Having skipped the first volume of the series since my library didn't have it, I must admit I am now completely lost in these middle chapters of the epic length story. There is a reveal that a masked character from last volume is a character from the cartoon series who was not previously in The Unknown. So this seems to be set after the events of the cartoon and not during? And there is some shapeshifter we need to be worried about? And a pirate? Huh?

After a to-be-continued ending to the adventures of Wirt and Gregory, the last quarter of the book is another poorly drawn, garishly drawn adventure of the origin of Miss Langtree's animal boarding school.

I probably wouldn't have given this volume a shot after not liking volume 1 & 2 but since it's already in kitty collection I decided to give this comic series one vocal shot. I sincerely hoped that this volume would be different and that I would like it a lot more, but that didn't even happen. I was quite reluctant to pick this one up and when I finally did read it I couldn't care less and it never held my attention. But without much further ado here are my thoughts and opinions while reading this:

Hunt for hero frog:

Why does that one girl character have a red face? Why?

I also have to say I honestly don't fucking care about anything. Even the amazingness that's Wirt can't save these comics anymore.

POOR GOAT. Seriously Greg you have to be less judgemental. Greedy goat isn't a nice thing to say at all.

Also, why the sudden appearances of pirates?

WHAHAHA Wirt dressing up as a frog was hilarious though.

