Pocos autores consiguen hacer que una historia ficticia te haga dudar de su imposible veracidad. Supongo que es un mecanismo de defensa. El creer que existen escondidos en lugares recónditos de la tierra criaturas monstruosas capaces de hacerte enloquecer con su solo visionario supone un alivio para la cordura. Así que todo eso lo descartamos como veraz y nos divertimos imaginando su grotesca irrealidad.
Pero es que Lovecraft tiene una extraña capacidad innata para hacerte dudar. Porque su manera de describir los acontecimientos que narra en cualquiera de sus relatos te invitan a fantasear en si realmente existen esos mundos que describe con tanta certeza. ¿Por qué si no damos por cierto que hay ejemplares valiosos de libros malditos escondidos en bibliotecas de reconocido prestigio?
El Necronomicon famoso no existió. Y nos cuesta afirmarlo sin ánimo de duda. Lo mismo pasa con sus historias. Aquí nos presenta a la que posiblemente sea su criatura más reconocible. Y lo hace de un modo tan organizado y creíble que no deja de venirte la duda de si lo que lees es real. Manuscritos, investigaciones, sucesos que ocurren de manera simultánea en regiones alejadas entre sí, sueños recurrentes y cánticos que no se te quitan de la cabeza...Lovecraft estructura una locura verosímil que tiene que ser cierta de algún modo. Seguro que habrá algún libro escondido en alguna biblioteca que lo certifique. Y si no es así, entonces es que los antiguos siguen esperando su momento.

Il grande formato rende le immagini (spettacolari e dallo stile un po' "videoludico") che accompagnano il racconto ancor più suggestive.

Una lectura fantástica. Tenía miedo de que no me gustara HP Lovecraft, y además que fuese una historia corta no ayudaba pues no son lo mío. ¡Pero vaya sorpresa que me he llevado! Ha sido muy buena elección como primera lectura de este muy reconocido autor.
Lovecraft es un narrador fabuloso, con un dominio virtuoso del lenguaje que consigue llevarte a una espiral de locura de la que es muy difícil salir y te sumerge en la historia sin que te des cuenta.
Esta edición con las ilustraciones de François Baranger es una maravilla. El ilustrador creo que capta muy bien en el dibujo la esencia de la historia. Desprende talento en cada página y meticulosidad en cada detalle.

Lovecraft is generally credited as a master of horror. He is praised for his world building and his original monsters and ideas. He is considered to be one of the best horror writers out there, and even now, years after his death he is wildly praised amongst book reading circles.
But here comes little ol' me, having an unpopular opinion once again!
I know I am the minority here, but I really didn't care for this one.
I can kinda tell this was written back when the whole supernatural horror genre was relatively young, or at least not very well known. And, I am gonna say it, better things have come out since then.
I am very picky when it comes to horror and the way to capture my interest (or one of the ways to do that) is to either create a captivating atmosphere or have interesting characters (well, having both of these things would be the ideal, but whatever.)
For me, Lovecraft does neither.
Okay, had Cthulu be a real life creature, I would be scared of it. But in the context of this story, I just can't bring myself to be intrigued by it.
I am also not a fan of the way this story was narrated (one character goes through old documents style) and of the fact that there is no dialogue at all.
By the way, are we gonna ignore that the guy was notoriously racist, sexist and classist?
Because that's present even in this short story.
He uses the n word and the only good people are middle or upper class and, of course, white.
While the followers of Cthulu's cult are either POC, biracial, women and people with developmental disabilities.
Now, I am not saying that people who enjoy Lovecraft's works are all the bad things that he was, okay? Please be smarter than that. I am just saying that I don't really like reading such stuff, especially when they are portrayed as the norm.
So yeah, there you have it. Another famous book that I didn't like.
And please remember, comments such as "it's good but you just didn't get it" and "you are wrong and I will show you why because I know better" WILL NOT be appreciated at all.

Another illustrated edition of one of Lovecraft‘s most famous short stories published by Francois Baranger.
In 1926, when going through stuff left by his grandfather‘s dead brother, Francis Thurston learns of a mysterious cult that worships something very old and very dangerous. He also finds out about terrible blood rituals, people going insane under mysterious circumstances and even murders. Most fascinating of all, though, is a city in the middle of the sea. Apparently, his grandfather‘s brother wanted to uncover something rather sensational, perhaps even stopping the aforementioned cult before they destroy the world, but got too close and …. well.
Like I said, the story is famous. This book, however, introduces the eerie art already used for another release by Baranger.
Isn‘t it simply scrumptious?!
As with the other book (sadly published in 2 parts), this was also huge and unwieldy. Nevertheless, I enjoyed re-visiting this ominous and terrifying world thoroughly.

