Highly recommend this book if you love the show!
Even though some parts didn't contain new information (just the overall plot of each season), it was super interesting reading about the pov's of the actors and about them discussing the character they play. Also loved reading about the choice of music and the behind the scenes stories <3

De fiecare dată când cineva mă întreabă care este serialul meu preferat, ca și când alegerea ar putea fi cu adevărat una ușoară, mă blochez. Câteva îmi vin imediat în minte. Altele devin din ce în ce mai încețoșate. Cumva, indiferent cât de multe producții aș vedea, Peaky Blinders o să se afle mereu în top, chiar și ignorând acele momente în care am fost la un pas să arunc cu ceva înspre ecran, furioasă și dezamăgită de reacțiile și lanțul (aparent) nesfârșit de trădări din familia Shelby. Iar acum, după ce am citit și „ghidul” oficial al serialului, sunt tentată să-l revăd doar pentru a-mi aminti cât de înșelătoare au fost primele sezoane.
Intriga te seduce încă din primul sfert de oră: în 1919, o ladă cu mitraliere și muniție este furată din fabrica de armament Birmingham Small Arms, doar ca să ajungă (întâmplător, bineînțeles) în mâinile unei grupări infracționale conduse de familia Shelby, cunoscută în oraș drept Peaky Blinders. Îi recunoști fără probleme pe membrii bandei; sunt impecabil îmbrăcați, cu fiecare dungă a hainei la fel de dreaptă și tare precum lamele cusute în șepcile lor, cu papioanele și cravatele strânse bine în jurul gulerelor. Raised by Wolves (ultimele 4 episoade mi-au spulberat speranțele pentru potențialul următorului sezon, dar, cine știe, poate că voi fi plăcut surprinsă). Am început să mă uit la Peaky Blinders în urma discuțiilor dintre doi prieteni. Erau atât de fascinați de serial, atât de captivați de atmosferă, decor și personaje, încât m-au impulsionat să renunț la tot ce urmăream în acel moment pentru a mă rătăci neștiutoare pe străzile întunecate din Birmingham.
Prin urmare, m-am ascuns pe aleile din spatele fabricilor, înconjurată de gunoaie, în timp ce o miasmă dulceagă umplea aerul, alterată doar de mirosul înțepător al prafului de pușcă. Protejată de umbre, i-am privit pe membrii bandei Peaky Blinders cum jefuiesc și omoară, cum înșală și mint, cum supraviețuiesc și se răzbună. Heavy, hardbacked, glossy, glorious - beautful!
Peaky Blinders seemed to come out of nowhere. What is now considered cult UK television had a very slow start. From acceptance to worship, a series about a 1920's Birmingham razor gang had to ruffle a few feathers to even be noticed. But once it was noticed? Cue glamour, brutal violence, a modern rock soundtrack, intoxicating storylines and the kind of performances Hollywood likes to fantasise about while it strokes itself to sleep at night.
It never pretended to be REAL. It didn't want to be. It was 'hyper real' - and hyper addictive.
Now, half way through Season Five (oh yes people, though we have had 6 episodes already, according to Steven Knight, we will have a 5.2 continuation), we get a celebration book - and it scores HUGE!
It's a weighty and glossy tome. The text is big so it won't take you long to read through it. Where it really earns it's five stars is EVERY major cast member is given a full 10 to 12 pages to talk about their character (yes, including Cillian) so you really get the actors' insight and incredibly BEAUTIFUL photos adorn every page. Mostly, they overwhelm every page - if I'm being honest!
With insights from the writer, director/s and production crew, the first Peaky Blinders official book is not some mere cheap cash in, it's obvious they wanted to give something back to the fans with this.
You owe it to yourself to pick this up.

April 19, 2021(alert: ! This is not so much a review as a farewell to one of my favorite characters, Polly Gray).
Helen Mcrory played many roles, but none so fitting as that of Polly Gray in the British crime drama Peaky Blinders.
Imperious, fiercely loyal, and a leader in her own right, Polly provided an interesting counterpoint to the calm and calculating demeanor of Tommy Shelby.
'We survived the war while you were gone,' she reminds Tommy.
In the early part of the series when the group was still struggling to survive in Birmingham, Polly served as part advisor to Tommy and part devil's advocate.
She was there to support the Blinders, but she would do it in her own way. Perhaps of all the Blinders she was the only one who could criticize Tommy without being mocked or belittled.
Later on, when the Shelby gang had gone beyond the borders of Birmingham after defeating rival gangs, Polly seemed the least materialistic of the group, being more concerned with reestablishing a relationship with her long lost son Michael.
Though there was always some tenderness in her relationship with Michael, it would never make her soft. Polly was always a fighter, and more so when the survival of the Blinders was at stake. She wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet in the head of those who went after them.
Seen through the prism of the series, Polly Gray is many things---advisor, mother, and fighter--famous for the line 'Don't f**k with the Peaky Blinders.'
As a fan of the series, I like to think that Polly Gray hasn't really died. That, like Tommy Shelby she too has cheated death, as the writers of the series often play tricks on us.
The truth is that I will miss her badly. And if its true that there is life after death, Polly has probably gone on ahead of us---to stake out a place for the Blinders in the afterlife. An imperious presence and a fighter to the end.

