Yes finally one of the honorable men gets to live! I was beginning to think you was going to kill all of them. To me, I think I would have liked for some more of them to have made it through so many dangerous situations ,so many injuries, and so much cruel hard labor. But in your books for the most part, only the cruel and greedy ones succeed! 😔
If you are interested in reading the same story over and over again, this series is for you. Beaver trapping, Indian attacks, extremely cold winters, battles with 9 foot tall grizzly bears, gold, and conversations between mountain men as nauseam. Foolishly, I read two of these stories and was on my third when I threw the book and yelled, " Enough!!! "
These books take you back to the days of old when our country was being settled out west. Folks were under the assumption that if they went 'out there' they could find huge gold strikes and become wealthy. They didn't realize these lands had belonged to the Indians for centuries and they were not willing to let the 'white eyes' take those lands from them. Ferocious battles ensued with wagon trains obliterated, Indian villages destroyed, and many whites taken as prisoners. They were horrible clashes with the Indians who had 'owned' these lands for centuries .. terrible cruelties were inflicted on both sides. These books put you right in the action of love, hate, horror, and some lasting friendships being formed. Once started, these books are very hard to lay aside .. you just HAVE to know what's going to happen over the hill. The action is so fast and furious that you have a very hard time putting the book(s) down. Put yourself in the time of these Indians and settlers trying to have a new life and escape the North and South. They will keep you entertained for hours and give you a close look at how hard times were, then thank all those pioneers & Mountain Men who forged to the west and helped make our country what it is today. Your freedoms were not a 'given', they were fought and died for. These are DON'T MISS books! READ ON, LITTLE DOGGIES!!
I was so looking forward to reading this series. I liked the first two books, but by the third it was the same story, different characters. Lots of repeating information, several times in the story. Got boring after a while. I almost quite reading after I got to the 4th book, but I struggled through and read all five books. Won't read anymore by this author.
This boxed set supplies the reader with seemingly authentic characters and a historic lesson on the settling of the western us. Easy to read and much enjoyment getting caught up in the various characters in each story.
Love the writing, ger story telling with lots of detail, you feel like your living there, but he kills off the main characters, one by one. That part is horrible. I stopped reading after the two first books.
Great Early Frontier Entertainment and Informative! What a shame our history school books aren't as enjoyable and informative as Terry Grosz' authentic and exciting tales with lots of "how to" sprinkled throughout. A rich mixture of almost fairy tale bliss, sprinkled with deadly challenges and caring people, it also has its fair share of evil.
