Spellcaster Academy #1

Spellcaster Academy: Magical Realism, Episode 1

Rate this book
Magic is real… Too bad I suck at it.

I was a freak from day one – the orphaned, weird kid with ghost-white hair tends to stick out like a sore thumb. So, when a mystery aunt invites me to start a new life, I don’t ask questions. I board a plane. Pronto.

But surprise! *insert sarcasm* It’s all a lie and a bizarre lady in a dusty junk shop basically shoves me into a closet… and I tumble into a magical world.

Which might be awesome, if I weren’t a freak there too. Apparently, at Borealis Academy, my powerful uncle… who I don’t know… wants to blow up the world or something.

*spoiler* He’s the bad guy who wants me to join him in the destruction.

Thank the stars, the academy can't kick me out unless I'm unable to master magic – which, unfortunately, is even more difficult than it sounds.

One bright spot is my broody, hot spellcasting tutor required to help up my skills. Although, he seems to have his own aggravating secrets.

If he’d just let me get close enough I think we could help each other solve our problems.

But my magical and romance troubles are only just beginning when my dark family past catches up with me. Now, I must quickly master my powers, or it could lead to a far worse fate than expulsion…

Since it might be up to me to save everyone.

Thank you to Jenetta Penner for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. This does not change my opinion in any way.

When I got the chance to read an arc of the new series Jenetta Penner wrote I thought I’d give it a chance. They are written as episode style books so each story you read could be like an episode on a tv show. I find that an interesting concept. They are meant to come out every month so I am curious to see how that will work out. I also just really liked the cover because there are floating books around the character, okay. I am weak like that.

Spellcaster Academy stars us of with Josy. Recently her grandmother died, the one person who took care of her. She gets an invite from her aunt to come live with her. Or so she thinks. Instead she is plunged into an academy to learn magic. Straight away she is an outcast for the color of her hair. What is the meaning behind that?

If you think this sounds typical it is because it is. The magic academy, the bitchy classmate, being the underdog. However that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. When I started reading this book I knew what I was getting into and my expectations for a fun and quick read and that is what I got. Also this book is written as an episode and as such is only 90 pages long. There is still a lot left to be discovered where just wasn’t any room for here.

I will say however that the world building needs some work. This episode takes place over a few weeks and I do not have a good grasp on the academy or what they teach. I really hope that there will be some more focus on that instead of on inner monologues.

I also quite like the character. Josey is who she is. Despite the setbacks she just goes along for the ride. What other choice does she have? She isn’t quite so worried about being popular. So I have high hopes for the continued development of her character. However the true shiner of this book has to be Nine. Nine is a talking cat and he gives the book an extra magical boost with a bit of a sarcastic quip here.

So if you are looking for an easy magical read you can read a bit of every month, give this one a chance!

This was a really great start to the Spellcaster Academy series! Josy believes she’s an orphan until hope of having an aunt comes in the form of a mysterious letter with an address. As it turns out, it’s actually the address to Borealis Academy of Magical Arts. She’s thrown into a magical world that she never knew existed with her cat, Nine, who can suddenly talk. Josh seems to have no magical powers, Aspen, her student-tutor, refuses to help her pass Introduction to Spellcasting, and everyone seems fearful and prejudice to her since she seems to be a Morelli, a person who wields evil magic. Josy must figure out how to tap into her magic, prove to everyone that she isn’t evil, and learn more about a world that she doesn’t understand. I liked the friendships that she formed with Marigold and Eniko and that they chose to take a chance to know her instead of shunning her. Nine definitely gave this book a special touch and more enjoyable with his personality. This book was filled with mystery, intrigue, and many secrets waiting to be discovered.
Aimee did a really good job with this narration! She speaks at a steady pace and does many voices variations and accents for each character to bring her performance to life.

Magical Realism is the first episode in the Spellcaster Academy series by Jenetta Penner. It's about Josy who is an orphan. After the death of the woman who she tought was her grandmother she receives a letter of a long lost aunt. With her cat Nine she goes to the address from the note she got. After arriving there, there is no long lost aunt. Only a weird shop with a passage to a world she never knew excisted.