Es un libro-documental muy bueno sobre la serie. Explica desde los primeros inicios del productor hasta la temporada 5. Da información sobre los personajes y lugares, además de muchas curiosidades. Lo que no me ha gustado es que los personajes como John Shelby y Finn Shelby no tienen ni una foto ni un capítulo donde hablen de ellos... Es una cosa muy extraña, pues son personajes muchos más importantes en la familia y en la serie a como lo puede ser el padre Jeremia o Michael. Un poco decepcionado en este aspecto. Por lo demás, las fotos en alta calidad de Thomas Shelby son para en marcar.

Me encanto este libro, las imágenes son fascinantes! Si eres fan de esta serie como yo, te encantará el libro. Contiene entrevistas con los actores, imágenes detrás de cámaras, como se dio la idea de la trama, datos interesantes, la playlist de todas las temporadas y el punto de vista de cada actor acerca de su personaje. Simplemente lo ame. Peaky Blinders es una increíble serie al igual que este libro y siempre será de mis favoritos.❤️

This will only be of interest if you're a fan of the show. It includes interviews with the actors, producers and others involved as well provides an overview of each season. There are also some gorgeous colour photographs and a bit of the history of the real Peaky Blinders. Definitely worth a 'peak' if you enjoy the show.

Who would have ever thought I would like a book about a group of bounders called the Peaky Blinders? Maybe it's because their outfits and haircuts are so sharp! (Pun intended--for those who don't understand, the Peaky Blinders had razor blades sewn into their caps.)

Peaky Blinders is my favourite television drama at the moment. It’s a great show, with high drama, violence and emotion. Even though the Peaky Blinders are gangsters, you can’t help but be invested in them and want them to succeed. This is the book for the fans, looking at the story from the creation through to the end of series four. (Series five came to the screens in 2019, and season six is coming…)
The companion book is organised in a logical fashion, with the story starting with Steven Knight’s creation of the series. It’s based on the stories told to him as a youngster in Birmingham along with his experiences. The brief for Peaky Blinders is to make it larger than life, with great clothes, sets and drama. The book then discusses the plot of each series, interspersed with each of the actors of the main character talking about their character in the first person. It’s a unique way of doing this and it really shows the depth of research and knowledge each actor has of their character, down to the small costume details you can’t see and the mannerisms. (For example, should Tommy touch Polly’s arm? Or is that too weird? Does Tommy Shelby actually cry?) All the major characters are covered but I kind of wish Sam Neill (Major Campbell) and Tom Hardy (Alfie Solomons) had been included. Even though their time was limited/they had smaller roles, it would have been fascinating to hear their thoughts. (Especially Sam Neill, as his character just got more and more repulsive – how does he manage?) A collection of Alfie’s quotes would have been great too, but I see that the internet has that covered. I am glad to see that others love Arthur as much as I do!
The book also covers the sets – Birmingham, the canals, Tommy’s mansion and the betting shop. Of course, there is a section devoted to the fashion – and the Peaky haircuts. And it wouldn’t be a Peaky Blinders book without information on the music, which really is like another character. There is a list of the music used in the series, what makes a song ‘Peaky’ and how it adds to the characters’ thoughts and motivations. (Knowing some of the songs well, I can confirm that the lyrics definitely fit in with the action and I will never not think of Tommy when I hear The Last Shadow Puppets’ Bad Habits).
Does the book give additional insight for the hardcore fan? Yes, but in areas other than the plot which is fairly general in its rundown. But you know that you have to have it, by order of the Peaky Blinders.

A really interesting insight into the Peaky world, from the historical context to the decisions behind the costumes and haircuts. It is insane how much influence the show had on current fashion trends. All in all, it made me appreciate how much effort goes into making a large scale production. Time to re-watch the show!

Un excellent livre pour les fans de la série, c'est très bien présenté et riche en informations sur le tournage, les recherches des différentes équipes, les acteurs... J'ai vraiment beaucoup aimé et je le conseille aux fans de la série.

What a book to finish off 2019! An actual physical book too instead of my kindle! I can say I spent my New Year's Eve with the Peaky F***ing Blinders! And I loved every minute! For someone who only discovered this series at Season Five and then had to download the previous four seasons, this was brilliant.
I would also say for any Peaky Blinders fan, this book is a must! You get behind the scenes shots and the actors talking about the characters that they bring to life!