The plot is still not interesting & to be honest there isn't much of a plot anyway.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kitty goes to school:
Ughh... I was desperately hoping and wishing that these little comics/stories would disappear but they clearly didn't. #sad
The coloring & art is still super ugly. I feel really bad for saying this since I can't draw for shit and those drawings are definitely better than anythingI could produce. They are, however, still not good looking.
And I'm once again truly surprised and baffled at how bad this story was.
I'm officially done with this series since I once again hated/disliked a volume. It was definitely one of the worst comics I've ever read and definitely the worst out of the three I've read. The serie is simply way superior and actually good, unlike this atrociousness.
My least favourite OtGW so far 🤷🏼‍♀️
(And once again, I didn’t read the additional comics included in these books)
The journey with Wirt, Greg, and Frog Jason is still fun, but I still don't really like the second/third story/stories that follow other characters in the Unknown; please stop showing me characters from the animal school, I'm begging.
This was definitely my least favourite volume. The plot was not as engaging, and I didn't care much for the change in art style, but I still enjoyed it since I love these characters and the world so much.
I'm really enjoying the continuation of the mystery! Who is this frog robber? Will Wirt or Greg be right? Must stay tuned to find out!
This volume deals with the brothers' adventures, and eventually finding their intended goals. For Wirt, it's mainly trying to find and wrangle in Greg, and for Greg to find the "Hero Frog". The Hero Frog, the renowned frog that saved many towns and is Jason the frog's father. Wirt comes across some mismatched birds in Vultureville, and comes across an old friend. Greg meets a character I recall from a Betty Boop cartoon known as the "Old Man of the Mountain"and finds himself a ride to Frog Town. Here we find things are slightly amiss as a shapeshifter and a Pirate Croaker are terrorizing the other neighboring towns. I want to find out if it's all connected in the next volume. A playful side story deals with Ms. Langtree's Boarding School and how the little cat came to be there. It's fun to see the troublemakers and the exemplary students that learn there. Hope to read more in the next installment!
Loving Wirt and Greg's adventure to find Hero Frog but I can definitely see the difference in writing from Vol 1 to Vol 2 & 3.
I wish they continued the Woodsman's daughters story because I don't enjoy the animals story.
Okay, I know more about what these graphic novels are, so I can enjoy the side stories a lot better now. The main story with Wirt, Greg, and Sara (and of course, Jason Funderburker the Frog) searching for the Hero Frog is just one of the stories meant to be a part of the graphic novel collection. The series is meant to delve deeper into the Unknown, exploring other stories in addition, including the schoolhouse and other stories.
So, okay. I need to swallow my disappointment whenever things depart from the Hero Frog story. It's not departing from a main story; it's just exploring another aspect. At least, that's just how I need to think about it, haha.
In this volume, most of the story is filled with the search for the Hero Frog, and I was so delighted with the story! The humor and charm is so similar to the show, and the art styles are adorable. Not to mention we have more SARA. I'm probably going to reread these--especially the parts with Sara. I just love her.
The last story is another schoolhouse story: the smallest cat daughter, Kitty, doesn't fit in with her family. She doesn't like to hunt prey or cook mice. She'd rather read books. So she makes the decision to go to Miss Langtree's boarding school. Only her parents don't expect to miss her so much!
It's a cute story, but that art style still hurts my eyes ... those colors are nearly all bright primaries, and I think the art style is just not for me. I feel bad, but I'm just not a fan.
The bulk of the novel, though? I adore it.
I discuss all five volumes of the Over the Garden Wall Comic Series in the latest entry of my book review essays, Harris' Tome Corner, focusing on Halloween-friendly Kid Horror.
These volumes, featuring writing by Danielle Burgos and Kiernan Sjursen-Lien and illustrations by Jim Campbell and Cara McGee (telling Wirt's and Greg's stories respectively) stick closer to a more whimsical atmosphere and avoid the spookier aspects of OtGW for the most part, mostly following Greg’s quest for the Hero Frog after he wanders back into the Unknown in his dreams, and involves a lot of candy and funny animal people. It's all more Greg than Wirt, you could say. In fact, I think Greg’s story is far better fleshed out here than Wirt, who is more relegated to the b-plots.
This may fit with who these series are specifically aimed for, you know, grade-schoolers. Which is fine! In addition to the Hero Frog quest, each of the comics features a segment focusing on other characters, particularly Ms. Langtree’s classroom of adorable animal schoolchildren, written and illustrated in a kind of lush vintage ambiance by George Mager.
Well, I liked the parts that weren't about the animal school. That was a fine part of the miniseries when it was on Cartoon Network, but I think the 10 or so minutes of that episode were more than enough for me. I totally lost interest once I got to the animal school chapter (once again). I think that's the unfortunate trend in my reading of this comic series.
I just want more of the creepy atmosphere that the show provides. It's very jarring to be placed back in the animal school after following anything that Greg and Wirt get up to. Not only do I have very minimal interest in the animal school itself, but I also don't really like the art style--it is so incredibly different than the way the rest of the series is drawn. I can only say that I'm grateful those parts are fast reads.
With all that being said, I was fairly bored by this volume. I read a little more than half of it in a day and then abandoned it for about a month before I tried to finish it. Not gripping.
