) I enjoyed getting to know Leo and Paxton - they had so many great lighthearted interactions with just the right amount of more powerful moments mixed in. Fans of Nyssa Glass will especially adore this one :) My only complaint is I would've liked to get to know the rest of the theater community better, but I still highly recommend it!

This is a Steampunk Fantasy for Young Adults, but adults will enjoy it too! There's mystery, danger, and suspense. It's witty with a bit of romance and some bantering. It also has some deeper themes.

The story follows the life of big sister Leo. She and her sister Muse live and work at The Curiosity, a grand old theater. There's even a snail circus!

Everyone is born with a magical knack. Some knacks are quirkier than others. Leo has the rare ability to manipulate emotions and her sister, who is a dancer on stage, can levitate. But tragedy strikes at the theater and the sisters' futures are no longer certain. There's sabotage, blackmail, and a mystery that needs solving. Where is the mythical heart? Can Leo and Paxton, the heir to The Curiosity, find it in time to save the show?

I received an ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Heart of the Curiosity is a beautiful slow-burn romance with a page-turning plot, unique and engaging atmosphere, and stunning visuals.

WOW. I've enjoyed H.L. Burke's books in the past, so I was looking forward to this one. I was not disappointed! It grabbed my interest from the first paragraph and held me tight (causing a few late nights) until the end!

I was emotionally engaged with Leodora. I fell in love with Paxton before she did, I think. haha! The plot was solid, with the story almost entirely taking place in The Curiosity, a theater of sorts that specializes in animatrons (mechanical animals) and dance. It was a great mix of steampunk, mystery, action, and romance.

And did I mention a Snail Circus? I totally want to see that.

Heart of the Curiosity was an intriguing and fun read, and one that I will probably buy and read again.

I received an ARC from the publisher. This review is my own independent and fair evaluation.

Having not read a ton of steampunk, I loved this intro to a new kind of story with its own sort of magic. It was surprising and deep in content (I loved Paxton the most). It was vivid and wild, quirky and intriguing, just the perfect sort of summer adventure (except that it was raining everytime I picked it up). The character arcs are clear but complex, just how I like them. I was satisfied with the ending and I felt like I was in Leo's world with her while reading it. I would mention a note of caution for anyone who is sensitive to deep content- there are some adult themes in here. Other than that, as a whole I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to friends.

Heart of the Curiosity was such a fun read. The worldbuilding excelled and was very much in the nature of the whimsical, steampunk type I love. But mostly I loved Leo. She’s so genuine, from her tough love and grit to her fears and self-perception issues to her impossibly endearing love for sweets. And Paxton? was?? adorable???

I deeply appreciated how while Leo’s traumatic past created issues for her in the present, these repercussions were handled with frankness, discretion, and an ultimate goal of looking ahead and healing. And having friends who are there on your good days, your bad days, and your in-between.

It took me ages to scrape out the time to read this one, but I’m so glad I waited for the chance to sit and truly savor it. A total five-star.

I read an ARC of this book, all opinions are my own.

One thing that really stood out to me is how strong Leo is. She's been through a lot in her life. Everyone seems to want to use her knack to manipulate people, leaving her feeling like her knack is a curse. I love how she overcomes her past and discovers her purpose.

I LOVE PAXTON!!!! *Cue fangirl squealing* He's an all around outstanding character that just made me smile everytime he spoke.

There are several other fun characters that really round out the world they live in and I loved exploring the different magical knacks people might have (bug charmer anyone?) So many fun ideas!

This was a fun little steampunk/clockpunk backstage adventure with likeable characters, suitable for upper YA and above. I especially enjoyed the fantasy element (super/magic powers are talents called “knacks”) and the cozy touches, like the descriptions of the local bakery. Also, when so many North American authors choose to write English-based fantasy, it’s fun to see others like HL Burke and Hanna Sandvig who get inspiration from their own sense of place.

Content warning: one character has experienced SA in the past (offscreen, not described).

The Heart of the Curiosity is an exciting character-driven steampunk novel by one of my favorite authors. I loved the depth and uniqueness of each of the characters and how Burke kept you guessing as to the identity of the antagonist up until the action-packed ending.

Leo and Paxton's friendship is my favorite part of the story. Their devotion to each other and to those they love was the highlight of the book.

Delightful

Awwwww!!! I’ve been waiting to read this story for a while, falling in love with Leo and Muse and Paxton and the snail circus as I read bits and snippets as Heidi wrote. This was worth every second of the wait. A story about family, and magic, and loyalty and SCONES. Leo definitely has the right attitude about coffee and scones. And the love story was perfectly done. D’AWWWW!!! Go read it now! Also, that cover is phenomenal.
