On the whole, I think I like the light novel version of this story better--even though it has Shun's point of view and the manga doesn't (heh, heh). In the afterword, Kakashi, the manga's author, calls their version of the story a 2D representation compared to the light novel's 3D, and that isn't inaccurate. It's basically a quick, breezy summary of the spider's portion of the story, emphasizing action rather than the mystery of the time skip, or in-depth descriptions of abilities. It's a decent way to re-experience So I'm a Spider in a fraction of the time it would take to read the book. I can easily see a reader who's completely new to the story wondering what happened to the rest of the literature class, since in the manga so far, there's not even a hint that any of them lived.
Okina Baba's short-short story contribution this time shows how even just being a witness to a battle between powerful monsters can be dangerous for the spider.
Oh, man- this ended on such a cliffhanger I bought and read the third volume immediately on comixology. Fortunately I had the self-discipline after that to order the rest of the series from my public library. It's such an interesting premise and that the creator is able to keep the reader in the dark to the same degree as the main character spider really helps the reader to experience what the spider is experiencing in real time. I love it when I'm so into a story, I'm trying to figure out how to get out of the current crisis right along with the protagonist. I'm looking forward to digging into the rest of the series! Should take an afternoon, I imagine :).
it's boring (for me at least), and it feels like i'm wasting my time reading something with such slow development in the actual grand scheme of the plot. i didn't really want to drop this, but i just cannot find it in me to continue this right now, idk.
This is the second volume of the manga adaptation. It depicts Kumoko's continuing struggle to survive in the Great Elroe Labyrinth. At the start of the volume, she has been chased into the Lower Stratum, which features more dangerous monsters than the Middle Stratum, where she started.
The first major event is intense. I don't think I've ever used the phrase "nail bitter" in my of my reviews before, but it is perfectly qualified to describe this event. Who would have thought that a spider hunting stray wasps over ten days could be so suspenseful? It also shows significant character development on Kumoko's part.
She has learned that web nests can be used for more than insulating herself from the world. They can be offensive weapons as well; attack and defense at the same time shows her growing tactical mind. Indeed, she is becoming quite clever in how she uses her webbing and how she construct her nests. At one point, she camouflages a nest by building it near the ceiling and sticking small rocks to its underside.
She also experiments with other skills she gains, such as poison creation, web control and cutting threads. The fantasies she has about these skills are fun to see. One of them is a magical girl spider, and another is trapping thousands of knights in a razor floss trap.
The final major event of the volume is both good and bad. It is exciting. It is well constructed among the panels to create a flowing sense of battle progression. It showcases all the skills and strategic ability that Kumoko has developed. However, one might question how an army of apes could exist in this one area, and why they are so determined to kill this one little spider. Kumoko herself wonders this, and the battle does not conclude in the volume, so the answer should presumably be answered in the next volume.
As with the previous volume, this one ends on a cliffhanger, and like the previous volume, this one is still slice-of-life, so the volume could end anywhere and it is might still be a cliffhanger ending. Kumoko's daily struggle to survive is different from an adventurer's mission, after all.
The artwork continues to be really good.
The dragon that appears at the start is truly fearsome. No wonder Kumoko thinks "No way. No way" when she sees it. Not only is far bigger and stronger than anything she has seen so far but it is also far beyond anything she could hope to engage in combat.
There is this enormous open cavern in the latter parts of the volume, and the reader truly gets a sense of how big it is and how small Kumoko feels in comparison to it. The battle that takes place here is dynamic, making use of its height and the stalagmites.
So I'm a Spider, So What? is still one of the more interesting isekai stories I've read so far, but with volume 2, it's beginning to stretch the limits of how engaging a story can be, while only having one real character. I get that Kumoko (the only name we've really gotten for our protagonist) still doesn't really know where she is, in the grand scheme of things, and the lack of other sentient beings is supposed to emphasize her isolation, but it would be nice to have some text besides her monologuing, and the video game text boxes of her appraisal skill.
