“He was an out-of-gas soul, sputtering through life, running on fumes. He wanted to be done with it all, but the hand holding the gun, with its saliva-coated muzzle, dropped limply into his lap. With a tired shrug, he slumped to the side, curled into a ball, and closed his eyes. A nap would be fine. Perhaps he’d care enough to try again tomorrow."
Max Tivoli has a broken heart, a cold gun, and a compelling desire to end it all. What he doesn’t have is the ability to pull the trigger. At least not yet. In a last ditch effort to save himself, Max sells everything he owns and buys a bicycle. With no plan, no schedule, and no destination, he abandons his home and pedals away from his old life. Paper Hearts is the story of one man’s struggle to escape his past, find redemption, and maybe—just maybe—discover the will to live again.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but it pleasantly surprised me with a heartwarming tale. The story is centered around a man facing sadness who finds himself in a truly devastating circumstance. An endearing dog along with engaging characters really make this a captivating read. I found myself wishing the story wouldn't end because I was enjoying it so much. This book is going in my fav pile. I laughed. I cried. I loved it so much. This is a quick read that had me feeling all the emotions. Highly recommend.
Steven Hawk penned a fantastic series about a long-dead warrior revived centuries after getting frozen alive to save the human race. The author has a knack for storytelling. He definitely hooked me. So when I saw "Paper Hearts," I immediately clicked the buy button on the Amazon page. I must admit the title threw me a little. But then when I get overly sick of too many sci-fi super-soldier novels or death and horrible people in mystery, I've made a habit of reading romance. Good romance. "Paper Hearts" is definitely not that. Protagonist Max Tivoli has had it with life. His soul mate left him. He hates the neighbors. He contemplates killing himself. Max is an author, a weird lone wolf profession if there ever was one. (Can you imagine an author talking about his day?) Max's creativity dried up when his wife disappeared. He has little interest in doing anything. Then he decides to sell everything he owns and buy a bike. The idea is to get away. Clear his head. The decision launches Max into a journey that will change his life. Hawk has a way of creating characters that appear to be straight out of anytown America. The restaurant owner. The random homeless kid. The surly young woman with a secret. One of the greatest parts of this story is a dog. This book teleported me into Max's weird world. He's a damaged man who may or may not find what he's looking for. It's totally real life.