O carte foarte buna pentru fanii serialului. Exista si viziunea actorilor asupra personajelor sale, si a lui Steven Knight (scenaristul) asupra ideei care sta la baza. De asemenea, multe imagini fascinante si detalii deapre crearea imaginii Peaky Blinders.

If you love Peaky Blinders you will love reading about the magic from behind the scenes, how the stories are taken from real stories heard when the writer was just a kid and transformed into this wonderful show that never cease to impress.
Beautiful reading also about how the costumes, the sets, the music are chosen with the utmost care but my favorite parts was reading how the actors talk about their characters like they are real people they love and protect.
My favorite part was the way Paul (Arthur) speaks of his love for Tommy. On set, he and Cillian see themselves as their characters and so he feels protective of Cillian the way Arthur is of Tommy cause Tommy is who he sees when he is on set.

Окремі розділи присвячено саундтреку, локаціям, стилю, а також логіці розгортання сюжету кожного сезону (на момент створення книжки їх вийшло 4). Всі хвалять Стівена, Кілліана Мерфі і Хелен Маккрорі.
Ще під час перегляду мені дуже сподобався спосіб, у який в серіалі працюють з історією. Виявилося, що це свідома і цілеспрямована спроба створити Міф про британський міжвоєнний період — героїзувати, романтизувати, гламуризувати, як американці свою "епоху джазу" чи ковбоїв. І що раніше у британському кіно про working class було прийнято говорити з позицій критичного реалізму, жахатись і жаліти.
(Коли це букмекери стали working class?— спитаю я. Але британцям видніше :)
Йдеться не про підміну понять чи переписування історії. Колись я слухала лекцію українського історика Ярослава Грицака про Міфи як сюжети в колективній свідомості. Гадаю, це щось близьке до Архетипу, тільки якщо Архетип — образ, то Міф — оповідь. Визначальна ознака Міфу — сакральна правда, щось фольклорне, на рівні вірувань і переказів, які не піддаються сумніву.
З цим у Peaky Blinders все ок, починаючи з легенди про леза, вшиті в картузи. Ці та інші дані Стівену Найту передали мама-тато, які росли в Бірмінгемі і своїми дитячими очима спостерігали паби, фабричний дим, коней і човни, вантажені контрабандою. Сам він пише, що “вивчав джерела” — тогочасну пресу і поліцейські звіти, але принципово не книги по історії. Так само з Бірмінгема растафаріанський поет Бенджамін Зефанайя — він погодився зіграти вуличного пророка, бо описані в сценарії атмосфера ромських таборів, контри з копами та ІРА відповідали спогадам його юності.
Я спіткнулась на ознаці 4: не підкоряється відчуттю лінійного часу. Тут наче навпаки — ми зустрічаємо героїв після повернення з Great War і події розгортаються у повній злагоді з хронологією. Але… Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead та інші— звучать в серіалі постійно, доречно і, як продюсери в цій книжці, нагадують: це вам не period drama.
Про ознаку 5 — ідентифікує спільноту — мені треба поговорити з британцями ;) Але Хелен Маккрорі каже, що лондонські хіпстери вже давно стрижуться в стилі Peaky.
Грицак вважає, що в постмодерні часи Міф набуває ще більшого значення, аніж в традиційному суспільстві. За цим дуже цікаво спостерігати.

Але… Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead та інші— звучать в серіалі постійно, доречно і, як продюсери в цій книжці, нагадують: це вам не period drama.
Про ознаку 5 — ідентифікує спільноту — мені треба поговорити з британцями ;) Але Хелен Маккрорі каже, що лондонські хіпстери вже давно стрижуться в стилі Peaky.
Грицак вважає, що в постмодерні часи Міф набуває ще більшого значення, аніж в традиційному суспільстві. За цим дуже цікаво спостерігати.

This was enjoyable to read, im glad I finally got around it, after loving the show for years. I do wish there was more behind the scenes information on the creation of the show, then there was, because I find that stuff fascinating.
But I loved the information we got and I really loved that the actors had a few pages to have a essay on their own characters, the parts of their character arcs were important to them and their own opinions.

Really excellent book. It's not just a photo album of the set, although there are some gorgeous photos in here. But more importantly, it includes thoughtful and creative essays by the cast, as well as true stories and historically accurate background information about 1920s Birmingham. Excellent read, will definitely read again!

Without a doubt, the best book and series that I have seen and read in my entire life, both are incredible, I just wait for the sixth and last season of the peaky blinders, the shelby family is a family that I love how it is with the members and with his workers, but thomas shelby is the king without a crown.