I kind of thought she might've run into one of her other classmates by this point--presumably they're also out there, somewhere--and that she might've formed a makeshift adventuring party of cave monsters. I know Kumoko never was a people person, but maybe she could've started bonding with them over their shared circumstances. It would have at least allowed for some conversation, instead of just being her own inner thoughts all the time.
And I don't mean it to seem like this is a bad manga--I've read far worse, particularly in the isekai genre. But watching Kumoko develop her abilities, and use them to fend off much stronger monsters is beginning to lose its shine. I hope something happens in the next volume to shake up the status quo, the series is in danger of aimlessly spinning its wheels at this point.
The second volume is definitely an improvement on the much slower start of the series (What do you expect? She is just a spider and has to get experience.) After escaping certain doom our heroine (whom I shall refer to as Kumoko thanks to a bit in the book where she calls herself that) is falling to deeper levels and ultimately into even more perilous (unless you count the humans) dangers as she uses her wits and skills she learns to survive in a world where you eat or you get eaten. Just wait till you see the monsters waiting for Kumoko. :)
There are a lot of good parts in the book but probably one of my favorite parts of the book is when Kumoko discovers the Elroe Gastruch aka snail-bug and decides to find out why none of the other monsters are eating the little guys. Her reaction is dramatically great and her insistence to finish her food even though it was so bad her HPs actually dropped cinched it for me. :)

Kumoko finds her way into another section of the vast Elroe Labyrinth, so, of course, where there be dungeons, there be dragons!!! Chased from her home yet again, our spider girl encounters more (and less) powerful monsters. A wild death cry puts her at the mercy of an ever-burgeoning mass of primates. They prove particularly challenging as they are intelligent enough to learn from each of Kumoko’s tricks. Lots of world building in this volume, so it can feel slow at times, but it ramps up with the army of anogratch. Once again, Kumoko finds herself on a precipice. Brilliant art from Asahiro Kakashi keeps the intensity high and the action furious! Another good volume. It is tempting me to pick up the light novel again, but the writing in LNs can often be insufferable.
I inhaled the first two volumes of this, and I think it's pretty much adorable. The main character is still relatively undeveloped, but what I know of her has her firmly embedded in my heart. I also enjoy the riffing on other isekai works, most notably That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which I also love. I'm excited to get caught up on the manga this weekend and potentially move on to the light novels.
I know, I know, after reading the first one I said I wouldn't continue because I said it would be a better as an anime (which I did find out they had made one, just haven't gotten the chance to watch it yet.). BUT I think after reading a few different kinds of mangas and having very few left at my library to read I decided to give this one a go again. It was mich better this time around. I liked it and it was fun. Not 5 star rating but definitely a solid 4 star.
I received this second addition of So I'm a Spider, So What? for my birthday from my boyfriend, RIGHT after we finished the anime of this series that was available on Crunchyroll / Kissanime. To say that I already knew what was going to happen is an understatement.
Overall, still a cute little manga about a girl getting turned into a spider and having to figure out what to do now.
After watching the anime of this story last year I decided to check out the manga version. This is a Isekai - an "in another world" story - but with the difference that the protagonist finds themselves reborn as a lowly spider monster in a fantasy world and has to survive. An amusing fantasy story.
4/5 I enjoy the light novel more but this is still entertaining. Volume 2 takes us close to the end of Light Novel Vol. 1 and the monkey battle. Our spider is roaming the lower stratum trying to find her way out of the dungeon.
Our heroine playing on her phone in human form and swinging a morning spider in her spider form on the cover of volume 2.
The manga distills the story down so it's a smoother read, though you lose out on some detail, obviously. I recommend it because it's interesting, funny, and best of all, to me, no harem.
Welp, at least she's getting stronger and learning how to take care of herself in this environment. Still not completely sold on this but it's a nice reading filler for me until I can get back to my books. Recommended? sure buy/borrow? Borrow
The girl who was reincarnated as a spider continues to explore a dungeon.
This story is - walk, battle, level up, walk, battle, etc. I want something more than this bare bones of a story so I'm ready to quit reading this series.