I really liked the beginning of Josy's story. I also really like Nine and Aspen. Can't wait to read how their story continues.

Great Acadamy book! "This was an audible book that I listened to"
This is a great book! It has mystery, magic and action. This book sets up the story for Josey's journey. There is intrigue and mystery which kept me staying with the book. it is easy to follow and the narrator is perfect. her voice set the book up perfectly for me to get a great understanding of Josey. A lot of things happen that need questions answered which most were but some still left open. The story does pick up in the end and leaves with you wanting to know more of what will happen.

Fun read

I really enjoyed reading and listening to this book. While it's a quick read, it is still a great story with a lot happening in it.
Having no idea that she has magic or even that it's real, finding herself at a magical academy was not exactly what Josy expected when she went to meet her new found family. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Academy books seem to be all the hype lately and while I always enjoyed academy type stories, I haven't picked one up in a while. Something about Spellcaster Academy kept catching my attention, so when the author offered review copies I decided to give it a try.

Spellcaster Academy is a fantasy academy series that follows the story of Josy Barrows. It's a series with shorter books or episodes, which so far seems to work here. This episode had a clear begin and end and the length seemed about right, although it did feel a tad too quick paced at times. Josy Barrows has no one left, she's an orphan and her only living relative her grandma just died and now all she has left is a mysterious letter about an aunt. There is no aunt and instead she finds herself in a magical world and enrolled in a magical academy. It quickly turns out she stands out a bit because of her white hair. She can't do magic at all, but at least she has a talking cat and a ghostly roommate.

Spellcaster Academy was fun enough, but it just didn't pull me in. There was nothing that really kept my attention. But at the same time there also isn't anything that really didn't work for me. It's just one of those just okay reads, that were fun enough to read, but nothing outstanding. It was a bit typical or cliche at times, fitting nicely in the tropes you expect from an academy book. The main character is a bit of a special snowflake. But there were some unique twists too.

I was afraid this book would be merely an introduction to the series with the episode format, but the pacing was quite well done and there is a scene toward the end that I hadn't expected in book 1 and which upped the danger and tension. The pace is fast, but didn't feel rushed most of the time. It does goes quite fast and there are plenty of subjects that aren't fully explored yet, but as this is just the first episode I am sure that will be more explored in later books.

I thought Josy was a fun enough main character. She doesn't know she can do magic and knows little abut her parents. She finds out her cat can actually talk and that there is a whole other world of magic. Then she learns even more secrets and there are some reveals when she spends some time at the academy. I like how she wasn't as good at magic at first, but by the end of the book something happens that makes me think she will be quite the special magic user after all sadly. She seemed open minded enough and I like how she went after what she believed in, but most of the time she was quite a normal person actually.

I like Nine, the talking cat. And then there is Josy's roommate who seemed nice too, but I have the feeling there is much more to her than we know so far. There also is a teacher who seems quite friendly. And there is a love interest for Josy. The love interest Aspen is a bit of an outcast too and seems willing to help her. Their relationship even progresses quite a bit in this book already.

It's hard to say much about the world as with everything going on and the fast pace there isn't as much room for world building. I liked the idea of the two separate realms and how people can travel between them. Everyone seemed to have a different magical specialty, which was an interesting touch. Besides that it's hard to fully get a grip on things yet. The world building is quite limited, but there is enough to follow the story, just not enough to make the world come alive yet.

To summarize: this was a decent start to this new series. It was a nice enough read, but didn't fully pull me into the story, then again there also wasn't anything that really bothered me. The pace is quite fast, but didn't feel too rushed most of the time. There is a big event at the end of this book, which I hadn't expected and it was quite interesting. Josy was a nice main characters to read about, although she is a bit of an outcast and special snowflake. I liked her cat Nine and her roommate seemed nice too. There is a love interest and their relationship progresses a bit too. The world building is quite limited, but there's enough to understand the story, just not enough to have a clear picture of everything yet. If you enjoy fantasy academy style stories this one might be for you.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

This is the first episode in the Spellcaster Academy series. I enjoyed this audiobook. It seems like a fun introduction to what could be an interesting series. The balance of giving information about the world, but not giving too much away seems good. It is generally well written, the main characters seem likeable. My one criticism about the writing itself is the overuse of phrases like “my stomach roiled” and “my heart dropped to my stomach”, to the point where there’s at least one in every paragraph. Obviously, this is an adventurous book, but I prefer books that mix it up a bit, and sometimes describe the emotions instead of just the physical sensations. This may be more obvious in the audio version.

