Brandt inizia a capire come funzioni l'albero, ritrovo e calamita per fantasmi di tanti secoli morti nelle vicinanze, compreso una specie di guardiano che protegge l'albero e i fantasmi dai demoni. Demoni che odiano più di tutti gli esseri viventi.
Brandt ha modo di vedere la sua vecchia fiamma, come fantasma, e iniziare a parlare con lei, comprendendo che c'è tanto, troppo, ancora da scoprire.