Ολόκληρη η κριτική στο Smassing Culture
Όταν το επικό συνάντησε την φρίκη
Έχουμε αναφέρει πολλές φορές το πόσο επιδραστικός στάθηκε ο H.P.Lovecraft για την λογοτεχνία (τρόμου και γενικότερα). Το Κάλεσμα του Κθούλου αποτελεί ίσως το πιο γνωστό και χαρακτηριστικό έργο του, αυτό που έδωσε το όνομα του στην μυθολογία την οποία εμπνεύστηκε και κληροδότησε στους επιγόνους του, οι οποίοι με την σειρά του έκτισαν πάνω της δυσθεώρητα τερατουργήματα.
Το Κάλεσμα του Κθούλου, όπως το γνωρίζουμε σε αυτή την απόπειρα από τις εκδόσεις Webcomics, η μνημειώδης αυτή αφήγηση συνοδεύεται (και τελικά ορίζετα) από την εικονογράφηση του Φρανσουά Μπαρανζέ, Γάλλου συγγραφέα και δημιουργού με μεγάλη εμπειρία στον χώρο της εικονογράφησης βιβλίων και στη δημιουργία artworks για video games. Είναι αυτές οι εικόνες και ο διάλογος τους με το κείμενο του Lovecraft που καθιστούν το παρόν έργο τόσο γοητευτικό.
Η εικονογράφηση των ιστοριών του Lovecraft ενέχει πάντα κινδύνους γιατί ενώ ο ίδιος είναι πολυγραφότατος και οι περιγραφές του εκτεαμένες, αυτό που τελικά περιγράφεται δεν κάνει σχεδόν ποτέ την εμφάνιση του. Η κυριαρχία της ασάφειας, του ονειρικού στοιχείου και του ανείπωτου, σαν ένα Πραγματικό που κρύβεται όχι πίσω, αλλά μέσα στην πραγματικότητα είναι τόσο έντονα που δεν αφήνουν πολλά περιθώρια. Πολλοί καλλιτέχνες που έχουν κληθεί να αναπαραστήσουν το λαβκραφτικό κόσμο δουλεύουν με αυτούς τους περιορισμούς, με έντονες σκιές και διακεκομένα περιθώρια, ξεθωριασμένα χρώματα και ελλειπτικές γωνίες. Αντίθετα από όλα αυτά, ο Μπαρανζέ αξιοποιεί την εμπειρία του από παιχνίδια όπως το Heavy Rain, διαλέγει μια εντελώς διαφορετική οπτική. Προσεγγίζοντας τα θεικά τέρατα του Lovecraft ως ακατανόητης δύναμης πλάσματα και χωρίς θεολογικό σεβασμό, ξαναβάζει τον υλισμό μέσα στην μυθολογία.
Έτσι, μας παρουσιάζει εικόνες επικών διαστάσεων, με μια γλυπτική σχεδόν πλαστικότητα και ευμορφία αλλά και μια διαφάνεια που λίγοι θα περίμεναν σε μια εικονογράφηση του Κθούλου. Στις εικόνες του παρατηρούμε και την επηρροή από τα παλαιότερες απόπειρες αποτύπωσης της λαβκραφτικής παράδοσης, όπως τα RPG ή τα pulp περιοδικά που έκανε και την εμφάνιση του το έργο του συγγραφέα. Αλλά το έργο του Μπαρανζέ σίγουρα ενώ δε περιφρονεί τις ρίζες του, στέκεται πολύ πιο πάνω από αυτές.
Η ανομοιότητα μεταξύ του κειμένου και της εικόνας που το περικλείει ανοίγει έναν πολύ ενδιαφέροντα και πολυεισοδικό διάλογο για το πως δύο καλλιτέχνες, διαφορετικής εποχής και απόψεων, διαπραγματεύονται το ίδιο θέμα. Η λογοτεχνία από την μία, με τις καταβολές της από την ποίηση, της μυθολογία και τη θεολογία συναντιέται στο πεδίο του φανταστικού με την σύγχρονη εικονογράφηση και τις παραδοχές στην ψηφιακή τεχνολογία, την αρχιτεκτονική και τη φωτογραφία. Διαφορετικές τέχνες και τεχνικές που τελικά κατέληξαν σε ένα έργο. Η ισορροπία που τελικά επιτυγχάνεται αποδεικνύει το πόσο πολυδιάσταστο είναι τελικό το έργο του συγγραφέα από το Providence, αλλά και ο σεβασμός που το δείχνει ο Γάλλος εικονογράφος.Η μετάφραση από τον ειδήμονα του είδους Γιώργο Μπαλανό είναι εξίσου φρέσκια.

