Blanc Comics is an interactive creative project developed by JD Estrada. This original comic book storyline has all the descriptions, all the panels, all the dialogue, and actions, but the panels are "blanc" because as the storyteller, Estrada is blind... and we need YOU to see the story. The 3 missions of Blanc Comics: 1. Offer artists all the tools they need to create something they could include in their portfolio to help them get a job in the field they love. 2. Promote the tolerance of points of view. Descriptions are offered in a way where there is flexibility so that what one person draws is unique to their vision as an artist. No one is right and we are all invited to share our perspective.3. Encourage diversity and creativity by exploring beyond mutant superpowers and typical superhero stories. It is the 19th century and zombies exist. Hundreds of attacks have been reported and for the most part, there are no survivors.... For the most part. A vampire has been battling zombies for over a century. A Native American was the sole survivor in a 500-mile radius.A samurai's village was eradicated. An army of three shares one common hunger... Revenge.
After years of working in advertising, I figured there were better ways to write fiction. Born on August 13th, I share birthdays with Alfred Hitchcock and Fidel Castro... an interesting coincidence since mom is Cuban and I love a good story.
Truth be told, ever since I was a kid I dreamt about being an inventor, I just didn't know I'd end up doing it using words. Where some people choose to invent new products, I’ve chosen to invent worlds through words.
In college, I studied psychology for 3 years before realizing that if I finished, I'd need a psychologist for myself. Not being too enticed by the whole full circle nature of that trajectory, I switched to Marketing, Advertising... and Psychology. Seems I just couldn't let it go.
A lover of Science Fiction and Fantasy, I’ve always loved writing and connecting with people. Mind you, although I love these genres, my reading tastes are as eclectic as my musical passions. So from rock to salsa to classical music, I also read and write in a variety of genres and am just as satisfied writing a review or a poem as I am working on my next novel. My obsession with the human aspect of who we are is deeply embedded in most of my work and my first book is no exception. Only Human is the first link within the Human Cycle, a three-book exploration of humanity through fiction.
I’m currently working on several projects, consistently put out free material on the blog (jdestradawriter.blogspot.com) and I rant with zest on Twitter via @jdestradawriter. I also have and instagram account (@jdestradawriter) if you want to see what I’m getting up to or what delicious beer I may recommend pairing with the book your reading.
My favorite band is Pearl Jam, I was born in Puerto Rico, I bodyboard and to me, playing a guitar is as therapeutic as a bleeding into a notebook with my pen. So by all means, visit, say hi and connect.
An outlet for creativity and one heck of a story! Yesterday I had the great pleasure of reading Raining Dead by author extraordinaire JD Estrada. Before I delve into this review, I would like to say that I admire JD. It is not only his humbleness and his wilfulness to help others is his god-giving talent. He has proven a true multifaceted genre writer. The passion that he puts in everything he writes stands out in each one of his works. So is the case of the graphic novel Raining Dead. Raining Dead is not your usual graphic novel; Raining Dead is a creative outlet for every professional and neophyte artist. An invitation to sharpen or develop your artistic skills. It is also a blueprint for every aspiring writer who wants to enter the fantastic comic book world. Although it purposely lacks imagery, the panels (created by JD) description alongside the dialog creates a cohesive and compelling story. A Samurai, a rifle welding Native American, and a snarky Vampire come together to stop a zombie apocalypse. It may sound like a ludicrous concept, but trust me, JD's narrative makes it work and keeps you engaged until the last page.
Why is this graphic novel is so important? The book explains in great detail who inspired him to write this. Never underestimate the imagination and the descriptive powers of someone, even if they live in a world where they can only see shadows.
The world of "professional" comic books is very exclusive. I've witnessed (and so does JD) very talented artists have their hopes to use their giving talent to earn a living shatter by naysayers in suits. As a teacher, JD Estrada's mentorship and caring for his fellow writers and artist created more than a comic book to draw yourself. He created a platform where you can express your talents in an openly and unique way. Each artist that picks up this book will have a one-of-a-kind graphic novel. His method and approach to the book will allow the artist to draw freely without restraints.
So if you have an itch for penciling a professional script or learning how to tell a solid story without the convoluted method that goes into writing a book without images or a novel, Raining Dead is the Graphic Novel for you.