The narration was good, the expression/emphasis is generally excellent. The character voices were very good, but I found the general narration sounded a little stilted or robotic in places. I’m from the UK, so this may just be an American accent thing, but none of the character voices sounded like this.

Overall, a solid first episode. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a muggle discovering magical world type adventure, with a talking cat! It seems a little too dramatic for my personal taste, but for those who like slightly more excitement, it’d be spot on.

I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

A friend recommend this book to me. I was not disappointed. A very good, quick read. Josy has had a ruff life for such a young age. Your heart has to go out to her for all she has gone through. The struggles of being a teenage is hard enough but Josy finds herself without a family and in a new world she had no clue she was a part of. There is a lot going on in this book to get us a foundation for the story to go on. I hope she finds she fits in here better then she ever fit in anywhere else.

Josy, an orphan who recently lost her grandmother, receives an invite of sorts to live with an unknown aunt along with a plane ticket. Well, there is no aunt and although the address was difficult to find it turns out to be a junk shop..... or is it?
Josy hesitantly finds herself on the ground of an academy with her cat, Nine, and did he just talk? Josy discovers magic is real and guess what, she possesses some but what's with the fear & hatred because of her hair colour?

Josy is a very likeable character who finds herself on the side of magic. She, along with fellow students and Aspens help, tries to find and learn to use her magic. She needs to find it in order to remain in the academy. I love the ghostly roommate. The book grips you pretty much from the window wipers in the downpour (read to understand) to the very end. Of course I wish it was a full length novel but it works as an individual episode and I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to see where the series takes us.

I was gifted an advance copy but willingly opted to leave this review.

I’m really glad that the author gave me a copy of this, because I loved it! Truthfully, it was a bit slow at first. And there were a lot of questions that I wanted answered. Many of them were eventually, but there are enough left that I feel compelled to read more. Since it’s only episode one, I was bracing myself for a cliffhanger. I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn’t. Obviously there is much more to the story, but it left off at a nice in-between place. I can tell that the story is only just beginning and I am looking forward to much more magic and mischief in future episodes.

**I reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book**

First of all...Wow! This is definitely a fantastic story. Josy's character was written so beautifully. She's not a perfect girl, she doesn't have all the answers, she's slowly growing into who she's meant to be and I will definitely be looking forward to reading her story!
The storyline is rich and full of energy, the other characters are are worthy and the world building is unique and fun!

Josy Barrows lost her parents when she was a baby, being raised by her grandmother until she passes. Now, Josy is an orphan with no where to go next, until a mysterious aunt sends an invitation for Josy to go live with her. Jumping at the chance to explore new family, Josy and her cat Nine journey to find the address her aunt sent her.

Except there is no house. There is no aunt. But what Josy finds is much more interesting.

Josy finds out she was invited to attend Borealis Academy of Magical Arts, despite her lack of magic and her slim knowledge of why she was invited to study magic in the first place. The first episode of Spellcaster Academy introduces a magical world filled with hidden secrets, unwanted fate and magical problems that Josy must conquer in order to pass her classes, and survive the new world she has stumbled upon.

This story, as a whole, was super entertaining. The writing was clear and concise and drew me in from the first chapter. The story line was easy to follow and undeniably magical, leaving me feeling like a child again, watching Harry Potter for the first time.

The narrator was great, and made listening to this audio easy on the ears. There are some narrators I just cannot get into, despite how much I like the story, but Aimee McKenzie made the story more than just an easy read. She captured my attention right away and voiced Josy perfectly, and it was so easy to follow along so I did not get lost once (which happens often). I did not want to turn it off and listened to the whole thing in one sitting!

