Be a slave to the truth or know freedom from the lie.It was a long-ago message from a departed friend and mentor that leads to another mystery for San Juan Islands reporter Adele Plank to try and unravel as the final days of winter slowly give way to a newborn spring.
A stranger suddenly appears in Roche Harbor seeking answers.
A mythical island shaman emerges to guide Adele toward a future and past she doesn't yet fully understand.
An old enemy threatens to return and carry out her deadly revenge.
Roche Harbor Rogue is the highly anticipated fifth installment of the bestselling San Juan Islands Mystery series by USA Today featured author, D.W. Ulsterman.
I just read this book and maybe I should wait a while before posting a review because my immediate reaction is one of extreme disappointment and frustration. Note: This review won't mean much to you if you haven't been reading the series. I don't think the book will interest you much either if you haven't read the previous ones. Nothing happens with regard to the threat posed by the Russians. There are few of the continuing loose ends that are resolved. The story of the crystals is the most interesting part of the book. The sale of the bank is tentatively resolved, but not a done deal either. The thing that irritated me most is the threat from the Russians is mentioned in the preview blurbs about the book and is repeated numerous times throughout the book. Yet absolutely nothing concerning that happens at all. I'm wondering through how many books that will remain the constant. I have enjoyed these books until this one and I feel cheated and frustrated upon finishing this one. I'm tired of cliffhanger endings. If an author writes a good book, fans will read the next one. This growing tendency to end with a major cliffhanger is making me less inclined to read another book.
I live part time in Washington have traveled to many of the islands I read all five of the books never left one without opening the next I have already recommended too many I gave it five stars because I wanted to keep reading it held my interest till the end.
More Adele and San Juan Island fun! This wasn't a mystery like the first 4 and at first I felt a little weird about it but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. This book acts like a bridge between the 4th and 6th books.
The first few books are case open, case closed but that is needed when you are introducing characters and trying to keep the reader engaged while doing so. Now we are beyond the basic character introduction and reaching more character development and flourishing the islands and supporting characters. I think that makes it ok.
There is still a mystery in the book, but not your typical who-killed-who kind. Overall I enjoyed the book. The pace as good, the characters are growing and changing, and new connections are being made. If you've read the first four books then I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. If you haven't read the first four books then why in the world are you reading this review!? Go get book one!
Speaking of book one!!! There are a LOT of connections between the first book and this one. It was a pleasant surprise to be able to see the first book from the bird's eye view of book 5. So many connections and overlaps and lives entangled with each other. Such a pleasure, indeed!
Initially, I chose to read 'The Writer', the first book in this series, because of the location in the San Juan Islands, a place I love to visit. Frequently when reading a new author, I give them a 30-page chance to hold my interest. In the 1st book, I was about 50/50 on page 30. I am glad I stayed with it as I am really enjoying this series. I like the characters, although I have a bit of a hard time identifying with any of them. (As an aside I do not care for the choice of name for the primary character - I have never heard of a woman her age with the name Adele, it is more appropriate for a woman of 80.) The plots are great, very interesting storylines that are not predictable, and make for very enjoyable reading. They are fast reads. I most enjoy the descriptive writing of the location and the characters, as well as the insights of the characters. I like the way the history of the characters has emerged from one book to the next. I agree with another reviewer about the ending of 'Roche Harbor Rogue'. Early in the book, there is a major plot point inserted that is never addressed later in this book leaving the reader to assume it will be the subject of the next book. This made the ending of the book rather awkward, even though the other plot points were resolved.
Best mystery series …. and set in the San Juan Islands!
Every now and then a book really stand out. The story is interesting, compelling to finish, and characters become so real they feel like friends. There are useful tidbits about life, dealing with adversity, importance of loyalty and friendship sprinkled in.
This series starting with The Writer, has all that, and it has been set in the very special place, the San Juan Islands. After reading the first book in the series, I read the next, and the next, and the next until finishing each book that is available written by Ulsterman. This series has become one of my favorites, I’m spreading the word to other readers, San Juan Islanders, friends and cousins from the midwest and everyone I talk to about books. If you like a well told story, read one, then read them all!
I am in love with this series. Ulsterman makes the San Juan Islands sound like one of the most beautiful, sacred places on earth. I saw this fifth installment in the series as more of a character building and enhancement than a progression of the plot. I expect the next book will really take on the Russians. Although, this book did fill in some very interesting backstory - I’m always sad when another book in this series comes to an end. I feel as though I’m living through these vibrant characters and I want to keep going on their journey. Altogether l, a fantastic read!
I have not spent a lot of time exploring the San Juans. Most recently I viewed them out my front Windows across the Straits of Juan Dr Fuca. Thanks for your books Mr. U. I am too old to do much exploring now if it is not by books. I am very much enjoying the series and will continue.
These books just get better and better. The continuing life happenings of Adele Plank and her friends in the San Juan Islands is like reading a letter from a best friend. Roland matures, Lucas comes to terms with reality, Tilda mellows and the tight knit group become closer. Definitely read the series if you need to relax and enter a different world.
This was a very special book by an excellent author!
My husband &I explored the San Jeans by auto, boat, & bicycles in the 1980's while living in Port Ludlow. So far the first five books in the San Juan Series have brought Bach so many wonderful memories for us of that time period while reading the novels of D. W. Ulsterman! THANK YOU!
It is always fun to read books that take place where you live. The San Juan Islands from this series bears a slight resemblance to the real location but fortunately we don't have the types of problems that the characters have to deal with. A fun read.
If you haven’t started this series you are in luck
Otherwise you will probably want to binge on the series from the first to the fifth book. Oh my goodness this should be made into a television series. You can’t put it down I promise!
Seriously couldn't put this one down. Even better than the last one! If you haven't read book one you need to right now. I promise you won't be disappointed and you will be just as hooked as I am on these books.
Amazing book. I am hooked on the Mr. ULSTERMANS BOOKS.
It's been a very long time since I have been able to read a book all thr way through. I often get bored and donate it. This is my 3rd book by this D.w. Ulsterman and I can't put these books down.
I’m really enjoying this series. There’s a great mix of mystery, complex and interesting characters, and suspense. These books are giving me and itch to visit the San Juan’s again soon! I’m looking forward to downloading reading the next book.
I'm not a fan of romance novels anyway, but I thought I'd try San Juan Islands series. Nope, can't do it. The storyline just keeps getting slower and slower.
I didn't much care for this one; just couldn't empathize with some of the characters. I rate it 3.5 stars. Jim read this on 6-16-19 and rated it 4.5 stars.
Really enjoyed the story. Lots of good closure to the series. Surprises throughout keep the reading interesting. Would highly recommend the whole series.
