A sexy, provocative thriller that centers on a hot young star whose career takes a tragic turn when he is convicted for a crime committed out of desperation just before his ascent to stardom.
Danny, a stunningly handsome movie idol, struggles to regain his status as a Hollywood superstar after his astonishing fall from grace leaves him jailed and ostracized. From a dusty encampment in the Arizona desert, to the erotic film sets of the Czech Republic, to the dizzying heights of Hollywood's entertainment industry, this page-turning roller coaster read is filled with shocking twists and totally unexpected turns.
Intriguing, eye-opening, poignant, and at times even laugh-out-loud funny, Danny Smashed is a truly riveting Hollywood coming of age story that is impossible to put down.
I really liked this book. There weren't actual chapter numbers, but there were plenty of good stopping points to take a break.
Danny Smash is a really cool character. He ends up in a commune in the desert with his mom. She ends up dying, and leaves her son in the hands of a pervert. Danny ends up getting molested for quite a few years by the commune leader (this part of the book really made me sick TBH). Unfortunately, Danny makes a couple of stupid decisions (stealing money from his girlfriend and a bunch of elderly people). But he does end up paying everyone back and does do some time behind bars.
I feel like he did make up for his sins. Apparently Simon LeFleur (the grandson of one of Danny's victims) does not think Danny has gotten what he deserves. Unfortunately, Simon's grandfather ends up dying of a heart attack or stroke (sorry, I don't remember and I'm too lazy to go back HAHA), and Simon thinks Danny is responsible for this.
Let me tell you, Simon and his mother are pieces of crap. I do not like either person. Simon is a lazy piece of garbage and that doesn't even account for his stunt he pulls near the end of the book. He is an adult who still lives at home and has anger issues. If someone cuts him off in traffic, he thinks it's okay to try to run the person off the road. Or if something goes wrong in his day he just smashes his cell phone. And his dumb-ass mother just enables all of this behavior.
Note to the author: you need to write a follow up book. Simon and his mother should be punished and it made me mad that wasn't addressed in this book. Simon is a lazy man-baby that stinks and lays around in his mom's basement and plays in computer chatrooms all day. Can you tell I don't like this guy???
And!!!! And....I need to know if Danny and his son end up having a relationship.
I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy reading about characters that can reinvent themselves.
Interesting reading, more centered in dark storytelling, Danny Smashed is a page-turner with an LGBTQ slant. Well developed characters and an adventurous story line bring together some fascinating hours of reading pleasure. Danny or Daniel? Reinvention and self discovery and acceptance are the keys.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