Honestly, this audio book read just like a movie, and the whole three hours was like I was sitting in a theater watching it unfold.

Now, despite how much I love the audio book (and how much I want the second episode), I feel obligated to share why I didn’t give it the last star.

The story was pretty cliche, in both the magical world and the academy world. Without spoilers, the main character lost her parents, is invited to a magical academy where she is more than she appears, is the odd-one out/semi-hated until she has a redeeming moment, and has the attention of a super good looking guy. Not to mention the focus was almost all on the characters and the world itself lacked some description and development.

But am I complaining? No. I will read cliches over and over again and love it every time. I will fall in love with the totally expected couple and be so happy when they get together. I will watch our hero/heroine get the shit end of the stick until they tap into their magical ability. I will completely enjoy the different versions of the same magical world that everyone loves to read/write about. There is nothing wrong with cliches, especially when they are so damn fun to read about again and again.

In fact, I’d be totally disappointed if I didn’t get to encounter the different tales of common troupes. And the small amounts of description was what helped the audio-book be easy to follow along with, and what helped it read like a movie or TV episode.

That being said, I’d recommend Spellcaster Academy to anyone who loves these magical academies as much as I do! I cannot speak for the eBook version, but the audio-book made this story for me, and would suggest the audio version to everyone who is interested!

“Josy Barrows. We’ve been searching for you. It’s time to reclaim your place.” - Zayne Gabrick

Josephine Barrows is an orphan who has recently lost her grandmother. Faced with a stark choice to either go into foster care or accept an invitation by Olivia Spinner, an aunt that Josy never knew she had, Josy chooses the latter. With her scarce belongings as well as her cat, Nine, Josy sets out on her journey only to discover that Oliver Spinner is not a person but a password to a world she never knew existed. Now Josy finds herself enrolled at the secret Borealis Academy Of Magical Arts, her scholarship payed in full by a mysterious benefactor.

The reception she receives is initially hostile due to her ghost white hair which is a trait of the Morelli, a group of people who were feared and shunned by the magic society hundreds of years ago. Josy comes to realise that she must embrace her magical heritage in order to stop the Morelli who are intent on destroying the balance between both Sides. When the Academy comes under attack, shocking revelations come to light including the identity of the mysterious benefactor...

Magical Realism is the first episode of the Spellcaster Academy series and was my first introduction to the author. While the book did fall into the usual cliches of Academy books, I found myself intrigued by the authors world building. We have The Side Of Magic, The Middle and The Other Side which consists of humans or Commons. The Middle is inhabited by the Four Points: Mrs North, Mrs South, Mrs East and Mrs West, who are immortal gatekeepers that keep a record of everyone who comes in and out. The Morelli were originally born on the Side of Magic, but due to a genetic abnormality which made their hair white, they were feared and shunned by the magic society. Somehow they found an alternative route into the Middle and for hundreds of years have remained in hiding growing in numbers and strength as well as resentment. While their leader wanted war, other Morelli wanted to peacefully join magic society. It seems that Josy’s parents were among the latter.

While Josy is an appealing relatable protagonist, it was her talking cat Nine, however, who stole the show. I loved their interaction. The inclusion of a ghostly roommate was also clever and I look forward to learning more about Merrygold and the reasons why she has been stuck in Room 104 for the past five years.

The book flows at a steady pace and held my interest. My only gripe was that it was in episodic form which can be quite expensive when it’s a lengthy series. Apart from that I thought it was an encouraging start to what looks to be a promising series which will appeal to fans of Harry Potter and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I received an advanced free audible copy of Magical Realism that was narrated by Aimee McKenzie. I was impressed by the way she was masterfully able to bring each character to life with their own unique voice, switching effortlessly between characters and accents.

And a strange owner with a cryptic message who hurries Josy to the back of the shop—
Into a world she never knew existed.

