Vindication

Rate this book
Prison wasn't easy, but Ray Jansen did his time and managed to come out clean on the other side. Since then, he's had to claw his way back into the real world. It took nine years, but somehow he found a way to rebuild his company and make a new life for himself. He even managed to charm his way into a romance with a beautiful socialite who also just happens to be the current partner in his latest business venture.

Isabella Martin isn't necessarily who she seems, however. There's a mysterious past lying just under her pristine surface, a traumatic history from which she hasn’t fully recovered. One night with Ray will force long-forgotten memories to the present, setting off a series of catastrophic twists and turns that threaten to destroy their future.

Soon Ray finds himself on the wrong side of the law once again as he struggles to prove his innocence. Squaring off against the forces of corruption is normally an impossible task for most ex-cons in the system, but Ray isn't most ex-cons. He's gonna wage war with everything he's got in an attempt to clear his name.

This time, he'll be ready for them.

Things aren't always as they seem, and dark pasts can sometimes be hidden behind the sweetest faces. This was a thrilling story that will take the reader on a ride through the legal system. There are plenty of twists to keep you reading, and the three POVs used really flesh out the story. A book that will keep you reading late into the night.

I finished reading VINDICATION weeks ago and I’m still thinking about it. This book refuses to leave me alone. It seems it’s always there, like picture-in-picture in the back of my brain...

This is a remarkable debut effort from first-time author Chris Janish. The story is engaging; the characters are real. I suppose the courtroom is a natural setting for Mr. Janish, because as he mentions in the acknowledgements, he has quite a “colorful” past with the New York Department of Corrections.

I’ve previously read work by Mr. Janish’s co-author, Christina Hart, who has a gift for edgy and dark writing. Her influence shines through here, where even the side characters have been given multiple layers and a convincing voice.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story about an ex-con turned straight-and-narrow just to have the rug pulled out right from under him. Ray isn’t without flaws but it’s still easy enough to root for him. The guy went to prison, spent a decade rebuilding his life, and then--BOOM--he’s accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Between the crooked DA, the corrupt justice system, and a wealthy media mogul (whose daughter Ray just happens to be in love with), our protagonist is left trying to find his footing in a world that seems hell-bent on trying to bring him down at every turn.

The journey through the pages is not a straight line. There are twists and turns and even a few surprises as well. The writing is structurally sound; I didn’t notice any overt typos or gaping plot holes (a huge issue for me whenever I’m reading indie), and I can’t even imagine how much research was needed in order to deliver such authenticity during the courtroom scenes.

A solid, entertaining novel for readers of legal thrillers, crime fiction, and courtroom dramas. Five stars!
