In 1996, a ten-year-old boy experienced the most traumatic incident of his life. He discovered the body of an elderly woman, with a knife sticking out of her back, in an abandoned house on his street. Twenty-three years later, dreams of the event still haunt him and now he is going back to where it all began. That man is Detective Sergeant Blake Harte. But Blake has more demons from his past about to reappear than he could ever realise.
Thomas Frost, the killer that Blake helped put behind bars before he moved to Harmschapel, has been plotting his revenge and he is about to make his move. Blake Harte, the man that can explain the impossible, is about to be put to the ultimate test when Frost escapes confinement in a way that defies all logic and reasoning.
With his old home city in a state of panic as a killer once more prowls the streets, Blake must prepare for an ultimate confrontation of his personal demons as questions he has had nearly all his life are finally answered. Who was the old woman? How did she die? And who will be caught in the crossfire when Thomas Frost and Blake Harte finally come face to face once again?
I went into this thinking this was the end book(which now I am not sure if it is?) so my expectations were pretty high. And this book delivered.
Blake was like always, a bundle of curiousity and confidence(over confidence). Although, there are things which even he couldn't predict in this one without his handy boyfriend whose involvement had me so excited that I almost wanted him to have a face-off with F. A few surprises which I didn't see coming, namely Fox and the reporter. And Tom's attacker. Which was the major shocker. Too much was happening in the book, but not in a bad way, in a really very good way actually. I loved the pace, the clues and the way the story was tying together, and the involvement of Harrison which had us reading two detective's point of view who were in different places and not necessarily privy to what the other had found. I did want to see Blake's reaction to Harrison's breaking of the rules. Something tells me Blake wouldn't have been too amused about it and that would be so fun to watch. For some reason I love people getting on Blake's case. The ending was perfect and makes me so excited to see future books in the series, that is if this isn't the last. I am not sure. If this was the last book, it was a really good ending to a fabulous series that I hope gets turned into a show or something.
So whilst this one nicely rounds off a few threads and questions from the series, I was delighted to see at the end that there will be more Harte books! Blake gets the answers to a lot of questions that go back right to being 10years old and finding a body. It all gets very close to home and the mystery of the disappearing prisoner is quite interesting (though in real life one would hope it wouldn’t happen and there would be more uproar and more investigators). Again more Blake than Harrison, though he does go off for a bit if sleuthing himself. Frost does whats expected really () I have enjoyed this series, the buildup of Blake’s complex character especially. Hopefully we’ll see a more relaxed Blake in future
Wow. So many twists and reveals. This was worth the wait. I'm still kind of over Harrison's seeming sainthood but given how much he's been through, I think Blake is about even with him in terms of devastating emotional impact.
I can't believe this is the tenth locked room mystery that Blake's been able to solve. As far as puzzle plots go, the locked room subset provides the largest conundrum and I can understand why the author continues to explore them.
Such a tense and compelling read. I was truly blindsided by the boldness of one of the twists but it ties up several loose ends in such an elegant way. Now I'm curious to see how, if at all, it plays out in the next installment.
This was another great book in this series. It is the perfect amount of intrigue and suspense and thriller without being gory or disturbing. Innes books are always plot driven reads with great twists in the storyline.
This book finally answered age old questions and wrapped up a major plotline from the beginning of the series. I hope that this now opens the door for new mysteries to be solved and more stories around Blake and Harrison's relationship. This series needs to continue! They are great books to grab for an updated version of the classic who-done-it mysteries.
What a fantastic wrap-up to what's gone before in Blake Harte's life! Even the little side-stories (Sally's job, Matti's screw-up, Tom and Jacqueline) had rather satisfying ends, although I'm still interested to see if Matti manages to keep his act together in the future... I'll be on the lookout for more stories about DS Harte for sure, even if he won't be solving the mysteries of his own past any more.
Blake Harte is one man that doesn't give up on solving any case that come before him. This time it was his and his ex-partner lives on the line. As always be figure out the mystery and solved the case. I always look forward to reading this series and I'm looking forward to the next book. Thank you so much for this series.
The best so far. This one was thrilling, Robert Innes as really hit his stride with this one. The new characters were so well drawn, especially the bad guys, and our favourite hero's just get better and better. I am really looking forward to the next one and hope that there are more to come after that.
I won’t give anything away but Rob Innes did fantastic job bringing the whole story together. He gave Blake a great send off and did incredible justice to this great series.
I will miss these characters but they went out in style. Great job Rob!
We’ve been traveling down a road and finally got to see where it was going. It was great to see how all of the pieces of the previous 9 books fit together.
Thought this was the last one and I was sad but I am so glad I was wrong. I would have been 100% satisfied if this was the last book it kept me hooked the whole time and I was in tears by the end. I'm a sucker for romance but the crimes is what I here for.
Utterly, Utterly Brilliant, the suspense was top notch, make sure you have a box of tissues handy you’ll need them, Thankyou Mr Innes for another fantastic read ❤️