I have read a number of versions of "The call of Cthulhu" over the years - it is after all the quintessential Lovecraft story and I cannot even begin to think of the number of compilations this story has appeared in.
So what makes this one so special - well simply put the artwork created by the gifted Francoise Barnanger just takes this story to another level. And the publishers not only acknowledge this but play to it in the fact that the box is massive (if light on pages) and the artwork is more often than not full page.
In short the artwork brings this story alive - and considering Lovecraft was famous for his often impossible descriptions the artwork give at least some insight in to the work of Cthulhu.
There are in fact a number of Lovecraft stories which have been given this treatment to - all of which I cannot wait to read based on the experience with this book. Well worth hunting down even if they are bit pricy.

Ich bin dem Cthuluh Mythos immer wieder über den Weg gelaufen, in anderen Büchern Spielen oder Filmen findet man immer wieder Anspielungen darauf.
Nun habe ich aber zum ersten Mal eine Originalgeschichte von H.P. Lovecraft gelesen und bin überwältigt ob der atmosphärischen Stimmung, die dieser mit seinen Worten einfängt, um ein unvorstellbares Grauen einzufangen, das nicht von dieser Welt ist.
Die Kurzgeschichte an sich war für mich aber gar nicht das besondere, ob sie einen gelungenen Einstieg in den Mythos um den göttergleichen großen alten "Cthuluh" bietet, sondern das Zusammenspiel mit François Barangers Zeichnungen, die dieses Buch und die Lektüre der Geschichte zu einem ganz besonderen, sehr stimmungsvollen Leseerlebnis machen.
Ein tolle Umsetzung, die auf mehr hoffen lässt. Ich bin jetzt jedenfalls im Lovecraft-Fieber.

A estas alturas he leído y disfrutado buena parte de la obra del soñador de Providence. Sin embargo, por motivos "ignotos y de naturaleza oculta", como diría el propio Lovecraft, aún no había visitado La llamada de Cthulhu. Lo cual tiene delito, siendo este un pilar fundamental dentro de su universo.
No ha desbancado a mis favoritos —El horror de Dunwich y El color que cayó del cielo siguen disputándose ese lugar—, pero su lectura ha resultado ser tremendamente disfrutable. No solo por el contenido, sino también por su condición de relato fundacional de los Mitos.
Mención especial a la edición ilustrada por Baranger, que a mi parecer eleva la experiencia de lectura a otro nivel, dotando al relato de unas dimensiones —ciclópeas y no euclidianas— que lo hacen aún más inmersivo y sobrecogedor.

Boston 1926. Francis Thurston po śmierci swojego ciotecznego dziadka odkrywa w odziedziczonych dokumentach zapiski dotyczącej tajemniczej sekty.
Bardzo, ale to bardzo chciałabym umieć podróżować w czasie i móc przeczytać to opowiadanie, kiedy tylko zostało wydane. Jakie to musiało robić wrażenie! Reporterski styl sprawił, że opowieść Francisa brzmiała bardzo wiarygodnie. Oczywiście, że nie wierzę w Cthulhu, ale nawet z dzisiejszą wiedzą o świecie, brzmiało to bardzo niepokojąco. No po prostu majstersztyk!
Wydanie albumowe z ilustracjami Brangera sprawiły, że moja wyobraźnia zaczęła szaleć. Chcę więcej! Jeśli jeszcze nigdy wcześniej nie weszliście w świat Lovecrafta, to czas to nadrobić. Warto jak nie wiem co!

I’m not the biggest Lovecraft nut, but I loved this presentation so much I just might be soon. I’ve always liked the work of the men Lovey influenced more than his own. I’ve read his most famous stories, but never until now—not even when I first read this very story—did I feel, “Let’s finally sink our teeth into this Lovecraft fella.”
This book is actually an art book. Kind of a bridge between the plain text and a graphic novel. It’s huge, with colorful images behind sections of text. Some of the images are a little too digital-looking for my taste, but they’re still very atmospheric. And there were some scenes I wish were less obscure, but I guess that obscurity is true to the story—and why Lovecraft hasn’t really yet been successfully adapted in any visual media. It’s all kind of silly and campy when it’s overt.
Baranger has also illustrated Mountains of Madness (in 2 parts) and coming soon is Dunwich Horror. I’m not sure I’ll pick those up as those stories are a little overly familiar but we shall see. Curiously, none of these seem to be available digitally. I prefer the physical book myself, for this story, but for the others I might be more apt to spend less on the digital version.
Oh, and to end on a cringey note: it’s the 2020s so the publishers had to close with a nauseating note breaking to us the newsflash that HP Lovecraft was a big, bad, mean, old racist, blah blah blah. I mean, no shit. I get why they did it (cowardice and protecting their inve$tment) and while I agree with the sentiment, it’s beyond trashy. Here you are making money off the guy! The racist guy. Why not just leave the dirty laundry to be aired by LITERALLY EVERY OTHER publication that even mentions the name Lovecraft. This is just virtue signaling nonsense. I suppose we should be grateful they haven’t edited or excised the text. Yet. At some point I’m sure the cultists will all be “soldier boys” or “ice hockey fans” or “bad tippers” or something equally stupid. Nobody in publishing has balls these days.

