White Devil: A Tale of Adventure

Rate this book
Zombies aren’t created in secret laboratories nor do they arrive on the tail of a comet. Rather, they were born in the myths and legends of ancient Africa. When Lady Barbara Collingswood arrives in South Africa, she seeks out the experienced white hunter Stewart Rider as her guide. She is determined to follow the same path as her late husband in search of clues to the lost civilization of the Kitara. Rider considers it a fool’s errand just as he had done two years earlier when he turned down Lord Collingswood, leaving his fate in far less reliable hands. Rider reluctantly agrees only to assuage his conscience, convinced that this “delicate blossom” will soon tire of the venture but Lady Barbara proves far more competent and resilient than he bargained for and slowly wins Rider’s grudging respect. The trek is long and arduous, beleaguered by the elements, beset by deadly beasts, hostile natives, parched deserts and suffocating jungles. They are egged on by tantalizing clues that seem inexorably to point to their goal while their footsteps are dogged by rumors of a mysterious “White Devil” and horrors so terrible that no man can speak its name. Cast in the mold of King Solomon’s Mines, White Devil is a sprawling adventure tale that will take you up the length of Victorian era Africa, from its parched savannahs to its dense jungles rife with dangers both natural and supernatural.

I am so glad I know Steve from the historical group we are in together or I might have missed out on one fantastic read! The characters are intriguing, and the writing is so descriptive that it is very easy to find yourself transported to Africa alongside Mr. Rider and Lady Barbara. This book is a wonderful combination of period novel, adventure, and mystery, all bound together with a supernatural flare. The further the main characters treck the more you learn about them, their pasts, and their quest. They continuously meet a cast of colorful characters who each add their assets to the tale. This was one of those books that I sorry to finish because I didn't want the story to end.