With no friends and no magical abilities, Josy can’t stay at the academy if her hot, Enchantment 101 student-tutor, Aspen Rivers keeps refusing to help her pass.
Just when things couldn’t get worse, she may have discovered dark secrets about the academy…
Secrets which could lead to a worse fate than expulsion… one that threatens both The Side of Magic and the regular world she grew up in.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Josy Barrows has had a difficult life. First loosing her parents, but her Grandmother was there for her until she became sick leaving Josy to care for her. Now all on her own with only her memories and her cat Nine on a trip to find her Aunt Olivia. Now finding her was nearly impossible, but what Josy finds will change everything she ever knew. You see Olivia isn’t a person, but a password to a world she never expected. You see Josy is admitted into Borealis Academy of the Magical Arts.

This is Josy’s first step into a world she never expected or knew about. This is just the beginning of Josy learning about her past and the dangers inherit in her new world.

This was an incredible saga the likes only seen in the Hogwarts world. Josy finds new friends, enemies, and what her place is in the magical world. I for one can’t wait to see what happens next.

Great Story & Audible Listen🎧 Enjoyable & Imaginative!

Spellcaster Academy
Magical Realism, Episode 1
By: Jenetta Penner
Narrated by: Aimee McKenzie

This is a great first book to a new series, it well written and well told with interesting characters and storylines. Jenetta Penner creates an imaginative world where magic and supernatural beings exists. The lead character, Josy Barrow, thinks she has no family left after her grandmother passes, she receives a plane ticket and a note directing her to an address. She heads there with her cat nine. When she finally finds the place she is supposed to be she not sure why she is even there but she just goes with the flow. I loved how everything plays out, she learns who she is, what she can do and it is the start of a whole new world and life for her. She has a lot to learn about the dynamics of the magical world she is now part of but she is in the right place for learning, the Spellcaster Academy. This is never a dull moment in this book, it is fast paced and great for any age. I am looking forward to what comes next for Josy as she learned more about herself and her powers. Jenetta Penner, thank you for this great story.

I listened to the Audible edition, Aimee McKenzie is a terrific narrator and voice performer. She brings these characters to life, gives each their own unique voice and personality. She does a great job using different accents and switches characters flawlessly. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧

Josy lived among humans all her life, so much so that she did not imagine being anything else but a human, too. However, after her grandma passed and she received a mysterious letter with strange address and a flight ticket, she had no other choice but to follow the instructions - or be taken into foster care. Not in her wildest dreams would she imagine ending up in a magical academy. Though the legacy seems to be following her here as well - treated as a freak, weirdo, threat, danger, liability, or useless without magic. All because of her strange white hair setting her off as a Morelli.
From all the academy books that appeared lately and I have read, Magical realism belongs to the best ones. Instantly pulling the reader into the story, the storytelling sets up the right atmosphere from the first page, promising all there is to be found in YA fantasy book - great magic, obstacles to access it, mortal danger impersonated partially by the main character, eternal war between the good and the evil, and sweet high school romance with a bit of drama. All can be found in this fast paced novella with lots of twists and tension, some adventure, and darkness peaking from the pages. With Josy ending up in a very unpredictable situation now, with only her cat, one of the professors, and her tutor Aspen surely on her side, I would love to see how the enemy would react and how Josy will develop her magical abilities, now that she finally has them.

A good start

I enjoyed this short story, the series storyline is interesting. I hope we get a lot more details moving forward. This book was very light on information and I don't like being in the dark for an entire book. I'd like some character background, some world-building and a reason to cheer on the heroine. Currently she seems strong or could just be in shock. She doesn't much personality yet.

The h Josey was raised by her grandmother. Her parents died when she was very young. She is seventeen and her grandmother has just passed. She gets a letter from a long lost aunt along with plans ticket. She gets to the address and only finds it due to her cat Nine. The cat has the most personality so far. She is shoved into a world she never knew existed. She is supposedly part of a clan of evil something that they called the Morelli. They are identified by white hair, which she has, and she is shunned for it. Seemingly no one wants to help her at first. A few students change their mind, but we aren't told why. So suddenly she has friends, but their was no relationship building entries.