-¡La forma en la que está escrito hace dudar de su veracidad! Manuscritos, noticias, etc.
-Cthulhu es simplemente perfecto como criatura. O SEA, QUE COSA MÁS MONSTRUOSA Y GENIAL.
-La edición que leí es hermosa, y sin dudas la recomiendo mucho si es que les cuesta leer a Lovecraft. Las ilustraciones ayudan mucho.
-La parte final del libro está a otro nivel. Historia de terror en el mar. ✅

Σαν ιστορία, νομίζω πως αξίζει 4 αστέρια γιατί, κακά τα ψέματα, θεωρώ τον Lovecraft λατρεμένο μεν αλλά ξεπερασμένο. Για κάποιον που τώρα ψάχνεται με τρόμο, φανταστικό κτλ οκ, εννοείται πως πρέπει να τον διαβάσει. Η συγκεκριμένη έκδοση της νουβελέτας είναι όλα τα λεφτά. Δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ κάποιον καλό λόγο να διαβάσει κανείς 'σκέτο' το Κάλεσμα του Κθούλου σε απλό κείμενο, εκτός κι αν το έχει ήδη σε κάποια συλλογή. Εντάξει, μεταξύ μας, και το μέγεθος μόνο βολικό δεν είναι, αλλά είναι αυτό που χρειαζόταν η εκπληκτική, ανεπανάληπτη, ανυπέρβλητη και άλλα τέτοια βαρύγδουπα εικονογράφηση. Ο Baranger ζωγράφισε τέλεια αυτό που ο ίδιος ο Lovecraft αδυνατεί να περιγράψει.

Well well well, this was a bit disappointing. I expected something much more horrific but that's on me. A lot of the narration did not feel super interesting either. But as it is a short story, it's still easy enough to go through and stay curious about.
I did not enjoy the amount of racism, that is for sure (and no not everyone was racist back then...). Any good person was basically white and non-white people are either crazy, wild, savage, weird or whatnot. Which, personally, makes it very hard to read.
I know which author I'm not going to get into....

MAGISTRAL! Sin duda una de las ediciones más valiosas de mi biblioteca, despues de Santiago Caruso, François Baranger se acaba de convertir en mi segundo ilustrador favorito de Lovecraft, una tarea nada fácil y en la que muchos han fracasado. No veo la hora de que salga el primer tomo de ''En las Montañas de la Locura.''

Indescriptible y fantástica la conjunción de la narrativa de Lovecraft con los dibujos, por no llamarlos directamente “0bras de arte” de Baranger. Un placer para los sentidos y un tesoro para mi biblioteca.

What a phenomenal book! I just can't praise enough how great and amazing this edition is. Hardcover, pages and illustrations are mind blowing. The story, of course, is genius but again the aesthetics of the book match so good with the Lovecraftian world. Great experience.

Aaaaaah, I mean. Why do I read stuff like this? I read it in broad daylight and still got a bit scared. Its a short story, but this edition has some amazing art done by @francoisbaranger that really sets the mood. The level of details, and how the story is written just brings it to life. I felt the mood on every page, the darker it got, the more creepy the story became.
I've never read anything by Lovecraft before, but I did enjoy how it was written. The slow build up, the creepy vibe coming from every sentence. I cant believe I'm saying this, but the downside is how short it is. It could have been longer and given us more of character/story build ups.
Note that Lovecraft was a huge racist and it does come across in his writing. It's also acknowledged by the editors in the about section of the book, which I think is a good thing, as its something you cannot ignore.
This edition popped up when I was a the library a couple of weeks ago and peaked my interest. I've played a oneshot of Call of Cthulhu with some friends which was awesome, even if our dm scared the bejesus out of me 😆 Note to self: do not read scary books while listening to music thats creepy...

Aproveito que estou a falar das ilustrações lindas, para referir o excelente trabalho que a editora fez! A edição deste livro está incrível, é um hardcover gigante e muito bem trabalhado e editado. Em termos de edição, não há nada de negativo a apontar!

Bokklubbsbok - läste de två första delarna och kände inte särskilt mycket inför dom, mer än att det var en tokig saga från en svunnen kolonial tid. Sista delen lyssnade jag som ljudbok vilket var mycket trevligare, då blev det lite sån Halloweensk gemytlig stämning :) Men inte särskilt skräckig (tyvärr)