The main story is so good and fun, but the smaller stories at the end just weren't fun to read at all this time around. I'm getting impatient just wanting to see how the main story concludes after all the hero frog revelations, and I only just found out the next volume/issues aren't on my Scribd, so I'll have to find another way to read volume 4, unfortunately. Still, this series has been good, I just think more focus should be placed on the main story rather than finishing with these shorter stories, or at least carry on in the way of the first volume and show what other characters were doing during the events of the show. That second story had so much emotion and really furthered the way I looked at the show in the first volume, while the stories set at the school just don't feel relevant in any way from volume 2 onward.
Overall a good volume that continues Wirt and Greg's search for the Hero Frog.
My problem with this one is the same as the last: the bonus comics after the main ones are just not for me. In this volume, we're given more tales from Ms. Langtree's school. They are simple, nonsensical, and not appealing to look at.
However, the bulk story in this is great. Some interesting characters show up, both new and familiar. Adventures are had, mysteries are afoot, and Greg is his same wonderfully loveable self. Enjoyed the artwork and coloring as well.
This would be a great volume if the final story had been omitted. It doesn't do anything for the series as a whole and isn't engaging to read. Looking forward to continuing Greg and Wirt's adventures but could do without the bonus stories at this point.
Sobre la edición de KaBOOM:
Este volumen reúne los números #9 a #12, de la serie de cómics, publicados en 2017. La primera mitad me gustó, la segunda no tanto.
En el cómic #9 un mismo escenario en el que estuvo Greg es mostrado desde la muy diferente perspectiva de Wirt. Lo que para Greg eran un montón de palomas con peluca, para Wirt son buitres. ¡Eso me encantó!
El cómic #10 es otro lindo cuentito de la Escuela Para Animales.
Los cómics #11 y #12 ya no me gustaron tanto debido a que Wirt tiene una nueva compañera en su viaje: Sara (su crush). Este personaje le quita todo ese estilo lúgubre y miedoso que tenían las aventiras de Wirt, que se complementaba perfecto con el estilo alegre y tierno de las aventuras de Greg. Ya no es tan interesante.
The first issue: quite good, I thought. Greg's story has a folkloric feel coupled with his own quirky humor, and Wirt's is silly with a fun twist ending. 4 stars.
The second issue*: Another "Schooltown Follies" story. We're still doing this? I guess it was a little funnier than the previous two, but it also went on too long and was generally pointless. 2 stars.
The third issue: Not as good as the first, but fine. 3 stars.
The fourth issue: Plot development! Wirt's story was better than Greg's, though the art kind of gets wonky near the end. Also, more Greg and interaction, please. 3.5 stars.
* Probably? I read the individual issues, but I understand that the collected editions may mix them up.
Still quite enjoying this series but as it goes further along, it's just really not what I was expecting at all. A couple issues here and there of shenanigans at Mrs Langtree's school, and a much lower stake story with far less mystery and unnerve. It's fun, but it's far from the substance of the show.
The original comic with 4 short stories was phenomenal, but this ongoing series is starting to get less and less interesting. The shapeshifter thing is... something, at least. That could get interesting towards the end. But now, we've dropped Anna's story - something which was really interesting at the start. And instead, we're chasing a "Hero Frog". What would've been a side-plot in one episode of the show is the full, ongoing story.
I enjoyed this volume much more than 1 & 2 because even though Greg is still stuck on his quest with the frog, we finally ARRIVE somewhere froggy rather than just passing through more silly meandering shenanigans in the forest. Wirt is still following his brother’s trail and his story is even more fun too because a companion joins him, adding more continuity between each chapter.
The last chapter is similar to the one at the end of volume two, featuring a vintage palette of limited colors, a squiggly squishy drawing style, and a story about the little schoolhouse with all the animals. The story centers on the kitty cat family and it’s really just cute, funny and precious. I loved it!
Fun but mostly filler.
This volume felt a little more like filler than the others. Greg finds the frog town but refuses to see what’s really happening. Meanwhile, Wirt and Sara are two steps behind Greg but way ahead of him on the case. It was okay. There was a second story in this vol as well, but it was about the animal school again. Didn’t love it, it was a little more grimy than the usual.
The hunt for hero frog drags on. Interesting choice to have different artists draw the Greg sections and the Wirt sections, and then intersperse the two stories. Where did the surprise come in, that seemed crowbarred in. Same with the Sara character (the girl Wirt likes from the show).
The Mrs Langtree section is extra bad this volume, the at is very messy and the story is nonsense (not in the good OTGW way we've come to know and love)
3.5. I really do not like the cutesy style of the final issue in this and the last volume. Neither the art nor the storytelling is consistent with the series as a whole. The Hunt for Hero Frog storyline continues in this volume, and that I did enjoy. Looking forward to the next one, but I do not like having to read the issues tacked on like an artistic afterthought.
The story in this volume felt very similar as too what has happened in the previous two volume which made it a bit boring to to read but I’m hoping the next volume will be better because of where the story ended in this volume.
Also disappointed they haven’t returned to Anna’s story as I’m finding the story’s about the school to not be that exciting
Over the Garden Wall is one of my favorite fall traditions. I love the art, the music, the humor… all of it. It’s nice to dive into the comics when I’m not ready to say goodbye to that magical little world quite yet.
This volume shows Wirt and Greg on two separate journeys - Greg to find the legendary ‘Hero Frog’ and Wirt to find his wayward brother. The comics following Greg were pure fun.
Greg continues to uncover the mystery surrounding the hero frog with Wirt behind on his own misadventure (bonus cute cat going to school story). This collection felt like it meanders around, which could work if the stories hit like the show but these 3 stories are all just ok. I enjoyed the giant mountain man and the oatmeal bars with the geese but overall it felt like a bit of a bore