This ends on a cliffhanger, but the entire series is out. You will need to read in order, they are not standalone books with individual stories within overall ARC. They are segments of a completed book/series.

Will read the next in series because they are quick reads and the story has potential. Potential love interest Aspen and potential friends are Holly and Emiko.

One can’t help but compare the magical academy books to Harry Potter. And this one has more parallels than most. It has the young orphaned student who thought herself normal for her entire life and then suddenly told she has magic and enrolled at a mysterious school where she gets to learn all about that world. She also finds out that she is special within that world. She is mostly a loner, but manages to gather a small group of friends, who she mostly doesn’t rely on during the most dangers parts of the adventure. There is also a professor who has taken a particular shine to her. And like the beginning of the Harry Potter series, this story feels like it’s pitched at a young middle-grade audience. This also has the whimsical of the Harry Potter series, with plenty of cute touches along the way and a showdown with a dangerous force at the end of the episode. I did like Aspen, the teacher’s assistant who tried to help Josy. He had enough detail in his character to make him rounded enough. Nine the cat is a fun character. And her neighbors were colorful enough. The mean-girl felt rather cliché, as did the villains themselves. And Josy herself felt a bit sparse on personality as well as the world felt like it had less depth than one of the Potter books. In all though, it’s a cute adventure and would appeal to fans of the first couple of Harry Potter books who are itching for a female lead.

Written in episodes, I found I took to this book and enjoyed every minute of the story!
Josy was brought up like a normal girl by her grandmother. When her grandmother died she was left with her best friend, her cat 9 and a strange note from an aunt she never knew she had. With the note, she was given an address and a plane ticket. Being alone all of a sudden, she decided she had nothing to lose. When she and 9 finally get to the address, she is shocked to see it is a junk shop. Upon entering the shop, she is rushed through some hidden doors into a whole new magical world, looked like a private school. She finds it is the Magical Academy. Upon first being confronted by some students who seen to not like her and take to her with suspicion where 9 has to come to her rescue, she is totally baffled. Also, now all of a sudden 9 can speak. Being taken under one of the magic teacher's wing and given a tutor who at first finds her a nuisance, she is being taught that she has magic and now has to learn how to use them. But, everyone seems to be against her with her white hair they think she is a Morelli who want to take over the world, both magical and non-magical. Will Josy be able to harness the magic she never knew she had? Will the school get attacked because of her Morelli background? We are left with a good cliff-hanger as we await episode 2! I received an ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

What a cute audiobook!

Spellcaster Academy is about a girl named Josy, who has nothing left after her family's death. Nothing, that is, save for her cat and a note from an aunt she's never met, inviting her to live with her.

Everything goes sideways for Josy pretty early on and she is flung into a world of magic and spellcasting.

If you're a fan of middle-grade to young-adult books filled with magic and mystery and talking cats, this one's for you. It also resonates well with any reader who has ever felt different and out-of-place, especially in school.

The only thing I will say is that the narrator doesn't do male voices well. It's a common issue I've noticed, so I'm not going to speak harshly about it. It's just something I noticed that pulled me out of the story until I got used to it.

In one day Josy becomes an orphan. Left with the choice of foster care, or follow an odd note to a before unknown relative she chooses the note. Josy and her only remaining family...Nine the cat make it to the area of said address but can't find it. In a strange town where she knows nobody Josy doesn't know what to do... Until Nine escapes his carrier and runs off. To her surprise when she follows him she finds a junk shop with the address from the note. Crazy stuff is happening. Within moments she's thrust into a new world filled with magic, and SURPRISE she's apparently a part of it. Follow Josy and Nine on this new adventure with magic. Who are friends, who are her foes? And what the heck does having white hair have to do with anything? I look forward to seeing where this story goes!

I received an ARC of this in return for an honest review. I love the YA paranormal genre and, having read and enjoyed a couple of Ms Penner's previous books, was looking forward to reading her latest 'series-style' offering. I was a little disappointed to find that the writing seemed to be aimed more at the pre/early teen reader age group. I liked the concept, the characters (especially Nine), and the story itself, but I just felt it was written in overly-simplified language and tone (occasionally even a little patronising), and was not a particularly exciting or challenging YA read in any way. I'll continue to read the series, in the hope that it improves, but I'm not entirely sure the story is strong enough to keep me reading to the end if it doesn't.

Josy grew up with her grandmother as a normal girl. When her grandmother dies, she is sent a letter to come live with a great aunt she knew nothing about. But this is really an invitation to a Magical Academy. Josy has no magic, can't do spells, and the other students and faculty fear her because she has white hair which denotes being a Morelli, which means she has bad magic. I loved seeing how Josy was able to change a few students minds and see that she isn't evil and has a good heart. And someone on the faculty is in her corner. But the Morelli want her powers. She must resist and learn to use her powers for good.

Wow! What a wild ride! I think with every new book I read written by Ms Penner, I can feel her talent growing. Josy didn’t realize she had magic. She was invited to enroll in the Spellcaster Academy on full scholarship to learn how to use it. She found out she has a special kind of magic. The kind that some feared and others wanted. When the Academy was attacked the battle was fierce. Very well described such that I could literally feel the tension. Josy had helped save the Academy but not without suffering injuries from the fighting. This was a fantastic read! With magic, a great battle, the beginning of a little romance growing, I anticipate this series to be another winner.

Overall rating: 4.7

A wonderful start to a new YA academy series. This author put her own unique flair to this new academy series with creativity concerning these characters abilities. I can’t name them without exposing spoilers but I will say...it hooked me in and I need to read the next book! Even Nine, the familiar for Josey has his own interesting hidden talents and backstory! Everything hasn’t been uncovered yet as far as mysteries go, but the perfect amount has been unfolded to create a great hook to ensure a reader keeps interested. Looking forward to more! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

Starting Series

Spellcaster Academy is the first book in the new series, Magical Realism. I enjoyed the starting journey Josy takes along with her cat Nine to the world were magic is real. This story is the introduction of Josy and her life as an unsuspecting human and following her as she finds out who she really is and who her parents were. We get a taste of what will later follow in the next books in the series. Learning more about her magic, and the fight with the Morillis. Im excited to see what will happen to Josy and the academy. Come along and follow the journey with us!

Enjoyed getting to know Josy & loved Nine.

Josy is a 17yr. old with only a cat left in the world. Both parents died & her grandma just passed. She has no where to go, until she gets a letter about a great aunt. She has never heard of this aunt, but it's go live with her or go into foster care for a year. So she goes to meet the aunt only to find out that magic is real. Her aunt isn't real & she's been invited to go to a magic school. Things get weird fast as everyone keeps staring at her. Talking about her kind. She has no idea what they mean. SPOILER ALERT; Until her kind start attacking the school.

An orphan seeking family might just have bitten off more than she can chew

A good start. Lots of magic and a power play between the "good" magic users and the "bad". She is a young girl who had looked after her Grandmother until her death. Now all alone she gets a letter telling her to go to see a special person. She makes the trip only to find out that she's enrolled in a magic school, is feared by all because of her white hair, will not be allowed to keep her cat and has no magic. Frustrated and lonely she tries to make friends. However an attack on the school by her "uncle" has her being able to finally tap into her magic. Is it too much to survive?

I was given an ARC at no cost to read and give my opinion. This book was GREAT! I can already tell the Spellcaster Academy series is going to be an excellent series. Magical Realism takes you on a ride to a world full of magic and excitement you won't want to end. The ending of Magical Realism is left open for the next book, but it does not leave you with a cliff hanger! Yes, it leaves you wanting for more, but that's only because the book is so good! It's THAT good! Check it out...you will be so glad you did.

I LOVED THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fast-paced, exciting action filled with magic and mystery - what is not there to love? I could feel Josy's excitement and confusion as she entered this new world, and I enjoyed taking this journey with her. The book manages to avoid several YA cliches that it could have fallen into, and I started and ended this book in one setting. Could not put it down. I can't wait for the next episode.

Note: I reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This did not impact my rating or feedback in any way.
